Where to buy an extra USB/Sync cable, and one that's longer that what came in the box?
Just about any MicroUSB cable will work. Available at a lot of places. Folks on XDA seem to like Monoprice.com. They have all manners of cables for very cheap (but still good quality), and a large selection of lengths.

Your mileage may vary though. I've found that cheaper USB cables don't charge my M8 like the cable that came with it.
Not sure why, but they just dont.

Hmm, interesting. I haven't actually tried to charge with a 3rd party cable yet, only used it to connect to PC for unlocking the bootloader and S-off (which worked fine). From past experience on other devices, its usually data that is the issue. Meaning charging will be fine, but data sync will not work (although it seems fairly uncommon, and the vast majority of 3rd party cables will work for both data and charging).
So it takes longer to charge using a 3rd party cable, but the OEM charger "block" or wall-wart?

I can't be 100% sure why it happened, but 2 cables from the same manufacturer did the same thing.
The odd thing was, they looked like they were charging. All indications were that they were connected and electrons flowed, but the battery level dropped while connected.

That is odd. I just tried what I had around, and a Samsung cable, and 3rd party one (branded Boxwave, but probably a pretty generic retractable type) both seem to work just fine for charging when connected to the HTC charger "block".
YMMV, indeed. To answer the OP, there isn't a good way of knowing whether a 3rd party cable will work or not without trying it. A genuine HTC cable is the sure bet, but since the OP wants something longer, he will have to look elsewhere. And 3rd party cables are much cheaper, of course.

Hey guys.
Any time I connect the phone to my computer via USB, the phone's touchscreen goes bonkers. It wont register my touch in the correct location, it jumps around and registers button-presses that I never pressed, or won't register a firm screen-press at all!
If the USB is unplugged, everything zips along accurately.
Any idea what might be causing this, and how I might fix it?
Just a quick background:
I rooted and installed the lag-fix. I encountered a problem with the lag-fix, restored factory settings, and root/lag-fixed again. The problem cropped up after the factory restore.

That's wacky. Since you've already done it once, I'd just restore again and see if that fixes it.
Also... not sure if this is a side-effect of the factory restore, but guess what suddenly appeared in my Widgets list??

Oops... launcherPro.
I've since reset the factory settings again; no luck. Still all wonky when USB is plugged in.
I'm considering taking it back to best buy and simply exchanging it for a different one, since I've only had it for a day. I would think that resetting everything to factory defaults would have fixed any software problem. Maybe this is a hardware problem that I just now noticed.
I have heard roomer, that if your usb is to low or to high of a voltage it will bork up the touch screen while plugged in.
it seems a common occurrence on many Android phones that use our style of USB port that if you use a 3rd party usb cable (i.e. one other than what shipped with the phone) as well as many 3rd party usb wall chargers that the touchscreen will either go bonkers or freeze up alltogether.
I've seen the exact same thing happen with my friends HTC MT3G and Motorola CliqXT using certain cables and chargers. Any cables/chargers that do this to my Vibrant do it to their phones too.
Interesting. I'm glad I read all this before I decided to take it back;
the laptop I had it plugged into is so fubar'd, that it would not surprise me to find that it has incorrect voltage...
This happens all the time on my Droid 2, Nexus and Fascinate. I just swipe very quickly and press lightly. However, no matter how many "tricks" I try it's still hard to flip through screens or open the correct app. Hardest task would be to navigate a website. Considering it happens on multiple Android devices and computers I never really put too much thought into it. Just figured it to be a Android bug.
Wow, never seen this. Now I do use the cable that came with my fascinate to plug into my computer, however car charger, wall chargers, and a USB charger (in my truck), I just use the cables from my Droid1. All my chargers are generics... Hmmm..
my htc touch pro 2 did the same thing when i used a gps car charger... screen went crazy

Ok. So for anyone wanting to know what's going on in the background to cause problems with your phone with crappy chargers....
I first discovered this with another touch screen player *cough*ipodTouch*cough*cough when I was trying to make a universal 4-port USB charging bay that would work with my sansa and my ...other player.
The specification that most device-manufacturing companies use nowadays for charging states that for a device to recognize a charger (and to start accepting a charge from the charger), the data pins must be shorted (connected together). This is what Sandisk, Apple, and several others are using. That is how I built my 4 port USB charger and it works flawlessly (with my sansa, ipod, galaxy, and Cowon S9).
NOW, somewhere floating around on the net are specs that state that some data must be sent/received through the USB's data cable (i believe it claims to need any 2.5V) which basically puts some resistors in to make a voltage divider.with the power and ground and data pins. THESE ARE BAD SPECS. They might have been legit in the past for some other device, but they are NOT what our phones need.
So some of the cheap, off-brand chargers are actually sending random messages to our Phones through the data pins (non-sense 2.5 volts). I haven't heard any reports of this damaging the phone or mp3 players yet, but whenever I plug mine into a charger and I lose the ability to control the screen, I get nervous b/c I know there is voltage on the data pins, and I don't know if it's the correct amount. So I get nervous
...does that make sense?
I had the Droid and the first time I saw that, it freaked me out. It seems to be an issue with touch screen android phones when they don't receive the correct voltage, whether because of a 3rd party cable, or a different computer voltage or something. I was using my blackberry mini usb charger and it would act like it had rabies. Nothing is wrong with your phone.
The charger included is plugged in next to my bed, and I'm using my Droid's USB cable in the computer without issues. That's very strange. I've never heard of this problem.

Sorry dude. It's not just android handsets, and it doesn't (seem) to have anything to do with the proper voltage. I've taken multimeters to the chargers. They are providing the proper ~4.5-5V range. It has to be the data pins.
Although, that's just the chargers I've had. Take a voltmeter to your usb chargers (don't touch the casing at the same time!) and see what their voltage is. But a low voltage just wouldn't charge your phone, and a high voltage would damage it.
Hi All,
I ended up purchasing the Rezond based on the previous feedback, but I'm still in the test-drive phase. I'm really enjoying the phone so far and so far I'm thinking "keep". The included headphones are really great also compared to my previous headphones! I'll be waiting at least another week before I decide to keep the phone and decide to put a better ROM on the phone.
Anyway, what's the deal with the charge cable? Standard Micro-USB fits fine, but what's up with the funky cable that came with the device? Will this cause any problems using a longer standard cable or will it cause the phone to charge slower? Does this cable need to be used for proper connection to a PC?
Custom cables always make me leery.
Sorry if this has been asked, searching for custom usb, charge cable, custom cable did not return an results.
Its actually not a custom cable. It is a MHL adapter. Lots of talk about it in the Accessories forum.
Basically one port for charging and HDMI out instead of two separate ports.
You can charge fine with a regular micro usb cable, I don't think it's slower but I've never timed it.
If you want to get more like the ones that came with the phone you can get the HTC Flyer cables in white here:
http://www.expansys-usa.com/htc-flyer-data-cable-dc-t500-extmicro-usb-12pin-white-209995/
I bought two of them since I like the secure feeling of the snap in.
I've never tried using a regular micro usb for data and don't have one within arm's reach and I'm really super comfy right now so I'm not going to get up but I don't see why it wouldn't work.
In the accessories forum try searching "mhl cable" and I think you'll come up with two threads about it if you want further info.
I am using a blackberry (micro USB) cable at work, and the OEM cable at home, I see no different in charge time or PC connectivity between the 2 cable.
I also use a blackberry AC adapter to charge the rezound when I am in a pinch.
HTH.
Thanks.
I figured any standard micro-usb cable will work. A MHL cable makes sense though, I've just never actually seen one and I'm not familiar with the form factor.
I'll be looking into this, thank you again.
"MHL" A Lot More Solid
The MHL cable feels a lot more solid than a micro USB. I have a couple micro usb that have gotten loose, and now just fall out of the phone if turned over, or if I hit a bump in the car. Thanks for finding a source to buy more of the MHL cables.
Also here slightly less expensive.

How long are those cables? Doesn't say on the page; unless I'm blind.
There is no such thing as an "MHL cable".
The format of the port and cable that come with the Rezound is called "EXTMicro USB".
"MHL" refers to a standard for connecting small electronics to HDTVs. It works with a regular Micro USB cable. Last time I checked (a couple of weeks ago) there are no MHL adapters that utilize EXTMicro USB connectors. Most of the ones that I've found use a regular Micro USB connector.
At this time, it's unclear exactly what the extra 7 pins in the connector in this phone are for. Other HTC phones have used them for analog audio and video output, but this doesn't appear to be supported by the rezound.
If you look at your rezound, you will see it only has the 5 pins. It does utilize the ExtMicro USB plug end/shape. If it truly had the ExtMico USB then while using the mhl adapter it could charge your phone via A/C while streaming. But it can't because the data pins are being used/ there are only 5 pins.

That's an excellent point about charging while using an MHL adapter. One could still force fast charging through software, such as what's available in Incredikernel/control, though.
On my rezound, I most definitely have contacts in the extra spots. The cable my phone came with, however, doesn't have any pins for them to contact.

So i tried to fkash something using odin about a week ago...and no matter what i tried, odin and the phone would connect, but the transfer would lock up. It wouldnt fail...it just would lock up.
After a while of futzing around, i tried a couple other cables until i came upon my stock Samsung cable, and VoilĂ . It worked.
How do we ensure that the cables we buy will work as the stock ones do? Does Samsung do something to alter their cables? Or are the cables i tried using altered by the manufacturer of the device they came with?
If you have some USB wisdom, please share it.
I'm no pro and don't know specifics, but from my experience and from what I've gathered from reading people talk about it, there are multiple types of USB cord types. The way it is wired apparently differs from cord to cord. Some Usb to Micro Usb will only allow you to charge, but not transfer data. My last phone was an HTC Touch Diamond, same deal. I used the stock one for a long time until a friend lent me a much longer and apparently high quality one. I don't know what the different types are called, or anything like that, you could probably google it though.
I can't remember the exact details, but IIRC there is some kind of intentional short between two of the leads on Samsung's Note USB cable. It's basically what tells the phone that it's ready to connect for data transfer. Not sure if it has to do with the new MTP mode or something else, but that is probably what caused your problem.
It's ironic that they universalized the micro-USB standard a few years ago specifically so there wouldn't be so much variation among chargers, but now there are multiple types of micro-usb cables and connectors that work with certain phones and not others. Oh well.. could be worse i guess

I rooted my note the other night using a microUSB that was sent with a Mophie Juice Pack Air for an iPhone. I don't think there's anything special between that cable and the one Samsung sent.
From what I've gathered on the forums here, the Samsung cable is just a regular microUSB. The difference is in the charger, which has the USB port's data pins shorted. This tells the phone to fast-charge if the current supplied is of sufficient amount. If you shorted the data wires or pins in the cable itself, that cable couldn't transfer any data - it would only be good for charging.
Length and shielding amount can be a factor in data transfer. Any chance the cables that didn't work were of greater length or not certified for USB 2.0? I haven't had issues with any of my cables.
I'm starting to think that the Issue isn't with standard cables, nor with the Sammy supplied one, but rather with the other twobi used. Specifically, it was a kindle microusb and a logitech microusb and supplied by the respective device makers.

Any cable that does this should be thrown in the trash. This should be something that's on the charger not the cable.
Anyway, I've used 3-4 various microUSB cables with my Note, no problems, except that I've found that adb randomly isn't working, even though USB otherwise is. Reboot fixes it. I haven't looked into it much.
After a good long while my X2's microSD port stopped working. So now I can't charge it, or connect it to my computer. I took it to a Verizon Wireless store and they confirmed that the port looks fine, but doesn't work. They had me a replacement shipped. I have the one they just sent me working fine, but I have to return my old one. The old one with the messed up port has Eclipse v2.3 on it, and I don't know how to get it back to a stock ROM without being able to connect it to my computer. It says in the shipping paperwork that they can charge me the full retail price for several reasons, including "software alterations." I can get to the stock bootloader of course, but bootstrap requires me to be plugged in to the AC charger. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

Have you tried wiggling the USB plug on your cable when it's connected? Sometimes, it might be really loose. I'm assuming you and Verizon tried, especially if you took it to Verizon and they confirmed it wasn't working.
I'm also assuming you've tried different cables just in case? I do know that if you don't use a cable that was made specifically for the X2, it might not have enough power to charge. I have noticed that with my RAZR (and my X2 before that), using USB cables and chargers that were NOT specific to the RAZR/X2 worked fine for a while and then they wouldn't work or worked sporadically. I would have to wiggle the cable to make it "register" but one slight movement would then cause the phone to say it was disconnected from the charger.
But, if I used the car charger or charging cable that came with my RAZR/X2, it worked fine.
I know some people have also tried bending in the outside part of the USB port more towards the inside so that it results in a tighter fit for the USB connector on your cable and that has worked. But, you definitely want to be careful if you're returning it.
Otherwise, it's probably something on the actual circuit board inside where the port has broken away from the logic board and is no longer registering to the phone when something is connected. At that point, I think you're done.
Thanks for the Ideas

Nope, the battery is fine. It's working well in replacement phone.
Most usb cables work to charge my phone, but won't form a data connection with my xt910. I do have ONE that will. I thought it might be the cables, but they form a connection with other devices. Thought I'd mention, it says a usb is connected regardless of which cable I use in ap fastboot.
What is going on????
Also, I just got the usb port replaced thinking this was the issue... i don't get it...

Yeah just take a razor and carve off some of the extra rubber around the plug.
