[q] installation of c6802 rom in c6806 and c6833 - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

While making a small research I have understood that different X Ultra works as below:
C6833 Works on all networks INCLUDING 4G LTE for T-Mobile as this uses BAND 4
C6806 Works on all networks INCLUDING 4G LTE for T-Mobile and AT&T
C6802 Works on all networks EXCLUDING 4G LTE
I have C6802, and I want to understand if I flash C6806 or C6833 rom on my C6802, will there be any malfunction, or bricking of my Mobile.

If the ROM doesn't cause a brick when flashing on the device it was developed for, it won't brick any of the other 2.
A ROM developed for an LTE version will work on the C6802, it will display options for LTE, but cannot connect to any LTE network due to the lack of hardware.
A ROM developed for the C6802 will work on the C6833 or C6806 but will not connect to any LTE network due to the lack of code to do so.
Just make sure that the ROM is not for the Google Play Edition (togari_gpe)

It would be very unfortunate with a branded Ultra since it would mean a crippled device with a crippled radio.
The C6806 standard edition offers both AT&T, T-Mobile and European bands (some slight differences there though, the 6806 has the 700 and the 6833 the 800 band).
So an unlocked C6806 is great but if Sony let a carrier fiddle with it, I guess that a couple of LTE bands will be removed (see what T-Mobile did with the Xperia Z C6606).
The best solution would be that Sony sells the Ultra unlocked through Sony Store - the C6806 that is. AT&T et al branding, bloatware and locked bootloader would destroy a magnificent device.
coming from a LTE ATT device to this, i can tell you, I DO NOT EVEN MISS LTE. for music,youtube,web,email,fb,cloud storage i do not see any difference
I was originally on the galaxy S3 with LTE, and switched over to a note 2 unlocked non LTE and sure, my speedtest scores aren't as high, and my downloads aren't as fast, but unless you're visiting some super graphic heavy site, it's not a huge diff. Plus LTE drains battery faster I believe. On a battery draining device such as the Ultra, you definitely won't want LTE constantly draining the battery. Especially if you're not on unlimited data.
I wish the C6806 was sold unlocked, but that's probably the Tmo version - which means they'll lock out a certain LTE band (700)

For what it's worth, Negri also had the Xperia Z NAM edition (6606) up for pre-order, and that is nowhere to be found except on T-Mobile.
I hope I'm wrong, but with Sony signing an agreement w/ TMo, I don't expect LTE devices to be sold unlocked by them in the US anytime soon.
The positive side is that if the C6806 is destroyed by a carrier, the C6833 will work in the US since it has the T-Mobile bands and can use AT&T albeit without the 700 band.
So an option in a worst case scenario is to get the C6833 imported for those that demand LTE.
Unlike the Xperia Z, the C6806 and C6833 are pentaband like the C6802 and offers LTE in addition. The C6833 should therefore be an adequate option for US customers if the C6806 is messed up.
I am still hoping that Sony will sell the C6806 unlocked in the Sony Store but the C6833 is a perfectly adequate option.
Personally, the lack of VoLTE made me skip the LTE versions in favor of the C6802. Streaming videos etc isn't really an option on US capped plans and the HSPA+ speeds I got on the 6802 is very adequate for browsing, navigation, picture uploads etc.
I dunno, with the cost of C6833, I'd like the ability to use LTE with ATT.
It's kind of a no-win situation, since the C6833 will be available unlocked but without the 700 band, and the C6806 will be available but gimped.

Sony sold the Xperia ZL LTE unlocked on their website, they might do the same for this phone as well, at least i hope that's going to be the case.

It's rumored that Tmo might pick it up, since they have a exclusivity deal with Sony. Just speculation.

Correct - I have a Lumia 1020 and the Ultra Z C6802 on ATT. Here's some speedtests for you:
Ultra Z in HSPA (not even HSPA+) is getting 6Mb down, 2 Mb up
1020 in LTE gets 15Mb down, 11 Mb up
Despite the desparity, I don't notice that much difference in surfing. - not to mention the Z feels the fastest of any device used since the original Moto Xoom overclocked to 2GHz

I ran a SpeedTest yesterday and got a download of 8.3 Mbit/s on the AT&T network with HSPA+ and Straight Talk. A few minutes before, I ran another SpeedTest on the new Motorola Droid Razr Ultra and got... 3.5 Mbit/s - that's on Verizon 4G LTE.
So I am certainly very happy with the speeds I got on the Ultra in the center of Manhattan (the tests has been made near Grand Central).

That's interesting... Looks like the C6833 is MUCH more compatible with North American frequencies than the C6603 was.
C6603 (Euro LTE Xperia Z) lacked UMTS1700 and UMTS1900 support, which meant no 3G at all on T-Mo and 3G only where AT&T had UMTS850 service.

Sony took the decision to use a top notch LTE radio in order to overcome the old limitations that plagued LTE devices until now. The only thing I don't like is the lack of VoLTE and it is one of the reasons why I went with the C6802 instead of following the original C6833 plan.
The only band missing on the C6833 is the 700 one, otherwise it should work nicely in the US meaning that it is a great option if it would end badly for the C6806 (i.e. carrier branding, removed bands and locked bootloader).

[Q] Differences between ZU models

So guys I have the opportunity to get this beautiful phone, but I did not understand the difference between the two models at my disposal.
I can get a c6802 model for 510€ (689 US$) or a c6833 model for 619€ (837 US$).
What I cannot understand is: what is the difference between the two models?
Concerns only the bands (one have LTE and other not) or I could have problems in the future with things like updates or modding?

Other than modems there is no difference.
At the moment the LTE models can not run on the new firmware. (well it can but LTE connectivity doesn't work) Other than that they seem to be the same. The firmware will work on either unit...
It comes down to if you want faster download/ upload speeds with mobile data.
- For me the extra money spent on the c6833 model wasn't worth it. Work and home have wireless, and the limited time I'm out and about HSPA+ is fine.
Do a quick visit to gsmarena.com.
To the upper right hand corner, you will see a search box.. just search for the ultra there.. you will see that the differences just lie on their network operating frequency (at least that's all i see :what
Other than that, it is pretty much the same...
I admit, the price difference between the LTE and hspa+ version is not worth it.
But here at my place, our network provider is pretty much forgetting their HSPA network and just dont want to fix issues anymore.. they are more focused in upgrading and stabilizing their LTE infrastructure so I'm just going to go with the flow and buy the LTE version..

Anyone out there rocking the XZU model: C6806 on AT&T? If you are, does yours shows that your getting LTE? I have the C6833, cause I thought this got LTE, but all I seem to get is H+

Yep, I'm on ATT with a C6806 and getting LTE. Had to switch to the ATT APN when I flashed CM, but yes, definitely getting LTE. And the 6833 doesn't get LTE for ATT, doesn't have the right band IIRC.
Yep LTE works great on the C6806. Was in LA the other day getting 30+mb down and 20+ up.

There are some locations in which the 6833 will get LTE but it's so not likely that it's not advertised as being compatible for AT&T. Even so, there were reports that some folks needed to have a recognized IMEI associated with their line of service to get LTE despite model and APN.

When I had my Z Ultra LTE (C6806), I was getting LTE on AT&T. However, there are two things you need in order for this to work:
1. Band 17 support which the C6833 does not have. However, AT&T may support band 4 (which the C6833 does support) sometime in the future but don't know when. If you look on Wikipedia and search LTE bands, it says AT&T supports bands 4 and 17 but AT&T currently implements band 17 predominately. There are reports on this forum that the C6833 should work on T-Mobile's LTE since they are using band 4.
2. The SIM card needs to be activated or associated with an AT&T LTE phone. If it is an LTE phone but not "approved" (basically sold) by AT&T, you will only get HSPA+. Not related to Z Ultra but in lines with the point, I purchased my dad a Xperia ZL and activated a new SIM with AT&T (previous phone was a Moto Atrix 2, HSPA+ only). When I booted the phone, it only connected with HSPA+. When I inserted my SIM which at the time was associated with a Galaxy Note 2, I was able to get LTE on the Xperia ZL. Similar stories can be seen by searching on Google.

There is an option to turn on LTE, I have yet to check if it works (I am stuck in a country with no LTE). I would know after new years...
Since the SoC is the same variant in 6833 (msm8974) as C6802, there should be no difference hardware-wise.
Maybe there is difference in antenna, but if I had to guess, I doubt it.

India has TDD LTE, BTW. You may want to try in Europe or someplace else.

I will check back the Soc model adn do a test. Currently my city doesn't have LTE provider as well. Will know the result later on but still it worth a trial as you have proved to me that the firmware of C6833 can be used on C6802.

At C6802 phone with the set drain firmware from C6833 LTE won't work. It is checked. 100%. In settings there will be LTE icon, but to sense from it won't be. On C6802 phones with the identical MCM8974 processor, there is no LTE module, programmatically not to solve it.
In the presence of communication of LTE there is no opportunity to set only LTE.

The C6802 is also known as the XL39h. However the external design for all variants of the XZU are identical. So often 3rd party's will say that this case fits the XL39h or screen protector for the XL39h.
But the C6806/C6833/C6843 are not the same internally as the XL39h. This (XL39h) base model was modified/upgraded to the now LTE variants. There is no way to suddenly have the LTE capability on a C6802

OK, I think I understand what you are saying... I have no reasons to doubt, but one question...
SnapDragon 800 series have many models, and the model with LTE radio is MSM 8974.
MSM 8274 is the model which is 3g (HSPA+) only.
I am just saying, that I find it curious Qualcomm will deliver to Sony a specially modified msm8974 with LTE disabled, when there is msm8274 available.

Just like the OP, I am still quietly optimistic that the day I go back home for the holidays (Tokyo) I can enjoy LTE for the duration!
Until I see something saying otherwise, I just cannot give up on the idea that they are cross compatible.
When I try to think it through logically, many things do not add up... For example, to fit a differing model of antenna in a frame and everything else that is identical in dimensions and specs(between 6802 and 6833) is hard to believe. If the SoC, firmware and (my guess) the antenna are the same, there are no reasons why it cannot operate at LTE. My C6802 has identical firmware and hardware now (I say again, maybe antenna different, but strongly doubt)
IF the antenna differs a LOT in cost terms, maybe Sony is justified in differentiating the models, and thus charging more for the LTE models. But then again, I doubt that too... which would mean it would have been simpler to keep number of models offered fewer. Unless, that is, it was a cunning move by Sony to justify staggered roll out to different markets (thus negating the need to increase factory output capacity) and at the same time charge more for LTE models like C6833 from uses in developed nations where LTE happened to be spread anyway.
After all, LTE models are just as capable of utilising HSPA+, right?
Well it's unfortunately not just software trick but it is a hardware with some fuse blown off. So even you flash the c6833 there's no way to get the LTE. It is fuse blown off case.

It emits frequencies known as:
Quad-Band GSM/EDGE –
Hexa-Band (I, II, III, IV, V, VIII)
WCDMA / HSDPA / HSUPA / HSPA+ / LTE
The C6802 model does not have this chip. It has the SKY77340. So will not emit hexa-band frequency.
So despite the SOC having a modem for cellular communication on-die, the devices still require a separate module to amplify the signal... So internally the 3G and 4G models are different.
As far as the antenna is concerned there are two RF cables that run parallel on both sides of the device. This should enable a stable signal.

[Q] Sony Xperia Z Ultra compatibility questions

I am planning on purchasing the Xperia Z Ultra for use in the US. I have noticed that Sony has several models of this phone -
Sony Xperia Z Ultra HSPA+ C6802
Sony Xperia Z Ultra LTE C6806
Sony Xperia Z Ultra LTE C6833
My intention at this point is to use it with T-Mobile LTE service. I realize that the C6802 will not do. How about the other two? Would both C6806 and C6833 be fully LTE compatible on T-Mobile US?
At some later date I may want to use it with AT&T or AT&T MVNO. Would both C6806 and C6833 be compatible with them?
Also, I travel often abroad and want to be able to purchase a local SIM cards in the countries I visit. Which of the two LTE phones will work better internationally?
In non technical terms - what’s the difference between the C6806 and C6833 and why Sony has both?
Which of the above two has the same network compatibility as the Google Play version?

Hi. I must say that I'm on t-mo and I bought my C6802 ultra since it came out and I has to say that when it comes to internet speed on HSPA+ not one I've had a complaint HSPA+ is fast enough for me here in denver co. Unless you really want to have LTE. I use slingplayer internet radio without lag. But then again not all phones are the same meaning may be I'm a lucky one that my phone s fast on my network.
