I'm not quite sure but I have never been able to get this tablet rooted. To be clear, this is the HC version (IT2 I guess), running 2.4.81
For starters I would just like to do it the easy way and get SDE on there, the way it's described here and on the Archos site. But every time I've copied the file over it just gives me "update failed (1)". I've now tried every conceivable combination of cable pulling, unmounting, waiting, different files,... the outcome is exactly the same.
I didn't see this problem mentioned anywhere so I was wondering if anyone experienced this or could point me to the most painfree way of finally rooting this tablet?
Thx in advance.

I've had my NT for about a week and was able to sideload just about everything I wanted without doing a root. Then the dreaded 1.4.1 upgrade struck and I was unable to do anything more. I was able to revert back to 1.4.0, and do a factory reset to get everything working again. Then decided to take the plunge and use Indirect's root process. (yes, it was a big decision because I said I would avoid it if possible).
The problem is, I can't past the first step. I've enabled USB debugging and downloaded the files I need, but the NT will not show up in the device manager with the "!" symbol. I've read through all the threads and tried a number of different things, but the NookandZergy program will not identify the NT.
I think I'm stuck, if I stay where I am I will get hit with the OTA upgrade again, but I can't seem to work through the process to change it.
Any ideas?
Hello @Barry4405 read this: [FAQ] NT Tips & Tricks, How to's | NEWBIE? Having issues? - Please READ! the DRIVERS ISSUES section.
Veronica
Or, rather I should say, "What am I missing ??"
What you are experiencing is a drivers issue use the link i posted below, there you will find a link to a step by step guide to setup drivers and fix this problem.
Veronica
SUCCESS !!!
This forum is AMAZING. I double checked the link you suggested and found what I had missed. It took me about four attempts but I finally was able to get the driver to work, and everything worked great after that.
Thank you so much!
OK, thanks to my own ineptitude I am back to square one.
After installing the root I somehow messed up the launcher, couldn't get to ADW and had no web access. I figured the quickest fix would be to start over again. I did an install of 1.4.0 and wiped everything clean. I followed the instructions that I used before to get the ADB drivers working, and they will not work. Everytime I connect the NT it shows up as drives E and F and windows insists on installing the drivers, even though I have disabled the auto installation.
I've used USBDeview utility and checked and double checked the USB debugging, it still insists on installing drivers for it.
What am I missing???
OK, I think I solved it. Shortly after I sent the last message it occured to me, "I don't need to look for and install the drivers I need, they're already there from the last time." Sure enough, I connected the NT and ran Zerg and..Bazinga. I have a rooted NT again.
Hello,
A few months ago, i rooted our Archos 101 succesfully. Multiboot. Worked nice.
Then the firmware came, and my partner let it install. But it failed halfway.
He tried some things, but no succes.
Now we found this guide on how to install the firmware.
http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=76&t=54637
This guide seems to be the windows version from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1196318
My partner tried the steps, but nothing seems to work.
We have only the recovery menu, without the SDE .....
I tried to use the stock firmware and the sde version. But it stops directly, saying: update failed
I tried the format option, the fw-update version.
I tried downing with firefox and iE8. We use the original file-name
Nothing helps
I hope we are not bricked.
What can we do?
Thanks in advance,
Lydia

Hi,
What's your tab? it will help us i think.
and, have you all stock menu (except sde menu of course)?
I have no idea, except, your hardware is damaged.
another question comes to me: The full format works well?
Bizcuite
If u can uninstall SDE do it (if you dont have SDE menu skip this step). Try full device reformat. Make sure you download the right firmware for your device cuz many people made the mistake to download the wrong one.
We have an Archos 101 internet 8gb gen8
We used this stock firmware:
update.archos.com/8/gen8/gen8_2.4.83/firmware_archos_android_gen8.aos
and this sde firmware:
archos.com/support/download/firm_dev/firmware_archos_android_gen8.aos
(sorry outside links are not allowed for me yet)
We tried several formats. The guide let to format from within windows. Recently I cleaned my computer. So no ADB of Android sdk intstalled at the moment. The format from the windows-admin is a bit strange, but I hoped the guide was ok.
We tried FAT and FAT32
It seem to work.
We have only the white screen with the boot menu. No SDE.
The firmware worked in the beginning but got stuck and hanged voor about half an hour. Then we interupted it by switching off the tablet
Now it won't start any script.
I do hope it is nothing with the hardware! Could it really go wrong when roootin?
Greetz, Lydia
I have searched around but cannot find any forum posts relating to this tablet.
I just picked up a Viewsonic Viewpad e100 tablet and would like to root this thing.
It is running ICS 4.0.3 and i believe its a bit branded/customized from viewsonic.
I am still a bit new to rooting and i have tried a few tools out there but nothing seems to work.
I have tried superoneclick and it appears to randomly say its rooted but fails on copying stuff.
It will say its rooted but it isnt. then i run it again and it says it isnt rooted and attempts it. it just seems like its random.
Ran through a few scripts I found on other forums relationg to the viewpad 10e and 7 but it seems like the folder structure may be a bit different.
But, my experience in linux is minimal so ya...there it is.
Can one of you awesome gurus here help me out at all?
Hi, give this a try. It's meant to be able to root almost all 4.0 devices
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1886460
Well, I have tried it and it said it was successful but its not. I try to run root app delete and it says it has no root access. I think it may be due to the system/xbin not being writable. SOClick tries to mkdir in there but fails. any ideas?
I have reset to factory defaults several times and tried again but no luck.
ehhh. appreciate your help.
Hi all I've updated my G9 80 many times and tried all the available ROM's with a few hiccups but have always managed to recover the tab with the info on this forum. On my latest update the tablet appears to refuse to load a ROM from the SDE menu? If I boot the tab normally it halts at the ARCHOS boot screen but I can see the tab in device manager/Disc drives as ARCHOS_A80S but not in the explorer window and the USB is shown as an unknown device. If I boot up into the SDE/Archos A80S Recovery menu and then select (Update Firmware) it opens up a drive on my win7 system labeled A80S_REC as per normal and I can transfer the (fimware_archos_it4.aos) update file across to the tab but when I select (OK to disconnect) the tab starts the update in progress which fails after about 20 seconds with a Update failed (221) message. This is the method that has always solved any problems in my previous operating excursions but after a few days of trying to solve this problem I'm now at an impasse has anybody any ideas or is it time to upgrade to the Gen 10 and retire this tab as bricked
Thanks for any info
Ken.
I made the basic mistake of trying to update with an older ROM (kicks own backside for making such a basic mistake) aaaaa well back to trying to brick it again but I happy as the screen of my old backup Hannspad is doing my eys in
The 221 error usually means that you have tried to install an older official Archos firmware than the last official Archos firmware you had installed.
If you know exactly which one that was, then you can find a link to download it hidden in-between all of the other rooted and custom ROMs in this list.
Go into Recovery / SDE and do a full Reformat. Do not try to install anything, just go thru the steps (without connecting to your computer) and let it fail the firmware upgrade process. Then exit out so your tablet turns off. Then start back up in Recovery / SDE and do another full Reformat. Then connect to your computer and copy over the Archos .aos file.
If it still shows a 221 error after that, then you may have at some point installed a higher official Archos firmware. Start all over with the above steps, but with the next higher Archos firmware download.
I really do not know just what might happen if say you had the official Archos 4.0.7 firmware installed and then installed a 'rooted' 4.0.25 or 4.0.26 firmware. That could possibly somehow make the tablet only allow you to install that specific official Archos firmware afterwards also.
Let us know what luck you have?
Now OK
Hi I came to the same conclusion myself and solved the problem 5 min after starting the thread but thanks for the info, it's much appreciated. I cannot understand how I missed this for so long as I've loaded the majority of the roms on this site. I solved it by downloading the latest rooted Firmware 4.0.26 from surdu_petru (GENIUS ROM MAKER )
Thanks again
Ken.

I'm looking for help with my Archos 5 Internet Tablet 500GB, it's gen7 and I can't find anything here about it. It's like everyone just forgot they ever were made. I can find everything there is about gens 8, 9, and 10, but there isn't even much about it on the Archos website. I realize it's been abandoned, but I still want to use the storage it has. I've seen people on YouTube with Froyo and Gingerbread versions of Android flashed to it, so why can't I find anything here? I've rooted it, and I'm stuck at the Recovery now because many of the sites I've been to say to format it and let it install the root os files that recover the actual boot operations. There's no way to boot into any other mode to engage USB debugging at this point. Please help.

Follow this guide http://dev.openaos.org/wiki/SettingUpMultiRootGen7 . However gingerbread won't run really well on harddisk devices, but you can always try and see if it is good enough for you. By following the guide, you will still be able to boot into the original firmware as well as gingerbread.
