Now that we have root and are able to backup the TA partition (which I have done) I now feel comfortable with flashing custom recoveries/roms/kernels however I'm unsure of a few things as I haven't owned a modern sony device having had HTC as my previous android smartphones (and WinMo too although messing about on WinMo was super fun and easy and pretty much bulletproof.... I miss those days).
From what I gather, unlocking the boatloader is a fairly straight forward process much similar to the htcdev method necessary for the One X, send info to Sony, receive unlock token, proceed with unlock.
With this in mind I want to do 3 things: -
1. Use Philz touch recovery. I used this on the One X so I'm familiar with it and find it to be easy and robust to use
2. Use doomkernel - being able to fine tune power usage and cpu usage interests me greatly
3. Use RomAur, I'm always a fan of stock looking roms with great customisability for example on my One X, I used Mike1986's ARHD Rom.
So far as I understand, for my purposes points 1 and 2 are combined as doomlord included Philz touch recovery in his kernel, is this correct?
Now this is where I'm a little confused or perhaps mislead, some guides are saying to install .402 ftf before flashing anything else if on a previous version rom, in my case official .55 but if I'm doing a full system wipe and install, is it not simpler just to flash the recovery and boot into recovery and flash a new rom from there (having the new rom located on sd card like traditionally done) if so then this leads me on to the next stage.
I understand that to flash the kernel/recovery, I turn the phone off, hold volume up or down I think it must be volume up as volume down is to enter flashmode correct? And connect to the pc and perform the actions "fastboot flash boot boot.img" exactly like that on the HTC One X, is this also correct? After that, how do I boot into recovery?
I apologise for the longwinded thread but whenever I do this kind of thing, I like to be thorough and have everything correct, you know, the measure twice cut once mentality. If anyone can confirm these details and if necessary point me in the right direction of what to do if I have anything wrong, I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks

1.Take note that if you restore your TA on a custom kernel it will brick because its equivilent to relocking on a custom kernel
2. Volume up is fastboot mode ususaly used for flashing kernels, volume down is flashmode (usualy firmware flashing n fixing)
3.to boot into recovery using doomkernel you press the camera button when the purple LED with vibrate shows, if ur using philz reovery advanced stock then it would be volume up
(Doomkernel has TWRP (vol down) and CWM (vol up))
4.you can flash directly to 402 with the respective kernel, you do need to wipe since your jumping a firmware set, going to from 55 to 69 is fine but not 402 because its B 402 and not A 402 un like 17.1.A.55 or 69 its 17.1.1.B.402 (or something of a new set)
If i missed something just ask

Yeah I wont be relocking the bootloarder, I understand that to restore the TA the kernel and rom need to be on stock for that so that's no problem.

So I have to powerup the phone and wait for the LED to flash before pressing the button or is it a case of hold camera and turn on power?

Yeah that's what I intend to do, flash kernel, boot into recovery, install new rom from SD card doing full wipe in the process or do I have to push the rom from my pc over usb cable?
With the recovery press the camera button a couple of times when the LED shows
Put the files on your Sd and flash, i tested and its only your internal storage which is wiped but id still backup your Sd contents

Excellent, thank you so much!
The process is pretty much very similar to that of the HTC One X then.
Unlock bootloader, flash kernel, reboot into recovery, flash rom - Enjoy customised Xperia Z2.

hello i have resently unlocked my bootloader through htc's unlock method. i then followed that with installing cwm 4.0.1.4 and then rooting my phone through cwm.
i have read over http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1193948 to understand everything i would be getting with the synergy rom. however i cannot seem to find an installation guide anywhere and after researching everything thing i could find from my understanding i need to do these things
install my rom OM|Nightly|◄●|Synergy 3Dvo|●►|2.3.4RLS1(zeus mods)|☆TESTING EXT4 TWEAKS|
flash over a compatible kernel
flash over a proper radio img (which from my understanding if done wrong WILL brick my phone)
my questions are. 1 in what order do i do these things? 2 how do i flash my radio? 3 is this the correct command for flashing a kernel (fastboot flash boot bootimgname.img)
thank you in advance for any response and i do apologize for all the questions. im just really fearful of bricking a $600 phone
Simple
Ok first off odds are you have the latest radio go into settings>about phone> software information>more if your baseband version is 0.97.10.0808 you have the newest radio. To flash the synergy rom download the appropriate file plug in your phone to your computer and move the zipped file to the root of your SD card don't unzip it move the whole zipped file. Power off your phone and then holding the power button and the volume down button your phone will reboot just keep holding them until it does you will be at the boot loader after it runs through the loading option scroll down to recovery press the power button to go to recovery. Once in recovery scroll down to apply zip from sd card press the power button press the power button gain on choose zip from sd card you should now see the synergy rom you place there on the root of you SD card press the power button again to flash the rom once it had finished continue going back until you get to the main screen and click on reboot phone viola your done you don't need a different kernal the one that comes with the rom works just fin hope this helps if you get stuck you cam PM me and I will try and help

if your going to flash synergy use the offical build i wouldnt use the unoffical till u have tried out the rom. firt you will place the rom on sd card it doesnt matter where as long as you know where it is when you go into recovery after that reboot your phone then if you want flash a kernal you will also do that in recovery as for radios there is a sticky post in the cdma dev thread where it says root/roms/guide just go to the radio section if you have anymore questions ir need help with anything you can pm me anytime i will be more than happy to help
Thanks guys. I flashed CleanROM 2.3 right after I posted this. Its pretty much the same thing just wasn't sure and I've bricked an older phone before so I just wanted to makes sure I didn't do it with my 3d. Thanks again!
no problem if u ever need help with anything pm me i will happy to help
Hey so I installed synergy and ran into a few issues with it. One issue was none of the restart shutdown options function how they are support to. Most just reboot the phone rather than booting into recovery or shutting down. I also couldn't restore batch backups in titanium backup. I had a few other issues that are currently slipping my mind. Could this be happening because I'm using my stock kernel?
I installed a nightmare sense rom for my phone, this was my first time flashing a custom rom, so it's likely I did something wrong. I installed it tee for tee from the video I watched from the developer. Any how it won't boot now, it just power cycles threw the htc quietly brilliant screen. I'm kind of new to adroid any one know of a way I can restore this thing? I got the bootloader unlocked, but I don't think its still rooted. I've been working on this for about 8hrs now trying various stuff with caution that i'm not screwing things up ore.
before you flashed, did you make a backup through recovery? What recovery are you using? s-on? s-off?

Thanks for the reply, I didn't make a backup, I am using twrp, and s-on. Am I screwed because I didn't make the backup?
if you came from stock, then you just don't have your stock rom anymore.
Use hasoon's all in one tool to flash a kernel, twrp won't flash that part for you, sounds like you're jsut missing that part of the install.
Then, install 4ext, which flashes kernel and rom for you, no matter what rom you decide to flash.

What's the risk of flashing kernels? The only mobile os I'm super familiar with is iOS(android turned out being sweeter haha) , but I have blown a baseband chip, basically I'm asking will I damage the hardware not executing that correctly? And do I flash the kernel with recovery or the bootloader booted up, (my only two options). My bad I am a noob, but greatly appreciate your help!
simple solution
Step 1: Boot phone into bootloader by removing battery then placing battery back in phone then turning phone on by holding VOL down and Power button
Step 2: use hansoons AIO toolkit while in bootloader to flash 4EXT recovery
Step 3: boot into recovery and use 4EXT's to mount your phone to the PC using their "toggle USB storage" feature which lets you access your SD card while in recovery
Step 4: place another ROM on your phone, and then disconnect phone from PC
Step 5: do a full system wipe before you flash new rom, Format DATA SYSTEM CACHE+DELVIK
Step 6: FLASH Rom you placed on SD CARD previously
Step 7: After flashing rom successfully go back into 4ext recovery or download 4ext recovery control, and make a NANDROID backup in-case you fk **** up later or again
STEP 8 ( HIT THAT THANKS )

it's not a problem, hehe. Ive gone through the same things and more the past week or so lol.. so ive seen a lot of problems that im able to fix, because ive caused most of those problems myself... i would recommend using either speed rom or fourth bar infusion because they seem to be the best looking function rom's out atm... well according to my standard i don't really like sense roms.. ASOP ftw!!

Causing problems + fixing stuff is literally the story of my life! I just haven't dabbled with android enough yet to have it down, and get really paranoid considering i've ruined an iPhone before. I actually really dig sense tho, being stuck with various iPhones for 3 + years w such a dull and plain user interface makes sense all the better(not hating on apple, still love os x). I'm downloading rebirth now, hopefully it's *****in haha. But seriously thanks again for your help, I feel like I have this shiznit mastered now!
Motorola defy is comes with locked bootloader. But defy have so may custom roms(miui,ics,jb4.1,4.2), custom kernels, and even use two or more roms to boot.( one from internel and others from externel sd card). If defy is able to do this with locked bootloader then why photon ?.
These are the words from defy wiki page.
LOCKED Bootloader, what does this means? For some people is hell, for others (normally non advanced users) is a pretty cool insurance for their phone. This locked Bootloader thing means there is no (so far) way to rewrite the Stock Bootloader or the Stock Recovery. When the phone turns on the Bootloader basically starts all the hardware and make your phone come alive. Then we have the Stock Recovery, this little part of your phone is also locked and cannot be removed or changed from your phone, it will allow you to make Recovery stuff like Full Wipe (Data and Cache) and install Update.zip files. At first this became a problem, because with a locked Bootloader there is no way to install a Custom Recovery like ClockworkMod or install a new Rom.Here is where2nd Initcomes to play, this little awesome app kicks inright after the Bootloader and allows the Defy to load a different, non-Stock Android. With this, you can also install a Custom Recovery, which runs from the Internal Memory, and is not ran from the Recovery Partition (remember: locked, not accessible) what does this means? That even screwing up your phone, deleting allyour stuff, or screwing /system partition the phone can still get into Recovery, be recognized by RSD Litein Bootloader Mode and be flashed with a Stock or modified Rom (more on this later) and it will come back tolive normally. Thanks to this locked Bootloader, is really, really hard to Brick your Defy. Most of the issues seen on the Forums are NOT Bricks, just incorrectly flashed SBFs (more on this later). With brick one mean the phone has no access to the Bootloader or can’t initialize its hardware, requiring you to use a JTAG to directly reprogram the phone (which I’m not sure is possible on the Defy).
Custom Recovery
A custom recovery is a special"App"** that comes in a separate partition in your phone. This"App"** allows Android Phones to do recovery tasks, like deleting data, installing recovery Zips and so on; The tasks you are allowed to do withStock Recovery are pretty basic. Here is where Clockwork Mod comes into play.CWM is a Recovery that allows you to not only do basic tasks but also create Nandroid Backups, Restore Them, Fix Permissions and quite a lot of other useful stuff.Normally a Custom Recovery is installed by flashing the Recovery Partition in your Android Phone witha Custom Image, but since our Defy comes with a Locked Bootloader, this is not possible. Leaving us without many options to proceed. And that's why we have 2nd Init, thisapplication is what actually installs CWM in the Defy, it does it by installing it in your internal memory and not in your Recovery Partition and then pointing the Android system to it right after the Stock Recovery boots.**Is not actually an App, is more likea Linux Console with UI so you can recover.

I think if our devs modify the 2ndint apk for photon, then all locked photon users will able to try all roms available here.

But we hope he'll b successful.... N we can enjoy the test of different ROMS.

It is glad to hear that and hope he will achieve it. Compared with photons hardware my defy is far behind.
I was purchased my photon from ebay few days back (only looking its specifications!!)
After reading through this forum i realised that its not possible now to try jb, ics, or even some cm7 roms in my photon becouse it is 2.3.5..

Don't really need some special help here, just want the device to function again no matter what way. (Don't care if it's factory reset completely it has nothing on it I was just using it for a bit of experimenting).
So anyway, I have an HTC One x that I tried to install Cyanogenmod mod on but when trying to flash it (I was a bit impatient and just did what I thought would work), it didn't work and I'm stuck on the HTC Boot screen. I can still restart the phone and get to the recovery menus or whatever they're called. But even when doing a factory reset it still just won't get past the boot screen.
I'm just someone who has a good love for android and got given this phone for free so I thought I might experiment with rooting and all that, (I don't want to do this to my main driver, the Z1, for the life of me).
Any help here would be great.
Thanks

If you had just used htcdev.com to unlock the bootloader and are still S-On, you need to pull/extract the boot.img from the CyanogenMod zip and install via fastboot.

You're welcome. Pretty common issue when people are getting used to how it works for HTCs.
Pro Tip: If you want to simplify the process, you can use this: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify and install the boot.img with the phone while booted, then boot to recovery and finish the rom install. Recommend doing a nandroid recovery first, just in case the boot,img/rom combo does not work properly, otherwise if you flash it first THEN do a backup, the new boot.img will be matched with the old rom and might cause issues upon restoring if they are not compatible.
Alternative: S-Off. Depending on which hboot you are on, you should be able to do S-Off. It can be a bit of a pain to set up, but once you do, then you can install roms just like normal as the boot.img will be able to be flashed from recovery along with the rom like in most phones.
Hi all,
As the title says pretty much. I tried to install the SlimKat rom, being new to installing ROMs I followed the instructions and somehow my phone has pretty much been bricked. I hold the power button and the phone vibrates, but nothing on the screen turns on and nothing gives me hints that it is working in any other manner. I can't boot into recovery either when I hold power button + volume up. Any solutions on how I could possibly reset or get the ROM working?

1. non stock based custom roms require you to unlock your bootloader as not doing so will result in a brick
anyway try this to recover your device -> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53968631&postcount=35
you should be able to exclude wipe data when your about to flash a Stock FTF to prevent data loss as your internal will be wiped with your user data
see Step 4

I previously unlocked the bootloader but then did a factory reset, perhaps that re-locked the bootloader? Anyways, thanks for the link, will get back to you in a few hours.

i think this depends on how you reset
try checking if your bootloader is unlocked after you repair your device, try looking on the service menu
You can also use this method to Install stock Android OS on your Device :
