[Q] how to extract files without booting into the system - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all
I have an emergency matter,
I just updated my cynogenmod to the newest edition through the "in system" updater, then i reboot the phone, my phone stuck at the booting screen!!!! i didn't back up my files since its in the system update, i thought its relatively safe. I can just wipe everything and flash the mod, but I need all the files on the phone.
so is there any way i can explore the files on the phone like an SD directory so i can retrieve my files?
thank you

If they're Images/Video/Songs Then you can do a Restore to factory defaults and Wipe Cache from the recovery and boot it up. Though that'll get your applications removed. Try to do a wipe cache only ..

If you have a memory card (MicroSD), just get it and put it on ur PC

Have you looked into Aroma file manager? Works through recovery.

[Q] HELP - I can't use my phone

I'm running rooted ICS on my SGS2, have had no problem with it and have been running it for a while without any further modifications, however last night the battery went completely flat on me which hasn't happened before and after fully charging the phone, when I turn it back on it goes into a crash loop - That is no applications will start, and the screen is non responsive, then it closes TWLauncher and restarts the on screen apps again. For a few seconds the screen is responsive but whichever app I click on just says it has crashed. I can't even get it to display the Power off/reboot menu. After several cycles of this the phone completely resets.
I've removed the battery and attempted to get it into CWM but the screen just goes black when it should show CWM and then restarts after a few seconds.
Can someone please help me as I can't use my phone
I've managed to get into CWM - Backed up and then cleared cache & dalvik cache.
It went through it's "Android is upgrading" process and came up looking hopeful (Loaded a few extra bits) but then reset and is doing the exact same thing again
Any further ideas?
Factory wipe, if that fails, flash your stock ROM from odin assuming you can get onto download mode?

I was hoping that would be a plan F. I wanted to try plans B>E first if possible.
Edit: Is it possible to backup with CWM the "SD Card" section as I have no other way of backing up it's contents and would like to keep them (Photo's etc.).

wipe data, cache and dalvik cache and reboot. wiping data will not delete contents of ur sdcard.if that doesn't help copy rom files into external card and flash rom from external card by full wipe.
If your CWM recovery support usb mass storage mode, copy ur rom flashable zip into /sdcard, wipe data, wipe cache, then install zip. You should at least able to boot successfully, though all your contact, sms, apps will be gone.

Help - My S2 keeps on rebooting after some update yesterday

Since yesterday my phone keeps on rebooting, i dont remember exactly but there was some update and now my phone just keeps on rebooting.
It would start with the Samsung Logo, go on to load android, and finally land at the pattern lock.
Then after 5 to 10 seconds it would just reboot without any message or error.
I tried to uninstall a few softwares like 'skype' , 'swype keyboard' , etc but no use.
What I have noticed is the phone gets very hot , it wasn't that hot before.
I tried changing the battery with another phone, switching off wifi, switching off packet data, uninstall anything I can find which is not needed, but still no use.
I have installed cyanogenmod in it and the phone is also rooted (I did both of these before a year)
Any one else having this issue ?
Recovery Mode and download mode both work fine. (The phone doesn't get restarted in these modes)
If nothing would work I have to factory reset the phone from the recovery mode. (Which also I dont know how to do)
I have some very important images in my gallery (in sdcard most probably) which I desperately need. (i am unsure if factory reset from recovery mode would retain the photos or they would be deleted)
Any guidance please.
Thanks.
You can pull those images from your sdcard with adb when you're in recovery mode.

I did the adb part and connected my phone but I cant find my sdcard, it seems as it is not mounted.
/mnt/ doesnt exist
/sdcard and /sdcard1 are empty
I tried a lot to navigate and find the sdcard but still I cant find it,
Can someone please guide me how to find and mount the sdcard to copy the images.
Then I can factory reset the phone from recovery mode.
Thanks
I don't know. What are all the folders? Use ls command in adb shell.

If I select factory reset from the recovery mode, will it clear my sdcard contents as well.
I did factory reset once from within android and it retained my sdcard as it is so will be it be the same in recovery mode also ?
Any one have any experience in this please share.
I have installed cyanogenmod recovery.
Thanks

updating partition details

Im trying to flash to the slick2vfinal rom and i keep getting "updating partition details" then it fails immediately...
im clearing everything I can think of without clearing my SD card
I originally had the rom in the wrong format for the phone to read so I change it to .zip file and now I can at least see the rom, but I still get "failed" when updating the partition details?
update: i tried to change the way I select the rom in the bootloader and TWRP , i got rid of the slick2vfinal folder and added just the .zip file and now its not even opening
am I supposed to "wipe system, this will wipe your rom"
any ideas?
Turn out I had a bad install. Downloaded a different Rom and it worked spot on,however I didn't like it so I flashed back to my nandroid backup

He can try and access the com.android.providers.contacts folder somewhere in /data/user or data/data folder by using recovery based aroma file manager(you might need to flash a cwm recovery), com.android.providers.contacts folder contains the database for your contacts, most probably backing this up and after reseting you can replace this to get your contact's back, if you want you can try to read the contacts.db using a database application like Sqlite.

[Q] Wondering if i can do this

I have a Verizon droid RAZR that the screen has cracked in many places. I have bought a new phone and have no plans for ever using this as a phone. What I would like to do is install a ROM over the stock one, not dual boot both. I was also wanting to get rid of all of the phone stuff, no Verizon apps, no SMS, and no phone logs. I would use this like a tablet and would love to save as much space as possible. I don't need the moto docks (I don't have one). Basicly strip this thing down to just bare necessities. Is it even possible to do this? If so is there a ROM that gets great battery life? Thanks for reading my question.

You can flash ROM on your stock slot and then delete the useless apks.
Try any AOSP ROM. It should work fine.
Tapatalk with RAZR HD
I have downloaded tonyt's aokp rom. I have extracted the rom to its own folder and have looked at the apps in the app folder. System>app. I am not sure which of these I can get rid of. I would like to get ride of anything that is VZW or phone related just keeping maybe the contacts. I dont know what apps should be gotten rid of with out breaking the rom. Sorry I'm a noob. All I have done was flash a few roms, never tried to remove apks before. Do I need a cellphone broadcast for location services like maps and for the in browser location? I have safestrap installed. It will not let me flash a rom over stock rom. I am trying to find a way to get cwm or twrp installed instead.
ok bricked my phone. Device would restart and get the red moto logo, then nothing, blank black screen. rebooted the phone and could not get to safestrap. Used Matt's utility to install jb and reroot phone.
The procedure that I used to install the rom on my stock image is as follows:
1. copied rom zip to micro sd card
2. booted to safestrap
3. wiped cache, delvic, and system
4. installed rom zip through safestrap
5. no errors got success
6. reboot got nothing
I think anything could still happen even if SafeStrap didnt indicate any error after installation, that's why backup is important, also this ;

Notice 2 - MAKE SURE you see "Update partition detail...." in SafeStrap log console before you press "Reboot System" or you will not get boot!

You will need to do a complete wipe when flashing a new ROM, including /data.
Use latest SS. And make sure the ROM is compatible with the latest SS.

How do I format the internal storage? I have about 3 roms I have running and I have games and apps that I have uninstalled that left behind folders in root folders and some apps that did not get uninstalled also left behind some data. I tried doing a factory reset and also tried using safestrap to wipe internal but it fails. I made a folder in my system folder and put 2 pics in it then factory reset, wiped system data, and checked every box in the advance wipe options and that folder (along with the others) are still there.

Every slot has its own /data partition.
After you activate a slot, wipe /data along with system and cache.
That is called full wipe. It will remove all your apps, files and user settings will be deleted.
Then flash your desired ROM.
