increase parition size for apps? - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-I777

Hello there everyone. I'm running the latest shoshock ROM. I recently tried installing a couple large apps but kept getting an error (can't recall which one specifically) until I uninstalled other apps. I googled this problem and on a forum post somewhere it mentioned that the partition space ran out, even though the internal SD still has many gigabytes leftover. I do not run a sesperate SD card. I have around 3gbs of space unused so I want to reallocate some of that space for apps and general OS performance. How do I do this?

I am aware of two people who have actually tried this in their sgh-i777, by following instructions found on the forum for the international version of the Galaxy S2. One person, who was from Italy, said he hard bricked his phone and had to take it to a repair shop for jtag recovery to get it working again. Another person who tried this soft bricked their phone and had to reflash the stock firmware along with the i777 pit file to get the phone to boot again.
While this is theoretically possible, as far as I am aware there is no correct partition table file available to use, and using a partition table file made for the gt-i9100 or some other phone will result in a soft brick, or maybe even a hard brick.

[Q] Lots of free space on /system and /cache while /sdcard is full

After installing CM-9 (and testing CM-10), I don't see myself going back to the stock ROM. Samsung includes a lot of really large apps, so a stock SGS3 needs large /cache and /system partitions. With Cyanogenmod and all my apps installed and configured, /system has 1.1 GB free space and /cache has 900 MB. Is there any reason not to repartition to steal an extra gig for /data (that would be used for /sdcard)? Is this even doable?

Android Original Development their is a new thread in that regard .

all those free space will sit empty. you have to bear with it. there are some advanced methods to repartition it, but its too rsiky and is not worth the risk unless you are an expert in linux and dev stuffs.
and some apps in the system partition is better than empty space
Thanks, guys. I found the thread you mentioned (this?). It looks like people use Odin to repartition these phones. I rooted without using Odin, so I didn't know.
I would actually be fairly comfortable doing things the linux way (resizing partitions with fdisk, using dd to move data around, and reformatting when necessary). The problem is that if the partition table gets messed up even once, the device will probably become a paperweight. It's not like Linux where you can just boot from a CD then restore your old partition table. If my S3 won't boot into recovery, I can't make any more changes to the partition table.
I think I'll just be patient for now--it seems like people are running into problems using Odin to repartition their phones. Maybe I can use up the extra space by playing more games
If you don't touch the first partitions (very small Samsung-specific ones) you'll be fine since the phone can boot recovery and use a PIT file.
Worst case your phone is completely dead and needs Jtag'ing from a phone repair shop (I hear the cost is around 50$) which will re-flash download mode/bootloaders on the phone through direct hardware access.

Thanks, I'll think about that. The problem with just messing with the later partitions is that there's just one partition table and it's in the (logical) front of the drive. Mess that up and it won't boot recovery. Flashing from download mode shouldn't work either, because when you flash that way you're flashing specific partitions (which will no longer exist as they used to). (Edit: forgot Odin can flash .pit files. I haven't used Odin yet.)
I need to do a bit of research, partly because I'm in Asia. If local repair shops have JTAG units and if I convince myself that even a ruined partition table is recoverable, I'll do it!

[Q] Total Space only 4GB

16GB S3 i9300, Temasek CM11 Rom
I can't get the /data partition to recognize as anything other than 4GB. I've used Mega Wipe, flashed a stock 4.3 rom w Odin, wiped data, formatted data, flashed a pit file in Odin. I don't see any backups, Disk Usage only sees the partition as 4GB. I've done this all many times just to make sure.
My mmcblk0 partition says unmounted and is 7.5GB. Could this be my issue?
Try this

Try this
Erase-All-Content-on-Samsung-Galaxy-S3
Im not sure about this
Flashing a pit file is a last resort on a total brick, it could have been just legacy data held when you updated from 4.1.
Try the rescue firmware, in general thread, if formatting the internal sd card didn't help.

I tried the 4.3 Korean Rescue Firmware. Still no go. Only 4GB data partition. My phone is made in China, I'm wondering if that is why. It doesn't appear to be fake as it's taken every rom I've ever flashed to it no problem. I wish there was a little partitioning program so I could see if there's extra umounted space there. I just feel like I'm about out of options, I'm not sure what else to try. Maybe the 4.1.2 rescue rom?
Just tried 4.2.1, no go with that one either

I'm dealing with the exact same issue on a SGH-T999. It's a 32GB phone but is only registering 11.95GB. When I look at mmcblk0 it says it's unmounted (see attached screenshot). I've done many of the steps you have and still no dice. Not sure where to go from here. I hope you and I get answers to our problems.

I flashed my phone what seemed like 100 times trying everything everyone told me to do and I gave up. My phone is only 4GB but everything works, oh well! I wasted about 100 hours messing with it and nothing can make this 16GB, or ~11GB anyway. I'm hoping to pick up a bigger SD card when I get back in the states as my 16GB is about full, too.

shiggins,
I finally figured this out and fixed my phone. I know you tried several things. So, let me run past you the solution that worked for me.
I located the appropriate .PIT file for my phone (S3 T999 UVDMD5). Then I flashed the stock rom with root (i.e. root66 ROM) with the PIT file. After I flashed it with the correct PIT file, I got my storage back. Have you tried this?
If you have and it didn't work, it's probably because you didn't have a good or the correct PIT file for your phone. Let me know if you want further direction and I'll do my best to assist.

I know this worked for you but I would use extreme caution here! Flashing pit files is only to be used as a last resort! ( To recover from a hard brick)...
Recommending to flash pit files when (1) Your phone is fully working apart from minor issues is very bad. or (2) When your phone is not hard bricked...It's not just you I see many posts where people just recommend flashing pit files and they don't realize the consequences Flash At Your Own Risk!!

I did flash a pit file a few times that said it was from a 16GB i9300 but that didn't seem to change my NAND partition size. I've pretty much given up, if I have a lot of extra time on my hands in the future, I may try this whole thing again but in the end I was unsuccessful and I'm usually very persistent in troubleshooting phone issues. Thanks for the advice, everyone, though.

Completing (once and for all) swap partition method Huawei Y360

Hey all, let me just start by saying that I have searched, read, tried so much already, with so much information (specially from here) to apply a swap partition to increase ram on my phone.
Ill start from the beggining..
Phone rooted, I tried ram expander app, was a bit dissapointed because of the constant internet connection needed and the fact that after some time, my notification for ram expander (saying total memory:2048 for example) would dissapear and eventually my game crash. Maybe the swap file stopped working for some reason. Doesnt matter..
Now I am trying to set a swap partition on the phone and as far as I have been able to, this has been the only method that I have already noticed some difference.
So i started with this link : http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1934360
And up to this one: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1422061
And this last one is where I am currently at..
I have, once again, rooted phone, busybox installed, root explorer installed, terminal emulator installed.^
I have partitioned my micro sd card, that is class 10 HC1 45mb/s (Kingston) with a normal primary partition, fat32 (just like on the links, leaving space basically for 2048mb for swap partition) I created a second Linux swap partition with the leftover space (2048mb).
I havent understand fully if 2gb swap partition is too much or if I can just have 1gb (which is shame cause ram expander could go for 4gb, if it wasnt strangely working on my phone...)
Im currently stuck on step 2 of the second link..
I have the install-recovery.sh file, which everytime I try to add the code, it saves but when reopening it shows as if I didnt add no lines..
Now the rest parts I dont know what to do, besides not showing the lines added I dont know what is rebooting to recovery, I dont know what is flashing a file (in this case, init.d-autorunner-stock.zip, which I already copied to my sd) and the rest.
Basically I wanted to know if 2048mb swap partition is possible and how to get there.
I never added a custom ROM, its factory settings about ROM, but my phone does support swap. I will provide an image about this.
http://postimg.org/image/sydbst8yv/
Supposedly I only have 185mb at my disposal from swap partition? Im sure im wrong, maybe...
Please, I hope this post is acceptable and obeys the norms of this forum, like I said before I have been reading and trying so much for some days, maybe already 2 weeks now. I made this post as a last resort.
My sincere thanks ahead for everyone, maybe this can help other people aswell.
same problem
I have same problem
stuck on step 2
Reboot into Recovery and flash the init.d-autorunner-stock.zip.
idk wht is this and wht to do ??
plz help me

Two Partitions on my phone ?

Hey everyone
Here's what's happening ... I have an Samsung Galaxy SM-J500FN 2015 model phone,
a while ago I rooted it (back then it was under Android v5) ... I wanted to tweak some settings but I did something terrible, I played with KNOX.
Apparently KNOX and root don't go well together, my phone wouldn't boot anymore (rebooting loop).
Anyway, it was nothing, I just used Odin and a fresh new Official ROM (Android Marshmallow v6.0.1) and my phone was working again.
But now I discovered something, my phone is supposed to have an Internal Storage of 8GB, and that's the amount my memory settings show, but something was wrong with that, so I searched and after some time I understood that even though it said 8GB, my true storage was 4GB.
(More exactly I had 8GB but 4GB were constantly full, not even used by the system).
After a day I understood what might have happened :
My older ROM that has crashed wasn't erased when I flashed the new ROM, so now half of my Internal Storage is occupied by default meaning that I have two partitions on my phone (similar to when you install Windows and Linux on one PC).
But I cannot find any way to erase/reset my phone totally to get back those 4GB of memory.
If you have some applications, tricks, advice of some sort that could help me, I would really appreciate
Thank you for your time.

Hi, how are you sir.
Ok, first thing you should know, that if your phone is labeled as an 8GB phone then you will only get 4GB no matter what you do, now there is no way that there are 2 roms on one system partition, what may be taking the space could be old data from the old rom like in /android folder and could possibly also be media files from apps that was installed in previous rom like Facebook photos, WhatsApp videos, pics, and voice messages...etc, installing stock rom with Odin doesn't erase any files, but it completely replaces the rom in system partition with new rom.
Okay I see, thank you.
But still, I've explored that 'Android' folder a few times, checked photos, documents, everything ...
Now what I don't really understand is this :
You will only get 4GB no matter what you do

.
Why is that ? Isn't there a way to access this memory ?
BTW : I didn't flash with Rooted Stock ROM, I used an Official Android 6.0.1 ROM from Samsung's Website
EDIT : My phone when started in Recovery Mode first says "No Command" with the Android Red Error logo, then opens the recovery mode like there never was no error involved ... That's one the things that made me say that my phone definitely had some issues with my older ROM.

the reason why you will get 4 only is because the 8GB includes system partition, data partition, cache, preload (if there is one) in addition to the space taken from the formatting, it's pretty much the same like when you buy a 8GB sdcard and you get only about 7.3GB, or when you buy a 16GB phone and you only have 11.5GB for media (my case..), or when you buy a 32GB phone and you find about 8GB already taken from the phone and you get to use about 23GB for media files (my dad's case and you'll notice that in any other 32GB phone), that's what i meant, you also can check any 8GB phone and you will find that he only has 4GB for media...i hope i explained it in an easy way.
in my case i have an s2 with 16GB
i only have 11.5GB for media, and there is 512mb system partition and 512mb preload, and 2GB data partition, and small cache partition.., so that makes it about 14.5GB in total, the missing 1.5GB is due to formatting as far as i know, same as the sdcards thing i said earlier..
p.s: those partitions are unaccessible by default, they are hidden from the user, only way to access them is by rooting the phone and using a root explorer.
Yes I knew about that, but I never knew it took so much place
Thank you for your answer, I guess my phone is totally normal

Physical vs Emulated Storage, and is it backward compatible...

Hi all / @linusdan,
I wondered if any kind soul could just briefly offer their knowledge please... I've been happily flashing roms to the i9100/i9100P, N7000 for some time now, and all has been great... :good:
However my dads phone went a little screwy the other day, and so I said I would re-do it. Upon looking at it, he had a couple of storage areas of 0MB (zero) MB's and nothing could download or write to the internal storage.
I've since STOCK rom'd it, returning to the original PIT files, and tried to reset it up again. (Storage is back to normal, all fully accessible again) I've been looking at the newer roms. However in TWRP, I notice I have a SDCard0 and SDCard1 (and that's without removal storage added yet).
So I think I may a Frankenstein build of storage at moment, so re-read Linusdan's instructions, and going to totally annihilate the filesystems and start again, following the instructions.
My question is this....
Once I have done this, and moved over to fully Emulated Storage. Will this work for older roms, say KitKat / Lollipop era, or do I have to prep for stock / physical storage again? Failure to do so, would I end up with double confused storage again??
Or would simply flashing an old rom, make use of the emulated storage??
Thanks, Lister
@listerofsmeg
These days I was wondering how to do this and looking for a way to reverse the conversion.
Maybe so, but so far I have not found how.
For now, the only way to use the old ROMs is to install the stock and TWRP without emulated storage.
