I came from an s3, flashed it to death, I'm getting withdrawl...
I Understand that unlocking the bootloader on the z1 broke various things.
Like camera (although I believe thats resolved in the latest update) and also the x reality?
Except I've read that unlocking the bootloader on z2 would lead to less quality on my camera?
Is this true?
Also, on z1 and other xperia phones, didn't they manage to enable xreality even without locked bootloader?
So, my question is simply this: without mentioning warranty
What do I lose by unlocking my bootloader, and anything thats lost could potentially get restored unofficially?
and could someone also interested in unlocking the bootloader, take some pictures before and after the unlock... please?
Things that are lost after unlock
DRM Keys
Warranty
Things that break:
X-Reality
OTA Update/any kind of update through sony pc companion or update service
Things that change:
All of the above
Updating and stuff , or anything at all. Just ask

Official Sony response:
Dear Jacek,
Thank you for contacting Sony Xperia™ Online Support.
In regards to the email that we receive from you about what you loose when you unlock the bootloader, we can tell you that the features that the phone has intergated you are able to keep them like the one that you mentioned. We are sorry for any incovenience this may cause. Thank you for been part of the Sony Xperia™ Family.

I mentioned X-Reality and BIONZ. I don't know how reliable this answer is... Seems quite vague.
Their reply just says nothing is lost in fancy talk
I think x-reality engine stops but i cant test right now
I dont even have a rom installed

Sure, keep us posted.
Thanks for the replies guys.
So it seems nothing is lost...
Ota isn't an issue since.. Well we'll be flashing tweaks anyway.
X reality and camera is the thing I was most worried about and their email reply seems to confirm they're preserved.
So what are the drm keys for!!?

What about ps4 connectivity and other Sony exclusive things? Anyone?

Ps3 controller connection works fine, even throwing music to a ps3 and 4 works fine with a UBL (unlocked bootloader)

thanks for testing that, i heard there was ps4 camera connectivity.
For example: using playroom, draw on phone, the object comes to life on your camera ps4 screen and can be interacted with.
Seems a petty thing to ask but I just want the full lowdown on whats lost via unlock, this seems to be a sony exclusive z2 and z2tab feature so I'm wondering.. do drm keys affect ps4 interactivity in that way?
My XReality and "offers" are working just fine. I also updated to 17.1.A.2.55 yesterday through companion...
I was thinking about this the other day, if the drm keys (ta folder) are exclusive to each handset and sony themselves provide key for bootloader unlock, wouldnt sony be able to provide the folder if we supplied the serial number, imei etc. Obviously i'd be better off asking sony, just wondered what others thought? I can't see any reason why they wouldnt be able to, but can maybe understand why they may not want to
@shollywood...
You're rooted? If so, is the walkman app downloading music info? That seemed to be the other thing people mentioned might break

What exactly are these "offers" if I may ask? Also, does xreality even make a difference?
Can someone confirm that nothing important (except the warranty) is lost after unlocking bootloader ?
I dont't mind OTA updates and special offers.

Ok, I will wait before unlocking my device, I want to know exactly what I'll lose. For the moment, noone seems able to report precisely what is lost... It's really a shame...
Then, maybe a method to backup TA partition will be found sooner or later.

Yeah I am going to wait and see what happens. Now that more are getting the phone we will recieve more data and hopefully more people can look for exploits. Who knows maybe we don't even need to unlock the bootloader :victory:

if anything they are not dodgy, at least not setool..
I would advise to find someone with SETool box and do it over the web. There are even user here at XDA, and people are satisfied with their service.

Read first post, he say his phone is locked, sim-locked.
There's nothing dodgy about omnius either it works perfectly, I did mine with it at the last freebie session at easter.
With se tool there is someone remotely connected to help you through.
With omnius your on your own, but it shows you what to do, also read the sticky on unlocking by test point, because both methods require test point.
If you want it unlocked now, pay or just wait am sure there'll be other free periods

Since you are saying it is a sim lock is this the fault of T-Mobile?

I thought the bootloader would be unlockable when I bought it.
The ROM has all kinds of junk I don't want loaded into it, there is a lack of options (maybe I have been spoilt by CyanogenMod) and it does silly things like not playing alarms over speakers when earphones are plugged in and playing notifications over speakers when earphones are plugged in.
Thanks del1701 I will probably get in contact with him.

Just for your information, only small number of countries have law that tele operaters NEED to sim-unlock your phone. I'm not going into discussion if that is good law or not.
Next time try thinking a bit before you start accusing someone(for stealing or something else)!
Most contracts add up to the cost of the phone anyway, so it's hardly stealing, like the firms would do it if it wasn't still profitable.

Im sorry but you lost me at "sim-unlocked".
If you read the first post, the OP intentionally wanted to buy an unlockable bootloader phone. Instead, he acquired it through network providers (i assume cheaper than stores). He then complains here that it can't be unlocked. If thats what he wanted in the first place, then why doesnt he purchase one straight from the store, which is bootloader unlockable???
The reason network providers offer those phones cheap is because the client and provider enter into an exclusivity contract, which in return the client uses their services for a certain time frame. If or UNTIL that timeframe has lapsed, then technically the phone is still owned by the network. The simlocking and bootloader locking is merely just an insurance on their part.
Its like "buying" a car but paying in installment... If you chopped it up for parts before settling the amount in FULL, it is in most countries, called STEALING...because its not yours YET to begin with.
Sent from my MT11i using Tapatalk
Can't see mention of using provider for price.
I think he meant he picked this phone knowing it was unlockable, didn't think/know about network subsidy locks.
Hello, I'll receive my Tablet Z today.
I wanna install CM10 to that tabet immediately. Is that possible without loosing warranty? If yes, how?
As I've seen, I have to enter the serial code at Sony's homepage so that they can see it's unlocked and rooted.
As I saw, there's a stable version of CM10 for the pollux.
Thanks in advance!

Just because you've submitted the IDID or IMEI to Sony to get the unlock code doesn't mean you've actually unlocked it - so how can Sony tell just from that?
If you do decide to unlock the bootloader, you should try to back up all the DRM keys first. I don't know how - but there is info on this if you search.
I'd also seriously think about whether it's worth doing. I unlocked my bootloader and installed CM10.1 - but I've gone back to stock Sony ROM because at the moment on custom ROMs :
- GPS doesn't work (on wifi only models)
- the touch screen sensitivity problem is not fixed (it is fixed on the latest Sony ROMs).
- I can't really see that much benefit with the custom ROMs at the moment, especially as you would void your warranty
I have the LTE model so the GPS is no problem for me.
The problem is, Sony's customized android runs horrible. chrome is jerky, stucks, and is slow. Also everything else is really not fast. Compared to my CM10.1 running Note II N7100.
One Reason would be, that the WiFi with the stock rom is quite lame. In my bed (4m and 2 thin walls away from the ap) i had WiFi from time to time with a max signal strength of 1 bar. With CM 10.1 i always and immediately got 3-4.

I'm pretty sure that Sony can't see whether or not the Tablet (or any mobile phone for that matter) is unlocked or not. That's because the unlocking happens at "phone" level and is a programmed setting change that happens. It doesn't require the use of any service that they have access to.
The only company I know of that will generally know if one of their devices are unlocked are Apple because the official unlocking method is done through iTunes and uses their iTunes servers for an update.
@mobileunlocked - in order to unlock, one must submit imei/serial on the Sony website. Are you confusing bootloader unlock with sim unlock?

Hi,
I'd like to know the real life consequences of unlocking the bootloader.
It says here: http://unlockbootloader.sonymobile.com/
Certain functions in your device might cease to work,
and:
Certain content on your device may also be inaccessible due to the removal of DRM security keys and the secure user data partition while unlocking the boot loade
Does anyone know what will cease to work without the DRM keys? PSN Store? Throw.
I can't find anthing except this vague fomula "certain functions" , they could state exactly what will stop working.
These are Sony specific things needed for Sony related apps. If you have a non sony tablet and have been happy with it you won't miss them. I think it disables some audio and vidoe enhancements too that I would probably turn off anyway! The only major issue would be if it stopped being able to use the play station controllers or psn related things. There have been people who have rooted and I'll post in the rooting thread and ask them to check.

I think the DRM keys would be an important risk to understand. They are typically required for much online content nowadays and if you lose them, it may not work with many movie type sites that utilize them.

...And good riddance , I hate DRM anyway.
Hello everyone. New Z2 owner here, long history with android though! I tried searching around but found a little bit of information before posting. I have a D6503, build number 17.1.2.A.0.214 (ATT USA) and i cant seem to figure out what broke my playstation app. When i first opened the phone yesterday everything worked well, this morning i unlocked bootloader (didnt back up my TA keys im such an idiot) and that was successful. Really wish i did more research on backing up my DRM keys, first sony phone and lesson learned.
I didn't flash a rom, nor do i have root and still giving me an error when trying to sign in over and over. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling, even factory flashed a tf file like it just came out the box. What could be wrong? I know once you unlock bootloader you lose DRM keys, but did unlocked break my playstation app? Any helped would be appreciated.

and error C-80F80A01 on remote play
Same errors here, ive tried asking if its related to drm but didnt get a response, uninstalling updates for playstation app from the play store will make it work, not getting anywhere with remote play tho, i think drm keys may have been added with new version because i dont see many people complaining that its not working, the few who have complained have unlocked bootloaders and Z3 forums have remote play confirmed broke if bootloader unlocked.
However if this is the case then i cannot understand how people have it ported and running on non sony phones....... for the record i cant get the port working either

Well after a long chat with sony chat support, i didnt get a straight answer but it would appear that remote play is broken due to loss of drm keys, on that note anyone want to swap a bootloader unlocked z2 (with no ta backup) for an unlockable z2? lol
I'm locked bootloader, and had trouble, as soon as I deleted super su app, ps4 remote play worked again

Considering the same to be honest, cant say i got this phone because of remote play (got it back in april) i was gonna get an xperia anyway, but went for the z2 mostly in case of any compatibility with my ps4, wasnt possible to root and backup when i unlocked, but the playstation app and all my other worked fine after unlocking, 6 months with a great phone then bam, cant use my usual playstation app or new remote play, wouldn't have unlocked if i knew that was gonna happen, worst part is, about 2 weeks after i unlocked someone discovered a way to root n backup first, grrrrrrrr
On the plus side, im not a devoloper or anything, but i tried loads of methods of getting some kind of temp root access to pull that TA file back then, that mod, while not making anything work, it has created a folder on my phone that i havent seen since may......

Sony broke remote play on purpose, they just launched the Z3, thats one of the only features people would actually buy a sony phone to be honest. Sony knows this. If they allowed all over phones to access remote play then they'd never sell any phones. I get it, but it still sucks. Remote play is gone for now. No way unless a dev cooks up a way to make it work without DRM keys. Im sure, then even sony predicted that so they have ways of locking it out. The G3 was the perfect phone ive used to date minus the screen. If LG would have only included a 1080p screen instead of a QHD 2k screen, it would have been 10/10. The screen just drains too much battery and not needed yet in technology for phones. It really drains the battery so much. I would say pass on it. Also there is zero development to be honest. Get a Nexus 6 or something else. All those phones ive listed id say pass on and wait for something better.

The screen just drains too much battery and not needed yet in technology for phones. It really drains the battery so much. I would say pass on it. Also there is zero development to be honest. Get a Nexus 6 or something else. All those phones ive listed id say pass on and wait for something better.

I'm really drawn to the G3 so given what you've described here if I just added an extended battery or just carried a spare sounds ideal
I must admit the Z2 has been quite impressive with battery life I can from note 3 which was/is a superb device I swapped to Z2 just for a change the numerous problems ha email just put me off
Notifications
The fact I can see the digitizer touch panel points on the screen
Now block psn app and remote play
In don't find the touch screen as responsive/accurate as other devices
Got someone looking for a straight trade for G3 so may take them up on it

I was used to having Lte and being able to be on a call and use Internet. I thought all high end phones were capable of it so now I'm kinda annoyed this phone can't. Is 5.0 supposed to fix this
Mod edit done by @gregbradley. Please bear in mind XDA is for all ages.
Your two options are here:
1. Now with root, there's possibility to unlocking bootloader. With unlocked bootloader, you can do custom rom. With custom rom, that's where you can freely do the options of anything whoever desires to do what, I'm guessing.
2. Continue to wait for lollipop from Verizon. Really stupid that T-Mobile has confirmed two lollipop updates but Verizon is no news.

Sign up for a Google voice number and use Google hangouts dialer which works on a data connection or WiFi.

I use it at home since my cellular service is weak. When someone calls my cell it forwards to my Google voice # after a few rings through my wifi on my phone, tablet, pc or any other device that works with GV.

Being able to root does not mean you can unlock the bootloader. The bootloader on this variant is locked and cannot be unlocked.
Oh I know that. Eventually though, this will be unlocked. Whenever someone is able to get the unlock keys from Sony.

I do not think so. No Sony phone has had an unofficial bootloader unlock since the Xperia Neo, released in 2011 (iirc) as no dev is working on an unofficial unlock because Sony allows people to unlock on some devices. Why try and unlock the caged, barred, alarmed window when they give you the key to the front door?
It is a very smart move from Sony as all the incentive to find an unofficial unlock is gone. I am not saying it wont happen, but going off past experience its not just that it is very difficult, its just that no one is even trying....

No VoLTE until VZW flips the switch for this devices. Even a Lollipop update is no guarantee. The HTC One M8 is on 5.0.1 and still has no VoLTE, even those that are S-Off, unlocked, rooted, ROM'd yadda yadda

The Sony Xperia Z3 is officially unlocked with the only problem that you'll lose the DRM keys that gives the camera special qualities. And we've achieved root so far, so it's not that no one is trying, it's just security is much tighter.

Erhm, I'd like to know where you know the HTC One M8 is lacking simultaneous voice and data. My brother has one rooted, unlocked, and all that and he can make calls while browsing. So wherever you heard that from... better check your resources again.

I think the M8 always had simultaneous voice and data, that's not VoLTE, I should ,have called it "Enhanced 4G" although it's part of it for the newest devices. The simultaneous voice/data will be part of the "enhanced 4G" for the newest devices, and, AFAIK, there's no way to hack around that. The other parts of Enhanced 4G, i.e. HD calling and video calling are still not available for the M8, even for those that have been able to get the toggle activated.

Lol, the only part I'm still really concerned about is the basic necessity function for simultaneous voice and data. I don't see what significant differences enhanced calling or whatnot will make as long as either person on each other's line can hear perfectly while also being able to browse data that can be important for the moment. It's basically the definition of a "smartphone".
This really makes me rethink my purchase, today I needed to review an email while on the phone with a designer and could not

Your best chance of making up for that is to be connected to wi-fi while on a call.

I know. All xperia Phones since 2012 have been able to be officially unlocked unless the carrier has blocked it. For the Z3 v it has been blocked. Also, the difference between gaining root & and unlocking the boot is massive, Do not expect to get unlocked boots on the Z3 v, There has not even been a working kexec on locked devices for a few years.
Anyway, apologies for the hijack of the thread. My post are for info only

The m8 had voice and data to start with, which means hardware and drivers to support it. Our phone, unfortunately, dies not have that capability and will only be able to do voice and data when volte is implemented. Custom Rom can be installed with locked bootloaders with the appropriate recovery, but not kernel

It definitely gives the Z3v an unlock code when you select the Z3 and type in your ESN here: http://developer.sonymobile.com/unlockbootloader/unlock-yourboot-loader/
I just think we are missing something within our fastboot to put it to use.
Regarding the DRM keys, there is a program in the Z3 section that allows you to back them up and restore them after unlocking the bootloader. So if we can utilize the unlock code we don't have to worry about sacrificing the keys.

That site will always give you a code, that's not the issue. the carrier has it blocked, and no one has bypassed 'Bootloader unlock allowed: No' in about 3 years, and no one is working on it, because if any serious Dev wants an unlocked boot, they just go and buy a device where it is allowed.
Also, DRM restore does not restore the actual keys, once gone they are gone forever. What that process does is to return SOME of the functions that relied on the keys, and not to 100% working like before unlocking. The trick there is that SOME of the functions just checked if DRM keys were present as opposed to actually checking what they were. Hence spoofing some keys enabled SOME functions to partially work again. Better than nothing but not like having the actual keys there. Once Sony knows this they will tighten up the security. Expect this not to work on future devices.
Again, apologies for this, but this has been discussed ad nauseum for 2 years in various xperia devices and nothing has changed yet...

Thank you for clearing all of that up. This is my first Xperia device, so I'm still learning the ins and outs.
