[Q] Remove Google launcher integration in KitKat? Possible? - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am using LiquidSmooth ROM 2.37 on my d2tmo Galaxy 3. I would like to upgrade to KitKat, either CM11 or LIquidSmooth 3 but I have been reading about how the Google launcher is integrated with Google Now and in the home screen. I prefer to use as few google products as possible (I know, I know, android is a google product etc). My question is, if I install a different launcher like Nova or something, can I strip out the Google stuff or is it always there underneath everything?
Any ideas or advice appreciated.

[Q] Google Now Launcher not working for anyone else?

Hey guys,
I try using the Google Now Launcher and it keeps telling me I need a newer version of Google Search, of which I have the latest version installed.
This is happening on both my phone (Nexus 4) and tablet (Galaxy Tab 2 7"), and both are on 4.4.4
Is this happening to anyone else?
Thanks

Can I get samsung apps store on my NOTE i717 running kitkat?

I have been playing around with my note in the past while, and I found a rom that I like and is fairly stable. Its daydream 4.4.4... I am wondering about installing samsungs apps store. Can I get it and where do I find it? I signed in with my Samsung account and I cannot seem to find the download to install it. I tried another route and the apps store just opens and gives me the build number and does nothing else.
Any help would be appreciated!
thanks

There is no stock ROM available for the note above Jellybean. Therefore no Samsung apps on KitKat. If it's just regular apps you need, use Google Play store included in any gapps package. If you really need Samsung apps use a stock based ROM. (Custom Canadian, Blackstar, Padawan, Only one, etc)

good reason. ha ha! thanks again. I guess I will have to google some alternatives for the apps I have been using before.

Google Phone & Contacts

Some of you have probably seen the recent and then quick take down of the Google Phone and Contacts app. It appears these apps would only install on Nexus and Google Play edition phones with 6.0.
Has anyone gotten them to install on the S6/Edge. I did some research and it looks like there where ways to get them to install on phones with 4.4 (older version) and then on the G3/4 with 5.0 (these methods did not work on the S6) I would really like to use the Phone app with the google powered caller ID I dont care as much for the contacts app.

Nexus 7 - Play My Library Widget missing in LineageOS?

Hi.
Apologies for the post out of the blue.
I salvaged an old Nexus 7 (2012) Grouper, with the aim of using it as a book reader for my wife, and after playing with it for a while in the stock ROM it was noticeably slow. After reading a bit about it, I ended up installing the latest unnoficial version of LineageOS 11.0 from here, hoping to speed it up.
I also installed the OpenGApps pico package, and then manually installed Google Play Books to access my library.
However, while everything seems to be working as smooth as butter so far, I struggle to find the "Play - My Library" widget on the widget selection screen. It used to be available on the stock 5.1 rom, and I believe it belongs to the Play Store application. In fact, in my other Nexus 7 Grouper on stock ROM that has that widget, it claims to be on
Play Store v7.8.16.P-all [0] [PR] 155590935
While the one I just flashed from OpenGApps seems to be even more recent:
v.7.9.30.Q-all [0] [PR] 157075589
I tried to install another version of the Play Store from apkmirror.com but it fails to install. I also can't remove the Play Store application, for some reason, so I'm kind of at a dead end.
I'd love to be able to use the "Play - My Library" widget to cover the whole screen, but I can't seem to make that happen. The "Play Books" widgets are just too small to be useful (1 book or 4 books).
Would anyone have any ideas on how to make this work? Does anyone have a similar configuration and have a different experience? I was trying to see if the P-all vs Q-all would make any difference, but I'm at a loss. Any pointers, help or guidance would be very much appreciated.
Thanks in advance for your time.
EDIT: Also, just checked, both devices have the same version of Google Play Services - 11.0.55 (230-156917137) and Play Books (3.13.17).

what package of OpenGApps did you flash?
also, did you try looking for a newer LineageOS? like LOS 12.1, 13, OR 14?
maybe that widget doesn't work on KitKat, I'm not sure..

Hi MigoMujahid, thanks for the prompt reply!
I tried the Pico ARM OpenGApps package. I may test the full one later and see how it goes.
I suppose trying a newer LineageOS version is a good recommendation, at least to try it out. The reason I was avoiding those is because the last "effective" well-performing OS on this old tabled is 4.4. And you may be right, it might be that the widget doesn't work on KitKat.
I'll try a new package, per your suggestion, and may test out a newer LineageOS package, hoping it won't affect the performance significantly.
I'll report back in case I succeed - or fail miserably
Have a good weekend, thank you!
Same here. OpenGApps 2017-06-02. PlayStore 7.9.30.Q - no widgets :-/
Edit: I installed now 7.8.74.P (from apkmirror) and the widget is back again.

Yes, I'm finding a similar behavior.
If I install from apkmirror the widget does return, though then Play Services keeps crashing on me.
What has worked for me so far is to start from an older Pico GApps release:
https://github.com/opengapps/arm/releases?after=20160423
It will then upgrade to the latest versions, and it seems to have the widgets.
I'm now just struggling to install Google Play Music, as I keep getting error -24, so I'm trying to configure the GApps installation.
But yes, progress.
So, I solved this by using the Aroma package, from the older date I just shared, and installing Play Music from there.
All is good now.
Sorry for the trouble, and I hope this helps others.

Yes of course...this is the hardcore solution
Just replacing Phonesky.apk in /system/priv-app is much quicker and easier

Google Go

I want to install Google Go app instead of Google because it uses very much RAM (my device is a Samsung Galaxy J1 2015 SM-j100h Android 4.4.4 Samsung Experience with only 512 MB RAM. Who had the very good idea to install Samsung Experience on 512 MB?).
When I disable Google App (not go, the normal app) I can't use the Googe Voice Typing (I don't see the microphone on Play Store and Chrome searchbar and there is an error when I use Google Go's Voice Search).
Can I install Google Voice Typing don't installing Google App?
If not, can I don't open in background classic Google App?

Im using this same device and its better to quit the google all together Google Go apps are useless you need to install Google app for all functionalities which slow downs the phone so instead of all that trouble its better to say bye to google here is what i have done.
I installed a custom rom Resurrection Remix (Android 7.1) which is ported by Erwin Abs installed it without GoogleApps aka gapps instead i have installed microG which is basically a replacement of Google Play Services and it eats minimum ram and thus device performance is smooth of course until you install tons of apps on it so install only apps that you really need and avoid those that are less useful and more ram consuming and by doing so you can have a good looking android with this amazing custom rom which is better than anyone i ever used plus your phone will not lag or hang alot.
