I'm loving my Vibrant on AT&T. My only problem is that voicemail doesn't work. It hasn't worked since early September when I got the phone. I've been too busy with school to deal with the issue. Also, most people just leave a text or wait until I call them back later. But I definitely need voicemail for work.
I followed step 3 here and got the confirmation, but it still doesn't work. Step 2 doesn't apply because I don't see that option, even in the stock web browser on GV's mobile site. I downloaded the official app and opened it too (read somewhere that it needs to be opened at least once).
I think the problem originates in VM under Settings (system settings). I can change the preferred voicemail to GV, but I can't change the number underneath it; it's grayed out and I can't select the phonebook icon next to it either. Does anyone know how to fix this? Anyone on AT&T and got it working on their Vibrant?
I'm using Nero v1 with the stock kernel if it matters.
Most importantly, this is NOT a thread for you to berate me and the other AT&T users about why we should have gotten a Captivate instead. Make your own thread for that, because I really need some advice on this matter. There are a LOT of reasons why I got the Vibrant instead, not the least of which are: still has 1900 HSDPA, better accessories since it's basically the I9000, can use $10 data plan and AT&T can't do anything about it, and it's cheaper unlocked. Oh, and the better community
Yes, I did when I had my Aria, and it worked as it was supposed to back then.
Dunno if they changed anything, but Google Voice didn't have any issues back then...
When setting up GV on my Vibrant on T-Mobile, the voicemail number is greyed out and it doesn't allow to change. I just backed into GV app, it wouldn't go past that part of the setup, but my voicemail is GV now. hope this helps.

Well, could you check your settings and verify that you're situation differs from mine?
Might have something to do with the SIM card too. I think AT&T sets a VM number on the SIM card and I need to get a phone that can change that number on the SIM card.
EDIT: lol, everyone in this thread has so much Vibrant hate in their sigs. I like my Vibrant (more functionality than my old BlackBerry, although not nearly as stable/streamlined). Wish GPS worked like it should and the default file system format were more efficient. And that Samsung weren't so damned neglectful of the customer. That's pretty much it.
Did you activate GV voicemail under setting in the browser...if yes then it should say.."DEACTIVATE GOOGLE VOICEMAIL ON THIS PHONE"...does it say that in ur google voice setting...Under "PHONES TAB"??? if yes then ur google voice is setup for that phone...

...and now I feel dumb.
It actually was activated, but I think the problem was that I hadn't included the country code and gave a 10-digit number rather than 11-digits.
I deactivated it and followed the on-screen instructions (call '##004#' on the phone to erase the settings) and instead of just '*004*xxx-xxx-xxxx#', used the exact number they provided, which included the country code (i.e. '1-xxx-xxx-xxxx').
Thanks! Hope this helps anyone how searches for this problem.

I've been working at getting the voicemail for my first Android device, the SGH-i777, switched to GVoice for a bit now and I can't seem to get it working.
During the setup process [account selection, etc.] it goes to setup the voicemail and I get this error that reads:
"Error
Forwarding number changed failed"
So I found another route via the web interface with the string of numbers that reads: *004*googlenumber#.
Upon entering that in the dialer, I get:
"Call forwarding
Connection problem or invalid
MMI code
conditionally for All Basic Services"
Then I found a lead, on disabling all the settings under "Settings -> Call -> Call forwarding -> Voice Call". That gives me two errors:
"Unable to deactivate call diverting for unanswered calls. Unsupported by operator"
&
"Unexpected response from network."
Online, the web interface does show:
"Deactivate Google voicemail on this phone"
This is occurs when the device is stock and rooted, and running a new ROM. I've also tried deleting and re-adding my phone's number to my list of phones and reinstalling the GVoice app. [NOTE: It's stock and rooted right now though]
Ideas?
Check if the call can go into the voicemail message system first. If not, I will call ATT to reset the condition forwarding.
I do have a real AT&T voicemail setup and I can call it and leave a message [from another phone of course].
As for the condition forwarding, where should I take that? Tech Support via customer care? I did have to get on with tech support after they didn't switch my voicemail over from the iPhone's to a "standard" voicemail service.

Squid,
I am trying to help you here but I may have misunderstood some things that you said. Anyways, I had gVoice forwarding my voice mail just fine - actually, against my will because I wanted to stay with ATT voice and only use gVoice for text messages. Thus, if you go into settings>call>call forwarding - what does it say there? List your google number or does it list your ATT voice number? In my case it listed my google voice phone number and not my carrier number. I changed that back to my carrier, but maybe you go the opposite route. Sorry if I missed your point.

When I go "Settings -> Call -> Call Forwarding" there's another option in there with "Voice Call". There's then 4 lines, "Always Forward", "Forward When Busy", "Forward When Unanswered", "Forward When Unreachable". All of those [EXCEPT "Always Forward"] have text that reads "Forwarding to [presumably the AT&T voicemail number]".
I couldn't disable it manually, but I see where your going with it. Sadly, I cannot change any of the settings in there. Refer to the OP when I mention the lead on "disabling" the settings.

ok. Have you tried to uninstall gvoice, reboot, and re-install? Probably did, just saying.

Yes I have. I've tried a bunch of things.
But amazingly, I get to close this thread now! I called up AT&T and asked about conditional call forwarding and the guy walked me through a bunch of stuff. What ended up being the issue was the number set for the 'conditionals' in call forwarding and the "carrier number" for the voicemail [just below the radio button to select Google Voice] were different by one digit. Changing the carrier number to match the conditionals let the whole operation happen smoothly.
So, thanks to the two of you who responded!

Glad it works for you! Just for my information, the "conditional" is in which menu - call forwarding? I can't find a "conditional" option. I am sure this will come up again sometimes, so I try to fully grasp it. Thanks man!
I don't understand. I've had this same problem since I got my new phone, the SGH-i727 Skyrocket. My number in the carrier setting exactly matches the number for the "conditionals"... So what gives? I'm rooted and running a custom ROM, but the issue was present before I ever rooted, when I was stock.
I had some issues setting mine up, I am also rooted. Have you tried looking at voice.google.com -> Settings -> Phones -> Mobile and seeing if its checked or even there?
Also I reinstalled all the google apps so that might have also helped.
I had a similar problem. I'm guessing you have the Google voice app installed? I would try to reset to defaults the dialer info.
Try this
1. Remove Google app.
2. Clear dialer and dialer storage cache
3. When you go to dialer, the settings should be reset. Configure it as if you have no Google voice.
4. Install Google voice, but make sure you have both WiFi internet and cell phone reception.
5. Hopefully it succeeded, regardless go to the dialer --> Preference --> voice-mail handler for me its either Google voice, or voice mail, or none(dial voice number)
Like wise if you have the number is correct on the Google voice website and you have configured the phone with the app try entering this code. Remember the number is your Google voice mail.
Remove the dashes, and the X's correspond to the Google number, these are to be entered on the standard dialer. I do recommend this be your last step

not trying to revive a dead thread, but I was going at this all night and nothing worked, (new gs3 ATT)
have used gv for everything for a long time now and nothing has worked with this phone.
Went through and tried all the stuff above, and finally I tried putting in the mmi code in the dialer as *004*(area code and number)# and it went like normal, like a regular nexus phone.
This is without the "1" before the are code.
It went through fine and changed all the forwarding numbers in the forwarding menu, and set GV as voicemail.
The reason is that inside the phone- settings- voicemail-setup, you get what looks like a GB screen with your google voice number without the +1 infront of it, and no way to change it I don't think.
this is what the guy above was taking about I think with the att person on the phone. I hope this helps someone, I could have used it yesterday

Not sure if you're trying to be a smartass or not, but....either way this is the i777 forum. Post in the forum relative to your device.
why are you guys so touchy about specific forums? Looking for help from wherever it comes from is a good thing.
That little clue about numbers matching would have helped me yesterday, regardless of what phone I was using. ANd it will help someone in the future.
If it was an htc forum I might have said something different, but I still would have said something.
Telling someone to gtf out of your forum for no good reason is just silly.
Everyone is here to help. That's all there is. If no one needed help, there wouldn't be an XDA.
but ya, I'll stay out of your guy's forum. not that I post alot or anything.
Don't choke on your lollypop
And here I thought I was being nice. I don't remember telling anyone to gtfo....I simply said to post in your phones forum. Well good luck. Happy flashing.
All I said was that this isn't the S3 section. Was that so wrong? Many things are device dependent. So many things can't be given support for unless you have our device.

I tried to deactivate and re-activate it. I tried signing out then back in. I tried to use a different account. I just can't seem to get my Google Voice to be my voice-mail like I had on my Nexus One (which took about 4 seconds to setup..). So I've searched and found no answers on how to connect it. Any advice guys?
"Failed to retrieve and save current forwarding number settings. Do you want to switch to the new provider anyway?"
I hit "Yes"
"Forwarding number change unsuccessful. Please contact your carrier if this problem persists."
I experienced the same thing when trying to link my gvoice to my Amaze.
I contacted T-Mobile and they explained this was a known issue and they would alert me when it was resolved.... and I have yet to be notified. I assume this is because the case is still open. It was network related from what I gathered.
If you hear anything from Tmo or HTC please update this thread on PM me. This is my only real problem with the Amaze. Oh and otterbox giving us the middle finger... lol
ok i got a i717 note and a att striaght talk sim card. I finially got the APN setting that came with the straight talk sim to save. Phone is making calls and messaging but the data services are not working. What am i doing wrong?
If your settings are like the ones in the screenshots I posted, then I would say there is likely problems with data im your area.
my settings are the exact same. no luck

also my carrier says "HOME" in the top left corner. I wonder if this has something to do with it?
Mine displays HOME when I pull down the notifications window and only for a few seconds when in the lock screen. Other than that it doesn't display HOME from what I've noticed. I don't think you have to worry about the what is displayed as the carrier's name. Since you are able to make phone calls and received messages (both SMS and MMS?) and the only thing that is not working is just data, then it's probably something in the phone configuration or a problem in your area. If you haven't done so yet I would recommend contacting Straight Talk.
What symbol, if any, do you have to the left of the signal bar?
I know this probably isn't the case but did your turn Wifi off? If not try turning it on or off and making sure it stays off so you can connect to the data network.
I don't know if you have done so but you could try a factory reset, not sure if this would help.
If none of the above works you could try rooting and flashing the AT&T stock rom to the phone or some other rom. (Consult this recommendation with someone more experienced here on the forums. Personally, I don't see more troubleshooting options.)
If there is no problem with the network and none of the above works then I think your phone may be damaged, unless it used to work perfectly with AT&T. Did you switch from AT&T to Straight Talk or did you buy the buy through ebay or on the street to activate ti with them?
Hi
I've searched around and read a lot but couldn't find the answer to my problem.
Here is my issue.
When I dial a number, it tries to call then ends the call right away before it even rings.
Can't receive calls either.
Can't send sms, nor receive sms.
Additional info.
I have full signal and it says my carrier on the status bar
Imei is correct - same as back of phone
Phone is unlocked - checked status
Unlocked with Galaxsim unlock, paid version
used repair gsii by helroz, didn't work
apn is picked up by the phone
carrier sim applications menu shows but don't work
Went back to stock with mobile odin, all the way to gingerbread which I'm using right now.
Please advice on what to do, any help is appreciated.
Interesting; I've never heard of this particular problem before. The first thing I would try would be a different modem, because that's a very easy fix. Also, incorrect APN's could be a factor, even though you say you've already checked that. I would advise checking them again - slowly. Sometimes something as simple as an extra space (or lack thereof, in the case of the 'default, supl' portion of the APN) can cause them not to work correctly.
Good luck.
I've flashed different modems and that didn't work.
Caller ID in settings give error network or sim card problem it says.
Btw I'm trying with different by Sims and both work on other phones.
Apn is correct I double checked. It picked it up auto.
Let me if you think of something else.
Thanks.
