Ok so I am not even sure what the build number is, it seems to be missing from the list (see the SS's). But I think it is the same as the baseband? MJ7. I am on Hyper 15 and would like to upgrade but am completely lost, there are way to many posts about root this version and that version and upgrade and downgrade and I don't even remember what threads i looked at or what all I did to get rooted in the first place. And now I see there is this brand new root method if your already on KK. Would it be easier to load up the stock from safestrap then upgrade and re-root?
Can anyone give me a step by step?
Load phone info app from play store. Will give you all pertinent info. Also several threads out there that has I info including a stickie in general section that you need to read and bookmark.

That's exactly what I did so when I did surges method for going to NC5 I still retained the mk2 bootloader in case I want to go back to 4.3 based ROMs. I did full wipe mk2 odin.

Don't upgrade. Big mistake - little benefit and a lot of problems people are reporting. Many of the top developers are recommending staying on 4.3 and using a 4.4 rooted stock rom in safestrap if you absolutely wand 4.4

Yeah I really like Hyperdrive and want to stay with it. So...
Delete rom slot
Boot into stock
Odin to mk2
Re-root/safestrap
Install new Hyper 16.1

look at surges method for upgrade/downgrade that installs a rooted deoxed NC5 rom as part of the process...first...then to install hyperdrive just do what you normally would do with flashing a rom in safestrap making proper wipes and all
your steps won't work as listed

Hi All!
I rooted my Galaxy S4 on Verizon earlier today (well, attempted to) with VRoot. It worked, but everything was really sluggish so I attempted to flash back to the stock Samsung ROM. I discovered that since I was running 4.3 with the MK2 OTA, I can't flash a previous version. I can't find a copy of the MK2 ROM anywhere. Does anyone here have any suggestions or maybe a link to the MK2 ROM for the i545 on Verizon?
Thanks!

There are several ways to root the mk2 version but both vroot and kingo have been deemed unsafe by the xda mods, in the development thread there is however a root method for mj7 that does in fact work with mk2. also im gonna warn you before hand that there is no custom recovery available for the mk2 or mj7 versions of the gs4.

If your talking About flashing custom ROMS/recovery's, then no, and if you attempt to do either it most likely will result in a brick. However a Dev by the name of Hashcode, is currently working on making safestrap compatible with MJ7 & MK2. I hope that helps clear up some things.

How did you use Kies to download MK2 when you while rooted?
I have the Verizon S4... I took the OTA and updated to MK2. I then rooted using Saferoot.
All is good ...
Now.. Is the recovery unlocked? or do I need Safestrap Recovry to get ROMs on this?
Please advise.
Thanks!

That's caused by a defect in the install script that I introduced when trying to add more prompting to help people connect. Re-download and it should be OK.

You ONLY can go backwards from MK2 to MJ7. You seem to be interpreting this as being able to go back from MK2 to anything, and that's not the case.
Both of those releases only allow custom ROMs using Safestrap, and both support the same ROMs. There's no point in downgrading to MJ7.
I’m kinda torn, I don't think there’s enough people on ME7 that are actually working towards a bootloader exploit any more...I’m thinking of taking the update to see if more of us working together on MJ7 might yield better results. I know the pros/cons of taking an update so I'm not about to post this in Q&A and have a long worthless thread, I'm also not asking for peoples opinions on what I should do I just want to get a feel for the number of people on each build. If there’s still enough of us on ME7 ill stay there and keep trying to see what I come up with, I just don't want to work on something that’s only useful for 8 people.
ME7 not as locked down as MJ7 from bootloader and security aspect. Safe strap most likely only option from this point on....just saying.

I know ME7 is not as locked down, its because its SELinux is permissive and not enforcing like it is on later builds (MJ7 & MK2) and also its not as Knox'ed down (<-- Claiming that) as MJ7 and MK2 either. I know Safestrap is the only option right now, but I don't even use Safestrap (nothing against Hash - its a great achievement) but this has nothing to do with Safestrap.

I am reluctantly coming to the conclusion to move on up to MK2.
I'm on MI1, but now there is a safe root for MJ7 and MK2 *AND* tethering works, there is a patch for Wallet and Wanam works.
No reason to stay on MI1 anymore. I was the only one that answered MI1 in the poll. I didn't/don't use Safestrap.

I don't really know, there's been a few updates and there has to be some improvements worth having by now. I do have custom recovery, I wasn't sure if trying anything would make me lose that capability though. Once I rooted and installed it I got out of the whole modding scene so I have no clue what's going on at the moment.

Taking Verizon update to newer firmware will remove your ability to flash aosp ROMs cyanogen mod and all the other greats...safestrap for newest firmware has extremely limited support at this point allowing you to only flash touchwiz ROMs based on mj7(only 1 or 2 as of now).but if you stay on mdk you can flash aosp as well as update to mj7 without locking yourself out permanently (or at least until another workaround is found)...they have worked tirelessly to gain access for custom recovery... Seems close...but may never happen...if you upgrade and no new exploit is found you will be stuck with touchwiz only for as long as you have your device

There currently is no native root method for NC5 but you can downgrade partially back to MK2 and gain root.
Read through this thread and really take your time and make sure you do all the steps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2726868
Downgrade method is a little further down in the OP

If you're on mk2 you can use saferoot to root the phone.
You cannot install a true custom recovery like you tried to do since the bootloader is locked. You can install SafeStrap after rooting it.

I've done some searching (for several hours actually) and think I'm just more confused than when I started - so please forgive me for asking if I just haven't found the "right" answer thread somewhere among the thousands of posts here...
I am trying to update my wife's rooted S4 (Verizon) on 4.3 (MK2) to Lollipop 5.01 w/root. To do this, I was following the instructions near the bottom of this page that start with "Install Lollipop on Verizon Galaxy S4 & Keep Root"
http://www.droidviews.com/install-lollipop-on-verizon-galaxy-s4-and-keep-root
I followed everything as directed, and upon running FlashFire, it blacks out for about a minute, and when it reboots, reboots into standard recovery mode and just sits there. My only choice is to reboot.
I've tried it several times and get the same results. I end up right back where I started. Which makes me think these instructions may be lacking or my setup is not what's expected?
Any pointers appreciated - or completely different instructions if the ones I followed aren't correct or if there is just a better way. Thanks for your valuable time and info in advance!
You are on the older version so, the Flashfire may not like the fact your on the older bootloader! If your gonna use a ROM find one that uses the MK2 bootloader, or first update to a KitKat (4.4.3) NK1 bootloader ROM, then update the Flashfire

Thanks for your reply.
The instructions linked to a ROM for non-MDK bootloaders - which is the one I chose being on MK2. But you're saying I need to start at 4.4.3 at least?
What's the best way to get there without losing root? Or do I update and re-root?
I tried doing and OTA update on this setup and it errors out. I'm assuming I'd have to unroot to get the OTA first? But if I do that, will I get the 4.4.3, or will it try to go right to the latest Lollipop build?
Again - thanks in advance!
Let me do some research, will get right back to you...I believe you need the NK1 or NK4 bootloader.
