[Q] Change from 1080 to 720 - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I own an HTC One (M7) which has a 1080p screen but pretty bad battery life. Since I switched from a Galaxy Nexus to the M7 I personally don't have a problem switching back to a 720p screen. Here is my question:
Is there any way of changing the screens resolution (I am rooted and have a custom ROM with Xposed)?
(Like on windows you can set a 1080p screen to display the content in 720p or even lower, which makes the system run faster since the GPU doesn't need to push around that many pixels)

does this help?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2329080

I also think that in cyanogenmod you could change to 16 bit output

Tried, works fine.

Didn't work for me either but I came across the terminal emulator which gave me ability to change it myself. But still thanks

new archos 101 owner, some questions for you guys

Hi guys,
I've just purchased a archos 101 and am "reasonably" happy with it... I wanted something to browse the web in a comfortable way without having to boot my PC.
Now I know I shouldn't expect wonders for the price I payed but I would like to get your input on following points:
- browsing is kinda choppy when scrolling. Not really a big deal but off course a smoother experience would be nice so if there are solutions here I would like to hear them I don't know if another browser might make a difference?
- video playback: this is a complaint from the misses , she was going to make a chocolate cake and wanted to view the "howto" movie online. It started up but was really choppy (this is the link to the movie: http://www.vt4.be/videos/chocoladetaart). I don't know if you guys can play this video smoothly with whatever setup you have?
I don't know the resolution of the video (I know the 101 can handle 720p) but if the resolution is higher is there a way to play it in lower resolution somehow without a lot of pre-video-watching-actions?
PS The video played back nicely on my HTC Desire with Redux 1.2 ROM (gingerbread)
What's the advice for this tablet in general to get the full potential out of it? Is installing urukdroid a must or are there other options?
PS I've set power management already to "overdrive"
Thx
B
Archos still doesn't have a GPU-accelerated version of Flash, so Flash playback in the Browser is a bit rough. I usually find that it's acceptable once you put it into fullscreen mode. Also, that video was fairly high res for Flash, usually I'm watching stuff through youtube at 360p, so you may want to test with some lower quality videos, and don't forget to go into fullscreen mode.
IIRC, there is no way to make the system capable of playing videos over 1280x720. I use Handbrake on my PC to downsample any of my 1080p stuff, but obviously it takes time to reencode. You could use something like TVersity to recode on-the-fly, but I always found it to be a PITA.
Installing Uruk isn't a must by any means, but I like to theme my device and do alot of other stuff that requires R/W access to the system. Performance is better in some ways as well, such as having ext4 partitions instead of the stock squashfs, but it's not a huge difference. Uruk also has advantages such as Ad-Hoc wifi connnections, better phone tethering compatibility, support for DVB, etc.
Overall though, if you just use it to browse the web, I don't think you'll see much difference with Urukdroid. Doesn't mean I don't recommend it though.

I know what you mean, but you can play 1080p on your Archos, but extreeeeemly slowly, around 0.3-0.5 frames pro second
@msticninja : did the video play ok on your device or was it jerky?
I've been experimenting a bit with browsers and so far opera mobile (not mini) seems to be the smoothest... if you activate "opera turbo" it's even faster but pictures are lower quality
I've tried stock browser, opera mini, opera mobile, dolphin HD and Skyfire
cheers
B
It was pretty jerky. When she was just standing talking it wasn't bad, but once 50% or more of the pixels were changing on each frame, it skipped badly until the movement settled down. It's just too high res for the flash optimization. You can either try to watch lower res vids, which I know is hard in this situation, or you can try to use a Download Helper to download the flash video, then play it in the stock Video Player. Should be no skipping there with the hardware acceleration.
Eventually, someone will either hack together or legitimately release a hardware-accelerated version of Flash for our Gen8 devices, and that should make it drastically better. At least I hope someone will.

I watched that video on my desktop computer and my quad core processor went to 25% on all 4 cores and had burst download speeds of 1Mbyte/s so watching this on a single core non optimized flash will be a disaster.

Yes, the GPU acceleration makes a huge difference, more than I thought it should, until I realized that GPUs process data differently, with multiple cores/threads, and the fact that they're designed solely to pump out pixels, not numbers. (Yes, I know that's kind of an idiosyncrasy)
If we get GPU acceleration, it would probably be capable of playing flash games even.
update: just installed Flash Player 10.2.156.12 instead of 10.3 and there is big improvement in the video! it's still a bit choppy but much much more "viewable"
cheers

Encoding video for the tab 10.1

I returned a gtab a while ago since it could not play 24p smoothly. The 10.1 is somewhat better but so far in terms of smoothness it is bested by my N1 and Sensation.
So, what settings are folks using on their encoding? I'm using Handbrake.
I've found that the device cannot do high profile, a limitation of the tegra2 I think, a bummer.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1060825
The tab can do 720p high profile.
With one notable exception, the latest leaked TW rom from calkulin for some reason can't.
But if you're using stock HC 3.1, Bonsai or the euro version of TW it should be fine.
use that preset with Handbrake & you'll be fine
Based on the linked thread I gave dice a try and things are good. Will give the profile a try as well.
Thanks guys!

Edit: It looks like High Profile works, but not in all cases. My dream of dragging my 720p rips and just using them are not gonna happen. No biggie.
FYI if that's my handbrake profile he linked, I've seen reports that the scaling settings I saved don't get loaded. If it's not scaling to a max of 1280 horizontal, 800 vertical, you should set these. Unless you're using the HDMI output you're wasting storage space and encoding time.
All of you are wrong. You cant use 1280 x 800 resolution because the task bar takes up 48 vertical pixel.
None of you are encoding videos correctly.

Lol. Don't feed the troll.
After chatting with the dev for diceplayer it turns out tegra chokes on wheighted p frames. I've gotten 720p24 with cabac and 8x8 working fairly well. Tegra2 does not have robust high profile support.

[Q] Could a custom ROM improve performance?

I have the Optimus 2X, which seems to struggle playing flash videos that are higher than 480p, yet the Motorola Atrix which also uses the Tegra 2 SoC manages to play 720p flash videos smoothly.
Could this be caused by LG not optimizing the software properly? Would a custom ROM possibly fix this problem?

I don't think. Flash uses a lot of hardware resources, most probably its a hardware issue.
Still you can try a modified ROM and if not satisfied, revert back to your factory rom.

My LG G2x (almost the same device ) can play 720p videos smoothly. Are you sure it's not your internet connection at fault?
P.S. - Yes, custom roms are able to improve the performance of devices.
I would consider checking if the actual ROM you are using, isn't messed up (try a clean installation and see if it continues to stutter the videos).
Also managing your apps on your device would improve (in some situations, like too less system memory to finish the rendering <- NOT sure of that one) performance.
Check the background apps - maybe you are running too many background apps, which occupie memory, and in conclusion you have too less memory to work smoothly.
And as it is for your question for the custom ROM and improoved performance - definately YES. For example HTC HD2 with stock rom of WM is way slower than a custom Adroid 2.3 GB on the same device.

Yeah I think my internet connection should be good enough.
It's incredibly odd though - over at GSMArena.com they had a 3 phone review featuring the Galaxy S, Galaxy SII and the Optimus 2X, and they found that the Samsungs were both able to handle 720p with no problems (the SII could handle 1080p as well), but the Optimus 2X could only go up to 480p.
This is particularly interesting to me because the Galaxy S should be much weaker than the Optimus 2X in terms of hardware.

I just did an upgrade from 2.2.2 to 2.3.4 through LG, and did a factory reset shortly after.
Perhaps I'll try CM9 after its finalized.
FYI: There is a problem in the CM9 camera app which does not support video more than 480p for Galaxy SII. I have replaced the camera app with Gingerbread one and solved the problem.

[Q] I need some opinions

If someone have SM-G850F (Samsung Galaxy Alpha). He can write me his opinion about this phone. He's look gorgeous, and performance look fine for me. But all experiance and opinions are welcome. And i really care about battery life. Its only just 1860 mAh. Is that's okay ?
I'm one of standard user's (just texting and calls, facebook and whats'app ) . Is this will be enough for me ?
Thanks.
Sorry if my English poor.
Buy another spare battery its removable.
According to GSMarena galaxy alpha had 52hours endurance rating so if you have two batteries then a total of 104hours hehe!
http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_alpha-review-1118p3.php
I bought this spare battery charger so I can charge my spare back up battery
Performance is excellent I think on par or in between Snapdragon 808 and 810
Thanks to 720p resolution the GPU can load faster graphics compare to heavy 1080p to 4k resolutions, besides its a compact 4.7 inch device so there's no problem even not full HD.
As of today there's no huge difference when you play a game on a 4k resolution or 720p resolution
Clickme
Execept in terms of speed, huge resolutions needs a powerful GPU to render those graphics well while 720p resolutions like Galaxy Alpha (see attachments) can render faster graphics much smoother.
4k resolutions = same visuals(720p) but less FPS
720p resolutions = same visuals(4k) but much faster FPS
So which do you prefer?
I like compact a phone, easy to handle and to operate and of course not eye catching especially in public places.
Anyway having a powerful and a compact device like galaxy alpha

[MOD] Force Nexus 6p to down scale to 1080p

WARNING: SWIFTKEY AND ANDROID PAY REPORTED NOT WORKING
So 1440p on a 5-6in phone is pretty useless, I research a way to actually force our phone (or any) to use 1080p instead of 1440p
pretty simple, there are two way you can do this, one via Terminal or the other using ADB...the ADB way is
adb shell wm size 1080x1920
adb shell wm density 390
then reboot your phone....
second way is, download the terminal and input
su
wm size 1080x1920
wm density 390
reboot phone
if you want to go back to 1440p it will be
wm size 1440x2560 (if you are using adb then adb shell)
wm density 560
pretty simple, let me know if it work or not this suppose to make your cpu/gpu work easier instead of harder thus enhance the battery and lower the heat generate by your phone.
Please dont debate whether you can see 1440p or not...because you cant....dont kid yourself.
not that I care but if it work give me a thanks, I am more interested in how it affect people. since this is my first day of doing it so I dont have any evidence other than cooler phone.

NoMone Resolution Changer application would also work. Please do report back if you notice any battery improvements.
Also please note when down scaling, since the 1920x1080 resolution is not exactly divisible with 2560x1440, there would be some display abherrance which some might notice purely because of down scaling problem which would not have come if the display was actually a 1080p 5.7" screen.

Isn't this just changing DPI? I suspect those info apps show PPI, which doesn't change because it depends on hardware.
Textdroider_dpi is the app I used with OPO, and it worked fine. You do need root.
The first thing you notice after changing dpi is that icons on the main screen change size (to the eye).

In terms of display power consumption, yes there wouldn't be any change. However, the GPU and to a lesser extent CPU doesn't have to be driven that hard to run the display on a lower resolution (s/w wise), hence theoretically leading to better performance, more efficient CPU & GPU. This can lead to battery savings as well potentially. (could be marginal, but needs to be tested)
Anybody tested? Can you extend SOT time? Also 1080 would not be the same proportion...

Yes I read the OP. I read the whole thread. The issue is that actual no one is confirming better battery. Most do not get it to work. Hope to have some extra time tomorrow to test it. Under the theory it should work. My MacBook pro retina has lower battery consumption under lower resolution settings. This should be the same
