[Q] Things to do after root - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

Hello,
I recently rooted my Samsung GS4 and not real savvy to all the in and outs of a rooted phone. Anyhow after much research on XDA and in my opinion there are some necessary apps or things you should do after rooting. With that said I installed the root checker app to verify that I did have root. I also installed Titanium backup for file backups and ES file explore. I also un-installed the SDM 1.0 file using Titanium backup to stop all future OTA updates.
I did try and install Safestrap but was not successful. The problem I had with the Safestrap installation is the state of my phone is indicating not installed. I was able to downloaded Safestrap to my phone and I was able to hit the install recovery tab and I received a message stating that Safestrap installed I also have the icon as well. However the state on my phone reads not installed and I cannot run reboot to recovery not sure what the problem is. I ran the install a couple of time just to be sure but no luck.
Is installing Safestrap that important once you are rooted? At this point in time I am not planning on changing or adding any roms yet until I am more comfortable.
With all the things that I listed is there anything I am missing or any person should do as a priority to have success using a rooted phone and keep us out of trouble?
My next project is to figure out how to tether and use my hotspot as I have unlimited data. Thanks

Safe strap install is a 2 step process.
Step one is to install the apk.
Step two is to open the safestrap program and install the recovery.

Thanks for the links I have looked at them and they are full of info. When I rooted I was not sure what all to do, I guess there was no real "check list" for us noobs to follow. LOL thanks again

I have a feeling on the post pone date it will automatically update.

I'd also like to know about this. I used CASUAL to root my phone, and while I appreciate the features in the 4.1.2 update, I really don't want to lose root. Any insight into this matter would be appreciated.
Perhaps this is what you are looking for if your just worried about keeping root:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=org.projectvoodoo.otarootkeeper&hl=en
Updating won't 'brick' your phone (not sure if that is even possible with this phone without doing something incredibly drastic). Worst case you can always Odin back to stock - just back everything up first. Excellent guide here on how to do that:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024207
But since you are unlocked I would look into flashing a custom ROM to get the full advantage of it (Jelly Beans or CleanRom are excellent). Tutorial on that is also in the link above.
Hope this helps.

I clicked yes on the update and now I get this message on boot and I can't get to the recovery menu:
“System software not authorized by Verizon Wireless has been found on your phone. Please turn off your phone and go to the nearest Verizon Wireless store for help.”
Things I did to my phone prior to this:
- rooted with Framapak
- CWM installed
- Encrypted the internal storage
I'll be praying to Odin tonight...
Use Root Explorer or equivalent and delete the SDM.apk in system/apps. This is the apk that checks for updates.
Oh and if you want to keep root it is never a good idea to accept an OTA update.

Odin can be picky after using casual also (try the rooted odin file if stock fails as well, thats what i had to do). You may need to remove the casual drivers as well for odin to recognize the phone, below is a link on that:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zzghcV8HVVk
Also the new release of casual for the 4.1.2 update is set to be released tonight, does anyone know if he could just re-run and to get root and a custom recovery back?
Hopefully not needed.

Thankfully I was able to get it to boot into recovery mode eventually. Odin and Kies worked correctly to recognize the phone in download mode and I tried the root66 image with no luck. I'm downloading the VRALJB now to see if that works.
Update: I got my phone back to stock using the guide heric1 posted and the "alternate restore" image here. No bricks in my house.
Use this to update won't loose root...

Take a look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2261478 created by developer beanstown106. Here you will find the latest update modified and placed into a flashable zip file through your custom recovery. If you flash one of those two files that he has, you can have the latest update, keep your root and unlocked bootloader, and be on a stock ROM.
There are two versions of the stock 4.1.2 ROM. The odex version doesn't allow for custom themes to be flash over the stock ROM, while the deodex version does allow for custom themes to be flashed over the stock ROM.
If you don't want 4.1.2 altogether, you can use Titanium Backup or My Backup Pro to freeze the SDM 1.0 file. A slightly more challenging method would be to use Root Explorer or something similar to it to go in and modify the name of the file.
---------- Post added at 10:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 10:07 AM ----------
For me I use the odex because I have no intention on using themes. My custom ROM and theming days have long passed. All I need is the ability create backups of my stock ROM and the ability to take advantage or root required applications such as Titanium Backup and My Backup Pro.

I ended up doing a nandroid back up aswell ass app and data backup and flashing beans. With the help from a admin over at note2forums. So that's my update and I'm digging 4.1.2
I also got something from here that made multi window fantastic and a clear notification bar as well as other goodies.

[Q] Rooted MJ7, what now?

Hey guys, completely new here. I have had my S4 for awhile now and decided to finally root my device. I came across the vroot method and rooted my MJ7 s4. I now (stupidly) realize that not only is there little support for MJ7, but also that vroot has not been confirmed safe as it is a Chinese root method. My phone appears to work perfectly and I can confirm that it is rooted under MJ7 with no issues so far, but my question is: is there any way to err...uproot it and go back to stock until a safe method is confirmed? Or should I just wait until an Odin file is released? Like I said the phone works perfectly, I am just cautious and don't know what the next step is. Thanks!

Well you're on mj7 like I am and that means we sit and wait for someone to find us a way to either run Safestrap or a bootloader unlock for custom recovery.
There already are Odin files in here and someone made a script to remove the Chinese superuser you're talking about and replace it with chainfires supersu.
Search around on here a little bit Youll find all that.

Okay great, I assume I used the same method as you did, I also have supersu so I suppose that means the Chinese garbage is gone. There really can't be any harm in leaving it in the current rooted MJ7 state right? I mean support will be released eventually. Waiting for safestrap seems like the best option just as far as safety is concerned. I have zero experience with rooting or flashing so I will wait for support to do a Titanium backup or something.

No that's our only option as of now. I'd go into titanium and freeze sdm and fwupgrade so that in the event there is another OTA you can wait to see if there is a method to retain root through it. Always look on here first before taking any OTA.!!!
I'm on mj7 rooted and I'm running xposed framework to customize my s4 quite a bit... And then I just remove /freeze everything I don't want using Titanium. And I'm happy with my phone.
The devs are working on both Safestrap and unlocking the bootloader. It's a lot of work but those guys are on here working diligently.

I really should have done more research before doing this, but can you explain to me the reason to use safestrap when you have flashed a recovery on Titanium backup? I thought that if you screwed anything up you could just revert to your last flash on Titanium. Also unlocking the bootloader is going to allow us to use custom ROMS right? Sorry, really trying to get up to speed, it's a difficult time to get into this with MJ7. I really just want to go about this in the safest way possible.

Well.. Couple things..
First off since we have an mj7 Verizon S4 there is no flashing anything at all. No roms at all. Titanium backup is a tool that can save all your system and user data/apps. As well as uninstall and freeze things.
Safestrap if it ever gets to us just allows the flashing of roms on a '' safe'' location on our phones. It doesn't touch our actual mj7 Samsung Touchwiz.
No custom recovery like Clockwork Mod for us because the bootloader is locked up!
There are many people on here working on both of these issues with the bootloader itself and going the Safestrap route as well.
For now grab titanium and freeze those two things I mentioned earlier so that your phone recieves no further updates. You don't want an update until you know there is a safe way to root, or keep root, if that's important to ya.
Other than that you can use xposed framework and modules to hook up you're phone.

First of all, I want to say thanks so much for helping me. I know it wasn't addressed in the title of my thread but I really do appreciate it. I have noticed that people seem skeptical about doing anything on the rooted MJ7 framework so I just thought I should ask of its safe to do Titanium without bricking my phone? Not only have I never done it before but I am cautious if it is safe because I haven't backed anything up yet. Didn't want to use an old method now that we are on MJ7). Can I use the current version of titanium with MJ7 safely? Also what can I do with the Xposed framework? I thought that was used to load custom ROMS?
Thank you SO much.
Alright, so I have some questions that can probably be chalked up in the 'Rooted MJ7, what now?' category. I can't specifically find these answers, but I've read a ton of what basically boils down to, you can't do sh*t with mj7.
So I realize there's no flashing ROMs on mj7, which sucks a big one, but that's fine, I'll deal.
I've rooted the phone via vroot and all is good there. Triangle away doesn't seem to work, but whatever. It's highly unlikely that I'll need to take the phone into the store.
My biggest gripe is that I can't seem to get adb to work to push files to the phone. I keep getting 'permission denied' errors when I get to the 'adb push ..............' part. Near as I can tell from my reading, this is because the bootloader is locked. Is that right? I tried adding 'ro.secure=1' to 0 in default.prop, but that didn't work. I was trying to push a modded services.odex to /system/framework. Does anyone know how to get adb fully working on a rooted mj7? If you check my sig., you'll see that I'm not a total noob persay. I've been using adb for years. I have all the right files installed on my PC and what not.

Titanium is not used to load roms. It's used for backing things up primarily and that's it. It can also uninstall /freeze things, but that's all.
There's not really much we can do now except use xposed framework/mods to customize our phones. It is very safe and everything is located right here on xda.
For now take a look at this

No there's no custom recovery or even Safestrap, which means no roms yet unfortunately.
There's no triangle away either but I've seen some folks working on something like Knox Away which is the same kind of thing since we're all stuck with Knox now!
As far as your ADB questions I'm not your guy for that. I'd say though that maybe it's got to do with the new security we have on these things now for sure.
I'm sure someone way more qualified than me can lead you in the right direction.

I've deleted all the Knox files I could find (about 12 or so) using FX Explorer along with some other security stuff that I found. I guess that's not enough to fully get rid of Knox since I still have that 'custom' screen at boot...
Man, I really wish I would have done more reading before deciding to go with a Samsung. Oh well, despite all this, it's still a great phone.
Thanks for your reply.

No there's no getting rid of Knox, it's part of the actual bootloader and kernel on some level. You can get rid of the Knox app which is on our phones but that's about it.
I was thinking the same thing about getting an S4 but from what I've read this sort of security is going to be more common on a lot of phones not just Samsung.
That custom screen went away on my phone, I wouldn't worry so much about that.
The s4 is an awesome phone, take a look at all the xposed modules you can add and really customize it.

BEST POST EVER.
One of my kids pushed the OTA through when I had rebooted into stock and let her use my phone for a day. Two weeks of Hell, but I knew someone would find the way through this darkness!!
GREAT job! Thank you!!!
This works perfectly, just follow the instructions to the letter!
Too much following of directions
I towelrooted this morning, installed SU (chainfire's) - got the same error "cannot parse package" - however it worked even though when I went in SU it said the binary was wrong and updating it would fail (play store version). Tried to do the CWM method since i got frustrated at the SU error - and the CWM soft bricked the phone. Now im going to odin it back to stock - when the download is done in 2 hours... Oh well all is fair in device freedom and rooting : )
Proud Note 3 owner of ~96 hours so far : )
P.S. Geohot is amazing.
---------- Post added at 08:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:55 PM ----------
Also, of note - titanium backed up the phone prior to the soft bricking - titanium on NC4 still suffers the cannot write to external SD issue.. FYI - if you think your schedules will run - might want to double check.

I just rooted my Note 3 using Towelroot method and it didn't trip the Knox counter
1. Just install Towelroot.apk from http://towelroot.com/
2. Open Towerroot to root than reboot
3. install Root checker from the Play store to check root
4. install Supersu from http://download.chainfire.eu/447/SuperSU/UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99r4.zip - Unzip and install APK, open and let it uninstall Knox and Reboot.
For more details refer to - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2783157
Installing Safestrap:
After Rooting and Supersu is installed follow below steps to install safestrap:
1. Install Busybox app from Play store https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=stericson.busybox&hl=en
2. Install Safestrap from herehttp://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2517610 and follow instructions in the thread

NC4 Stock Rooted!
Just found the Towelroot information off the internet and decided to apply on my stock NC4 rom.
It worked fine without any issues!
Installed the APK file and ran it. After the reboot, I installed SuperSu too. Now I'm able to install and invoke all APKs requiring root access!
It seems like there's none yet mentioned about the Knox void count. I checked the Knox void count and it's still 0!
Thanks to Geohot for this great rooting apk!
Still no "perfect" love on SU
It did the busybox and twrp just fine - but still get the binary update message / close on SuperSU
After the data wipe / redownload of UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.99r4.zip .. same result.
it works, and prompts - just cannot enter the application. Guess its just wait until further version.
Thanks for the guide - worked perfectly (steps wise) - now to tip Geohot and go to bed.
I have successfully rooted and installed safestrap on my stock nc4 note 3 however when I try to install jellybeans build 6 into romslot 1 and boot to it, the phone never shows a boot screen after the safestrap screen. I get a blue led and nothing else.
Any ideas? Maybe 4.3 isn't compatible with the new modem?

OK Now My Wife's Brand New Verizon S4 is Rooted

Howdy-
I just finished rooting my wife's brand new S4 using towlroot. Installed SuperSU and now have safestrap 3.72 installed (TWRP is a no-go). I have never had a Samsung device before.
I mainly did this because I wanted to get root before some update came out that prevented it in the future. In a couple years, when my wife needs a new phone and this one get's passed down to my son for a game machine, I wanted to be ready to put a custom ROM on it.
Any recommendations on anything I should do with this phone in the meantime? I turned off OTA updates already and did a nandroid via Safestrap but would love to hear any suggestions you guys might have for good apps etc. for this phone.
BTW, her previous phone was an HTC Rezound. What a nice upgrade this S4 is!
Thanks,

I would suggest installing the Xposed Framework and browsing through modules. It's amazing how many interesting modules you can find that are useful or fun or whatever. GravityBox is a very useful module that gives you tons of options for tweaking the OS (actually not sure if there is a non-AOSP version). Another one is XLED, which lets you adjust the color/timing of the led notification light for different apps. I just find it fun looking through modules and finding creative things people have made. Cheers!

Absolutely XposedFramework. There are many modules on here that you will find beneficial. I would recommend however, installing them one at a time as sometimes some of the modules will not work correctly with your device. I know that a couple that had something to do with altering the display caused my phone to flash on and off. I know this is pretty unspecific but it has been a couple months and I can't specifically remember what the modules were. As far as apps go... I would recommend CPU Tuner if you want to play around with battery life and performance, Titanium Backup is a MUST as you can backup Apps and App Data to your SD Card, the paid for version will even let you freeze certain processes. For example, you can stop the annoying security update notifications. You can also use TB to remove any bloatware you do not want. Greenify is excellent as well, it hibernates apps and help quite a bit with battery performance. SuperSU is vital and will control all your root permissions for all your apps. SD Card and RAM booster from Gejos Enterprise are helpful also.
Thanks for your advice!

You may be able to simply turn off updates by going to settings/more/security/security updates and unchecking the box called automatic updates. I am on a custom ROM and to be honest, I can not remember if this works or not so if it does, please let me kmow.

Hi Again All-
Well I installed Titanium Backup PRO. I got a little crazy and started uninstalling a bunch of stuff...all the KNOX stuff and some other things. Anyway, just about freaked when the phone would not boot, giving me some errors. Ended up getting back into Safestrap and restored my Nandroid and then my Titanium Backup that I made. I then re-verified root with towel root and uninstalled then reinstalled Safestrap.
But now, something is happening that I never noticed before. During Boot in pauses at a screen that says SAFESTRAP : DISABLED (System Starting in 10 seconds). There's a picture of a robot and buttons at the bottom for Recovery and Continue. Is that normal? Is it because I am running a stock NC5 ROM?
Another question....it's my understanding I am stuck with SafeStrap. But most of the ROMS I see in the forums don't seem to have instructions for installation using Safestrap...only TWRP or CWM? Am I just not looking hard enough?
Sorry I am coming from an HTC phone that seemed so easy to flash compared to this but I guess it is just a learning curve.
BTW: I ended up uninstalling a bunch of bloatware again. And I FROZE all the KNOX stuff I could find. Anything else I should freeze?

That is just the normal boot sequence for Safestrap. "Continue" will boot whatever is loaded in the stock slot (only use the stock slot, booting into any other partition WILL SOFT BRICK YOUR DEVICE), selecting "recovery" will boot you into safestrap. Doing nothing is the same as selecting "continue". There are not many ROM's compatible with Safestrap, and unfortunately, Safestrap is the only recovery you can use on your Verizon S4. I would recommend Hyperdrive, it is very stable. I have tried too many other ROM's to list and have found most of them either unstable or incompatible with Safestrap.

Awesome. Thank you! I want to try Hyperdrive.
I have never used Safestrap to install a ROM. So far I have only performed a Nandroid. Is there a step-by-step published somewhere on how to install a new ROM with Safestrap? I have no idea how to 'load a ROM into a slot' and want to make sure I don't do anything to brick my wife's phone. You can image how that would go!!
Thanks,

This is the link to the newest version of HyperDrive, it just came out the other day and I'm pretty sure there are instructions for flashing on here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2301724
This is a how to video from YouTube from an older version of HyperDrive http://m.youtube.com/watch?list=PLdq__cOJ2egzOEqUSbxTCZEMmE1I7b4q-&v=_IEqyRgRenA
If I remember correctly, it explains safestrap in the beginning of the video. In any case, only install/boot from the 'STOCK' slot. Booting into any other partition will brick your device.

Safestrap boots whatever ROM is loaded into whichever slot you have selected. I think the top left button is called 'Boot Options', this is where you select the 'slot'. As long as 'stock' is selected you are good with regards to which 'slot' you are booting into. Selecting 'install' from the main menu will install whatever ROM you flash into whichever 'slot' you have selected. 'Install' should always be red, this means you are installing into the stock slot.

MJ7 to NC5 and Root?

Okay so I have been looking around a bit and want to make sure I fully understand what I am doing before I do it. I am currently on MJ7, rooted, and running Safestrap with Hyperdrive 15. I want to remove Safestrap, upgrade MJ7 to NC5, re-root using Towelroot, and reinstall Safestrap. Can I do this by simply taking the OTA for NC5, or will that not work because I am rooted? Or should I Odin the NC5 firmware by getting it from the Sam Mobile site. Or am I completely out of line and can't do any of that because its not possible to gain root on stock NC5. Any help would be great, I just want to know if my thinking is correct. Thanks.
Just use Odin to upgrade then you can use towelroot, it works for nc5.

So there is no need to remove safestrap or rom slot 1 or anything like that? Just Odin the tar.md5 using AP mode? I thought is was best to remove safestrap and all rom slots and then do a wipe before flashing with Odin. Is that total not needed. At least I now understand I can towelroot NC5, that's a good thing. Just want to ensure I am not going to cause any issues with the flash process. Thanks.

Well that depends on what file you use. If you want to keep your user/app data then you'll have to do all that and flash the no wipe image. Or if you don't care about that data you can use the full wipe image and not worry about any of that.

I have a question along these lines also. I rooted my galaxy s4 with towlroot and installed titanium backup and superuserSU. In may the software was updated automatically to NC by verizon. I was able to load sfestrap, forgot the verson, 7.0 or 7.1 I think but it would not work. It wanted 4 or 5 gigs to do anything. I deleted safestrap and enough programs that there are 6 gigs open now.All I want to do if make a complete backup in case of serious crash.
When I try to open Safestrap 7.1 now to unstall I get a 'parsing error' notice. Dont know what that means.
Thanks for any help.

You want version 3.72 found here http://blog.hash-of-codes.com/downloads/safestrap/ The only time SS has ever required that much memory when I have used it is when creating a new ROM slot, which you do not need to do if you are only trying to make a backup. You will also need Busybox from the play store before you are able to install recovery via Safestrap

I just completed this process a few moments ago. Everything worked perfectly and I am running Safestrap 3.72, I think you meant to say 3.70 or 3.71. I first downloaded the files mentioned above by josh, then just for good measure I deleted my rom slot 1 and Safestrap from MJ7, then I entered download mode and used Odin to flash the tar.md5 in AP and PIT file in PIT. Once that was complete I Towelrooted, installed SuperSU, and installed Safestrap 3.72. There is a slight trick to installing Safestrap and that is to change SE Linux to Permissive vice Enforcing. Here is a link from RootJunky that should help you https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BLHZfPwLkPM. I then went into Safestrap and made a backup of my Stock NC5 ROM. After that I installed Hyperdrive RLS17.1 using Safestrap. There is a trick with that as well. It can only be installed to the stock slot right now, which is normally a no no, but right now it has to be done that way. Everything worked perfectly. I do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions before doing any of this and it has always rewarded me with successful flashes. Hopefully this might help you or others.
