[Q]Sudden huge battery drop after a reboot - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I find there is a huge battery drop (ex from 50% to 10-12%) when I reboot my phone. It even gives a low battery notification and all. With time the % status increases and stabilizes around 40%. It happens irrespective of the Roms.
A search on xda resulted in multiple threads with 2 outcomes -
1. Faulty battery - which can't be the case as sometimes it even gives me 2 days of backup.
2. It's a known issue
Could not get anything concrete on searched threads and hence this post.
Now my queries are below -
1. If it's a known issue, does everyone else face it?
2. What can I do from my end to avoid it? Except, of course, changing the battery.

It only seems to happen to me when I have to force reboot by long pressing power button (say if I get a rare complete freeze). If I reboot normally I don't get the issue. However, I've seen members post that if you reboot to recovery, and then boot from recovery that you won't get the drop.
That being said, remember that it's only the reported value that is wrong. Your battery voltage is (relatively) unchanged before and after the reboot. In other words, rebooting doesn't eat 40% of the available voltage, the available voltage is being incorrectly reported.

So its the reporting from the hardware to software which is incorrect. Is there anything which we should/shouldnt do to avoid this discrepancy? asking because I remember I never got it for almost 2 years, it started almost since 2-3 months only.
Will a fuel-gauge reset work here? have seen it in stweaks.

That's the logical conclusion I've come to, yes. Like I said, to avoid it, you can reboot to recovery and then boot from there. Personally, I ignore it. It goes away if you charge back to 100%, and battery voltage is unchanged as I said. It almost seems random to me, it used to happen a lot to me. Now I haven't had it for about 5-6 months I'd say. And I don't know what's different, nothing that I can put a finger on anyway.
I'm not sure, I've never used reset fuel gauge. If I remember correctly, that will end up in even more screwy battery values once you press it until the next charge (I could be wrong). But search for a proper explanation of what it does, and maybe give it a try. Post up here if you find out anything from your experiments

I slightly disagree to what the member advised/concluded. To my experience this drop happens when you battery is about to die or needs replacement. Get a new battery and no drop will happen.
It would not drop if you hootboot it, the reason behind this is that it does not completely shuts down your phone hence cpu does not work heavly like it does on reboot.

I had tried that twice in past when I was on Dorimanx kernel which screwed up the battery stats for a charge. It came back to displaying normal battery status after a while. Though I did not notice anything specifically good/bad on that matter.
Now it brings me to another doubt.. did i make the matters worse by resetting fuel gauge?

Cant agree with you on a dying battery concept, mate. I am getting such awesome battery life(depending on ROMs) (sometimes 2 days) that I do not think its something related to age of the battery. Its 2.5 years old but still going good, no heating, no sudden deaths.

I think your lucky with the aged battery i would say. Yes, rom plays a big rom here but then i have also noticed if your rom has lot of boot services to start then your cpu will be much active which puts load on battery for power and if battery is weak it will not be able to execute the requored power.
This problem is more with sammu phones

The battery is 2.5 yrs old ?!
This is absolutely the cause of the problem you're seeing (beyond the misreporting stupidity suffered by all Samsung phones already discussed). Replace it.

Replace it just because it misses on reporting correct charge info on reboot? Don't you think it will be a little harsh on current battery?
Jokes apart, it has to give me more signs of aged battery like atleast low backup to start with.

Yeah. Maybe lucky. Not on Sammy roms Btw. Beanstalk, AOSB and cyanfox have given me very good battery life.

Ya as i mentioned all sammy roms are full of junkies which custom rom keep away. As a result it demands less power on boot and keep users happy
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium

Nope, as MistahBungle said already, apart from the the 'usual' Sammy battery reporting issues, a 2.5 year battery is the root cause of your problems.
And I don't agree that the reboot is actually using 40% battery to complete (or that a custom rom with its fewer processes will alleviate this). As I said, the voltage is being reported wrongly. However, you won't see the situation improve without buying a new battery. I suggest you buy a genuine Samsung replacement off eBay or similar, IMO there's no point stuffing around with fakes which aren't their claimed capacity.

New battery it is then. Thanks all.

A small attempt to buy an original battery lead me to the extended 2000 mAh battery link (EB-K1A2EBEGSTD) which I am not finding anywhere in India.
Has anyone bought it recently? or Does anyone has any information about where can I get in India?

I own one but I've had it for about 18 months. It is really good, but as I don't live in India I can't give you any tips for buying one sorry. I got mine off eBay.

Battery Life is terrible (atypical please read)

I got this phone Friday.
I didn't root it Saturday but it was in the back of my head. Before I rooted it, I noticed that the battery life was the worst I had ever seen. I read online that this is a bug in 2.3.6 (good job samsung).
It charged while I was watching some TV, so I rooted it and installed UnNamed. This knocked me down to about 50%. I finished off the battery playing games. Then charged it back to 100%. When it was roughly 58% it froze so I had to pull the battery. When I turned it back on, and the battery was magically at 29%. Which seemed odd to me, is it just inaccurate or how does that work?
The hell is wrong with this phone? Nothing gets to me more than bad battery life. If I can't get this resolved, i'll have to bring it back to AT&T and swap it out for something else.
no advice for you, but mine is going on ebay when the htc ics phone comes. I haven't tried them yet. oh, I'm importing all phones from now on, too.
I noticed the same thing with my samsung get the galaxy nexus has a great battery...

Most more than likely it's the wiring leading up to RAM processor, and, consequently, the flux capacitor, which is probably where your problem is. The flux capacitor is what regulates the battery input/output which can sometimes lead to poor battery life, disappearing battery percentages, and in certain cases where your last name is McFly - time travel.

Search is your friend, this is a well documented situation. In short it's how li tech batteries work in combination with how our fuel gauge works. (it goes off of voltage vs counting mah, and there's voltage sag under high current draw, this equates to it showing lower than it is on reboots at low power)
Battery percentage artificially reports low when the device is rebooted on low battery. This is widely documented on these forums.
If you're returning the phone because of this one small minor glitch, good riddens.
Also, Unnamed 2.x is not immune to the BT-AMP bug that kills battery on UCKK6, since it's based off of UCKK6. This is why many reverted to Unnamed 1.x
And why did you post a new thread on this? There's a dedicated thread for UCKK6 battery issues.
You need to be patient dude. Use search and read through all the related posts in this forum. You can begin with flashing the rooted stock 2.3.4 with KH7.

It's a minor hardware glitch that happens only when you reboot your phone on low battery. Solution is:
1) Accept the weirdness of your battery rising after the glitch
2) Reboot when on charger if the battery is below 50-60%
3) Reboot at a higher level of battery
You didn't magically "lose" 30%+ of battery - that's impossible. You just had the estimate of charge level thrown way off.
As an example of what is possible - right now my typical drain is well below 1%/hour when the phone is sitting in good signal. In weak signal it's about 1%/hour.
Man I don't know what the deal is I'm on this thing gaming web surfing and other **** and I got my wife saying "Your always on your damn phone " and I get 18-20 hours per charge

Is that a problem of battery hardware or the phone? IS this a common problem with all i777? because I havent seen lots of people complaining about this?

It is, as I've said before, the one corner case where our fuel gauge fails. It's the small price we pay for NEVER having to worry about battery recalibration - it will always converge towards truth, the only problem being that high load after a reset (rebooting on low battery) will throw it off for a few hours.

Shuts off randomly. Is this a swollen battery?

Hi,
I have a GT-I9100, running CM10. This has been working great for weeks (since first CM10 experimental). Some time back I started experiencing problems while charging, and I thought it was a faulty charge port. This problem magically "solved" itself, but now I am experiencing random shutt off, freezes, part of the screen going black before it turns off completely. Some times I get to the boot animation, some times it turns off and works for a while, before shutting off again. Tried a complete wipe/factory reset, to no avail. The battery stats also seems pretty random, going from ~70% to ~10% after turning off and on again.
I was reading here (http://support.t-mobile.com/docs/DOC-3152 (I don't own a T-mobile)), and it said this could be caused by a faulty battery. I have taken some photos of the battery here: http://imgur.com/a/FVyK0 ... To me it seems that it could be some visible swelling to the battery, but I don't have anything to compare it with. Any opinions??
And could a "faulty" battery be the cause to these problems (which to me seems to be software related)?
Which kernel are you running?

1. the battery is a little swollen at the middle
2. use a thin a paper to support the battery to ensure proper contact with the gold pins. this might resolve the random shutdown issue
Did you undervolt and/or underclock CPU and/or GPU? If yes, less aggressive values may help.
The crazy battery percentage can be solved by charging your phone to 100%, then clear battery stats and reset your fuel-gauge chip.
Tell me if this helped or not.

I don't think it's in any danger, it happens in old Nokia phones. I personally experienced this in my old n95.
It looks like as a result of too much heating, maybe

I have been checking out calibration, but there seems to be some diverging information. Should I charge it 100% while using it, or while off? Should I first drain the battery? And what do you mean by "reset fuel-gauge chip"?
As you can see, these battery stats don't seem right: http://imgur.com/Xnv6W.png

Wow that's the exact same thing happen to me.
The phone would shuts off by itself at random battery percentage. then I try to turn it back on, sometimes it just shuts right off.
At other time it would continue running with the battery slowly increasing. The graph of battery usage is really similar to yours. It would have those "valley of death" and then comes back alive as a short lived battery.
I am trying the battery reset by draining the battery until the phone really cannot be turned on (even the monitors), take off the battery for 2 minutes, charge it while it's off, unplug as soon as it reaches 100%, charge it till 100% again. I have read other thread saying that the taking out the battery part is at the end of the charging (100%), not at the beginning (0%). So I don't know which one is correct way to reset the battery.
Before update, I did not experience this prob, but only really hot cellphone while charging and fast draining battery even with 2x battery apps. Well, I had like 100+ apps, so it's understandable, but now, I have a very few apps (10+) but it's doing this magic trick to me.
Oh, and I noticed my battery is swollen and bulged at the middle too.
Anyone has an answer if it is a battery problem or just my mind going crazy?
I'm having exactly the same problem while running CM9. However i've noicted that the same thing happens while running stock as well. No overclocking or undervolting here.
My battery is swollen as yours is as well. Could it be a faulty battery?
Looks like it was the battery after all.
The service centre lady told me that my battery was FUBAR. Bought a new one and the problem seems to have disappeared.
She said it happens because of overcharging. Is that true? Thank god the battery was cheap.
It was the battery for sure. Ive been getting amazing battery life ever since I bought the new one. No more unexpected shut downs or any of the problems i was having.

Question Regarding Battery

Hi,
I bought a brand new "Chinese" battery of 2430 mAh because my stock battery was lasting nothing. My stock battery I must admit I did not take proper care of it, I pretty much charged it every time I had a chance, without waiting for it to be empty, so I thought the battery was just bad because I took bad care of it.
With this new battery, the first thing I did, was do a complete wipe out of my device. I cleaned the internal and external storage (formatted the internal storage and I got rid of all pictures and crap from the external sd) and I did a fresh install of the RootBox rom with fluxi kernel.
The problem is, battery drainage is still a huge issue with a fresh rom install.
Just leaving the phone sitting on my desk for an hour (not actually using it), drained the battery about 10%.
Could this be an electrical issue with my phone? Is this ROM related?
I've heard most people can make their phone with regular usage, last for at least 10 hours. Mine barely survives 4 hours with normal usage.
I look forward to any recommendations or tips on how to fix this problem.
Thank you!

There's no such thing as "regular usage" or "normal usage".
You may not believe this, but surprisingly you're not the first person to complain about battery life. If you bother to search (it's the very first rule of the site), you'll soon find what's recommended to others in order to track down what might be using up your power.
Good luck.

I know i'm not the first (nor I'll be the last one) complaining about battery life. I have tried hundreds of suggestions on how to improve battery life but I think my situation is a bit unique and different. We are talking about a brand new battery, with almost double the size as the original stock battery, a fresh rom install, and the battery draining 10% of its juice while sitting on a desk without even turning the phone on.
I would like to know if this is normal, if it could be an electrical issue, something wrong with the internals of the phone, or is it a software issue, etc.
Thanks!

If you're asking whether it's normal to try and justify yourself as having a unique problem, then yes, it seems it is. You're not unique, and it would be impossible for anyone to answer your question accurately with the minuscule amount of useful information you've given.
By the way, just because a battery claims to be 2430mAh, doesn't mean it is, and judging by my first few results on eBay searching for that ... well, yeah, right, I wouldn't expect it to be much more than 1400, if that.

I agree with this. You need to get a name brand battery, or an official samsung one to be sure about the stated and actual mah of the battery. I have two anker 1900mah batteries and I believe they are very close to that

[Troubleshoot]My Galaxy S2 is draining battery very fast!

Hello XDA,i bought my Samsung Galaxy S2,two months back, around end of november.Since then,i had a 1650 mAh battery and the XXLSJ JB leak.I thought it was normal to do that for a leaked firmware,so i switched to 4.0.4 (stock firmware, from england aka XEU).That didn't solve the problem either.I struggled for about 2 months, installing custom ROM's,Kernel's,verifying wakelocks on BBS,rooting,SetCPU,everything that i found out on google. My friends said it was the battery's fault.3 Days ago,i bought the 2000 mAh battery kit (wich comes with the 2000 mAh battery, and the expanded case).I've upgraded to 4.1.2 since it was released 7 days ago for Nordic Countries (NEE) and it still didn't fix it.A week ago,i've tried a market app called "Battery Calibration".It somewhat worked. Now,i'm on the 3rd reformat of the battery and it's still draining as before. What is happenning?May it be a hardware problem? It also gets hot on top, near the camera...
Maybe you have too many services running, maybe the reception in your area is poor, maybe you have wifi-bluetooth-gps constantly running, maybe your brighness is set the max and you play all day, maybe it's a hardware fault....
Post your battery screenshots will help alot. Post both screens plus display running time. BBS info will also help.

First of all.Everything i do,it's draining battery,wi-fi is always on when i'm at home.I chat very often when i'm at home on WhatsApp.Bluetooth and GPS is always off.Brightness is always set on Automatic and i don't play that often.I categorize my phone at about medium usage.
About BBS screenshots and Battery ones, look.
EDIT:
Right now,i'm using NeatROM Lite 4.3 with PhilZ Kernel.
That's your 2000 mAh battery?
Make it outta the box and claim warranty, go with the excuse that gets hot near the camera (which is scary) and tell them that you need a device that can hold at least 12 hours.

You don't get it.It always has been like that. The hot near the camera issue was present since 1650 mAh battery.Must say i bought the phone Second-Hand,no warranty,no nothing.
I think that ur battery is fake. Or you should restore our phone.

Now I get it, no warranty.
You need to nuke script so you can clean all previous ROMs leftovers.
60% chance it'll work.

It was on 2.3.5 when i bought it..I don't know if it had the same problem or not..My girlfriend has a Samsung SII and she gets a 1d life outta 1650 mAh battery.I don't get it why i get less since she has no Auto-Brightness and she constantly talks with me on Whatsapp and listens to music sometimes. She also plays games, and she still gets atleast 1d battery life.
I've heard this happening to phones after water damage
If both stock and extended batteries don't do it, plus the warm spot near the camera - I suspect it to be hardware fault.
Edit: try to sell it for parts (or...) and get another phone. This probably will require to chang the main PCB.

Oh god.Let's hope it's not.I don't want to spend more money on repairing the phone than using it,honestly.

Never trust previous owners, they all been here at xda.
You GF gets a day out of it because she's a girl, girls always get a day.
Nuke it up, you should be looking at 2 days with 7 hours of screen.
Hell, I get 4,5 in a day and a 1/2.

Same problem, bro :/
Gosh, I have had this problem too as long as I have had my phone and I'm so tired of this constant charging
I haven't nuked my phone like Gastonw was suggesting but now that I know there's such a thing I probably will. I'll post my battery stats too if anyone knows what to do if the nuke doesn't work. I hope I and everybody else that has this problem finally gets the answer.
Edit: Also I'm running the samsung 4.1 update, rooted and as you can see I almost haven't used the phone today and still only got 11-12 hours of battery lifetime.

Well, I have been thinking of buying a new battery (either the stock 1650mAh or the 2000mAh) but when I was running the stock samsung 4.0.4 firmware the most battery draining process was ''google services'' or something like that so I thought there was a problem with the software and so I didn't buy a new battery. I checked was anyone else having the same problem and it seemed to be a common bug. Some people where experiencing it on 2.3 and some on 4.0 but i didn't found an answer. When I heard that the 4.1 update was out I wished that it would fix the battery draining and kinda it did because no more the ''google services'' was draining all the battery but now it's the screen (which I know it should be) but even know that the software seems to be all good, battery still drains just as fast so just buying a new battery might fix my problem... and it hopefully does.

Battery life comes with good settings.
I got lucky there, 5.4 hours is a good number. Today I'm at 33% looking at 3.5 hours screen time. If I keep my screen on from now on i'll get to 4.4 hrs for sure. Now...good screen time right? Well...I AM gonna have to CHARGE it TODAY!
The thing is to catch the drainer "in the act" with betterbatterystats and once you've done that, you're off the hook.
This is the "where's the charger era", we all need to embrace that, so when we suddenly get 2 days outta 'em we can brag & giggle.
The day will come...where we will be able to charge our devices in 15 minutes and battery will last a week.....

Please perform a factor reset. I was also having the same issue, a factory reset made everything normal.
tip - backup imp data like contacts, messages and everything from your internal memory.

heavy usage
as i see it, you are a heavy user.
also the 4.1.2 official roms have a media scanner issue. you can search xda for the fix, but it willl just shorten the wakeup time.
best to avoid heat from the battery/phone. if it's heating up, it's probably working hard.
also check your network signal, sometimes when the signal is weak, the phone does extra work to search for a signal.
follow the previous post.. try to install a new fresh rom. make sure to wipe everything.
turn off all animations for 4.1.2
check your widgets so that they won't refresh. set it to manual refresh.
good luck!

Battery drainage and Phone Overheating

Hi there,
I've been having a problem for some time now with stock S3 ROM (4.1.2), and now that I've rooted my phone, I noticed it consists with both CM11 and Revolutionary S5. So it's probably the hardware, but if anyone could give me any kind of assistance or direction, I would be grateful.
Here is a recent shot of my battery life: http://imagebin.org/309592
As you can see, I nearly ran out of battery in 2 intervals of charge lasting about 4-5 hours.
If I use my phone moderately, only using like a few apps for 2 hours, it wouldn't last more than 5-6 hours.
If I only use it to respond to texts and get through the day, it lasts for 8-9 hours.
I've tried disabling all of the extra components for as long as I could, use power saving mode on the stock/Revolutionary S5 ROMs, Greenify etc.
Another problem I have is that the bottom part below the battery gets freakishly hot by just using a single app for 15 minutes or so. It's getting to the point where I'm uncomfortable holding it.
Is there any solution to my problems? Should I get a new battery? Or something else?
Get a new battery.

Thanks for your answer! But here's what I'm worried about, the battery doesn't really get hot (unless I'm misunderstanding something), but rather the part below it (I assume it's the SoC). So will that really fix my problems or is it some chip at fault here rather than the battery?
Also, would you recommend going with a Samsung official battery or an alternative?
Battery is the cheapest thing to try, get an official one.

What applications are using your battery the most?
Have you tried to flash a light ROM? (Bloatware Free)
Try to UC and UV the device and see if it keeps having the overheat problems.

Hi Saad_, here's my current battery status:
http://imagebin.org/309724
http://imagebin.org/309725
In the process of taking these screenshots and uploading them, my battery widget showed that my battery's temp went up to about 95-97F. Browsing the gallery and looking at some site on Firefox brings it up to over 100-105F.

The battery use is normal. As suggested above I recommend you to try it out with another battery since you said your battery's temp is reaching high limits. Try a new battery and check if the problem still exists.

What's a normal temp range for a battery? For reference.
Surprisingly enough, it feels cold/normal, the part below it is what's getting real hot.

I don't EXACTLY know what is a normal temperature on an S3 but my phone's battery is usually at 33 C (92 F) after web browsing and using Viber / Facebook. You need to try another battery in your phone to find out if the problem is with it or not.
