Rooting Issue - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys,
I'll start by saying that I wouldn't normally post like this so please don't overlook or shoot me down too harshly. I have done extensive searching on XDA and google and found nothing yet so if this has been answered, please simply point me in the right direction.I have experience in rooting and custom roms and what not yet I cannot seem to root my I9300 (JB 4.3 build; i9300xxugnd3).
I have tried the Odin-CFroot way. With three different version of CFroot, several versions of Odin (as admin) and all the USB ports I have.
I also checked that kies wasn't running at all yet still this method just freezes at recovery.img until I stop it (Even waited an hour plus!!)
Also tried the K1mu safe root which simply froze at "sending files to device" and nothing happens either.
I simply want to root the phone, Is that too much!
Cheers

Can you flash normally with Odin? Try a factory reset then flash the latest stock firmware, if that works then try CFautoroot again.
If the firmware fails to flash then you have emmc issues.

I think it's already running the latest stock. I'll try again after work today but I don't seem to be getting anywhere fast at this point.

I have tried flashing a couple of CWM Touch imgs and CFroots but they fail. Odin 3.07+3.09 still freezes at "recovery.img" but Odin 3.04+3.06 and 1.85 finishes at "<ID:0/009> Complete(Write) operation failed." - I am currently trying to download a stock image from Samobile but they have a server issue so its going to be really slow. Any ideas in the meantime?

Phone stuck on "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue"

I dont't see odin or download in the phone at all. Just connect to Kies. Is my phone bricked? Can it be restored? If it can be restored, can someone lead into the right direction? I was trying to restore the phone and my power went out for 10 min and now it's back on
If you haven't shut off the phone you should be able to load it back up in Odin desktop and start over. Can you get into download mode?

Lol. I couldn't figure out how to make my phone do what I wanted so I returned it for a new one that I still won't be able to figure out how to make do what i want because I don't wanna learn just give me cool shizz naoww!
The problem wasn't your phone. It was a kies / driver / USB port problem, lots of people are experiencing the same thing. But I agree with the above poster, please don't modify the new one. If THIS was something you're willing to return it for, imagine if u had an actual problem.

Try installing Samsung Kies http://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=...Hsxw4ptEdLDgjmDtA&sig2=s2Ik_zAvbYl1EZ28DFGk_A
then pop off your battery and get your Model and serial (NOT IMEI!) numbers and write them down.
in kies click on tools>emergency firmaware recovery a window should popup
boot your device into download mode
on the "emergency fw recovery window" should show your device... it will ask for your SN and model, input them as it shows on the back of your device. It will then install the latest Samsung FW (ICS).
worked for me when i got mine to the point odin wasnt working.
Stock SGH-I777 "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue"
My phone froze and when I tried to boot it back up it showed "Firmware upgrade encountered an issue". I'm running a stock jellybean rom so I tried emergency recovery with kies and it gets stuck at "Proceed to firmware emergency recovery" at 0%. I have tried using different usb cables, ports and even different pc's. I also reinstalled all the drivers properly. I tried flashing a stock rom using odin but it always fails. I can go into download mode but not recovery mode. I looked at many threads and the common course of action is to flash with odin. I have tried numerous times with different methods and it still won't get fixed. Please help. Thanks in advance and I apologise if this question is getting old but I am stumped.
note: before this happened the phone was working perfectly fine. I was running a stock rom and no root

Flashing the kernel
Thanks @cyril279. I tried it again with no luck. Flashing the kernel failed. And now it shows that the current binary is now custom. It was official before. And also the binary counter went from 1 to 3. IDK if that helps at all
The increased binary counter is likely the result of attempts to flash the Siyah (non-stock) kernel. I was unaware that it would notch the counter if the flash was NOT successful.
Assuming that you followed the steps thoroughly, in their correct order, and using the correct firmware for the exercise, (siyah kernel and SBL.bin) then I am left to assume, as the post states, that your eMMC memory is damaged.
I have not had much experience with damaged eMMC memory, so perhaps our peers can chime in with other options that may be available to verify the condition of the device.
creepyncrawly said:
Try the following, just in case the problem is nand r/w corruption.
[...the six steps...]
If you are unable to get any of these to flash successfully, first you should assume a bad port, or bad cable, and try other ports, other cables, even another pc. If you can get no flash to succeed, then you may have damaged eMMC memory.
In case it is damaged memory, see this post from Mobile Tech Videos.

An unusual Odin problem.

Hi!
After flashing my stock Gingerbread rom to CM9 (through CWmod) I decided I wanted to switch to a more stable ICS rom (was running an old version of CM9). This time I tried to use odin and got a fail (NAND), giving me the "Connect to kies" screen. Unable to get into recovery, but can get into download.
So after this I tried flashing a few kernels (after failing to use the softbrick recovery method on this forum), all of which passed and left me at the Samsung splash screen (still unable to get to recovery). I then tried flashing Siyah and lo and behold it allowed me to get into recovery, prompting me to flash FoxHound via zip (one of the only .zip roms I could find). After this I tried to use ODIN again, only to have it fail on me again. This time siyah would not even work, and after trying many other kernels (all of them saying they had passed) a earlier version of siyah worked, and I am now running the FoxHound rom that was on there.
I would quite like to go back to the official Gingerbread rom and then update through KIES, can anybody shed some light on whats happening? Do I have a NAND corruption even though I am able to use the phone at the moment with foxhound? If I wanted to put Gingerbread back on will ODIN play nice?
Thanks!
P.S. Did all the usual of using different cables and making sure kies is not running whatsoever!

Just download an official Gingerbread Firmware from Samfirmware and flash it through Odin. It should work. You will then loose CWM and Root of course but after that you should get updates via Kies.
And do not check Re-Partition in Odin when it`s not a 3 part Firmware.
Maybe try mobile odin pro-that eliminates ALL pc problems.

[Q] Used p4vzw/sch-i905 cannot be modified

I received this verizon Galaxy Tab 10.1 as a gift and a project, but haven't been able to make any progress.
The tablet was bought from a taxi company that used it was in car entertainment. When booted, an app immediately starts up and removes the navigation bar. If you are fast enough, you can get to the settings and uninstall this app before it starts, or what I have found to be easier, just use shell commands to hit home and uninstall while the app tries to regain control.
The table is currently running 3.2, and cannot update over wifi, nothing happens.
Root was gained by an unknown method, but the SU app won't open up. I can access su through the shell however.
I have tried flashing a cwm recovery through ODIN which says is successful but if it is booted straight to the recovery it is still stock.
Flashing ROM's through ODIN appear to be successful, but just boots right back to the original rom and recovery.
Adding anything to the SD card or anywhere else accessable to the stock recovery does not work either because the SD card is reformatted to the original contents every time.
This also occurs with any apps that are installed, each one is removed when rebooted except for SU. And Rom Manager FC's when CWM is attempting to flash.
nvflash will not work either because the bootloader is locked.
I don't know much about the boot sequence for android, but I looked for any init. files that are out of the ordinary and cannot find anything.
I'm giving this tablet away when I finally figure it out, I just want to fix it. Any help would be awesome and let me know if I've left something out.
Even if no one has any specific suggestions, can someone post a PIT file for a SCH-i905? I have seen the stock firmware that can be flashed through ODIN but it does not stick on my unit.
Thanks!
Excuse my English but my original language is Spanish.
The default verizon tablet brings in recovery an option that reloads the original recovery. If units installed CWM via Odin must access the recovery option (Vol +) on 1st boot and enter the option to leave cmw (reboot) will give you the option of not recovering the recovery.
The other alternative is to flash via odin the original software look it by google "PDA_HC31_EG01Ba_AP352081user_CP1033580_LTE20110704_0708"
in this case the tab stay with the factory version.
if the team does not have SIM must type top left - top right - bottom left, bottom right and then vol + to unlock.
good look
This is the post that you are needing.

i had the same problem but pulling the sim and unlocking as mentioned above helped a lot then went through the whole rooting process through odin and have not had any issues with anything reverting back to stock. only issue now is not very many roms for our model "bummer" all in all still a good droid tablet for what i paid lol if you still havent got it going let me know and i will give you all the directions and steps i used
I have tried installing PDA_HC31_EG01Ba_AP352081user_CP1033580_LTE2011070 4_0708 through Odin3.
I do boot directly into recovery after installing CWM, the stock recovery still persists. I have tried several times because I know sometimes it does not stick.
I have also tried flashing the factory image linked in that xda post "[ROM]EG01 - Factory STOCK ODIN Image - VZW LTE Tab 10.1".
Boots right back up and starts the same taxi cab show case media software it normally does.
One thing I did not note in the first post. I do have root access when the tablet is booted into the os, but I do not when the tablet is in recover. I dont know if this is unusual or not.
I can also install busy box, but have yet to find out his would be useful.
I also do not have access to nvflash, but I think this is normal because the bootloader is not unlocked.

Awesome, I'll give this a go when I get home.
Was there a p4vzw twrp version some where in those links?
Looks like all of the ones referenced were 3g and wifi only.
Sidenote: I don't care if I keep 4g functionality or not, I will only be using this for wifi, if that makes fixing the problem any easier.

I was able to find the thread, thanks!
After downloading the odin flashable twrp, I tried first with Odin3, but it failed. Then I flashed with JOdin, this first pulled a PIT file from the tab then failed to repartition. If I ran it without repartitioning it said it was sucessful, but if I boot straight into recovery the stock android recovery still comes up.
I have a way to get a pit file now though, so that's nice.

Wow. You didn't do any research at all did you? You're going to have to find a ME7 (or later build) .tar file and use Odin to flash back to stock and start all over.
Just know you CAN'T install a custom recovery with ME7 (or any build after that) and you can't revert to an older build. Your ONLY option is Safestrap. Read that thread I linked you to and do your research.

Please help me unbrick my phone.

Hello everyone,
I've looked through the forums and I haven't found a good way to unbrick my Verizon Galaxy S4. What happened I think was that I already had safestrap recovery installed and I tried to install a different recovery without first uninstalling safestrap. Anyway, the phone won't boot up normally now. It goes into download mode first. And now, it says "firmware upgrade encountered an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again." Kies doesn't even recognize the phone so that is not an option.
I have tried to flash a stock image with Odin, but every single time I get a "fail". I've tried multiple version of Odin, including 3.09 but I haven't had success yet.
Could anyone help me get my phone working again?
Thanks.

I'm not sure of the build, but I tried both files in this link:

I've tried others but I believe the ones above should work? I still get a "fail" every time I try to flash them. I've had this error before but I cannot remember how I got it to work.

Any chance you can post the screen of the Odin fail error or tell us where it's failing?
Side from that idk... Odin is seeing your phone so not the drivers. I'd say try the MK2 file and you could also try putting the PIT file from that thread in Odin along with the tar just to try it in the mean time.

Also... You think you had SS on your phone? But not sure?, there's a chance your phone is on NC5 Kit Kat and that's why MK2 won't work but really we need more details before going that route.
