[Q] Is it necessary to flash ROW ROM over a Chinese one? - Lenovo P780

Starting this thread to answer a very simple question.
I find some answers scattered through responses in a lot of other threads, but all the information is too spread out to be useful, so I'm trying to get all that info in a single thread.
Most of us will get their P780 through a Chinese website. Most of them will have an English interface probably, but are still the Chinese models.
The main difference is explained elsewhere, so not going into that. Just wondering, I'm living in Europe, but temporarily in Australia.
I have an Australian SIM1, and my European SIM2. Works just fine. Full reception on SIM2 all the time, SIM1 is kind of unstable, going from full reception to almost nothing and back when on 3G. But apart from that, fast data transfer.
In most countries, 3G on 900Mhz is not that popular anyways.
So, is there any reason to flash an ROW rom to a Chinese phone ?
- 3G 900Mhz band not available on Chinese models : does the ROW change that ? Or can you change it by flashing a different modem image or can't you enable 3G 900Mhz at all on them?
- custom ROM support : but so far I haven't seen a ROM interesting enough to do this. Most of us will want the latest android version, which is only VIBE 1.5 on Chinese ones anyways at this moment. SLX and Life look ok, but I don't see much difference with the VIBE roms (UI wise).
- English interface : you can switch the Chinese models to English without too many issues (some text still in Chinese, but not too annoying)
Do Chinese and ROW models have the same hardware, or are there differences ?
On Russian forums, people try to flash ROW to open up the 3G 900Mhz band, but so far, I couldn't find conclusive information that this actually works.
Taking it even further, is there any reason to go for a ROW(usually more expensive) model instead of a Chinese model ?
And perhaps the most important question of all : can you actually flash a ROW ROM on a Chinese model ?
Most answers I find elsewhere say it should work. But my phone gets stuck and won't even start when I do so. Perhaps I'm doing something wrong, perhaps because it's just not possible.
Update : In recent other posts, users successfully flashed a ROW on a Chinese model, so I'm assuming that is possible.
I invite you all to provide some answers or feedback, because when I was looking into buying this phone, that was my most important question

I have ROW Phone bough and i commandet P780 Chinese version witch is more cheap then my row bought in my country. Half a price. I will not pay shipment because someone i know will bring it from there. I barrely wait to compare and i will tell you all about it.

So some follow up on my testing:
Remember : I'm working on a P780 4Gb Chinese with production date 15/03/14
This means I have to use a different preloader file than the ones included in all roms (at this moment). I that is not done, the phone will not boot (see my other thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-p780/help/p780-bricked-flashing-wrong-rom-doesnt-t2749683).
I succesfully installed following ROMS :
- P780_S135_130917_rooted_twrp_gapps : standard Chinese rom, works well, some chinese, but does the job
- VIBEUI_V1.5_1419_5_DEV_P780_rooted_twrp_gapps : KitKat rom, worked very nice but had a huge problem with battery drain. Location services would hang an eat up to 15%/hour. Tried many things, and in the end, I got it more or less stable, but no location services (Google Now, Maps, weather,...). Too many problems with battery performance, so uninstalled
- P780_ROW_S124_140403_rooted_twrp_gapps + SLXROM_v24a-Lenovo_P780 : this combo gave me the purest Android system so far. Good old Android menus and behavior, good battery life, good everything. However, I had a major problem : every reboot, I would get a problem with SIM1 or SIM2 that did not come up. No problem, I could flash a modem like V52 Modem_S920 and the problem would be gone when the phone started up again...only to return on a next reboot. I liked the rom a lot, but that was just not workable.
- P780_ROW_S124_140403_rooted_twrp_gapps : The ROW stock rom, and I must say, I'm liking it. Works well, good battery, and in all honesty I kind of like the Lenovo shell. Nice launcher, nice behavior. I installed XPosed and GravityBox to update some things I didn't like without problems. Oh and the biggest surprise of all : in my SIM1, I see that WCDMA-GSM-900, aka 3G 900Mhz, is enabled, but I'm in a 2100Mhz only area, so I don't know if this is just there but not actually working... Furthermore, I liked the Power and security app from the VIBE 1.5 ROM, so I opened the img file, and extracted the apks, and installed them on this ROM, and it actually works nice without issues.
So for now, the last rom (ROW), gives me a non-Chinese, nice rom that has the 900MHz band enabled (will try to test soon).

Thanks alot for sharing this information with us. Now: can you tell us what are the 2 app original names in system.img?

Found them in the priv-app folder, not app folder (somewhere in system.img, forgot where exactly ?): LenovoPower.apk and LenovoSafeCenter.apk
Lots of other interesting stuff in that folder I must say ?
The power app in vibe 1.5 shows me more accurate timings and has a useful interface to see processes that consume power, especially the keep awake, aka wakelocks, and I like the privacy settings on the security app.but this one seems to crash sometimes because of conflict with the security app of current rom,but still...

Please do backup via spflash tool, i found somewhere on xda, spflash tool can pull a backup file from your rom what you using now. So if something happens you wouldn't worry. You have exactly right rom that always running on your phone.
Do research, 1st of all try flash all file and if ended with bootloop, you can try flash again and avoid to flash BL, preloader, sometimes nvram file.
If you have the right backup file, mediatek is nearly unbrickable, even imei can be write permanently without open your mainboard.

Great tutorial on the, well mainly SPFT, thanks!
Problem I had with CWM (and apparently you have to have the right version for Chinese or ROW), is that although it did boot into recovery, I'd get random errors about /system or /data or whatever else could not mount. It would give errors when trying to take a backup, and it just didn't feel reliable.
TWRP on the other hand, works great, no issues (although it says that it needs to fix root permission whenever I exit it, but no problems).
After my experience with a wrong flash, I do believe the MT devices are almost unbrickable, as long as you have the right combination of files to flash onto it.
After trying like 7 ROMS, I decided to stick with the ROW stock on my Chinese model. Great battery, stable, the storage division is a bit small, I'm running out of internal storage although I have plenty left in built-in storage, but my apps don't want to install there, neither can I move them.
Most important indeed is : BACKUP first

Update on my current P780_ROW_S124_140403_rooted_twrp_gapps ROM :
Although it shows 900Mhz band active, the 3G connection was pretty unstable. It works well for 1 second, then goes to nothing, then back to working well.
So I decided to flash the V52 Modem_S920.
Downside : no 900Mhz (but is it still used in a lot of countries ?)
Upside : 3G connection a lot better and stable. Browsing the internet is fast.
Where I would see a download speed of 25Kb/s to 500b/s to 200b/s it now stays well above 10Kb/s, with speeds well above that most of the time(up to 250Kb/s)
Current test done in Jakarta (with local SIM). Will test again in other countries.

[Q] Available roms for the Cube U39GT?

I am planning to buy one of these tablets to tinker with. After some searching, I found the following rom alternatives:
http://www.arctablet.com/blog/forum...-firmware-version-1-04-test-version-20130723/
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/91121-tempestu39gt-roms-v0001/
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/89434-custom-firmware-from-4pda-based-on-stock-104/
Do you know of any other worthwhile rom to try out, or are these three all that's available?
Anyone?

thanks for sharing, gonna try the TempestU39GT
There's also 1.05 multiwindow rom that some say is better than stock 1.04, download is here :
rom
Do not buy the Cube U39GT-3G version of this tablet, I ordered one from http://www.cube-tablet.com and it came with a wrong IMEI number. I cannot use any SIM data card because of this with this tablet.
I bought the Wifi version, so I am not in danger. Thanks for the warning though, it certainly speaks of extremely crappy QA.
racht: anytime, and thank you for the link to 1.5.
It seems like another rom might be on the works:
http://www.freaktab.com/showthread.php?8204-Are-there-any-worthwhile-roms-for-the-Cube-U39GT
Apparently it will be based on stock 1.04 instead of 1.05, but if it comes to completion it might be worth it to try it out.

ROM has been uploaded yesterday but the dev doesn't own a U39GT. So anyone willing to test can do it now
I can't believe that slipped by me. Thanks for the heads-up. :good:
http://www.arctablet.com/blog/forum...2-custom-root-firmware-version-1-06-20131123/
This looks promising as well with 1.06 Cube firmware update and AOSP launcher.
New original Cube firmware 1.06 is downloadabl from official cube site.
http://www.51cube.com/ch/DownShow.asp?ID=205
I can recommend Google for translating the chinese, you can download the ROM from baidu which could take a few hours.
Awesome, thanks for the heads-up.
They require registration to access the downloads? Dammit, I refuse to create an account just to go and download something. Do you have an account there, locutus2000? If so, would you be willing to mirror it somewhere?
I was able to fix the IMEI issue, so it is safe to buy, again. The support from the vendor was not helpful, the wrong IMEI number is not only wrong for me but for all of the sold models. They all have 111111111111111 as IMEI number, no big deal with the MTK Droid Tools I was able to load a new IMEI, that was generated from an internet site. It works with the SIM cards now.
Important to know: the Cube 9 Talk with the 3G SIM card uses MediaTek MTK8389T CPU whereas the Cube 9 without the SIM card 3G feature uses a RockChip RK3188 CPU. The ROMs are not interchangeable.
So whatever issues you may have, it may be a completely different story for the person that owns the other chipset. Strange enough that Cube built two similar products with completely different hardware.
The Cube U39GT 3G ROM Version 1.03 for the 3G version can be found here:
http://www.51cube.com/ch/DownShow.asp?ID=206
If you have donwloaded and unpacked the firmware, you may end up with chinese folder names. Flash tool did not accept the scatter file when I tried to select it using these folder names.
To resolve this: Simply create a new folder name and copy/paste the ROM of the Cube to the new folder, the update should then work with the Flashtool. I have used Version 3.1328.0.183. The update takes a while so be patient. Worked with mine.

ROMs in the Wild - help understanding carrier codes

If you have a (low volume) device that was sold all over the world with different firmware you are particularly interested in all available stock firmwares and even hacked firmwares.
This is true in my case: MediaTek MT6575 + Lenovo A2107A.
What is cool... The power of Google and value of your fingerprint or ro.build.display.id and possibly other fields. With this information, Google found 2 or 3 very nice sources that gather hardware profiles.
http://gfxbench.com/device.jsp?D=Lenovo+IdeaTab+A2107A-H&testgroup=system
http://usbhost.chainfire.eu/?search=A2107
http://www.srsroot.com/supported
Pretty cool. I now am quite certain the A2107A-F never had 4.0.4, just 4.0.3. Weird that this firmware seems to have run on SGH-t989 and GT-I9300 in just a few cases. OTG has never been successful on any of those firmwares? And I now know of more carriers that sold Lenovo A2107A-H with firmware specific for their "needs."
Check these fingerprints out:
Lenovo/A2107A-H/A2107A-H:4.0.4/IMM76D/A2107A_A404_400_001_121226_LAS:user/release-keys
Lenovo/A2107A-H/A2107A-H:4.0.4/IMM76D/A2107A_A404_301_006_130506_MOV:user/release-keys
Lenovo/SmartTabII7/SmartTabII7:4.0.4/IMM76D/A2107A_107_055_130124_VODA:user/release-keys
Lenovo/A2107A-H/A2107A-H:4.0.4/IMM76D/A2107A_A404_000_033_121011_ATT:user/release-keys

I know what ATT is... it's US based AT&T. I know what VODA is... it's Vodafone.
Can anyone tell me what these carriers are: LAS MOV ?
Update:
For a round-a-bout reason I think MOV is Movistar Peru.
many many many ROMs , But , from where we can download it to try ?
i searched for it using Google , but with no result , and for the strange carriers , i try to find them roms to know what is it , but i found it in Chinese sites and you must have a paid membership with them to download .
i tried this :
A2107A-H_LeWa_MAK
and as i told you it is great except for the Chinese characters which i can not delete ,
i am looking for this :
A2107A-H_by_Velial39
but i never find it .

Yes, I'm sure they are quite hard to find -- but at least we know they are out there. What a strange device we have, sam_pon -- so many custom models! I would pay a bounty to be able to test all it's stock roms. At least companies like Acer have "Service ROMs" for /sdcard/update.zip type installs. Lenovo is so frustrating, few OTAs only no downloads.

If you decide to flash the phone, be careful. The rule is, if it's not broke, don't try to fix it
However, in case you still decide to go for it :
Watch out when you're using SP Flash on a recent model, it might (almost) brick your phone.
In addition to the thread mentioned above, also read this http://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-p780/help/p780-bricked-flashing-wrong-rom-doesnt-t2749683
This phone is quite nice, and flashing different ROMs is easy if you know what you're doing. Please read as much info on this forum from other users first if you're not experienced in doing these things.
One point of attention is the modem in the phone. It's a bit problematic. Flashing a new rom might knock out your second sim card or give you bad reception.
Please refer to http://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-p780/help/test-radios-4-row-t2761568 for tips.
thanks guys thats great, i have managed to put English cmw im just looking to be able to flash a new rom on it through cmw as all my computers run ubuntu or other linux.
any links would be great, thanks

Hi. You need to do this:
1. go to Contacts - press menu button - fum menu press more features and settings - go to more contacts and feature - merge duplicate contacts.
2. After that you must do one thing that is hard iff you have to many contacts: edit contacts and put your country prefix in front of all contacts.
Tell me if this helped you.
Hi, thanks for reply. I had an update and its sorted it thanks.
Still want to know how to flash rom from recovery (without pc) cheers
Sent from my Lenovo P780 using XDA Free mobile app
I hear you, also on Ubuntu, and although the latest version of SP Flash is supposed to work on Linux, didn't figure out how that would work, I guess it's command line messing.
So I got a Windows PC from somebody, sorry but that's the easiest way.
Unfortunately, P780 (and all MTK devices), are easy to flash so everyone is using that method.
Installing from recovery is not that popular, but there are exceptions.
Most of the time, you start out from a stock version, which you have now and backup, backup, backup that one. You'll probably need it if you want to install another ROM.
As far as I have learnt, there are a couple of ROMs you can install given that you have a stock ROM already running.
Either you stay on this forum, and you can try Life or Vibe, or you go to www.needrom.com/phone-roms/lenovo/serial-p/p780/ . Most ROMs there are recovery installable, and so suitable for your situation. So far, had no problems using ROW base with one of these.
vibeui.com (in Chinese, but apparently the 'official' Lenovo daughter site), offers Vibe 1.0 and 1.5 as recovery installable.
I've installed and played around with SLX, Vibe 1.0 and Vibe 1.5 (KitKat), all installable from recovery.
Although I tried to stay with Vibe 1.5 (because KitKat), I reverted back, mainly because:
- signal was worse than other ROMs
- I have a magnetic case working fine on stock but not at all on Vibe 1.5
- Battery drain problems, especially because of location services
- Location services not working for applications
- All in all, just a bit too buggy
SLX was the most pure Android I installed, but I missed the Lenovo specific additions.
In all honesty, I like the stock ROM after all, the Lenovo apps ans launcher, and settings are actually pretty good. I in fact like the Chinese stock rom more than the ROW (more settings, security app has more options,...), but a lot of stuff is Chinese, so no
One tip : on a stock version, install Xposed and the Gravitybox module, it's almost as good as installing another ROM. So much tweaking and modding, that I can customize whatever I want.

Flashing MODEM_419D_V.00050. How to backup the old one first?

So, I'm planning to flash MODEM_419D_V.00050 to my x829, running stock 16s. I don't want to flash a whole new different region stock ROM (23s) just to get the modem upgraded. Also, I've read that the modem files contain the fingerprint firmware as well, so that's a plus. I want to do it because I've always liked to have the latest versions of everything and keep it all updated. Just for the protocol - I don't have any modem or fingerprint problems with the stock 16s that my phone came with.
What should I backup, so I can go back if something goes wrong, or my network starts misbehaving? And how should I do it?
Thanks.

Not sure about the radio files. I use the one from 23S. Regarding ROMs, the D ones are the more alpha or early beta experimental dev test ROMs. 23S is a stable beta I believe. I think 21S is actually the last official Chinese release. 19S was the last Indian release, maybe? Looks like that side of LeEco's business has gone down the pan, so wouldn't be surprised if they don't release any more. LeEco seem to be in a bad way financially, so praying that we at least get an N based update before they go pop!

16s is the latest for x829. Actually, it's the only available US ROM and from that point of view it is the most up-to-date of it's kind
Makes no difference which you use as every one of them has bugs. Using 20s Chinese currently and can't get Gmail to come through auto and sometimes don't get texts sent to me and often sends 5 texts to someone when I send just 1.
I am very tempted to sell it and but a oneplus 3.

That's one of the most tragic truths of this phone. LeEco abandoned US users of this model, in favor of a specific US model. The 16S modem is the only one I have found which supports WiFi Calling with Tmobile (which is the only US carrier which supports that feature on this phone.) So we are stuck using it, unless LeEco releases an update which incorporates this functionality.
Basically, if you are in the US, and need WiFi calling, don't bother trying other ROMs which are incompatible with the 16S modem, or other modems. It probably won't work for you.

You're right about the incompatibility. I was using Small EUI (23s) rom and tried to flash 16s modem on top of it but then the phone refused to boot up.

Yeah but if you look at the modem download page all Chinese modems end in 33 lol. It was just the 1.9 at beginning I was referring to and nowhere on that baseband does it mention 23s?
What Modem had D466? Anybody tested?
Did flashing modem actually helped someone with "dead" fingerprint Reader?
I read in other threads that flashing developer modern helps.
But the question is how to back up original modem?

Heyyo, boot to TWRP and go to backup and scroll down to firmware and select it... She's hidden at the bottom of that scroll menu. Took me a bit to figure it out heh
Tbh I find Chinese firmware 23s or 26s better. They are technically modem firmwares but they do also affect fingerprint reader in sleep mode
Thats fine, I installed the latest dev modem firmware. I thought it may help me see something in qxdm, most monitoring fields seem to be empty for me. But it didnt help... The providers here are using bands 1, 3 and 7 mostly. I get less than 50mbit downlink speed most of the time I know the connection is good in the area because when I put the sim into another phone, I get up to about 150mbit.

Ah you might benefit then from checking your band selection from this thread but I'm not 100% sure.

Tbh I myself use Chinese 26s firmware since I find it gives me the most reliable signal and the fingerprint reader speed is ok. Developer firmwares to me are the opposite with fastest fingerprint reader but worse signal quality
https://yadi.sk/d/woKdrlRrv8yhr/Китай
I'm on the Chinese 26s from that link. the one without 0509. Of course results vary from user to user so you can always tinker to your heart's content as to which modem firmware compliments you the best.

[SOLVED] Is it safe to flash a KII-L22 rom on KII-L05 (Huawei GR5 Rogers Canada)?

Since I'm kind of disliking EMUI but love FlymeOS, I'm planning to flash the latter on my phone. I'm downloading the latest version from the official site, flymeos(dot)com.
However, it is listed under Honor 5X, and described as compatible with KIW-L24 / L22 / L21, KII-L23 / L22 / L2 (no mention of KII-L05).
I did some research and KII-L22 / 23 seem practically identical to the L05, in fact certain sites do not even bother to make a distinction between them when describing the specs.
So, can I safely flash this version of Flyme on my device?
Thanks in advance.

If you are on Volte firmware your have to downgrade to non volte firmware before going to custom rom..
I think it for all honor 5x..
Give it a try but do not forget to make full backup before flashing rom.
Hey, thank you for your answer!

So I gave it a try and got error 7. Maybe it really isn't compatible after all?
Btw here is something else I noticed on their forum page: "The rom is based on android6.0 and it is necessary to flash the based rom", and they provide a link to this based rom, it's for an Indian version of the Honor 5X KIW-L22. I'm quite wary of flashing it though (again, due to the difference in device version). Do you think that it would be absolutely necessary?
In the meantime, I successfully flashed LineageOS. Actually really liking it so far, might as well just keep that if I can get everything to work the way I want.

It's the very first time I encounter error 7 so I don't know, but it is what it is.
Either way, I set up Lineage to my liking and everything seems to work, so at this point the only purpose of flashing Flyme would be aesthetics, though I doubt it's worth the risk and the time. So I'll mark the thread as solved.

Hi there,
First of all, when you say "this rom", which one are you referring to, Flyme, Lineage? They are NOT stock roms for Huawei/Honor devices. The stock for Huawei is EMUI.
I don't know what model number the Philippinean version of the Honor 5X has, but im pretty sure Lineage for kiwi (Honor 5X codename) is universal across device versions. As for Flyme, it installed fine (eventually) on my Canadian version of the phone without being inteded for it, but it was incredibly buggy and unstable, absolutely unusable for daily tasks.
If you feel you must flash a custom rom, go with Resurrection Remix. Don't touch Lineage with a 10 foot pole (I know I wrote above that I was loving it, but shortly after that I discovered a serious bug in it, basically the thing did something to my SD card making it act as if it was ejected after each reboot, I had to reformat it to get it to work properly again). RR has an interface nearly identical to Lineage, but vastly more options and the SD bug isn't there.
However, from personal experience with two different devices, my advice is to avoid custom roms altogether and always stick with the stock. Even the best custom roms like RR are still less optimized for any given device and therefore will function worse than even the crappiest stock rom, such as Honor 5X's EMUI. Since I wrote my original post I tested over 10 different roms, settling eventually for RR but then was not able to stand using even that for longer than a month. The problems were mostly minor annoyances, but when they all added up it drove me crazy.
You say that your phone doesn't have cellular signal, what happened that made it lose it? Depending on what the problem is, it may not even be correctable by flashing a different rom.

The majority of roms don't cover all the mobile frequencies. I use the KII-L22 in Australia and have the same problem.
I'm still to find a rom that has the mobile frequency B8 included.

Really? For me if there was one problem that I never got with any of the roms, it was roms not supporting my frequencies. Lineage, RR, and whatever other ones I've tried. The only exception was this one: https://forum.xda-developers.com/ho...m-honor-5x-flyme-os-lollipop-flyme-5-t3429879
No cellular signal at all was working on it for me though not even on 3G or 2G, so I assume there's a bug of some kind in it.
Currently I'm on this rom: https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-5x/development/stable-flyme-6-7-5-19r-honor-5x-t3615084
It's quite good for being a custom rom, but it takes A LOT of fiddling to get everything to work properly. It says the rom is for KIW-AL10, but it works just fine on my KII-L05, even though those variants do not normally share the same bands.

The LTE bands in the KII-L05 are B 2, 4, 5, 7. In the KIW-AL10 they are B 1, 3, 38, 39, 40, 41. As you can see, none of them overlap. Yet all the bands in my KII-L05 work perfectly fine on a rom intended for the KIW-AL10, so your reception issues are not caused by the roms.

So then why don't you just stick with the stock rom? Honestly, finding a good custom rom where everything would just work is next to impossible. In my experience, at least. Or you can give the rom I'm currently using a try (I linked it in a post above), it may do the trick, you never know (but don't blame me if it breaks your phone ).

Thank you for the link to the rom. I will have a look and if I try it, i will let you know how it goes.
