Hello I got my Z Ultra a couple of months ago and now I want to root it and install custom recovery so that I can install custom roms. I'm coming from many Samsung phones and I'm not a complete noob with rooing and stuff, but it's different with the Sony. I couldn't find the thread for rooting and custom recovery. Could someone tell me how to root it, install the custom recovery, and unlock the bootloader (is that needed?) with links and stuff. Thanks in advance! :fingers-crossed:

Read the thread by LordManhattan in the general section, and the thread named towelroot. In the guide thread (not sure if it has been updated yet) just ignore the downgrade section and use the method in the towelroot thread to root, the rest is more or less the same:
Root with towelroot for xperia
Back up TA with "TA backup"
Unlock bootloader
Flash boot.img from ROM zip using flashtool or fastboot
Flash ROM from recovery that was installed in the step above
Thanks, mate!

do I lose warranty if I install a custom recovery + root with z4root + flash a custom rom on Optimus One?
thanks
Yes.
But you still can try flash back the official ROM before you send it back.
If no success then goodbye warranty (If they see it ofcourse).
Cheers
so there are no bootloader unlock to do?
[for example, I did bootloader unlock on my Nexus One (my phone... Optimus One is my girlfriend's phone)]
no news...?
You've already got your answer. Don't know what you want more.

I did another question mate...
so, can sombody confirm that the procedure to install a custom rom is the following:
- install a custom recovery
- root with z4
- install a custom rom
anything else to do? (no unlock procedure as for nexusOne?)
Second question:
wich is the procedure to flash back original recovery and original rom in case i flash something custom (recovery or rom or both)?
thanks mates
No, its all what you need for Custom ROM. Maybe - for unroot you need FW V10a(b,c) not higher.
[DEV] Custom Recovery P500/Thunderg

Hi, i've now cm9 rc and a xperia neo unlocked and root.
I would like test the official rom from sony.
Do you have a link or a method for install this without lost the advantage of root and unlocked bootloader.
If not, what's the custom rom similar (and optimised) at the official..
Thanks a lot
:good:
Check general section, find my thread with .ftf and instructions how to root.

Erm, boot(or hot boot) kernel with CWM, flash zip, restart phone. Entire process for root-ing it on unlocked BL.
btw, you can't re-lock your BL by flashing custom rom, or by doing full flash with flashtool.
Hey! Guys,
I wanted to know what are the steps to follow in-order to install a custom ROM on my xperia ray. I've read few tutorial but still I've got some questions to clarify. Just tell me whether below steps are correct.
First root the device
Unlock the boot loader
Flash a custom ROM
And if I'm installing a custom ROM on to my device I want to achieve below point too.
Want a complete back up with SMS/MMS, Apps ..etc (can be acheived via some back-up apps)
Want to take a complete copy of my current stock firmware (as a ftf file)
Any else, that I should follow which I missed here ...
I'm still curious about this.. Please advise me if I missed anything here since I'm a newbie when it comes to android rooting, flashing stuffs..

OK, root is really important  I think you should also get cwm recovery as step 2 and figure out how to use it before you unlock your boot loader. There are a bunch of ROMs in Ray Dev that are for unlocked boot loaders so you can try some things out and get comfortable flashing with cwm and/or flashtool. If you find that you like what you are doing, then unlock the boot loader. It probably will only take a day or two to figure out cwm and how flashing with cwm and flashtool work, but by then you will be a lot more comfortable with the instructions for unlocking your boot loader and you will be less likely to end up in a bad place and people will be able to help you better, since you already know how to do most of the stuff.
Thread moved. Questions belong here in Q&A.
Thanks

Asking for good roms is not allowed
There are a few MIUI roms for example or you could try MiniCMSandwich for AOSP style, just search around in development section and find your favourite!
Hello
I have a few questions about the hole "thing" cause this is my first android phone and on apple there was just the option jailbreaked or not jailbreaked
My first question is about the bootloader.
since i was reading the thread "[FULL ROOT] Community RootKit! (ASEC vulnerability) {v01} [20140615]" i am asking me why should i unlock my bootloader when im able to get root without doing this?
Is there any special point for wich i need the unlocked bootloader or is it just written for the people who unlocked there bootloader already?
Then to second question is about the sequence.
Am i right when i
1. get root
2. install cwm or twrp
3. install custom rom?
by the way: is there any huge difference between twrp and cwm? because at the table "Kernels" there is the TWRP for the Xperia T2 Ultra and an unofficial version and from CMW is an unofficial version too? Wich should i use?
and my last question is should i wait for version 2 of the RootKit or are there just small differences?

Bootloader unlock is required to install Custom kernels like DOOMLORDS kernel. In case if you dont want that then no need to unlock BL.
Just follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784757 to get root on Locked Bl and then revert back to .402

A custom ROM is different from a custom kernel. Some custom ROMs do not require custom kernels (because they use stock kernel), but others do. So it really depends on the custom ROM that you want to use. Instructions and requirements will be posted in the respective ROM thread.
But if you want to use a custom kernel, then you will need to unlock the bootloader first.
And obviously, if you want to flash a custom ROM that needs custom kernel, then you will have to unlock your bootloader first.
Even if you want to flash a custom ROM that does not require a custom kernel, you need to first root the phone with the RootKit. Because flashing custom ROMs is usually done via recovery, and recovery installation requires root.
Hope the above is not too confusing.

So just to be sure.
I Run the toolkit for root
Then i take twrp or cwm
And then i flash a custom Rom wich use stock kernel
And that can i do with a locked bootloader?

Yes, run Rootkit, install recovery (TWRP/CWM) and then you can flash custom ROM which uses stock kernel.
Custom kernels allow functions such as overclocking, undervolting, etc.

Now i know that i can keep my bootloader locked.
Take note that by modifying your device you warrenty is voided and you can posibly brick your device
(brick meaning dead phone) aka brick

Or you can use the toolkit on .55/.69
Then follow Nuts thread and http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784757
this would bring you back to .402 and have recovery installed by default on Locked bootloader

then i have 2 new questions
1. How can i downgrade my phone ? just download the fw and use flashtool?
got an iphone till now and there it was a hard work to do it ..
2. is there any difference between locked and uinlocked bootloader? i mean in the point of restoring so that i have my warranty back?
1. There's now an even easier way to root the 402 firmware that does not require you to downgrade first:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2784900
But note this post, where you have to change something in the install.bat file for it to work on the Z2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=53480221&postcount=81
2. It's a little more work if your bootloader is unlocked and you want to relock it before sending it to the service centre. You need to have your TA backup before doing so. If your bootloader is locked, you just have to remove root via SuperSU before sending it in for service.
Hello Guys.
I'm pretty new to Android customizing, and my question I believe is noob one, but I couldn't find the answer yet.
So at the moment I'm running a stock 5.1.1 (23.4.A.1.264) flashed via FTF and FlashTool, the boot loader is unlocked via FlashTool as well. DRMs are lost.
Now I'm trying to find a solution to flash CWM or TWRP recovery so I'll be able to apply a DRM fix via zip install.
I've managed to successfully flash 4.4.4, apply DooMLoRD's kernel+CWM mod and installed DRM fix zip package. But cannot do the same now as there is no DooMLoRD's kernel+CWM for 5.1.1.
Could you please advise what may be the best solution here?
Thank you in advance

Follow this simple yet tedious guide to root and flash NUTs XZDR
Thank you 5ageman!
I've seen your post on how to setup the root and recovery, but it looks not that clear to me in terms of how it works under the bonnet.
At this point I tried AndroPlusKernel (v72) and TWRM 3.0 and it looks working for me - the zip is applied and any issues observed so far.
Anyway appreciate your reply and thanks for your help to beginners.
