Hey guys, I am considering getting a Z2, but my main problem is i drop my phone quite often. I can't find any drop tests yet, could you tell me how the build quality and screen sturdiness are compared to Moto RAZR, cause that's my current phone and it has survived a lot of drops without a scratch?
Stop dropping it lol

If you drop your phones on a regular basis, maybe it's not the best idea to buy a phone with dual-side glass, eh?

You should probably get a lanyard and hang the phone from your neck.
I've never had much of an issue dropping phones in the past but I put a strap on my Z2 and I'm glad I did because I've nearly dropped it twice now, it's quite slippy to hold, the strap gave me chance to catch it.
It will probably break if you drop it.
My friend dropped mine from less than a foot onto laminated wooden flooring and the back cracked.
Is with Sony now for repair and I am missing it big time!
Well I have dropped it one when it slipped when I took it out of my pocket, and I just have a scratch on the metal edge.
But what you have to think of is the phone has a glass back so it can break just as easily as the screen.

I saw a drop test on youtube but i dont find it again..
so, the phone glass break as soon as it drop screen facing the floor...
the sony phones are tough
I drooped my xperia arc several times and it survived a smash from 2m (with broken glass tough, but touch still working)
the touch was destroyed when i drooped it while biking, it hit the road, then a truck, then a concrete wall. mind you: it was still working, just the touch did not work anymore.
similar with my xperia s: I dropped it ~50 times. several times i hit concrete floors from > 1m, several times it hit the pavement from >1.5m
i fortunately did not yet drop my Z2
Almost any new Smartphone will have broken glass when dropped. Thats because of the new gorilla glass which is more lightweight but also less robust.

I'm more concerned about dropping my Z2 than any other phone I've had. I never pick it up without a lanyard around my wrist first. Seriously detracts from my enjoyment of a new device.
I never was too cautious with my devices, and probably due to luck my only real loss was breaking htc one x screen after numerous drops Now i dont plan on being paranoid about z2 also, front is as tough if not tougher as any other device, while back is easy replacable and cheap, so some may not like my attitude, but im gonna enjoy phone without worrying too much..

Same here. Actually I only cracked my old Sony w300i screen, but this was, because I was skating while having it in the pocket.
A phone is only a please to use if you do not defile it with cases, screen protectors and so on.
I dropped my z1 3 times from chest height and no issues. One scuff on the corner of the aluminum frame but screen is great. Like any device though it depends on how it lands.
Sent from my D6503 using Tapatalk
Fortunately for me I haven't dropped my Z2 (yet) but I have had my old Z slip out of my hands a few times and it lived. I once caught it with my foot just before it hit a marble floor, I'm pretty sure that would've broken the glass.

Yes,but you forgot that the Z and Z1 have the antishatter layer that protects the device more than the Z2 without it.
My Z has fallen so many times. First time after I removed the antishatter layer it broke after falling on concrete.
I would put a case on the Z2.

Antishatter film doesnt make glass tougher, it just wont let glass to shatter in small pieces and cut yourself..

I dropped my Xperia T several times from 1-1,5 meter - on concrete too - and it had only some small scratches on the side. But that phone has a rubberish plastic back that makes the phone jump around I will be more careful with the Z2 now
ive had mine about a month now n dropped it maybe 5 or 6 times, its fine but its only fell from my lap as i stood up and its been in a gel case since day 1
I dropped my phone from about 1.4-1.5m and while it dropped it was smashed on the table and my cupboard and fell on the tile floor on face down and it survived.Just a little scratch right next to the microsd card slot side. I wasn't using a cover that moment. So actually nothing happened

Hi,
Just making a random thread, when I get a phone I always get a case because I'm afraid the drop proofibility(I know its not a word) is not up to scratch(pun unintended). However I'm waiting on sony's official white case. Just wondering, how drop resistant is the Xperia S. Not telling anyone to drop their Xperia S to find out.
Please share your experiences
I'll put it this way, I dropped it by accident and I've a big scuff and dent on the top right at the back of the phone.
I keep looking at it, with sadness.
I havnt dropped mine but if I did and it smashed it would not suprise me, feels very heavy/fragile!

Heavy? Really? IMO its a really light phone. Feels the same weight as my x10 but its way bigger. It surprised me when I opened the box and took it out.
Having dropped my x10 upwards of 4 times, never having a case I'm kinda confident in Sony's manufacturing. Thing is nicked slightly, few marks on the screen protector but if I replaced that you'd take a second to realise it wasnt new out of the box.
That said, I have a nilkin on the way and I'm going to be Uber cautious until it arrives.

It really depends on how it drops. Though being a phone with sharp corners definitely has the downside of being less drop resistant, as seen that poor phone above that looks like it had it's skull cracked open
It's partly why a lot of phones you see have rounded corners, as they are more adept at distributing impact forces to the sides.
Too bad I'm in love with the rectangular design, so I'll have to be more careful!

No phone is drop resistant unless you have one of the old nokia phones. Those are wall resistant as well.
I thought they would make phones a little more drop resistant by now. On my old Samsung galaxy s, the gorilla glass does shatter, but I swear they could they could fix that by having very ever so small protruding edges to stop the glass contacting the ground, that way i don't need a case, that was with the old galaxy s but i guess this xperia s, the plastic and the glass are both vunerable

Its certainly heavy enough to hurt itself when dropped.
i dropped mine on the toilet floor in an airport and the top right hand corner got grazed and had a small hair line crack
...i ordered a case before this incident and the case came the day after the phone got damaged
oh well now im trying to get it replaced under warranty
How many times have you dropped your note?
I was terrified of dropping it at the beggining and I was so careful. I figured I would break easily because its so big.
I've dropped it many times. One time I dropped it from about 4-5 feet in the air onto a marble tiled floor, it fell with a deafening bang on its corner and bounced about 2 feet and dropped back down. It didn't even turn off. Just the card got ejected. So screw all you people who think plastic phones suck! They're so lightweight and so durable. Love those iPhone people walking around with cracked glass!!

Yeah, and it shatters as soon as it hits the ground!
I've dropped mine twice. Once on concrete and the other I can't remember. Both chipped or dented the bezel but didn't damage the glass.
I had an iphone 4 that I dropped and broke. I went to the store and said "I broke your unbreakable glass, what can you do for me?" and got a free replacement even though I was outside my warranty period.

Ironically, I have dropped my note twice only after I got my otterbox defender case. Of course there was zero damage. I think I heard my otterbox case laugh and say, 'you call that a drop?'
Ive dropped mine once, but it was very low drop. it was fine, but reading other stories gives me chills.
I dropped it from about 4 ft, landed staright on its face and tons of cracks in the glass.
I put a screen protector over it, the pen works perfectly still since the screen isnt cracked and someone even told me they could barely tell because the colors are so vidvid.
I have insurance, but they want too much money and paperwork with the Note 2 right around the corner. I figure ill wait and try and find someone selling one for cheap/broken ports etc then give away 200$ AND my hardware that is still worth a bit of money.
the not cracked part has more area than a 3.5 in screen anyway
Dropped it agaim today. No case. Back popped off and battery fell out but no damage at all. Amazing.

I've dropped mine significantly only twice. Both times scuffed the silver housing, but the screen is still perfect. I could care less that samsung uses plastic, it holds up super well in drops. I have a tpu case, but I rarely use it...only when I'm out partying or doing yard work etc. Prefer to use phones nekkid.

My wife knocked mine out of my hand a few days ago (accidentally). It fell about 4 feet, and I went diving in for it... and missed. It skipped across the concrete a few times, and luckily only ended up with some scuff on the two side corners. I received more damage than the phone. It is truly quite durable. Apparently I need a skin protector for myself, more than a screen protector or case for my phone.

I guess I'll comment on what I've read so far.
I love the look and feel (and weight) of naked devices. Its a big device but its manageable without a case. So, though I've seen some nice cases, I'll keep it naked. Another thing, best buys insurance is much better, no deductible. It just doesn't cover theft.
Hi there, new Galaxy S3 owner here.
I've done extensive research about the phone and durability was what scared me the most. Nevertheless, the power, screen, and other features over my aging Galaxy S, proved too good to pass up, so I went ahead and bought it in the end.
The galaxy s3 is reasonably well built in my opinion, however, the metallic rim does not protrude out of the bezel (the galaxy S1 and S2 both have a slightly protruding rim), and therefore, provides very little protection in the event of a face down drop as the glass strikes a surface first, and not the rim. The videos on YouTube also confirm my theory as the GS2 suffered no damage in a face down drop, while the GS3 got wrecked. Corner drops also seemed very lethal to the GS3.
With all these fears in mind I have got myself a flip case that covers the corners and the screen, but is that really necessary and will that help during a drop?

Dropped my "naked" phone twice once on a linoleum floor from about 3 feet, the phone landed on the upper left corner, no damage of any kind and on hardwood floor from about 4-5 feet and again no damage, this time the phone landed flat on its back. My conclusion is that S3 should survive all "indoor" drops just fine, dropping it on the sidewalk or in a driveway will probably damage it that said I'm willing to risk it as I can't stand putting a case on the S3 as in my opinion doing so completely ruins the look of the phone.

If you've owned a GS1 like I did, (or even GS2), you'll feel how I had balls of steel with that phone as it's literally unbreakable. In a WWII tank analogy the GS1 feels like a German tiger while the GS3 feels like an M4 Sherman

Dropped mine once, not too high though. Luckly nothing happened and it is still intact!
Sorry to bring this thread up again, but today the inevitable drop happened! Dropped it out of an unzipped pocket of my jacket at a height slightly above my waist probably from a height of about 1 meter or so.
The phone landed flat on the screen with a noticeable thud, on a concrete pavement with loads of gravel on top of it. It didn't even bounce once so that's a heck lot of pressure. Thankfully, my flip case was closed (as seen in my first post), and the padding for the screen probably saved my GS3's arse big time. I guess that case is a very good investment after all practical while still aesthetically pleasing Any other experiences for drops or other accidents?
dropped my phone screen face down twice now, at home( height is slightly lesser than 1m i guess, table-height - i tend to sweep the phone off the table for some reason ) so far no noticeable damage

YOU dropped your phone, not Samsung, not anyone here, accept it and deal with it and take responsibility for your actions......and YES, you do need a case for your car if you are a rubbish driver and keep crashing......see the similarity?
This is what it is made of materials that cell, S1 and S2, so many times I fell down (on the asphalt, the tiles) and it worked, and S3, and the time it collapsed!

I don't believe in cases, I've had three smartphones and all three are working to date without cases. My first smartphone was the HTC Wildfire and when i first got it i also bought a $10 Hard case for it, one day my friend accidentally kicked the phone out of my hand and on the floor, the case shattered but the phone was intact. Since then I dont use any kind of case on my phones. On the S3 i use an screenprotector and an clear skin protector for the back(because it scratches easily), I have dropped it several times from a height of 1m-1,5m and the phone doesent even have a scratch on it. Either my phone is stronger than yours in some way or I'm just lucky
Since you bought it, has your battery decreased in durability? Are any of the power/volume buttons damaged through normal use? Flaps still in place? Any bad scratches? Have you noticed any slowdowns of the NAND memory? Anything else?
I've owned mine for 7 months now, and it's still like new. I can get two days of use out of the battery, and the buttons are fine. I've dropped it on the floor once (naked), but it took no damage, fortunately. I've since kept it in a case and with two tempered glass protectors. It should last at least a couple of years more, I think. Very happy with the build quality of this device and will definitely consider another Sony when the time comes.
I'm on my second GPe, the first one kept freezing/rebooting on me. Other than that, the phone has been fantastic.
Since I made this post, my phone has spontaneously rebooted on me twice while watching YouTube videos. This really sucks.
*edit*
My problems are stemming from something I've installed on both phones. The likelihood of getting two phones that exhibit this same rebooting problem is slim, and I can find no instance of other people having these problems, no matter how deeply I search the web. After factory resetting this second phone, and installing absolutely nothing on it, I'm not getting any reboots.
Three months having this phone now.
Got unlucky and dropped it before I got a case, on hard floor, but luckily only a scratch on the right corner.
Other than that, everything is fine.
Love this phone.
Need to replace the flap that covers micro usb charging port, it was my fault as I put it in tool pouch I use for carrying it in without closing and it snagged when taken out and broke.
The usb port flap might cause some problems. The rubber part in mine fell off and i ordered another flap from ebay. I sure hope it works

Mine drop 3 times, ear speaker broken, scratch and dent at corners, screen perfect, battery still good,USB flap change once.
1 year this October Well battery life is still about the same, maybe a little bit lower but that might get affected by other factors. Got smashed on the magnetic dock lip, initially the metallic strip got bent out of the body but i straightened the metal manually and almost no visible damage. the rubber on the USB port almost got detached but thankfully it hasn't, still water proof. using tempered glass on both side. Still going strong.
45days now and so far running alright. Just upset at how quickly the oleophobic coating started wearing off and a tiny bit disappointed that the top and bottom bezel is plastic so mine has the coating chipping off on our end order from a drop. I don't know if it me or everyone has this but the screen is just too sensitive by default. Whenever there would be wind I get random presses all over but I've increased the filter for touch sensitivity so it's all good for now.
Very good build
Been using Ultra since 10 months. Dropped 3-4 times no any damage, battery defiantly last for at least 24 hours, since I am very heavy user watch movies or you-tube at least 2-3 hours a day and browse net for least 1 hour and play games as well so considering my use I would say defiantly battery life is good might decrease performance little bit. just damaged USB cover and i would say its my fault reason I never covered it proper since got this phone. other then this everything as new. I am really happy with this phone.
Well that was almost a very expensive 1 hour call back to work tonight.
As I was about to leave work at 8pm I dropped the new GPe on to the concrete floor. I'm lucky that it was in a flip cover, but I still broke the top plastic bezel after breaking the cover. It bounced and then landed on the bottom right corner and cracked the cover there as well.
Top right of cover:

Damn blue...I'm really sorry to hear that this happened to you. I suppose it could have been worse though eh? Have you ordered the replacement trim piece yet? if you do replace it, please take some photos of how it's all done :fingers-crossed:
^ yea would love to know too. Been meaning to see how the replacement is done. Like do you need to dismantle the phone to replace it is it like a clip on? Stuff like that
it looks like it is just glued and clipped in with the aluminum case under it
I'm 12 months in, and my ZU is still kicking like a champ. I dropped it on the ground a few weeks back and it scratched the bottom left bezel a little bit, but other than that, it's totally fine. The ASP on the back has a lot of scratches, but i don't care since i can remove/replace it. I'll probably hold on to my ZU until the Z3X or something comes along. I've been super happy with Sony, so i'll probably stick with them. No point in upgrading this year though (unless you have something weaker than the S800). No point in upgrading to 801-805 if you have the 800. 810 will make things interesting again.
