can heat effect the phone ? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

well i had something REALLY odd happen to the phone today that has never happened before ! the phone was laying on my dashboard whilst i went off and did some work. on my return i picked the phone up to book my client in for 6 weeks time. i went to open the diary in the phone, and the phone went crazy ! ! ! it was jumping to all different screens, opened the calender, then shut it again ... jumped from app to app then back to home screen. this must of carried on for 10 - 15 seconds? i ended up having to power the phone off to stop this random behavior. once i turned the phone back on .. it was fine ! could it of been that it was really hot today and the phone over heated causing this ? it was just really bizarre
EDIT .. just tried to txt a friend and the txt screen is behaving really odd now too ! its like im holding my finger on the screen .. so its putting numbers insted of letters although im only just making contact with the screen as light as i can ! and its not hot now ! and it even tried to call the person i was txting . something VERY odd and wrong suddenly started on this phone today

Try repairing your device through sony PC companion via support Zone
If it still acts up your device has become faulty, in which sent for a replacement

Did you leave your phone on the dash, in a closed car, at the sun? Especially the black version of Xperia? Black color is the color that accumulates the heat from sun the most, which results in your Xperia just toasting inside. I cannot imagine how hot it become on the inside and outside. Software might not help with this, you might have simply melted some connections or something like that...

Can I know which rom version you are using right now ? Because before I update my D6503 to 402 , I also have the same problem. But it's not about heat I guess. If you have ever run any huge 3D game under hot sun, then see how hot the body can be. It still work fine in that situation . So try to update it to last version and see how it going ?

Don't want to sound rude...but you are disappointed?
You left device fragile like this in a car on a bright sun in the middle of the summer and you are disappointed?
Mate...I didn't do such stupid things with Samsung 5610, 8 years ago...
You can't do that with electronic, there's battery in it, million connectors and sensitive parts...
It's interesting how Sony/Samsung/HTC are always blamed for absolutely everything..
Lay your head on dashboard for a few hours on sunny day like that day was and we'll see how will you handle that...

Guys obviously can't realised how hot could dashboard be...
(great link, mate - it's incredibly how hot can it be)
My buddy had car with a leather seats, in a middle of the summer he left his car on a direct sun for hours.
Believe it or not, when he sit in a shorts, he fried his legs and end up in a hospital...
I'm not trying to say Z2 couldn't be colder when it's working but would like you to do same test with S5 or m8 and post results...
Problem isn't in 60-70C temperature, problem is because car become an owen and keep temperature at 60,70 maybe even hoter for hours...

You want heat? Come on down to my neck of the woods in Thailand... Its so hot here, you sweat taking a shower. Any event. Direct sunlight magnifies several degrees hotter when penetrating curved glass such as that of a windshield. I'm surprised the phone didn't melt away

Clearly you can't read. The phone is certified to withstand water correct. Water does not mean heat. Heat and water are two different things. Google them and you will see as it seems you have a difficulty with understanding the difference.
Disappointed? That's user error. Not the phones fault. You should have not left it in the heat. The phone can't walk or go somewhere else.
If you want something that works in heat get a Nokia brick or something.
Sense these days is uncommon now.

it was about half an hour to 40 mins the phone was in this temp .. god forbid any one that buy this phone in a warmer climate than the UK on a warm day then ! funny thought ... the phone manufactures themselves ARE in a LOT hotter climates than the UK sorry but a phone should have tolerances built in .. if you can only use a device between certain temps or conditions . not a lot of good to average man that need a phone they can rely on wherever they are and what conditions

Well....I must admit you are right in some way...and I'm very happy Sony is working on overheating problem.
But, if you don't install air-conditioned back cover - try to move your device from direct sun.
When I'm in the car, I never put my device(s) "on sun" - that's just not smart thing to do..

Cold temps= no response from screen?

i ride my motorcycle often in coldish temps. it seems like if it's under 65 after riding with my phone in the pocket of my mesh jacket that the screen will not work for a couple min. the power comes on... i can unlock it but after that nothing. sometimes it won't even unlock.
other than a couple weird quirks here and there the phone works good. i have been having problems where i unlock the screen and then the screen will only notice touches as it wants to. all i have to do is turn the screen off and back on and it's fine. this seems to happen a lot.
any idea's before i take it into sprint tomorrow?
I got a couple glitches with screen with stock rom, but dissapeared after a pull battery, it could be the same

I would go and replace your phone, or have it fixed, (I doubt that it can be fixed by Sprint), but give it a shot.
Head to your local Sprint Customer Advantage Repair Center.
I would not rush to sprint just yet. I usually walk the 1/4 mile to work and back. @ a month ago I noticed this problem. When I get to work its unresponsive and when I get home. Problem is, my hands are cold and the screen does not like it.
At work, go get coffee and come back to it. At Work or home, quickly warm hands under warm with with Anticpetic soap (keep it clean). Works every time for me.
In Truck, I dont have that problem. But really, 3-4 minutes to warm up Expedition, a minute or so to put Photon in Dock, another minutes or so to get a playlist I want...............even people that catch the bus I beat them to work walking the 15 minutes or so. Bluetooth Headphones and Pandora?
I took it to a repair center and they told me some BS that the screen is thermal sensitive. When I came home last night my hands were warm but the phone was cold and the screen was half ass working. I ride a street legal dirt bike that has bark busters on it so my hands are a bit shielded from the wind. The phone tho is not.

DualSportDad,
Seriously, and I NEVER agree any Tech Support from any carrier, He may be right in this case, and almost all electronics have a operating range. I'm forward my comments based off my experience mention above. I think what they were trying to say (tech engineers help me out here!), touch screens work off slight electrical currents, if the face of your phone, or fingers in my case, disrupt that................
EDIT: I offered and excuse, not a solution, Sorry!! Have you tried OtterBox? It covers EVERYTHING and sealed to a degree. It offers good protection, but might also keep the temp up a bit?
I'm just having a hard time believing that there are tons of people walking around in the winter with phones that don't work and they aren't complaining about it. I live in Florida... its not cold here. I'm talking about riding a motorcycle at temps that I'm wearing a T-shirt and a mesh jacket. It not cold its just colder than it has been since I've had the phone.

Edit: here's the video.... give it a few min to finish uploading. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H6ycHuHhGwc
I work outside and its 30° right now and my touch screen works flawlessly.
OK, doing a little reading over coffee this AM (without my big boy glasses for fine print).................The Operation range for Photon:
60C(140F)
-10C(14F)
Im not sure what this means, but, do not recharge:
45C(113F)
0C(32F)
Now it looks like you meet these, but I would bet then are not in Stone, just like battery usage!
where did you find those specs? I left the windows open last night and it was 49 outside this morning and I had a hard time turning my alarm off on the phone cause the screen was inactive. It obviously wasn't 49 in the house tho.

Its not your phone i think it has more to do with your core temp when touching the phone... i use to be in snow non stop and my hd2 would do the same thing until i warmed my fingers and it worked fine.
Sweet phone! I think that is totally awesome that I can't make any call, even in an emergency, below 14°F. Awesome, so this means my phone will be a useless brick outside when it gets cold in Connecticut during the winter. Guess I'll buy a backup phone on eBay. I just want a flip phone. I don't need a smartphone when I'm fighting to stay warm, unless, of course, the phone will have an app that will make the phone work in cold weather and make everything around me 30°F+ warmer! Ahhh, let me get out of DreamLand while I can.
so as time has gone on the screen has now taken on a mind of it's own. i take it to sprint and they tell me there is nothing wrong with it. i'm about at my wits end... this is my recent video from this week.
http://youtu.be/oq4z9v2SdTk
Did you show them the video? I would call Motorola and ask them to watch the video or email it to them and have them replace it, not Sprint.
If I were you with that issue, and Sprint said it was normal, I would tell Sprint to shove the phone up their a**!
How do yah like them apples, Now Network?
no, i haven't shown them this video. if i have time tomorrow i am going to take it in to sprint tomorrow and show them. if they dont help me i'm going to contact motorola and email sprint directly. i really like this phone when its not messing up.
Try that, Motorola will be much more helpful. If Sprint thinks you're faking the video then that rep is crazy.

my note getting hot need advice

well here is my issue , i got a white GNote on the release date , was lagging & doing some strange things like switch to vibrate mode from max volume or going to sound from vibrate so i went ot he store ended up getting it replaced & got a candy shell case with it , i noticed the phone getting hot within 15 to 20 minutes of turning it on & i can feel the heat a little through out the case its coming from the top left corner or the top part in general also noticed while on a phone call with the background in brown color some lines across the screen so anyone else noticed that or am i just having bad luck & need to go back to at&t & try my luck with another one & anyone noticed that the white one lagging more than the black one , please help , any advice will help since one store yesterday treated me badly & told me to go to my original store . thank you all for any advice you might be able to give me .
In a word: No. I've had none of these issues.

My note gets hot as well, especially when taking a video for a few minutes. I only have a flip case so the back cover is stock. I assume the heat is from the cpu area (top left?) Under normal use heat is ok. I also noticed that the video recording and play back is not smooth, even with most apps off. Hopefully an OS upgrade will help. These N American Notes have the qualcomm cpu which seems to perform slower.
RNC
Take the thing back and demand a new one, no it should not get that hot. I use the s**t out of mine (battery last 8 hours) and it never ever gets hot. I have a white one and the thing has yet to lag and is super fast, do not miss my SGS2 at all. Well, I do miss CM9 but now I'm getting O/T.
Take it back ASAP.
just put that flip case on and notice it is getting pretty warm quick while using it for a while. i bought mine here in xda dont think i can take it to a store for return !!!
I can feel some warmth coming from mine right now, and my Streak used to do the same.
I've noticed mine gets hot right below the camera when multitasking for a while, or playing a graphics intense game like shadowgun or dead space, usually right after I finish with the game, close it and it will be hot and will start to cool down within 5 minutes. I also have a speck candyshell case in my black note. I might go and replace it if it keeps happening.

ok here is what i did . i called tech support my luck ended with a very nice guy but he didnt know nothing about nothing , lol at least i got that feeling , i demanded a note in my account that will force the store to replace the phone , went down to the store explained to them that i was treated badly by one of their reps , they deeply apologized & i told them what tech support said which was 3 majic words. CUSTOMER / BUYER REMORSE PERIOD , which means you dont have to give them a reason to want an exchange based on at&t policy , NO REASON AT ALL, just tell them you are not liking this headset & they have to replace it no questions asked , once i said that they tried to make me happy & i ended up with another one plus some credits on my bill, plus a new Moshi screen protector LOL. thank you all for the help.

Hey rolo,
How hot is ur galaxy note after roughly 6-8minutes of shadowgun gaming?
I don't notice mine reaching a really high temperature, lets say "warm"? Not Hot as in really hot e.g. streaming HD movies for 6-10minutes.... Does ur note goes that hot by streaming HD vids?

Ok so Im almost convinced that the mayor contributor for heating the phone isn't the processor, but the screen! My phone while in idle in my pocket sits about 84f, I surf the web for 10 minutes and the phone was at 95f, on top of that I played shadowgun for about 5 minutes on top of that and got it to 100f, now I took the case off and put it in my car ac vent with the backplate against it and it wouldn't drop temperature, flipped it over so the screen would be against the cold air and within one minute the internal temperature of the battery had dropped to 93f just by cooling down the screen, Im on xda now and it dropped a few more degrees, granted Im running an overclock kernel at 1.75ghz at the moment so that might add to the temps my phone is putting out, gonna flash the stock kernel back in tonight and test and see if there's any difference.

I just dont know what a level 2 repair is, I hope they replaced the screen so I don't have to worry about the yellow teint
Look at the attached ticket.
They need to write it somewhere..

You are absolutly right, however I am very carefull with my phone it is always in a cover and when in a cover a phone should survive a 15-20cm drop without a scratch.
All my other phones ( all SE mostly Xperias ) are ''as new' after one year of use, this phone is not strong enough.
This and all te reports of yellow teint and loose bottoms shows that the XS is not as strong and solid as it feels and has it should
feel sorry for ya .. i know how it feels when a brand new phone keep giving problems. i have always used sony products. my 2 televisions (one lcd and one led), 3 laptops, 2 sony mobile phones (neo v and xperia s), 2 camcorders, playstation 3, walkman, are all from sony. in the neo v, phone security is a built in feature. but in the xperia s, its that ****ti mcafee security that handles the security locking in case ur phone is lost or stolen. that mcafee security is a 7 days trial. what nonsense
sony is getting greedy!

I dropped mine more than a foot onto thin carpet. My phone survived just fine. I am betting it is a fluke or something. You might just have bad hardware.
So far i dropped my phone twice and once from the dining table almost a metre above the wooden floor
Nothing is wrong so far but maybe because my phone has a poly jacket case.
Feel sorry for you. Maybe you need to request a phone change
I think bad hardware to, I sent a mail to sony but so far no reply.
When I get an answer I will post it here, I trust sony to fix it and this time for good.
Hope my phone will be fine... i have no varanty in Russia coz i get Europe phone

20 cm drop is nothing.
Mine dropped from like 40 cm height, and landed on its back. No issues at all. That was two weeks ago, and in any case i noticed longer battery life span :silly:
Must be a problem with the headset itself.

Upgraded to ICS in the meantime or just before the drop?

Anybody's phone getting hot?

When I'm browsing the Internet or doing any lengthening tasks my phone gets hot. Sometimes it gets hot in my pocket even when I'm not using it. Today i played a game on it and it was a little hotter than i think it should be. I'm thinking of taking the phone in.
I was.just getting ready to post something like this. I have never had mine get hot while not in use but def during heavy use at the top back gets hot. I'm not sure what too hot is...
I have to add myself to this list....waiting for bestbuy to get some in so I can exchange it. Mine got hot in my pocket as well and was enough for me to feel it on my leg. I called HTC and they said I would need to send it in....I am sure Best Buy will get them sooner.
Also my wife has one and has not seen this issue.
The funny part about when I called HTC was when the guy asked me to goto a Sprint store and have them try another battery......I started laughing so hard at the guy.....I asked him if he really works for HTC. Then reminded him that this phone does not have a removable battery.....
I have noticed some heat from prolonged use as well. Not quite hot enough that I am concerned, but it is noticeable. I use the battery indicator app and haven't seen the phone go over 100 degrees F, which did happen on the OG EVO while charging with the screen on (GPS, etc). Curious to see if this is widespread.
I noticed this also. While using the car app with the screen on my phone got extremely hot. Once I turned the screen off it cooled down. This kind of defeats the purpose of have a car/navigation app... Right?

have you seen the teardown of the one s? you can replace the battery. the term "removable battery" is for consumers to know they have easy access to remove or swap out the battery themselves because its placed on the outer casing. a "nonremovable battery" is inside the casing of the phone but is still easily removed and swapped just like any other part of the phone if you have experience taking apart phones, but the only place you would find a spare "nonremovable battery" is at a Sprint repair center. what you did was pretty rude, bro.

Today my phone got hot while in my pocket. I had other phones do that so I'm not that concern over it and I will most definitely not be bringing it back to Best Buy. People need to be checked out by doctors for OCD.

I hope he was being sarcastic when he said you were being rude. I doing think you were rude. But then again, I don't think a lot of things are rude when others think they are.

LOL its cool.....not my problem if he thinks its rude...that is his issue. I guess you really needed to be on the call....the tech was being funny too....we were talking about using the phone as an on the go iron.....using it to brand other people....all kinds of stuff. I mean my phone was so hot enough to feel the burn through a case and my pants!!!!! talk about scary! lol
Piece of cake to replace the battery (with the proper tools). Judging from the video we could be seeing extended batteries in the future. Now if HTC did something dumb like hardwire the battery in then it wouldn't be possible.
I've noticed mine getting warm, but generally when it's being used. Maybe the Op has an app that's not playing nice. I had that happen once on my OG Evo. Uninstalled the offending app, and never had it happen again.
You have a CPU that's running at 1.5GHz, and is dual core. You run it hard it's going to get hot. Combine that with a high current draw the phone is going to cook. I use SeePU to monitor the usage of the processor. Nice app, caught a couple of apps misbehaving after seeing the bar graph for the CPU getting pegged, and staying there.

here is a break down, essentially comes apart the same way....nice! Much easier actually than the 3d was to take apart.
my phone gets warm when im using 3g data but stays cool if its turned off. i guess with the new lte phones coming out that's normal maybe idk?? anyone think that this is a problem worth worrying about?? only reason im concerned is i paid retail and i want a good phone that's not messed up and if it is i still have time to return.

Mine has gotten up to 101.5 degrees. I think it just because it is so thin and the sheer power the device has. My concern is would a case cause one to over heat?. By case I mean one totally enclosed, like a Otterbox.

maybe the evo really is this summers hottest handset
Mine stays pretty cool,85-90f.Only thing that seems to make it run hotter than that is playing a graphically intensive game like GTAIII.
Mine definitely heats up regularly under several circumstances.
1) Prolonged moderate use.
2) Heavy processor usage (Blood and Glory, Zen Bound, etc)
3) Car Dock. I was testing my battery charger. A stress test of sorts. GPS, Music Streaming, Bluetooth, constant screen on.
I'm using a battery app, and my temps in the car hit 116 degrees easy. (I also live in Florida which doesn't help the heat issue)
I also noticed if I'm playing certain games with the charger plugged in that I'll hover around 100.
I think it's a consequence of the small form factor. I started taking off my TPU case during certain the really hot times to aid in cooling.

Heat
My OG Evo got really hot after i first got it then eventually never got past warm. Might be just new parts need to get worn in a little
both my phone and my wife's get hot the weird thing is that you would think the phone would get hot around the battery but it actually gets hot around the nfc antenna

wet s2

I recently got my galaxy s2 wet in the rain while running around in very stormy weather (people in Brisbane, Australia will know what I'm talking about). I dried my phone out quite well, with no problems but one. Sometimes when I call people, or they call me, the phone will completely turn off. This never happened before and is really quite annoying. The amount of time it takes for the phone to shut down varies, some times it takes 2 seconds and sometimes it takes 30 seconds.
What I want to know is if this problem will persist forever, or is there is anything that I can do. I'm leaving my phone overnight without the battery in in rice for the next few nights to see if anything will help.
If it helps - due to my idiocy - I left my phone on when it was wet and decided to also charge it (where moisture most likely got into the charging port). It had small problems before such as thinking it was still charging when the charger was not in, and that the voltage was too high when I was charging it, but all those problems have disappeared, and the only problem now is the infrequent and annoying phone shut downs when I'm in a call.

This just ensures the phones grave is big enough to be buried it.
Phone might have worked fine if you kept it in rice for few days immediately after it getting drenched. But now..oh well

Damn are you serious dude? The thing is though everything about my phone works perfectly now apart from the random shut downs when i"m in a call. I was thinking maybe it was a problem with my battery or sometihng being lose or the connections not being so great anymore. It charges perfectly now as well.
It's not in every call that the phone shut downs either, it's only in some calls. I've had phone calls where the phone will not shut down either.
Do you expect someone to wave a magic wand and your phone will be alright on every call.Your dealing with water and sensitive electronic equipment.A guy on here went swimming for 15 mins with his phone in his pocket, and he dried it out properly and reported no ill effects.
Other guys report slight moisture around usb port and phone acts worse than yours.
At the very least, you should be changing the battery and usb port.Any damage to the mb makes the phone a dead loss, and the phone wont have warranty as samsung checks for water damage.
If I was you I would sell it,but keep it if your not bothered about the calls problem and you cant afford about a £100 swaparound.

Only you know the extent of the damage, if you've wrecked your phone you've wrecked your phone, no point asking here.
However, the S II is pretty good when it comes to water if you take proper pre/postcautions. I've had some lonely nights with my S II where it got very wet and I can report it still works as good as the day I got it (I did have a lot of tissue paper on hand though).

First time I ever got my phone wet so everything slipped my mind. Will get a new battery and look into replacing the USB port. Just was wondering if there was anything I could do with my call problem, but I guess not anymore.
Any recommended batteries worth purchasing? I've heard that there are ones that are better than most out there but just not specifics.
Cheers for the input. I'm not too bothered with the calls problem as it works more often than not I've found.
Youll be hoping nothing else crops up or it fails if you need it in an emergency......thats how Id get rid of it.
You could maybe sell it to some unsuspecting mug.
