[Q] Need to replace cracked screen - Motorola Droid RAZR

I have a friend with a droid razr and the screen is cracked. I've checked out the videos on youtube on how to do it, but I'd like to ask people that have done it before, how hard is it? I know "hard" is relative, just curious what people's experiences are with it?
Thanks
Dan

Watch all available videos that you can, have all the tools, have lots and lots of patience, and don't force anything... unless everybody else has to some degree. I personally wouldn't try to unstick laminated parts apart with a hairdryer, I would just replace a whole screen system.

dismantling the hermes...

Hello,
I have the white screen of death at the moment, and i'm pretty sure its a hard ware issue - 've narrowed it down to being an issue with the connectors in the ribbons... I'd like to take the hermes apart - Is there a guide on doing so anywhere on the net - I'm having trouble finding one -
cheers - JJ
Hi JJ,
I would recommend taking a look at Mike's (a fellow moderator) site here. He has a wealth of info on the subject of tearing apart the Hermes.
Good luck!
after viewing the youtube video - I've decided to take it to the shop....
wise move!
Believe it or not .... Seeing How easy he did it in the Youtube Video it's Super Easy. I thought Like you did but I"m on Tmobile with No warrnty so I had no Choice ..... Here I am Two Hermes Deep and both Taken apart And I Changed Housing Myself And Made Sure all Connections Were Secure and no More White Screen Of Death.
so you too had the white screen of death? and tell me, did taking it apart and sticking it all together again fix the problem immediately?
I know this question wasn't directed towards me, but I thought I'd answer anyway. The "white screen" problem is caused by a loose connection between the LCD and board. So, by reattaching them, the problem will be fixed immediately. Well, that is of course unless it's something else...

Removing A Screen Protector

I just installed the Screen Protector that was included in the HTC TD2 box. Although i centered it with high precision, there 2-3 spots on the screen that show when the device is off (when the screen is lit, they are invisible).
Someone else might not bother, but since I am a perfectionist, and also I have seen and plan to buy a very nice Screen Protector on the web that doubles as a mirror, I would like to remove the current one. However, I have two questions:
1. How can I take it off without making any scratch or other kind of damage to the device?
2. By taking it off, will there be any leftover glue/sticky stains on the screen? If yes, how can these be cleaned completely?
1. Just grab any corner with your nail (but be careful)
2. no
3. I did it yesterday, that's why i know
1. sellotape, leaving a peak in the middle so you can pull
Unless you've used them before, be aware that the 'Mirror' finish type also reflect when you are using them as well, not like when the device is off, but something you need to be aware of.
and yes, sellotape, I never use anything hard (even a finger nail) as you might damage the thing you're trying to protect (the screen) when its at its most vulnerable.
Thank you all for the info, guys! That was helpful!
@ Steeve24: No, I have never used the mirror ones before... Your comment about them demotivates me to buy one: If it is reflecting during the use of the screen, then this sounds rather unhelpful for seeing the screen clearly...
Remember that the touch screen is designed to be touched, with or without a screen protector. It will therefore withstand a certain amount of punishment from fingernails and suchlike. It isn't as desperately delicate as some people may have us believe.

Following on from this, I just found the post that pointed this out:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=523788&page=2 the pics speak for themselves, does look good when its turned off, but I think the reflections, especially in bright sun light could be a big problem.
Well, after seeing these pictures, the mirror protector is now definitively a no go for me....!
Update on the mirror protector: I saw it on a friend's device, and decided to give it a try after all... Conclusion: Its look is very impressive, and it can be useful sometimes (especially for the ladies! ). It's true that it degrades the image somehow (especially under direct sunlight), but I wouldn't say the effect is grave... In any case, I will watch its behaviour for a couple of days, to see if it is convenient or not.

Digitizer change.

Hi All,
Im having some problems with my Evo 3D. It was scratched out of nowhere by just sitting in my backpack MP3 slot. I found some dust on the screen (most likely thats the cause of the scratches). I have 2 medium scratches and a lot of minor/medium. The problem is that I am really getting upset when I look at my screen and I decided to accept it condition no more. I have 2 questions (For the first one I am pretty sure of the answer, but still I will ask it).
First. Are these scratches covered by the warranty? The obvious answer is no of course, but I am wondering - since it is with the "mighty" Gorila Glass, how did it got scratched without even dropping it... So Im thinking, is it possible that the warranty will cover this?
Second. If the answer of the above question is NO - I will change my digitizer. I chose to change the digitizer because it costs 10 pounds, comparing with the whole screen which is 70-80 on ebay. There is something that bothers me though. I am afraid that even a slight misalignement will cause troubles while using the phone and missclicking some stuff... Also I am afraid that dust might get between the screen and the digitizer while Im doing that.
I hope there is someone that already done this (and I mean digitizer only change) that will be able to help me with some advices and/or techniques. I am technocal guy, so following your instructions wont be a problem. Its just I haven't change Evo 3D digitizer before and I want to have proper preparation.
Any advises will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Have a look at this:

I posted some stuff on the last page too so you can go to that.
HTC might fix it for you, probably at a cost, you can give them a ring and see if they can help
Other than that, just read through the link i gave, alot of good info there that will help you replace the digitizer. Good luck!

HTC Amaze Camera faint dark bands, ICS?

I've noticed ever since I've upgraded to ICS (could be completely irrelevant of the upgrade.. but I never noticed it before today) that using the Camera on my HTC Amaze has these really faint dark bands.. they are only really noticeable on a solid-color surface in low lighting..
It's very obvious when taking the pictures (on the screen/viewfinder, because I can see them remain static as I move the camera around)
I'm just wondering if anyone else is experiencing this or if it's a sudden defect in my phone's CCD.. I pay for insurance but the lines/bands are so faint and barely noticeable that it's hard to justify $130 to fix this... It just seems so weird because I take such good care of my Amaze.
I've tried restarting the phone, I've tried different camera apps, I've tried adjusting settings manually (resolution, ISO, etc) they appear in all. They also appear in videos. I've tried cleaning the sensor both with the case on and off, no change.
Here are some examples of said "bands". I have no 'control' pictures to show but these are all pictures of a solid color surface.. they are very faint but definitely noticeable once you've noticed them.. it's really annoying and I can't figure out what the problem could be.
I've done extensive searching.. tried multiple keywords "bands" "faint black lines
really can't find any information about this problem, only thing I've found is a couple of threads on other forums for digital cameras.. but nothing that could help me solve this.
I know they are really really faint, but it's very noticeable on the screen when taking pictures of anything solid now, and in low lighting.
So, anyone have any idea? I could shoot for a replacement, but I'm just not sure if I'm willing to spend $130 when most pictures turn out just fine.
I'd also like to add that I rooted the phone and it's unlocked so I'm weary of going for the warrenty replacement (the phone is only a couple of months old). I'm afraid if I do a warrenty replacement with T-Mobile that HTC will come back with it being unlocked and not under warranty, and I'll have a $450 charge from T-Mobile waiting for me... if anyone has any experience with this sort of thing (utilizing warranty through T-Mobile's program with a rooted/unlocked phone) please let me know. I understand that T-Mobile will send you a replacement, while returning the phone to HTC.. but that's about it.
don't like to reply to my own posts but I take it nobody else has/is experiencing this issue? I keep thinking it's 'normal' for low light/solid color situations, but I'd really like to know if others experience the same thing.. if i'm being too picky?
If it's a faulty sensor i'd really like to start the process of getting a replacement, just curious, anyone?
I don't know if this helps, but I don't have that issue with my camera. Using stock app + modified .xml (eliminates compression adding quality)
Damn. Good to know, thanks.
Looks like something is up with the sensor then Really sucks.. still torn between going for the replacement ($130 deductible) or just keeping it.. you can't see it on ANY pictures, really.. only noticeable when looking at solid color surfaces in low lighting.. ugh
decisions decisions
Going to try and throw Android Revolution or EnergyROM and see if that changes anything.. but I doubt it ;/
I think the question you have to ask yourself is "How often will I take pictures where there's a predominant solid color?"
If that would be, I'd say rarely. Then I would keep the phone.

Can someone please clear up wether or not I need to purchase a screen "frame" also?

Can someone please clear up wether or not I need to purchase a screen "frame" also?
A family member cracked their screen. It's definitely not just the glass that is cracked. I found a few sellers that have what I need, but I have no idea what the "screen frame" is. The picture looks like a motherboard. Can someone please clear this up for me.
What exactly is the "screen frame"? In all the YouTube videos I've watched they just heat the thing up, pull it apart, disconnect some ribbon cables and then basically do the reverse to install the new screen.
Pretty sure I do not need the "frame", but I'd really like to know exactly what it is. In these pictures it looks like a board without camera, battery, et cetera. Is the "screen frame" something you need if the phone got slightly tacoed? The phone is now only *slightly* curved. It was so slight I was able to easily bend it back.
I'd just really like some clarification on this because I will likely end up waiting for the part(s) from China and I want to get the right thing(s).
Thank you.
EDIT: Okay, so I watched a few other videos. The frame is literally a frame that you transfer the small boards over to. Okay, so can someone please tell me *why* you would need to replace the frame? I mean, seems like if you need to replace the frame then some boards are also likely damaged and the phone is more or less (depending) junk. What is a situation where you would only need to replace the screen and the frame and nothing else? I just want to make sure I'm understanding this right.
