Q: why are there faux and faux free versions?
A: i love a lean kernel. with that said if you never plan on messing with gamma, or
purchasing FauxSound control app then i suggest you use the versions that dont have those features.
makes no sense to use a kernel with lots of bells and whistles youll never use.
Q: whats frontswap?
A: Frontswap -- and cleancache -- with a fairly small impact on the kernel,
provides a huge amount of flexibility for more dynamic, flexible RAM
utilization in various system configurations
When a workload starts swapping, performance falls through the floor.
Frontswap significantly increases performance in many such workloads by
providing a clean, dynamic interface to read and write swap pages to
"transcendent memory" that is otherwise not directly addressable to the kernel.
This interface is ideal when data is transformed to a different form
and size (such as with compression) or secretly moved (as might be
useful for write-balancing for some RAM-like devices). Swap pages (and
evicted page-cache pages) are a great use for this kind of slower-than-RAM-
but-much-faster-than-disk "pseudo-RAM device" and the frontswap (and
cleancache) interface to transcendent memory provides a nice way to read
and write -- and indirectly "name" -- the pages.
Q: I heard if you disable swap, then performance increases.
A: Bottom line is that, without swap:
1. Your system will be less stable.
2. Your system will not be able to hibernate as well.
3. Disk access speed in your system will be slower compared to a system that has swap partition.
Moreover, disk access speed will drop in the course of time.
Q: ive been messing with my frequency settings, and they wont stick. what gives?
A: the installer hardcodes min/max frequencies. if youd like to try something different
run the installer again, and pick new min/max frequencies there.
Q: I'm trying to use gamma control, but the settings dont seem to stick once my screen shuts on/off.
A: im aware of this. if you use the FauxControl app from the playstore your setting will stick better
however youll still have to cycle your screen on/off to reapply the values. im looking into this and hopefully
will figure this issue out soon.
Q: DriveDroid?
A: this is an app that allows you to use your phone as a bootdisk for your PC.
Q: My phones really hot, what the heck did you do!?
A: put your phone down. heavy use of your phone will make it hot. no amount of
kernel magic will keep your phone cool while under heavy use.
Q: just to spite you ive been flashing GPE kernels on sense roms, and they WORK!!!!
A: yes they boot, but any issues you have while expiermenting will make it more difficult
to seperate user error from kernel error. please just use GPE for GPE based roms and SENSE for
SENSE based roms.
Q: if i see you on the street, can i shake your hand?
A: NO
Q: can we have more governors?
A: no, kernels dont like redundancy. having four governors based on the on-demand governor just
isnt good practice.

Thanks mate!! Can I use this in Insertcoin?
EDIT : Also anyway to implement kexec-hardboot?
EDIT 2 : Sorry for the questions, just figure I'd ask now before the thread gets flooded with this question.. but since we have m8 kernel source is there any way to get motion gestures, again, sorry for the questions.

Sorry for the stupid question :
The difference between GPE kernel and Sense kernel? Because I have flashing a GPE kernel with Sense rom (Insertcoin v2.3.0)and it also works well.

Kexec-hardboot is kind of pointless right now until I figure out why it won't boot sense as the primary rom, but I believe it's already enabled, it was in .torrented's versions at least. Btw if you think you might have any ideas on how to fix that, help is welcome. Pretty sure it has something to do with how partitions are mounted. If you look through the multirom thread you can see my unsuccessful attempts to fix it.
@iHateWebOS good to see your own thread for this

Gpe kernel will boot on sense, but you may have touch issues ect. To be on the safe side, and to avoid false bug reports Im posting the two versions.

I'm using Google Now Launcher on a Sense 6 ROM and everything is good. Is there a recommendation of Sense over GPE as Sense is my base or should I be using GPE?

Sense base = sense kernel. Gpe base = Gpe kernel.

Interesting, thank you for the response. Just to be clear you are using his build version R4.4 (not the newest that was rebased)? I ended up with a frozen boot then the display split into colored lines before going black. I am well versed in compiling roms but was not sure if base is a factor for kernels.
Thanks

Using 5.2 now but I've been using his sense 6 rom sense release. It's what I've used for everything I've released so far. As long as its sense android version is 4.4.2 you should be good to go

OK must be a bad flash...I will re download and try again. I can't remember ever having a bad download. I was unsure if your newest posts was only designed to work with his current base.
Thanks
Update:
Re downloaded and checked md5...good download same results. Screen gets stuck at boot then multi-color lines before going to a grey blank screen. I have all the latest firmware and radios, not sure why the Faux enabled Sense kernel will not work for me.

@iHateWebOS - is FFC enabled in these builds, like the ones you've given me in the beastmode thread? If I follow this thread and flash updates, is it the same kernel as those builds? Thanks!
They should be fine for Venom 3.5.0 right?

Kernel Samepage Merging. In layman's terms it combines duplicate chunks of memory freeing up space for even more stuff to be loaded in RAM. To try it out, open a terminal and run:
Code:
echo 1 > /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/run
After some time the kernel will check memory pages that have been marked as merge-able and do it's thing. See /sys/kernel/mm/ksm/pages_* files for stats.

I do not see any voltage control on h0tw1r3 10.1 ROM. Do we (or can we) flash this OC kernel over h0tw1r3 10.1 ROM and does the r1a have built-in undervolting or do we have to use external app?

Voltage control is not (currently) in CM9. I will be "working on it soon"(tm), in the meantime try one of these 3rd party apps: Antutu CPU Master, SetCPU

BLN works on stock, you'll need a modified liblights.so located here http://www.multiupload.nl/OLYNDF7TLK push to /systsm/lib/hw/
set correct permissions and reboot and bln should be working.

This necessary for stock, and possibly some AOSP roms. I will be including a fixed liblights in the next update.
To take advantage of BLN, you'll need to install an app (unless you're on my CM9, it's built-in - Settings->Advanced->Sensors).

My overclock settings don't stick after the screen goes off. Using set cpu. I'm assuming because the rom (Flappjaxxx UCLF6) has it own setting for cpu so when the phone goes to sleep it gets over ridden. Not sure I can turn those off in the rom.

Sounds like FJ_mod is not reading the settings directly from the kernel, but instead always using values internal to FJ_mod which end up blowing away your settings on wakeup . I'm sure he will update FJ_mod soon to fix the issue.
h3r3tic said:
OK so i think I figured it out. For those on fjs roms. You have to disable andrev oc so it disables the CPU profiles set in fj-tools. I did this by using rom toolbox. Go into root explorer and browse to system/xbin and find the andrev oc file and rename it to andrev oc.bak then set a CPU profile with which ever app you are using and reboot. I'm using system tuner to both overclock and undervolt. This is working for me so far. You can check by going into settings ans clicking on CPU tweak. If it force closes then its disabled. I was checking logcats and it is no longer changing the CPU back to default settings on screen lock. Flap feel free to chime in if this is gonna break something else. Other wise no issues yet.

This is a kernel update only. You will need a 3rd party app to manage the settings and make sure it has the option to "apply settings on reboot".

Well, you may be right, but I just hate if I report something is wrong and than see it was my mistake and I false alarm it. It usually don't happen to me.
Btw yank, before sleep time, what you think about the readahead buffers some lower by default? I had some handups when multitasking hard and using 3Mb, on 512Kb still no related issue for now Even the "benefits" are hard to detect (even they are there I swear!) the "hickups" are easily detected
You could try yourself by switching to maybe even higher lvl's if you hadn't done it already. What you think on putting them a little bit down for the common user who has no clue on how this works?
PS: Multitasking meaning using internet or whatsapp while downloading some huge item like a film, where you have the SD card burning

Can do. I used to have them at 2Mb, upped them to 3Mb on the Sammy. Might be a bit too much ... if you do sequential reads it should help, but if it's random access it sure will generate unnecessary overhead.

Nt yet, initially I tested 256 and all went good, now up to 512 for some days, may go up to 1Mb if u wish
Any ideas on how to test the "good" situation to use it (for benefits) and the "bad" (for the "hickups")? You know way better than me how this works P And even if it's nearly unnoticeable all learnt is welcome

Well using a big readahead buffer on random reads (reading randomly accross inside of a file) should be bad, as you will have the system read let's say 4Mb ahead of what you asked for...
On the other hand reading a full file, e.g. copying it or watching a video ... should be better with a big buffer.
So the trick is to find the right balance...

Looking great man!
I'm reaaaaaally tempted to try this but i'll miss two features from perseus...

both should be kinda easy to import to this kernel i think...

Frequencies set by Aroma installer are hardcoded, and can not be changed unless you re-flash the kernel.
To use the MotionLaunchGestures you must install xposed framework. use sense six toolbox or other gesture module to set the desired gestures. Make sure to soft reboot the phone once you're done.
When setting up your wake gestures please note that logo=home button. Since we don't have the logo area, gestures uses the home button instead. I have mine set to long press home for flashlight.
Stock+ version is a lighter cleaner version of the kernel for non-power users that won't Overclock or undervolt the CPU.

I've tried the stock ROM [Santod] posted with it's included kernel, and I've tried all 3 posted versions of NuKernel on the stock ROM, NuSense, and UnSense with the same results, all clean flashes. Any other kernel + ROM works perfectly fine (Sense or AOSP).
Something's definitely screwed up in the kernel, but since you've kept it stock that means it's probably a bug directly from HTC? I really don't want to go all the way back to S-On/locked to be completely sure though. Any ideas, or anyone else experiencing this?

Been waiting for this update for months, and it's broken to the point of unusable Going to try HTC support now, but thought I'd mention it.
Just strange that it doesn't affect me at all. Bad to the point of being unusable? Works fine for me.....

Thanks for the Kernel! I just installed on Stock 4.4.2 after wipe dalvik.
Zero issues here work fine.:good: question how to enable DoubleTap2Wake.
I installed trickster Mod but I cant find it.

@iHateWebOS if you are the beast mode s2w files you should be able to use my aroma installer build tools from my git unless you already are
Naw it was the wrong upload, link in OP now points to correct download. I'm using anykernel right now, but I'm about to switch to your build tools for my next update.
I'll put link here to for the lazy ones.

Due to my upload mistake i learned something about your issue. The kernel you flashed was a test kernel that contained only two changes. Over clock and voltage control. Neither of those changes would affect touch sensitivity, so in essence you flashed the stock kernel as it was released by HTC. I even used the same toolchain they used to compile. Your Problems are either a stock behavior, or hardware failure.

I tried flashing this twice on unsense six and I got bootloops both times on the white HTC quietly brilliant screen. It didn't even make it to the boot animation. Before that I was ruining the new nukernel. Both times I was using fresh downloads of dna-ihate-428, both md5 checked. I would love to help but can I even pull a last kmesg when it bootloops that early?

That's strange I just downloaded from the link in the OP and flashed this to santod sense six ROM and didn't bootloop
Edit: maybe your phone doesn't like the OC I'll make a revision so it boots at 1512 instead if 1728. Most phones should have no problems with a small OC like this. Maybe your slow binned?

I'll pick that in the am tomorrow, I seen those a while back, but it's kind of a dirty hack and wasn't really needed sense sensitivity was fine on ported kernel. Still really strange that my sensitivity seems un changed by the new source. I'm trying to dig to find what changes HTC could have made to cause this and I'm coming up with nothing.

Yeah, I agree it's definitely a hack. I don't know what's different either... Synsptics_3200.c seems largely unchanged.

Could something in the kernel cause the hardware for the proximity/light sensor to fail? I know my sensor is broken but I'm just wondering if it was when I changed my screen or if something in the kernel itself broke something hardware related in my phone cause it's almost like it's reversed or something now. I am awaiting a new flex cable so hopefully that should fix it I'm just curious if that's possible

[Kernel] Lunar Max Kernel [Sense][Android 4.4.2]

LUNAR MAX KERNEL
Welcome to Lunar Max Kernel! This kernel is for Sense ROM's and built using the android 4.4.2 source code (VZW). This should work on all carriers. As I do not have the device, I am building these and having them tested before release. If there are problems, please let me know and I shall do my best to fix..although tough without the device for myself.
Instructions: Flash in recovery. These kernels are in anykernel format (i.e. - not a boot image), they unpack your current boot.img and repack the ramdisk with the kernel. The insecure boot.img has been removed due to too much confusion; if you find yourself needing one...give me a shout.
Enjoy!

Was not aware of the source release for sense6. The Wi-Fi issue however will be fixed shortly. Flyhalf has checked in and says it works on vzw, so I will use his work around to enable it on all carriers.
I will patch in the source when I get some time.

Updated OP with NEW version of today's kernel. My testers are not able to verify this one, but this (if everything works) should enable wifi for all carriers.:fingers-crossed: It's the same version - no added features, just the attempt to fix wifi for all. Let me know how it goes and thanks for being patient.

Seriously have no idea what I may be doing wrong. Running ViperMax 2.0.0 android version 4.4.2 with standard insecure boot image. Any insight? Flashed insecure boot, booted into android, rebooted to recovery, flashed newest Lunar, booted to android and begins to loop.

I'm on Scotty cleanrom 2.0 so flashed your insecure boot with units support and lost all my paid apps. Luckily I made a backup right before. I'm already this far so will install your kernel to test out what I can but will need to go back if I can't get the paid part worked out.
It may have caused me a little inconvenience but I do thank you for this and hope it all works out going forward.

Wifi is working on the new one. My paid apps returned from the insecure flash to the newest one. However I do have some pretty intense lag in most apps, adw launcher swiping, and even keyboard that wasnt there in the latest flykernel or insecure boot. Its like half second at the very first touch then it catches up with what Im doing.
GOOD!
EDIT
Just flashed the untested Lunar Kernel download. I'm on Verizon running viper2.0 sense 5.5. I can confirm WiFi is working.
I'm getting ready to flash the 1st download link the untested version I'll report

The elite kernel team pre-configures their kernel
cool feature of it tho is you can enable grey-scale mode in kernel auditor and it makes your battery life insane (because your screen is only black and white) kinda like the Samsung super battery saver on the galaxy series i just set a tasker profile that changes kernel auditor and some system settings

I've had this happen on several different ROMs lately. Normally, it will get detected after a few minutes.
Otherwise, popping the SIM out and putting it back in has solved it for me.
