New to S5: Update to nf6? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

Hello, I recently got my s5,had rooted with towelroot, then updated with kies to ne6,then rerooted again so I can have my titanium backup back. Question is, should I install the nf6 update and lose root, I am not in a location for the volte coverage, I am near Tampa fl. From what I understand it's mainly for this volte coverage.

There is a way to update to nf6 and keep root. Read it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2790292
You'll never know when your area will have volte coverage.

Now, I'm coming from Verizon service and have had a Droid Bionic and Razr m both 4g of course, what is the voice over LTE, what are the pros and cons, never heard of it before.
Also, for the record I am not new to modding and tinkering, first rooted and themed on Droid x2,then the Bionic, then had my Razr m bootloader unlocked. Not a total newb to this, just to T-Mobile and the s5

Well from what I see, the different in the new update is when you make the voice call, the signal still show 4g lte instead of drop down to 4g in the previous firmware. Also in the settings for calls you have the option to turn on/off volte. Other than that, I don't see any different on the phone operation wise.

If you do the update, make sure to wipe the cache after.
My battery life was terrible after the update until I cleared the cache.
Now it is better than ever.

Thanks guys, appreciate the info

VoLTE means the network does not drop down to the slower 4G network and will remain on LTE. You will have faster internet speeds when on a call. Also it may help slightly with call clarity, but I don't notice the difference.
Also just FYI: In Tampa FL they rolled out wideband LTE so you can get faster data speeds on t-mobile now in that area. I'm in the Ft. Lauderdale area and it's not listed as a VoLTE area but VoLTE works.

Mobile internet connection randomly goes out

I just got my Droid RAZR 2 days ago. For some reason, the 4G LTE randomly drops out. Sometimes, it won't even come back on at all and I have to reboot the phone to get my connection back. I have service because I still get text messages and phone calls. This is getting really annoying, especially when I'm out and about and away from my home Wi-Fi.
I have already downloaded and installed the connectivity restore app from Verizon's Play Store page, but it didn't help. Any other suggestions?

Its a problem with all 4g phones. (Or so i have heard)
I would love to have someone prove me wrong on this though.

I just had this exact same thing happen to me. I'm in Anaheim, CA. Figured it was a network outage, of course Verizon always denies any outages just like Sprint did for 3 years.
Eventually, after about 1 hour, 5 reboots and that connectivity app, it just came back on.
Who knows..

Yep, appears so. Back to 3G now lol..
Got my Maxx about a week ago. I also have a similar (or maybe the same) situation where the 4G LTE icon turns white, but there is no data connection (WiFi off). I did some searching online and found that apparently a lot of Verizon LTE phones have the same problem, so I don't know whether this is a software or hardware problem. However, I did see that many people got their phone to get the connection back with a CDMA/LTE toggle on/off (found in Settings). Hopefully Verizon is working on an update for this.
I think, from what I've observed, it has trouble switching from 3G to 4G and vice-versa. At home, I'm right on the edge of a 4G area, so my phone constantly switches back and forth between 3G and 4G. That's when the data drops. When I have solid 4G connection, the data doesn't drop.

Welcome to Verizon LTE.
It's a problem with the handshake protocol from eHRPD to LTE. Not likely to be fixed entirely until Verizon rolls out an LTE-Advanced network and phases out CDMA altogether.

It's not all bad news. The newer phones timeout much less when trying to hold connection and authenticate faster than the first-gens (Charge, Tbolt, etc), and even better than they did at launch (in the case of the Bionic, for example, which uses the same Moto Wrigley 4G chip as the Razr and others). It'll only get better with successive releases.

Stop me from jumping....

I just sold my HTC Rezound and got my Razr Maxx from someone locally only about 5 days ago. In short, I miss my Rezound.
Before anyone jumps down my throat, let me explain. I am basing this solely off my experience at work where I spend 40+ hours of my week. Other than that, I really like this phone and want it to work out for me.
In my office here at work, I have always had bad reception with Verizon, regardless of the phone. It's just the way that this building is and the fact that there isn't a Verizon tower close enough to get good reception. Supposedly they are going to install a Verizon tower in our parking lot, but who knows when or if that will really happen.
With that being said, my Rezound held 4G for most of the day, albeit barely. But it did for most of my day and when it dropped 4G, the transition to 3G was pretty seamless.
With my Maxx, I am having major problems holding 4G or connectivity at all several times throughout my work day. If I open the Play Store or apps like Facebook, it will say no connection even when the 4G icon is visible. Then it will turn white at times too.
To its credit, I get good reception outside of work and at home which is true for every Verizon phone that I have owned (Incredible, Thunderbolt, Charge, Rezound).
So what gives? Without going back to a Rezound, what are my other options? The Nexus is much worse in this department correct?
Any advice would help, thanks!
Nexus is horrible in reception department. I know exactly what you mean with the white 4G no connection issue. I get it all the time too...even with 4G showing full bars. Also when I open the browser its just white and froze.

So, it's not just me? LOL
It's getting pretty ridiculous. Today I can barely do anything with it at work, it's not holding much of anything.
Is this a known network issue? Because if not, I will have to dump this phone unfortunately.
Yeah I don't know if it's the battery or what but 4G reception seems hit or miss on my Razr Maxx, it usually works great but in fringe areas it's shakier than I'd like.
That said, I use my office's wifi (where 4G reception sucks) and keep my phone on 3G unless I need to download things. So it isn't a huge issue.
I can't go back to a smaller battery, though.
Just as an update, the reception is embarrassingly bad today. I can't connect to anything data related. Connection keeps going in and out.
My Rezound would connect to everything daily. Only problem is that I don't want another Rezound lol.
Decisions, decisions....
the nexus has horrible signal issues, don't get one. as far as the maxx and signal/4g i get 10x better signal strength than i had with my rezound or nexus. if you want, install the .209 ics leak. it gave me much better 4g reception and speeds.
could also be you just do not have good verizon service where you are and no phone will fix that.

I definitely don't have good Verizon service where my office is located as I said in the OP. But, even with that said, my Rezound always held a data connection, and mostly 4G at that.
I have no idea why this phone with supposed better radios can't match that. It's very, very disheartening.
I will try the ICS leak. Is the .209 one the one where you can't go back to stock if you wanted to? That might be an issue for me.
Thanks!

There is none that they know of. I went into a Verizon store tonight and they installed a new sim for me.
I have had strong signal since then, but I'm not at work and I usually get good signal at home.
If I don't have good signal tomorrow at work I will just have to face the sad reality that this phone won't play nice at work. Then I will have to make a decision from there.

Have you tried simply turning 4G off? Basically, go to the network settings and turn it to CDMA only, instead of CDMA+LTE. 2-3 bars of 3G is better than 0-1 bars of 4G. At least while you're at work.
Are you sure it's not a defective unit?

I keep awaiting for bootloader unlock for razr and atrix 2,maybe custom kernel will do some trick on signal to keep hold on 3g although it's only 1 or 2 bar. Because from my experience, motorola will get no connectivity when it drop to 2 or 1 bar of 3g.

That's is the stupid idea that i did to get the phone hold on 3g,and if you read our atrix2 forum, most of us got a bad data connectivity.

It might possibly be, but I'm not leaning towards that as I'm getting good reception and connection at home.
It's only happening at work where nobody gets good Verizon signal to begin with. Only problem is my rezound was holding enough signal and not dropping but this phone is dropping.
My conclusion so far is that the rezound holds weak signals better and the MAXX just drops them.

.211 - 4G only?

Installed the .211 leak last night. I normally keep my phone on 3G to save my battery unless I need 4G.
I just went to change my connection and all I can choose from is Global or CDMA/LTE.
Can you not run CDMA without LTE on the latest leak?

Try setting it manually:
Dial *#*#4636*#*#
Or install phone info app from google play
Go to phone info and in network menu change to cdma only and see if it works.
If not, back to your previous setup. Just make sure you get note of it before playing around.

I tried to set it in the network menu, but my only options are to choose from "Global" or "CDMA/LTE"
It looks like verizon has done away with letting the user choose from 3G or LTE.
I'm pretty upset with that considering my battery won't make it through half a day unless I'm on 3G...
If I dial that number, will that put me on 3G only? I'm on LTE, I just prefer CDMA for battery conservation.

Yikes! I hope that's fixed on the OTA! I'm always in a 4G/LTE area, but run CDMA 99% of the time because LTE will drain my battery in under 6hours. On 3G/CDMA, I can usually get 14-16 hours. Glad I just bought an external 1800mAh battery pack.
I'm using the app called "phone info" that was suggested earlier in this thread.
App works great and let's we switch to cdma only without a hitch, and but lte in enabled when I reboot my phone.
I also hope that this minor issue is corrected in the final product version. My phone will drain in a matter of about two or three hours of LTE the way I use it.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA
to make life even easier, download an app called minimalistic text. Once downloaded use it to create your our 3G/4G widget that once clicked on launches the phone info app, seems to work alright for the time being. but a dedicated 3g/4g switch would be great i dont see how something like this could be overlooked by moto/verizon
Just want to note that I'm having the same issue. I cannot find a way to turn off 4g, I tried dialing the 4636 number and it actually dialed the phone rather than launching the config menu. I'd like to be able to disable 4g at times since I am often in an area without 4g.

Signal strength after ota ics update.

I'm not sure if its how ics reports the signal or what but my bars have went from full signal to 1 to 2 bars at most. Anyone else experience this?
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA
I've actually had an increase in signal changing to the gsm leak. On gb it would drop both cell and wifi connection. Now it drops maybe once a day instead of every half hour.
Sent from my XT910 using xda premium
It seems my signal is not as good either.
I'm curious, because I've seen this explanation before, but is the signal worse...or does it only appear to be worse...meaning are the bars now more accurate?
My house is not in a 4g area yet, my 3g speeds are horrid now after the update. I will say i cant see how when im in town and near a tower I am only showing 1 to 2 bars and my db is HIGH like 99-106.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA
I can see one 4g and a 3g tower from my house and know there are 2 more within 5 miles and my signal appears to be lower also.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using Tapatalk 2
You are not alone...I was wondering the same thing myself...signal went to crap after the update!
My signal is lower, but I think its because I never had as good of signal as gb said. Floating between 3-4 bars while on gb it was full at the same location.
Sent from my DROID RAZR using XDA
Mine is lower too. Theres been some talk about the radio in the newer leaks but I can't quite piece together what exactly is the deal.
Signal is the same. Ics just reports the signal differently. I forgot the article that explained it but if I can find it I'll link it

Well, someone who got the OTA clicked "update later" after it was "pushed" to him and had been downloaded. He might have been a "soak tester", I don't know. But anyways, after he downloaded and chose the "update later" option, he then proceeded to find the file in his phone and uploaded it. You guys probably have heard of it on the "droid forums" but I'm one of the ones who downloaded it and applied the update via "update from SD card" and personally, my signal strength seems better. I was having issues with the 4g vanishing and turning from blue to white as various data driven apps would say "there appears to be no connection, please try again later". Well, I've only had this for just over 24 hours, but I've worked eight hours which is where I usually have the issue the most and didn't have one single time at work last night. Just sharing my story..... (as it is for the moment at least) lol
Definitely an improvement, before my 4g was dropping out constantly. Now it's stable with only 3 bars who cares I still get fast LTE speeds.

Thanks for the link...great read and seems to explain away the issue I thought I was having.
This rings very similar to the Verizon Galaxy Nexus.
ICS does use a different algorithm to measure signal strength. Personally, I feel there is something wrong with the driver set that the manufacturers are having a problem fixing. If I end up having the same issues on my Razr that I had on my Nexus I will be flashing it back to 2.3.6.

I don't care about the signal bars since they have no real meaning. I had little to no service on my Nexus and I live less than a mile away from a Verizon 4G LTE tower. Verizon kept saying it was just the signal bars showed differently and couldn't figure out that I actually had no service. What I am saying is that if with this ICS update comes the same set of connectivity problems that I had with the Nexus, I will flash back to GB.
I gave up on the Nexus because it had poor signal strength period. With the Maxx, signal strength has been very good for me with 2.3 and 4.04.

I have Cricket Wireless also and signal bars can be deceiving, but also have similar issue. On my DNA with Cricket 3-4 bars, while on my G2 with Cricket I get usually 5 full bars at home. I don't see this being an issue at all because the service work good on both phones. No dropped calls or bad data.
If I were you I wouldn't worry about it much unless your getting call or data issues. Also are you on the latest firmware on your DNA and or when is that last time you've updated your dna firmware if ever.
