Thanks to everyone in the Forum. I have had my Z Ultra for 6 months, and appreciate all of the help and support. I am selling my Xperia Z Ultra on Swappa (along with some Incipio cases and a PC12 power cover). It's a terrific phone, and I enjoyed it very much.
If anyone is interested in a trade (Note 3?), please give me a ring on Swappa.
Oh, you'll regret this!
I can't stop playing with my ZU. Won't sell it until Z2 Ultra is out, or similar.

It's a hard knox life! Just check out the Note 3's (international version) original dev section. I can't see one custom ROM. Only kernels and misc tools. Oh, the AT&T and Verizon version of the Galaxy S5? There's currently a $12,362.00 bounty for root. ROOT.
How about the international version of the S5? Same story as the Note 3. Custom kernels, but no custom ROMs. You can all thank Knox for that, and that's why i'm never ever touching a Samsung again.
But you know... enjoy that Note 3, OP
Edit: Some strange font change going on here... meh.. i'll let it be.

Yeah, we don't have the biggest or even a particular active dev community here, but we do actually have a fair share of custom ROMs. The only thing we're "missing" is a lot of custom kernels, but that's understandable since kernel devs aren't exactly as common as ROM devs.

We have most of the main ROMs now, and I'm working on another (maybe 2 if I can find the time, and make my i7 laptop not feel like a netbook). Kernels are in short supply and I'm no C programer to do much other than small patches.
I do have to ask if the ZU users really do want dev work though, the last 3 or so threads that have asked for testers have all died in a hole...

Looks like the Ultra's battery quality is good. I've had mine since september last year, and i still get 6-7 hours of screentime (depending on usage), and that's what i got 6 months ago. I hope the quality is as good as HTCs batteries, because i have an old Desire HD that's 3 years old and the original battery is still kicking and lasting about a day (depending on usage).

Since ZU battery is NOT removable, I really hope the battery can take at least 2000 charges before losing 15% capacity.
3 charge per day on extreme usage * 365 days * 2 years = around 2000 charges.

The battery may last better if charged slower (less heat) so i would do the over night ones via usb.
Ps you can change the battery quite easily, and just need the battery, a glue/seal set, a suction cup and a hair drier

^This.
I just switched from T-Mobile & the HTC Sensation 4G a couple weeks after it came out (June 15th, 2011). It took about six months for development to really take off, and only recently (as in, the last few months - over a year since release) has CyanogenMod had stable releases of CM9. Nightlies for CM10 only came out last month.
Admittedly, Samsung devices have been getting much more attention that HTC devices from developers due to their popularity, but it'll still take time for our brand new device (it was released November 29th, recall) to get into enough developer's hands to start having lots of options. I think we can be confident that this will happen. Probably much quicker than any HTC device ever did.
In the meantime, we seem to be in much better shape than, say, the T-Mobile LG G2X (remember that device?). The stock software with that device - which was pretty much top-of-the-line when it was released - was nearly crippling. We have the best hardware out there and at worst adequate (I'd say more than adequate) software to tide us over until ROM developers unleash their magic.
I recommend patience - and maybe some encouragement to your favorite developer (in the form of financial support, that is - no ETA requests)!
With an unlocked bootloader I thought we would have alot more roms by now than what we do.....maybe im wrong. Im not criticizing anyone or any developer's. Just thought there would be a wider variety by now. Thoughts???
Sent from my most awesome phone EVER!!!!
For one, the phone has only been out for a month and a half for Verizon. I'm not familiar development processes are from carrier versions but I'd imagine you have to specially make a rom based on the device you're using it on. Although, with it being such a popular device around the world that it's only a matter of time before more developers move over to the CDMA version.
Does Verizon and Sprint use the same version of the phone?
yup
thats how all newer phones start out... was same way for my galaxy nexus when it came out...
I think considering the late year release date (devs enjoy the holidays too) plus the additional bootloader lockdown issue that development is coming along nicely. We have 2 great roms that are daily drivers now and from what I see on the other threads another slew in alpha now. This is a flagship phone for sure, which I think makes for a bright future.

It hasn't been the case with any of my Motorola phones even with a locked bootloader. There was always more roms within about 3 days of getting cwm via bootstrap, than there has been on this device. I think a big reason is that not many people have the Verizon variant. I didn't get a GNex, but I did look at the development after a few weeks when I was still considering it, and there was a lot of roms, and mods.
It takes time for all devices. For those of us in Japan using the Japanese Galaxy Note 2, we have only just had root this week! :good:
(Thanks for the help of a few here at XDA). So in time I'm sure more ROMS will be available for the Verizon Note 2 also.

We are getting a lot more devices, which is probably diluting how many users are running each device. My first Android phone was the Droid X, and it had a ton of development at the beginning and lasted for about 7-8 months before it started to slow down. My other devices had a lot of development right away (but not as much as the X) but start to slow down after just 3 months or so.
Honestly with how awesome this device is, stock. The desire for mods is probably reduced significantly..
I've owned a Samsung captivate and droid x2. This device is so smooth and fluid I am willing to pay postpaid plan prices to have it.. (Was using page plus 55$/month with dx20

The roms developed already are great but there just doesn't seem to be the variety as on Sprint...In my opinion only...Why?

Huh.
Sprint released in October.
Sprint didn't have a locked bootloader.
Sprint has 12334234123 roms that are mostly the same with different kitchen devs running them (this is the main reason).
The reason I think we aren't seeing as much activity is because:
1. People are still recovering from the holiday season and the Note II released during the holiday season.
2. There are some of us that simply don't have time, and have no desire to release a zip rom that is more of the same. Like for me, I only have time to do mods and advise others.
3. Verizon has scared off a lot of talent.
So if anyone has a problem with this, I recommend they jump ship and change to Sprint. Personally, I feel that those who complain about this should suck it up and learn how to do this stuff. They can then proactively help fix the problem.
I think there is enough ROMs

Wow, observations don't necessarily equate to complaining. People are soo sensitive these days. The truth is, if you are developing this stuff, I couldn't respect you more for doing it. It is something I don't have the knowledge to do. But that doesn't mean that someone who is new to Verizon and used to flashing roms weekly can't question why there is a difference in the participation between the two. You are correct, there are two or three base roms and many variations of them but there "appears" to be more.
I think answer # 3 you gave is what I was expecting to hear and with all the limitations Verizon puts on the phones it doesn't surprise.
So personally I feel....if you don't care to ask why the question is being asked...dont' answer it either...with all due respect.
Keep in mind Vzw took their merry time releasing this phone that those that had to have it first went to other carriers.

Hey Guys, My dad has an S3 that’s on its last legs so he was looking to pick up an S5. His friends at work were showing him the heart rate sensor and fingerprint scanner and he became interested. Usually he prefers to lag behind with the technology for a while so I was shocked when he said he wanted to upgrade! Anyway was wondering are there any issues I should be looking out for since I’m trying to purchase one for him. I was looking on Swappa and saw some good ones.
Usually with Samsung phones I debloat and root but with KNOX I don’t know how things are round here right now. Stock phones are stable enough? Wouldn’t want any lag lol. Anyway just wanted to get some opinions and see how you guys like the phone. Thanks, appreciate all feedback.

But to answer your question, yeah, it's a pretty great phone. No real complaints except for the plastic back. It creaks a lot after 6 months of use. And CM11 just became official today, so you have that as well if he doesn't like TW. It doesn't lag really, but it isn't as fast as the iPhone or M8.
Thanks!

I love the S5 although I did not come from the S3.
I came from the HTC One X and this phone's battery life is just amazing compared to the One X. It really feels like a powerful, premium device.
I doubt you'd be disappointed in buying the S5. It is great.
Honestly, I love everything about this phone. It seems like an all around great phone with a great look and a very attractive price tag. The only thing that's putting me off is the fact that it's still stuck on 4.3 and with L coming out in the coming months, it's going to be two generations behind. Did the lack of Kitkat ever bother you guys who already have the phone? Do you think you'll regret not having Lollipop?
Originally I didn't care about anything but the battery life, which is still amazing (2-3 days of usage for me.) I thought root would definitely be an issue, since it seems approximately 15 people in the whole world have this phone (and they're all on this forum), but we still got root.
As with the OS updates, I knew the chances would be slim but hey, Huawei just gave out 15 Mate2's to ROM developers. Maybe we'll be getting ports soon! They even said it themselves.
Yeah me too, the only thing I care about is the battery. As for being stuck on JB I really don't care, I mean it works perfect. I'm sure we will get some Roms going soon enough.

I am in the final stages of coming out with a apk called PERMA root. It will root while also giving you the option to unlock bootloader. I am testing on two more devices before release. I want to leave nobody unhappy. Therefore any device you may have will work. As new phones are introduced it will only take a couple days to activate from my end. Please be patient because as you already know this is some hard work and long hour testing.
Tested devices: (list includes all carriers) (multiple devices in each listed brand tested to include s4 and s5) Lg, Samsumg, htc, and currently testing last of others. Thanks for the patience.

He was claiming root and bootloader unlock. But instead of getting everyone riled up he probably should have made it a covert job and then "Bam" here you go. Kinda like when the Rezound got s-off. But the thread got way out of control and it's locked now until he can prove he has something substantial. If you'd like to check it out see the first post in this thread and go to original post quote.

I feel the same way about my galaxy bloat 3. First and formost i need a phone that works as a phone. This phone has the worst service and software out of any phone i've owned. As far as the sortware goes i thought i would be able to fix it with cm11 but thanks to verizon and me not doing my home work a head of time i'm stuck with the ****tiest phone i've ever owned. I can't wait for july to replace it with a motorola product.
I must be getting old. I don't see a problem with the stock note 3 and the bloat. Yeah the signal could be better but that is on Samsung more than Verizon. And yes Verizon could shorten the approval process for updates and Samsung could drop tw and put out updates in line with the nexus line as all manufactures should the ui should be a app on the app store and be little more than a launcher for people to choose to use if they want.
Not going to happen. If your on big red you likely don't have a choice or it is the best service in your area or your grandfathered into unlimited. The Samsung phones were the only ones with 2 features I am unable to give up battery that is removable and sd card.

If this phone doesn't end up with Lollipop that's rootable or an unlocked bootloader before February, I'm throwing mine at my Verizon Rep's face and picking up a Note 4. We bought Note 3's for only two reasons. The first reason was that the other Note's were easy to root and flash to CM and the second reason was because of the S-Pen. At this point I would take a loss on the S-Pen functionality just to be rid of all of the Samsung Bloat on my phones.
Wow. sounds like you all should be buying an international variant. trashing you phone or going to a N4 with a locked bootloader is not going to solve your problem. I am pleased with my Rooted N3 and have no issues and will stay with Samsung for a while. Root is nice but it's not going to cause me to put my phone in the trash, there are other things in life that are far more important
Yeah way to stick it to Samsung by throwing out last quarters model and buying the brand new one.
I see both sides, though we didn't have ten or fifteen roms to flash, this phone was not a waste at all. It's a solid phone for my use. But flashing roms has become a hobby and I don't like not doing that either. So even though most of the developers are going to the Nexus. I just don't like having no SD or removable battery either. And how are they handling any replacements for a phone currently not carried by Big Red? May not be the place for me to ask that but I'm curious.
You might want to check out the Note 4 forum for scripts that can disable a ton of the bloatware without root. I am still rocking rooted MJE so I can't test it with kitkat. It supposedly will run on most android phones. Just wanted to mention a potential solution until root achieved.

So locked note 3 to a locked down note 4 when you are stuck with the options of motorola or sony for unlockable phones that are on verizon.
IF you really have to have CM 12 you are going to have to either make sure the phone you get at that time has an unlockable bl or is a nexus.
And as for the note 4 it is only a slight upgrade over the note 3 and both will someday get lollipop note 4 sooner than the note 3...
