Yes, this long waited thread has been opened at last. Rejoice!
So this is my problem, WiFi connection suddenly drops while I'm browsing. It shows it's still connected, but no data transfer. The little arrows on the WiFi icon shows that "sending" thing occurs (it blinks) but no "receive". Sometimes this happens right after a few seconds I turn on WiFi and start browsing, sometimes a longer time later, like a few minutes or something. Sometimes in a row; I turn off my WiFi and on again for a couple of times to get it working well. Sometimes it never happens and I can browse for a long time without having an issue. But when it happens, the only way to get rid of it to go on Fast Settings on notification center where you pull it from top of screen like a drawer and turn off WiFi, wait a few seconds and turn it on again.
I have a Smartband SWR10, which means Bluetooth is always on on my Xperia Z2. Do you think it's because the 802.11n and Bluetooth signals interference with each other since they're both on the 2.4GHz band? I have a 802.11ac router at home aswell, and when I'm connected to it (5GHz signal) I don't think I had this problem.
Thanks in any advance.
Edit ---> I didn't join this site on June 2014, for sure, I'm a way older member than that. But I just did a "forgot password" procedure. Maybe this is a bug?
I have the exact same issue and I use a Smartband as well. It seems to be related to wifi on 2.4 GHz only, since I can connect to 5 GHz APs just fine. So BT interference of some sort might be a factor, yes.
Sometimes I'm connected to the AP, the status bar indicator is showing traffic, but I have no internet connection, everything just times out. Other times it takes ages to connect and get an IP from DHCP, before it finally just disconnects from the AP and returns to mobile network.
Checking logcat, there's a constant barrage of errors in wpa_supplicant when this happens:

A Google search for the error message "wapi is null" doesn't turn up much apart from a few others having that issue with the Xperia Z/ZR and in those cases it seems to be an hardware issue (although it seems to be the same person involved in all of those forum and blog posts?). That doesn't bode too well, but on the other hand, I can connect to my 5 GHz wifi AP at home and at work just fine.
I guess I should do a few tests with Bluetooth turned off. I'm pretty sure I wasn't having this issue when I first got this phone (and running SW version .55), although I can't say for certain since I can't remember exactly when this issue popped up.
Update:
Definitely related to Bluetooth in some way. I turned off Bluetooth, rebooted the phone: Wifi connected to the 2.4 GHz AP at work just fine.
Logcat and dmesg with working wifi:
Code:
06-26 13:09:43.009 1328-1328/? I/wpa_supplicant﹕ wlan0: CTRL-EVENT-SCAN-STARTED

<6>[ 118.524346] CFG80211-ERROR) wl_cfg80211_add_iw_ie : Previous IW IE is equals to current IE
OK, so the "wapi is null" and "Previous IW IE" error messages still pop up, even with working wifi. So probably not related.
Then I turned on Bluetooth, Smartband connected, and what do you know? Wifi is now instantly borked again.
Dmesg, the wl_escan errors return:
Code:
<6>[ 1310.249870] CFG80211-ERROR) wl_scan_timeout : timer expired
<6>[ 1310.250082] CFG80211-ERROR) wl_escan_handler : WLC_E_STATUS_TIMEOUT : scan_request[f0083500]

I've used the Smartband since the first day I received the phone (since it was bundled with the phone), and I can say with 99.99% certainty that this wasn't an issue to begin with. Unfortunately, I can't remember exactly when this happened first, so it's hard to track down which changes (if any) to the phone causing this. I updated from .55 to .402 at one point (.69 was never released for this phone I think?), and I've unlocked the bootloader while on .402.
There have also been at least two firmware updates for the Smartband since I started using it, no idea if that could cause any issues like this.
Update 2:
I turned off wifi and restarted the phone. When the phone powered up again, with smartband connected, I activated wifi. Now it suddenly works. No "wapi is null" errors in logcat, no wl_scan / wl_escan related dmesg entries. Could be a driver / firmware issue rather than an actual hardware issue, which is a good thing I suppose. Let's see how long it keeps working...
I had the same issue when I was connected to my 2.4Ghz channel but 5Ghz works fine. Had that problem when I was back on .55 firmware. Haven't tested if it has been fixed by the .438 FW yet.

Hey, guess what? I was having this problem all throughout the last couple of days (wifi would be a pain to connect and when it did, it might as well not be connected at all) and you'll never guess what solved it... Yes, just like above, I turned off wifi (keeping bluetooth on - I also have the SmartBand on from day one) and when the phone powered up again, wifi turned itself on (location based), but it worked as it should - no problems at all.
I'm guessing this is really a driver/software issue. Really hope the 4.4.4 update solves it...
No need to restart the phone, just enable airplane mode a few seconds and disable it. Wifi will work again.
I seem to have fixed my issue by restoring the factory settings on my modem/router and resetting it.

Yeah, I haven't had this issue in weeks now, so it's definitely down to softwware and/or drivers.
new update! 17.1.2.A.0.314 ! wifi fixed or not?!
Its not 4.4.3/4 which 4.4.2 seems to have the bug, we will have to see if someome flashes the firmware

This bug was caused by the extended standby feature of stamina mode. After turn it off i don't have any issue with wifi anymore

Weirdly, yes - this worked for me as well. I was getting amazing wifi speeds, even after rooting the phone... then last night, it just stopped. Same problem: strong signal, connected...but no internet. (DNS problem, maybe?)
Doing what was suggested above: turning off wifi, rebooting, turning on wifi "corrected" the problem. So, some cache somewhere was cleared out by this action - or some sort of collision between the wifi chip and something else on the phone occurred during one of the reboot cycles.
Either way, it's weird - and I hate weird. Gonna keep my eye on this.... but thank you for the suggestion, man - worked great.
Are you all using smartband or BT hands-free?
I have this problem only on wifi and only when my BT is in (smartband connected)
Few times per day I have to activate airplane mod to reset wifi connection.
But when my BT is off - there's no problems at all...
I really hope that Sony will find a way to "fix" or set (maybe better word) BT and wifi combo...

I've had wifi issues for a while, it never even crossed my mind it could be my smartband. It really annoyed me this morning so I looked into it and found this thread. I wish they'd fix it soon. It's irritating. :/
Same problem here but no smart watch
Same problem here but I don't have blue tooth on or use that Smartband. Same trick solves the issue tho.
Cheers, Bentree
Can anyone confirm if the 4.4.4 firmware has fixed this bug? Still waiting for my countries firmware update but I am hoping it is resolved...
Wi-Fi
Hey Guus,
I have the same issue with Wi-Fi connection. Also on 4.4.4, it drives me crazy . Only what helps sometimes is turning Wi-Fi off ----> Wi-Fi on.
Hope that anyone knows how to solve this problem very soon.

Ok all here is my problem and I know there many more suffering from this:
Connecting to the internet from my Hero works fine on 2G (GPRS) and Wi-Fi, but is very unstable on 3G (UMTS) and H (HSDPA).
By starting a thread, I want to get to an answer as to WHY this is happening and hopefully find a solution
My problem started around the time I started using custom 2.1 (or radio) ROMs, but I am not sure whether flashing those is actually the cause. I have a SIM unlocked Hero and an unlimited data plan with T-Mobile Netherlands (called Web 'n' Walk Plus @ 1 Mbit/s down, 384 Kbit/s up). I had no problem on the stock 1.5 ROM/radio.
Symptoms:
Whenever an app is making a server request, the 3G icon starts blinking the up arrow, shortly followed by the H icon blinking the up arrow, indicating the request is made.
When all is well, the response is received and communication is quick and smooth. Most of the time though, the phone continues making requests but no response is received and the application reports a network error/timeout. This happens while signal strength is max (4 bars).
Ping test:
Enter *#*#INFO#*#* in the phone dialpad and select Phone Information, press the "Run ping test" button.
- The line "Ping IpAddr" reports: "Fail: IP addr not reachable";
- The line "Ping Hostname(www.google.com)" reports: "Fail: Host unreachable";
- The line "HTTP Client test" reports: "Fail: IOException".
The preferred network type is "WCDMA preferred", as set in the lower part of the same screen.
Note: WCDMA is an air interface standard used for UMTS and the like and is not related to CDMA, which is the mobile access technology used in the USA as opposed to GSM, which is used everywhere else in the world.
The thing is though, that the connection does not seem to fall back to 2G but rather experiences a timeout.
FWIW: the Phone Information screen reports a signal strength of -dBm, 25 asu.
Tried:
- Flashing various ROMs to spot any difference, none found.
- Flashing newer radio ROM (JU instead of EU), no luck.
It is here when I first start posting about it:

UPDATE: Apparent solution for T-Mobile 3G problems:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=595108
Fix includes settings as proposed by adwinp below.
Explanation of some settings: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=5123531&postcount=46
UPDATE 2:
Well, my problems have vanished "as snow in the sun" (old Dutch proverb)!
Applying the latest radio (JU) and the settings as mentioned by adwinp below made my 3G connection fly again, steady and smooth. Thanks adwinp!
How to modify your build.prop file:
1) Connect your handset via USB, make sure USB debugging is enabled
2) From the Android SDK > tools directory, type the following:
Code:
# adb pull /system/build.prop ~/build.prop
3) Open the file with your favorite editor and append the following lines:
Code:
ro.ril.enable.dtm=1
ro.ril.hep=1
ro.ril.hsxpa=2 #for USA, use 1
ro.ril.gprsclass=12 #for USA, use 10
ro.ril.enable.a52=1
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 28
ro.ril.hsupa.category = 7
Save the file. Next:
Code:
# adb remount
# adb push ~/build.prop /system/build.prop
# adb reboot
Some sources claim that a second reboot is necessary, check this for yourself.
Good luck!
UPDATE 3:
Seems my joy was short lived; could be that just rebooting was a temporary fix and a good old placebo effect, since I already experienced connection loss again. Sigh. Anyone else with a good idea?
UPDATE 4:
Could this be an MTU issue, like stated here or here? I'd like to know the methods of changing the MTU for 3G, investigating now.
UPDATE 5:
None of the theories above seem to be plausible. Looks like T-Mobile/Orange is the culprit here. Further reading here: https://t-mobile-forum.pocketinfo.nl/showthread.php?p=725207#last (in dutch)
You have either a
1: physical problem with the handset
2: network problem (check if other ppl within the same network have the same problem)
Try playing with these values in /system/build.prop
ro.ril.enable.dtm = 1 # you might want to disable this one, although it doesn't hurt
ro.ril.hep = 1
ro.ril.hsxpa=2
ro.ril.gprsclass=12
ro.ril.enable.a52=1
ro.ril.enable.a53=1
ro.ril.hsdpa.category = 28
ro.ril.hsupa.category = 7
# Default network type 0 => WCDMA Preferred.
ro.telephony.default_network = 0
These settings come from my ROM, which has been tested on various networks in Poland, Germany and Mauritius.
3G performance is flawless.
I have been having this very same problem, and I know others have too. it is strange but has only happened since the newer 2.1 builds have been out.
After lengthy conversations with the high technical team at Orange UK they diagnosed my problem as for some reason the phone is trying to connect to two 3g radio towers at the same time (usually should connect to only one) basically this is confusing the phone.
What the fix seems to be is:
- *#*#4636#*#*
- phone options
- ping test (will probably fail)
- change to "GSM ONLY" - for 30 seconds or more NOT LESS!!
- ping test (should succeed)
- then change back to "WCDMA Only" or "preferred"
- ping again (should now work)
If this does not fix it then you have two more options
- take the sim out the phone for 30 seconds (this is the minimum required time to disconnect your phone from the towers your on)
- OR airplane mode for 30 seconds.
Then try the above again and all should be working.

Do you have any reference information for these settings? I'll try to look it up myself but I can't fiddle with them unless I know what the possible values are and at least know what each setting is used for

Interesting reason; you think this could be related to the fact that the latest VillainROMs stem from CDMA ROMs? What I still don't get is that speech and GPRS traffic are unaffected, these just work.
I already tried your fixes several times but for me they don't work everytime. Ah well, hopefully the official 2.1 update does some good here

I don't think a CDMA source is the issue here.
I've ported a CDMA to GSM with no problem whatsoever.
You could always try replacing libreference-cdma-sms.so, libreference-ril.so, libril.so and libhtc_ril.so from a GSM ROM.
Im also on T-mobile NL with unlimited web n walk
i dont have that issue, and i am currently on aHero 0.7 with latest radio,
also havent encountered the problem on other 2.1 roms
i hope this is some additional information
I always run into this problem as well on all of the 2.1 ROMS pretty much. I'm on the 3 network in the UK. Basically I never had this problem with any of the modaco 1.5 ROMS.
Awesome. Thankyou!
This has fixed my annoying 3G issues, Exactly as you describe.
What exactly is the solution?
Update 2 - First post.
Previously browsing maps would stall and the "up" arrow be stuck on, with the "down" one empty. I say maps, but anything really that uses the data connection. Most often going into Airplane mode and back again fixed it. Now it just works, and quickly too.
BTW - I'm on orange UK.

So just adb those values into the build.prop file and now everything is fine?
Yep. Thats basically all I did, I did a remount, pulled the build prob to my local, edited it, then pushed it back.
First reboot then I had connectivity, but the status bar showed it not being registered on the network. Second reboot and it was all good. A consitent 3G/H signal and no stalling of data transfers.

I edited my OP, since I experienced connection loss again. How is it holding up for you?
Great topic J0bro.
I am having exactly the same problems as you describe. I was just searching the web since at first i couldn't find anything usefull here. I just went back to see if there were some new rom updates and i saw this topic.
I am now running villain 5.2 and latest radio. I was already experiencing the same probs a while back but not as much as i am now. It seems that when I try to open an app on the market i get a lot of connection errors. The switching between the 3g and H takes too long and times out.
I now have a stream running on stream live radio and that uses my H connection. Once it is continuously using H it seems just fine......
Strike that italic part.... When i was typing that it disconnected went back to 3G and lost connection. Now its switching back and forth between 3G and H
Damn this sucks man. I will try the part of of the build.prop....
Pff and i just got my debricked hero back
FYI I am on t-mobile NL with web n walk plus
Did you try replacing the ril libs I mentioned in /system/lib ?
Did you test this in another city?

Just put it underneath the rest in the build.prop and rebooted twice.
Did I do that right?
Hi there which 2.1 Rom did u try?
On tmobile UK and had same 3g problem with stock rom but its fixed now. Only been testing with villainroms. Version 3.4 and 5 beta2 works perfect, the legend based one doesn't work and has same 3g problems. So its probrqbly not universal across 2.1 roms

I have a problem on my HTC HD2 (Energy Rom : 07/28/10; Radio : 2.12.50.02_2) with 3G/HSDPA connection.
Sometimes it disconnect and I need to reboot (or switch to "airplane mode" then switch on again "phone mode") to make it works again.
It seems that it disconnect faster if I download much data (for instance if I only check my emails every 5 minutes it won't disconnect for 2-5 hours but if run StreamTVLive or Wifi router it will disconnect after only 60 seconds...
When it disconnect, I still have HSDPA icon ("H" icon) but I have the following error message "cannot connect for unknown reason... tap settings or dismiss".
I tried many Energy roms and 2.7 and 2.12 radios but I still have same problem (I have french operator named "Bouygues Telecom" with (almost) unlimited 3G data connection) and now I don't know what to do
I think It does not depends on signal quality from my operator because I have the same problem in many cities in France...
Anyone could help me ? Thanks !
Let's face some of these "stable" roms are not that when cooked. There are issues out there or is it just that windows mobile is a POS?

Many people successfully solved using radio 2.10.50.28_2
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=614119&highlight=telstra
i have had the same problem for months, ever since i went to wisconsin back in may. i started getting data errors up there & theyve persisted even through several hard resets. ive even tried flashing to the radio tedd mentioned. it helped a bit, but i still have to manually connect to data 4 or 5 times a day. its the one & only major issue ive had with this phone.
Since yesterday my phone keeps losing it's signal. I'm having full signal, and one second later it switches to no signal, (a `x` next to the signal bars). This takes about 10 seconds. Then it has signal again for about 13 seconds, again full signal. This keeps repeating.
In the status menu it also says "Service state: Out of service" when it loses signal.
Short version: my phone keeps switching signal/no signal about 4 times a minute.
I tried some things myself, but no difference:
Tried on multiple locations (on all of them normally i would have normal signal strength)
Rebooted the phone
Reflashed the phone
Flashed another modem
Ejected sim and cleaned it

What's also interesting, when i had signal i tried to make a call, the first couple of times i tested that my call would drop after a few seconds (the moment my phone lost signal) but later on when i tested that, the signal stayed on nicely for 2 minutes while on the call. The moment i stop the call, my signal is hickupping again! Really weird!
I'm desperate, i can't find the problem. Could it be hardware? In my opinion it looks too weird to be hardware, but what do you guys think. Can you help me? Thank you!
Try flashing modem again. Check the modem thread for your correct version.

Until today i was on the stock baseband i9100xxlpw. If i'm not mistaken, my phone was boxed with this baseband.
Today i replaced it with I9100BOLP5.
My old baseband always worked fine until today. Could that be the problem?

well suggest u to reflash back ur old modem(I9100XXLPW) and then check for the same issue
u can find the same in link below, dwnld and flash thro recovery, reboot phone and see
Modem Collection
I'm having a similar issue http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1768392. But mine happens just once a day, but everyday nonetheless for the last 8 days.
Done that, now i'm back to my XXLPW radio. Still no difference, again no more then 13 seconds signal before it dies for a moment again.

If you're having issues even on your stock rom/radio then it sounds like you have a hardware problem.
Does it do this just at home or is it elsewhere aswell? if its just at home/area then it could be some sort of interference maybe, just a guess. If its in all areas and your re-stocked and got same issue I would send it back to Samsung. (Make sure you reset binary counter).
You're not experiencing signal drop, but constant unregistering from carrier. It may be SIM problem.

This seems like a very likely explanation, but how can this happen all of a sudden, when everything was all fine & dandy earlier?
Unfortunately, I have no idea.
that seems likely yes. But what can i do? I tried my sim card in another phone, it works fine. I tried another sim in my galaxy S2, it had the same problem. So it's not the sim and probably not the carrier.
Another notable point, i called *#*#4636#*#* and went to phone status.
What cought my eye is this: i can select which mode i want (gsm only, gsm auto, wcdma auto, etcetera). When i have no signal, it says unknown. When it gets signal again, it says WCDMA auto.
What to do, what to try? I'll try everything!
update: I disassembled the phone, i reconnected all the cables, i even replaced the backpanel (which holds the speaker, and i guess/hoped some more electronics). Then it looked for a second that things were better, but i'm mistaken... i'm still losing signal constantly!
This may sound stupid but have you done a FULL wipe, and re install of stock firmware? It worked for me & another guy too, & it is not related to modem getting corrupt because changing the modem didn't make any difference. A full fresh install of firmware is required, in my case I tried CM9. But I did notice my APN settings were different from stock. Anyways try using your phone on GSM mode only & not WCDMA for a while with data off.

u can try other sim and can check if it works or not
Weirdest thing. Kept my phone on charger and off this night. This morning i turned it on, and it lost signal a couple of times. After a little while though, it got better and now it's working fine with no signal drops. Average no signal percentage today is 4% at this moment. In comparison, yesterday it was 87%...
So weirdly enough, it looks to be fixed for now... but for how long and why, i ask...
You never know it could have been a network thing! That is if you haven't faced it again.
So, a bit later and it's still present. Sometimes it works fine for a full day and then all of a sudden, it drops signal again. Sometimes a few times, sometimes only once. And in some occasions it does not come back.
When i do a reboot, signal is back and fine again (but also sometimes it's still giving some problems).
In this example, signal was ok. After a while i lost signal, and it did not come back up (i waited about 10 minutes for it to come back). then, i reboot and the signal is back again.
As i'm hearing, i'm also not the only one.... What could be this problem? I'm desperate!

I'm still looking into the problem. I'm finding it hard to find a solution. I've tried going back to full stock. Changing the modem, changing the RIL. I updated with KIES. But nothing so far, still the same problems. And now i'm looking at the system logs with logcat.
I found something that is weird. Around the moment it loses signal this is my status log:

Can anyone see something weird here?
Anybody have any issues with wifi?
My XZ2 will often time out trying to get an ip address from my router, or it will connect with a strong signal but be marked as limited connectivity (basically rendering the tablet offline).
Most times a reboot of the XZ2 resolves it but it is a bit of a ball ache.
Never have this issue with any of the various wifi devices we use in the house.
TIA.
Me too. After the tablet has been on for a while and has gone to sleep and been woken a few times it will not reconnect to my wifi. A reboot will fix it
I've tried using static IP settings and not had the issue again yet. Everything else on the network works fine.
That's exactly the same here. Oh well. It's not that bad that I want to return it but it is a pain.
I used to have the problem with my old Xperia tablet S, and it only happened when wifi was set to stay on during device sleep. The problem went away when I set wifi to turn off when device sleeps.
Haven't had this issue on Z2 tablet. Have you tried toggling wifi optimization in advanced wifi settings? Toggled extended standby in stamina mode settings? Disabled any system apps that may affect wifi connectivity?
I have stamina mode turn wifi off during sleep. I've always had my Android devices set to turn it off when sleeping and won't be changing that as it's just a waste of energy. I assume this is a software error that Sony will eventually fix.
Which firmware version do you guys have?
IIRC I had that with the firmware that it came with (17.1.A.2.36)
Settings | Wifi
switch to the right. After a while it just switches back off?
Fixed for me with firmware 17.1.1.A.0.402 (SGP511).

Latest official. It doesn't turn off it just fails to gain a proper connection.
Can see the WiFi connection active.
Sometimes with flashing upload arrow but no active download arrow. Sometimes active but with a yellow exclamation mark (limited connectivity).
A reboot of tablet usually cures it.

Using any proxy? Vpn? Ad blocker? Any app that specifically targets the connection?
Try setting the WiFi to always stay on to see if that makes a difference? (not talking about the stamina mode option, but the option in advanced wifi settings) (maybe the two options don't cooperate so well)

I come from Italy and I updated my device on March, as everyone, I think. My device is now perfect except the wifi. The wifi disconnect during the stanby and it connects only using the static mode. I also have this problem even if I changed the wifi option for the stanby in "always". Another strange thing is that the wifi is reported as one of the main cause of consumption, as it is shown in the screeshot
I'm having WiFi issues as well since MM. It's set to Active on Sleep, but whenever I wake my tablet, it's disconnected and having much difficulties to re-connect.
I assumed it was some Xposed thing I'm running, haven't tested it 'clean'. Also, I'm on AndroPlusKernel v22. Not v22a yet.

Hi,
For the static mode try to change the DHCP client in the setting->developpers option.
Where are the developper options?

Same problem here
Version .163
Stock kernel
Wifi standby settings to "always"
5Ghz wifi
Sometimes (not always) wifi disconnected after standby
DHCP working here
Maybe it is linked to wifi router problems during standby. I had wifi problems already before MM (! sign at wifi symbol). Maybe the difference now is that it isn't reconnecting in standby anymore after wifi failure. But just a guess...
At least it's not how option "always" should work...

Hi,
Maybe it's related to your router lease time that send a new DHCP address after lease time. Check if the lease time is set to "permanent"

Thanks for reply. It's set to three weeks, so not the reason.
(But even then it must renew the lease and not stop the wifi.)
I'll get new router soon, let's see if something changes...

I have the same issue but I actually have the turn off wifi in sleep enabled but it still shows up that its being used in sleep when I look at battery
The problem:?*
I connect it to the Wi-Fi and it works fine for about 5 minutes. As I'm watching YouTube videos every 5 minutes the video pauses and starts to buffer until it eventually say connection lost. Meanwhile the tablet still claims that Wi-Fi is still connected and with full connection. This also happens with web pages and apps that require and internet connection.
Temporary fix:
Turning Wi-Fi off and back on again fixes it, but only for a few minutes.
What have I tried to fix it?
I've tried everything from a factory reset to a software repair.
OS: Android 6.0 (Marshmallow)?*
Build Number: 32.1.A.1.185
Any help would be much appreciated. Thanks in advanced.

Same I was having it on lollipop too. They told me to send it in for repair but I just ignored them cuz there's no point. It's a software issue not a hardware issue. They're not going to find anything wrong with my tablet. It's in perfect condition.

???? Na bro you're hardware is most likely perfectly fine. Sony just needs to fix the software and we're good.
