[Q] S2 Display Problem - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Heard that amoled pixels die over long usage . Samsung stopped production of super amoled "plus" displays due to some serious problems. So, if amoleds die fast, amoled pluses die even faster ?
I am planning to buy a used S2, so shall I buy it ? Any real problems related to displays ? Anyone actually experienced such problems in S2 ? If a buy an S2 now , will its display last for next four years ? till 2018 ? Funny , but I am serious.
Will the pixels in S2 die ? and the screen will become black at some minute portions ?
Sorry for my bad english
Please help.

I personally wouldn't buy a 2nd hand S2. Expecting a phone that's already been used for up to 3 yrs to last another 4 yrs is expecting too much. We see more & more devices with faults nowadays (which is normal for any electronic device with age really), you're almost certain to have some kind of hardware issue(s) at some point. Plus you more than likely have no idea of the 'history' of the phone (what's gone wrong with it up until now).
For me, that would be a no go unless I either got it for free or really cheap (like AUD$25, tops). The only really cheap repair you can do yourself is the USB board which is about 10 bucks, anything else starts to become expensive, like the screen or motherboard, which can as much as or more than what you pay for the phone (depending on how much you pay, obviously). You'd be better off getting something newer/2nd hand.
If you can't afford that, you're going to have to decide whether to take the chance or not, and nobody here can tell you with any certainty how long the phone will last before developing faults (despite what they may tell you; anything people here do say is guessing/bull****), I mean, we've seen phones a few weeks old with faults, and some people have had their phones 2/3 yrs without having anything go wrong hardware-wise. It's the luck of the draw, as the saying goes.

To check if that display is heavily used, open a pure grey, white or blue image in full screen at lowest brightness and look for strange lines,stripes,patches,burn-ins,tints,uneven brightness and so on...everything that shouldn't be there. If everything's fine - you're good to go.IMO,if you'll take it,the only thing you might notice in another few years will/may be a slightly reduced max brightness and a little less blue push, but I guess you already know all this stuff,it seems you own a similar amoled-powered device.

[Q] Display defect or...not?

Hi guys,
New thing, i notice this on both i9100 phones (the one i sended back and the new one from today). There are like to almost same dimension parallel stains/distortions(?) on the bottom half of the screen and you can notice them only if is dark/semi-dark in the room and your phone is in front of a monitor/hdtv with a withe screen, in other conditions they can't be notice and from what i can tell they don't alter the image in any way. I will post a image from the first phone (the second one is almost the same) if you guys notice them or not, or you have a theory, please post.
Thanks.
Looks to me like a small manufacturing mark or defect in the polarising filter on the screen. I wouldn't be concerned with this, i doubt you'll ever get an LCD that doesn't have something like this.
the reason it is only showing up in front of a TV or screen is because the light coming off it is polarised. normally this shouldn't be visible, so the manufacturers aren't concerned
Somebody please correct me if i am wrong
No, i'm not concerned. I think is probably from the machine that holds the glass during production or assembly (because there are two i9100 with the same shape of the stains). I just wandered if other owners of i9100 notice the same thing with their phones, but from what i see nobody bothers...oh well, thanks anyway.
Well my phone doesn't have that. And phones I've had before haven't had that. If it doesn't bother you then that's fine...personally I'd be and would get a replacement.
These phones should be *perfect*

Ok sir, i will play this game, lets talk facts:
- This is my second phone after returning the first phone with the same problem and some package issue.
- The two phones come from the same online retailer but diffident distributors, this means is bigger than a batch problem.
- The problem is almost identical (two stains same shape), but visible only in one condition (mentioned above) and only from a very wide angle (btw if you tilt the phone in that light and angle the stains change color from darker to lighter).
- It doesn't affect in any way, shape or form the generated image, it can only be seen with the lcd off and in a fluorescent light.
- If you return for the second time the device, you have to wait for betwin 2-10 days (again) for the service department to come with a resolve and you risk to get a money back resolve, witch mean from 4-14 days to transfer your money in your bank account and after you start from the beginning with another retailer (all retailers have the same distributors).
With all above taken into account, honestly, what would you do?

I think you're very unlucky to get a replacement with the same problem. Like I said, mine has an absolutely perfect screen, and given the fact this is an expensive flagship handset, everybody should have a perfect screen. Even on cheap phones I've never seen the poor screen QC that I've seen on the GS2, it's a shame. But NEVER accept anything less than flawless. Imagine the blob gets bigger and distorts the image somehow? You will be angry!
Personally, it would be hassle waiting for a replacement or a refund etc, but I'd much rather have my money back or a flawless phone, than hold on to a clearly flawed one. It's bothered you enough to post up on XDA about it. Seriously man, just return it. Maybe get a cheap phone and wait til the Nexus Prime comes out...

GOD Damm it...man! Now i have to w8 for the "money back guarantee!!!"... i send it back because of YOU!....no man, thanks, you are right, i will settle for one with flawless everything. I attached a picture with the old one and the ex new one side by side.
I will change the retailer. lets hope third is a charm...
Later.
Well, third device, second retailer, same defect. I'm done, i didn't try the withe version but then again i don't like withe, so i will keep this one.
That sucks man. You could upgrade to galaxy nexus soon though!

Should I purchase the galaxy s 2?

I have been looking to purchase the galaxy s 2 for some time now. I've read about alot of problems with the phone but I played with the at&t version and it is super fast, beautiful screen, perfect size and has a great camera. The biggest thing that's keeping me from purchasing it is the audio quality from the headphones. Is it as good as the Iphone 4 or Zune HD(which is my favorite music player) from your experience? Next, hows the battery life compared to the iphone 4 which has great battery life and the only android phone that matched it from my experience was the nexus one. If I do decide to purchase the galaxy s 2, should I get the international version or the at&t version as Im getting them both off-contract. One more question, what kind of 3g speeds are you guys seeing in NYC with the international version and at&t version? Thanks
Now is not the time to get a Galaxy S II in my opinion. Wait for the Prime to come out and either decide on Prime or 4S

My brother just told me that he can get the at&t galaxy s 2 for only $430 so I'll just buy it and if I dont like it, I can sell it for 450-500. I'm really hyped for the prime but I dont know when they are gonna release it and I want to get a new phone over my iphone 4. I dont want the 4S as Im kind of bored by IOS and it was barely an upgrade over the Iphone 4 and I was disappointed, but IOS 5 looks nice.
Wait for prime bro'.
And if I was in New York, I'd sold mine to you.
I recommend you to wait mate, there are some problems with galaxy s2 that still has not been corrected (im running 2.3.4 because i havent got an update few weeks ago greater than that on kies).
The biggest problem with this phone is the retarded overheating, it overheats ALOT when recording at 1080p and playing a decent ammount of games, (i experience overheating issues mostly in 3D games like asphalt 5, Motor Academy, dungeons defenders and more. The overheating issue is a huge downside mainly because it cannot let you enjoy your game without feeling that boiling effect on your fingers and the fact that i worry most of the times for it to not melt the circuitry board inside, like it has happened before with other people (ive only read 1 guy having this problem so far).
But there are also other problems, the oled screen still blurrs, its faster than an lcd but blurr is still there, viewing angles shifts hue to a bit of blue, if u put solid colors like pure gray on whole screen, you will notice the color displays with a different contrast on different parts of screen, the camera displays a pink circle on the screen when in medium lighting conditions viewing white walls or other objects that occupies the whole screen.
Speaker quality is average, there might be more but i cant remember them right now.
This is the best phone i know right now but i recommend you to wait for a better one, hopefully without these problems, if u cant wait and rly like oled then this might be the best one so far.

WHAT? Dude if you have all those problems then you should return your device and get a replacement because i got none of them. This phone is seriously phone of the year and this is my first samsung device. If sammy keeps this up then i am in for good. And about screen getting real hot... I got that problem in the first weeks but then after an update the problem went away. Using lates villainrom now. But like every other dual-core smartphones the phone gets hot when you use it for a long time... Again this happens to every dual-core smartphones as the cpu uses alot of power. And to the op, I seriously recommend you to get this device, unless you're thinking about getting the prime then you should wait a few more weeks. But i dont think that the prime will be much better then SGS2 except better screen.
Umm i don't think you can call it overheating for the sgs 2. In the sense that it is not overheating, it is simply expending the amount of heat proportionate to the amount of work being done. it's like when you play crisis 2 on your computer, your computer gets really hot right? Well an average computer per say, not a prepped, or modded one.
So like the computer, the sgs 2 is bound to heat up since you are forcing it to perform at such high levels, meaning big 3d games, 1080p, etc. To summarize, with great power comes great heat.
Which brings me to another speculation, how bad will the prime or iphone4s heat up? if the Mali does this bad, I'm wondering how the sgx543 will do since it has atleast twice the performance.
Anyways onto your own matter, I'd rather wait than get a half year old device despite the enormous pros.
The SGS2 is kinda cheap now, and it will be even cheaper when the Prime will be out. This phone has good specs, it won't grow old that fast, so i wouldn't go mental for whatever comes next. Anyway, i'd wait a little if i were you

Well then, im not sure what u call melting the circuitry board, but i call it overheating.
as for whoever told me that i should change the phone because someone else got none of those issues, i had changed it 2 times and all 3 i had, had the exact same problems, you probably dont get overheating because you either dont use it for the same apps or games as i do or u have possibly underclocked it or have some sort of battery saving application, or maybe even an unnoficiall firmware, these problems are part of all s2 phones it has been checked plenty of times by plenty of experienced people in this forum, they are nothing new.
PS: i doubt iphone will have such issues, maybe their battery will explode again or maybe it will loose signal if holded with left hand, but i doubt itll have overheating issues, there are some dual cores out there and none have such issue as sgs2 has, it has nothing to do with it beying stressed to much, its either a hardware building fault or a software issue.
The S2 is pure gold still when Prime is out, the phone got no problem at all IF and only IF you follow the root instructions/rom installation instructions step by step, if you forget something, you probably end up with problems. (most forgotten is to install kies drivers or to not shut down kies while flashing with odin).
Prime is gonna be the top phone, so it can be worth wait.. but sure the S2 (2nd best phone by then) will cost about 200 less.
I bought the SC2 right after the iPhone 4s was announced, not regreting, and don't think the the prime will be much better, I probably buy the s3 when it comes out next year.

Buddy just go for the phone that YOU want...Galaxy S2 is for me a top top phone..dual core gorgeous screen and memory is great....regarding audio i cant find any faults with it..you have different equalizer settings and you can adjust it to your liking....
regarding the overheating issues i have occured them as well when i first got my phone....since ihave rooted it though and have got my custom rom and kernel that i am using that has gone away now and im experiencing great battery life....like the post above the next handset for me will be the s3....
iphone 4s if the screen was a tad bigger i would of gone for that....but as i said if you cant wait for the prime then s2 is the one for you buddy

Well overheating for me means it is expending so much heat whilst doing so little. Meaning it is heating up even though it is on standby or screen off.
Melting the circuit board I think is natural if you expect it to handle so much. Because when the GPU or processor demands so much power/electricity in proportional to the process, and the process is a big one, then of course it will need a lot of power. And where does the power go? Well the wasted becomes heat. And personally i don't think you can compare other past dual cores as none are nearly as good in architecture as the exynos or in fact perform as close, side from the A5.
And yes I do experience great heat when I play games like dead space, dungeon defenders, and so on. But i expect it since the phone is trying its utmost best to perform. Meaning it is trying its best to play at 60fps or more when it isn't needed. Now a solution maybe to cap the GPU and CPU to only produce frames at say 24fps or so. That may fix "overheating".
Note however that above is sincerely speculation as i have no idea how the SoC operates.
My personal experience after 4 weeks with the S2:
It´s great as a fast multimedia device (great images from Camera, HD Video recording and playback of movies and films, internet browsing), but if you plan to use it MUCH as a phone stay away... speaker quality is quite poor, you may experience trouble with echoes due to failing noise redcution, volume with headset is very low.
Other MAJOR downsides i found, compared to other droid phones:
Wlan signal strength very poor, around 20% lower signal rates that LG Optimus. Also 3G signal strenth is poorer than LG. Really disappointing.
AMOLED display is overrated, colors of images are distorted and very unnatural (reds, blues) compared to standard LCD (i´m a photographer so i know how my images should look).
Ob btw,if you plan to use the S2 as a GPS car navigation device forget it, because the battery will be charged at a max rate of 650 mAH even if your car charger can deliver more - at least with Navigon your battery will drop even when charging! What a joke!
Long story short: don´t buy unless you can get it for under 200 USD.
Nexus Prime. Simple.
Or Nokia WP7 if you can wait.
wait for primee buddy, i'd do it

You're on to something there!
- Also useful for hand to hand combat.
- privacy, no one will be trying to snoop a look at your screen.
- outdoor hobby requirements, you'll never be afraid of doing an army assault course knee deep in mud with it in your pocket.
My sgs2 , while good, isn't great at meeting the above points.
Go with what agrees with you.

Screen degradation, please help

Hi,
I intend to buy an S3 in two weeks, i've been doing some research on the internet and i found a lot of people talking about screen burns and degradation.
To be honest this phone is very expensive and if i buy it i intend to keep at least for 4 years, so in such a long period will i see a difference in the display?
Do you recommend me to buy this device for the next 4 years or more ?
EDIT : my average using time is 7 hours per day.
The only time I have heard of burn in is on store demo models which are switched on, with the screen on all the time, but it's still not too bad.
4 years you may see some burn in but I think it will be tolerable.
Also keep it in mind that after about 2 years screens should be fairly cheap so if you do see burn in it should be cheap to replace the screen.
If there is burn in during the first 2 years it should be covered under warranty because it's not accidental damage as well.

4 years is a long time and many many hours of screen use. Honestly... it may degrade slightly but I wouldn't expect to see a change in the screen for a long time.

Not every one is rich, plus in my country careers don't give great deals like you do have in usa.
So that is why i can't just change a so expensive phone in just 1 year.

I can't really afford an expensive phone every year, so what I have done is get it on a 2 year contract, then as long as I pay my bills on time I should get an easy upgrade to a top end phone after the 2 years, recycle my S3 or sell it on and hopefully get a half decent amount for it (cover my first bill after my upgrade at least)

Well said, mate. We don't have deals here, either! I hope you won't have any problems! I know that you won't be able to replace/repair/exchange your phone very easily. It's the same with me.
So, I recommend going for an LCD display if you're really concerned. I went for the S3 myself and, coming from an S1, I know that these phones can last for a long time and withstand quite a lot!
On the other hand, you shouldn't be buying such expensive phones if you're worried!

I really like the phone but this screen burning thing is worring me.
What makes it worse is that some people say that they didn't have a burning issue, and others say that they have this issue in 3 days, one week, 3 months ... (i read this online, and i've never saw any pictures)
Others say that they had their girl friends name burned on the screen because they text a lot.
I don't know what to believe.

Good for you. I believe when you get a 2 year contract at least you can benefit from it, in the end it's a win win for you and you career.
Not in my case, believe me, it is better if i buy the phone my self and use prepay-ed sim card. The contracts in here are just bull****.
Screen brightness degradation is, to some extent, inevitable.
If you are anxious to minimise the speed of degradation, I would make some suggestions from a scientific standpoint:
(1) Use the minimum brightness necessary under any particular conditions. This may mean using manual control rather than "auto". High brightness means high display current and this will "fatigue" the pixels more (as well as draining the battery fast).
Human perception of brightness has a logarithmic relationship with regard to actual intensity, meaning that if it appears (say) just half as bright, then in reality the actual pixel current will be hugely reduced and the stress on the pixels much less.
(2) Keep the phone completely dry. Water is an enemy of some of the chemicals used to make OLED displays. One of the biggest challenges in making reliable OLED displays has been sealing them against moisture.
(3) Don't leave the phone in direct sunlight longer than necessary. User experiences from another thread tend to suggest that sunlight (in fact, probably the UV rays in sunlight) might "bleach" the display active elements to some extent, thereby affecting performance.
one additional thing, blue is the worst color for burn in on amoled screens, .....ironic considering ics colors.....in reality the status bar is the only area you are likely to see it,, my galaxy s is fine after 2 years and good developers still support it

I know that 4 years is very long, but that is what i can afford for now and the device have very good specs :
This is phone is a quad quore, 1.4 ghz processor.
1 Gb of ram.
Great GPU.
Great connectivity options (NFC that allows file sharing, Bluetooth 4, direct wifi).
Very good camera for a phone.
I think i'm going to wait until the 15 and see what is the new Samsung device, may be a smartphone with an LCD screen:fingers-crossed:

It is better, because the blacks are deeper, contrast is better.
BUT and big but this degradation problem is messing my head up.
hello,
Me too I was worried about screen burn in, but my gs2 shows no signs of it after 10 months.I hope it will be the same for the gs3.
I think the most important thing is brigthness especially in the beginning of phone's life. The degradation seems to be not constant in time with more degradation potential when the screen is new.My first phone which had an amoled screen was a desire, and I had it constantly on high brigthness, and it showed some burn in in the status bar but with the gs2 i had no problems as I was more careful.

I don't know about the US, but contracts in the UK are useless. You'd be better off buying the phone overseas and then getting a prepaid account, preferably from giffgaff, but I digress.
Anyway, on to your problem. The screen burn shouldn't really be an issue if we assume that the S3's screen quality is similar to the Galaxy S'. My original Galaxy S' screen has lasted for two years without any visible decrease in image quality, so it would probably still be very usable after four years, apart from the fact that the Os would be outdated. The S3's screen should be able to last just as long.
Nonetheless, if you're gonna keep your phone for four years, I would suggest going for one which has at least 1.5gb of ram. Ram consumption on ICS has been rather high on my S3 and multitasking can be quite lousy at times.

For now according to gsmareana there is no phones with a ram > 1 except the S3 in USA (i'm not from usa so i can't use it). and two LG devices and i don't buy LG smartphones.
The question is : is it possible to increase ram on a smartphone, like we do on computers ?
no,the ram cannot be upgraded

Burnt Screen Repair or Custom ROM?

Hello, here is my problem:
I bought the phone used (refurbished) from a second hand store. The phone's exterior is is great condition. There is only one problem: The OLED display is terribly burned! Black screen are washed out with heat marks (inverse burns), and coloured screens are burnt.
The phone probably used to be a display phone for an store somewhere. The blue leds are the worst (yes I know what I am talking about), and the green and red ones are okay. I try not to display any images or colors that have more that 30% blue.
I've been ripped off too. The store has a BS no refund policy that they told me after I bought the phone. I can't do an exchange (partially my fault too, because I was afraid they would give me a worse phone!). I had no idea it was burned until I went home and turned it on. I was planning on returning it, but then did some research about the business.. I will never shop there again
I don't want to the phone replaced unless it is a newer model, or better condition than this one (that I have). And I don't want to go to a third party service, unless they actually know what they are doing. The process of removing the screen is time consuming, and very risky. I don't trust anyone but Samsung at the moment.
So.. I have two options:
a) Don't get the phone repaired, and maybe flash a better Rom on it. This will probably ruin my chances of ever getting my phone fixed by Samsung if I am not careful. Short term satisfaction, until the screen dies out (I hate OLED displays for that reason).
Or
b) Pay Samsung to fix or replace my phone. I have contacted them a month ago, and they said that I could get a repair as long as my phone was not rooted. I have no idea how much it should cost (if you know, please tell me!), or, if it is really worth it. Long term satisfaction, a working screen.
And Im not talking little ghosting burns either. My screen is always a greenish yellow tinge. And I cant look at anything without seeing a burned in screen.
And if they flash at&t ics Rom because I am still on GB, then I will root and flash ShoStock 3 instead.
What should I do? What is your experience? And where (and for how much) will Samsung charge for a screen repair? Thanks.
BTW, I live in Canada. It is unlocked.

Any other input? Advice? Similar problems?
This will help everyone who has the "burn in issue". This is a awesome phone (not the best, but still great). I think it is worth keeping.
I tried that link you posted. They say that they are selling a OEM LED screen. I find that funny, since that probably isn't real. Probably just a mistake on their part, great price though (considering the type of screen).

I think you're looking at the wrong thing. It's the LCD/Digitizer and it costs $160 (the whole service).

Sorry, I meant the screen they are supposed to be replacing. They say the replacement is a oem lcd screen, which dosent exist for the i777.

If you are going to replace the screen yourself...and I just did it..not hard at all. Etradesupply.com has the lcd digitizer with front housing for under 120 dollars. It includes capacitive button ribbon as well. Yes this company is in China...but it was recommended by a friend of mine and I am very happy with the product. I replaced my screen very easily. If you go that route it is worth it.

I am happy that you found a replacement screen for your device.
But, how long is it going to last? I am surprised that companies are spending money to make OLED (not LCD) displays for phones that are outdated. This phone is maybe two years old now, and if the screen is this burnt out: Is it really worth it? Do I have to keep replacing my screen every 2 years, or, is Samsung going to admit that their samoled, and other OLED technologies are "not ready for long term use because they die too quickly"?
Of course not, they just want your money!
A OLED works almost the opposite way as a LCD does. A LCD must send MORE power to a pixel that is displaying a dark pixel, while a LED display uses less energy to power a dark pixel. Almost like those old CUT monitors, it uses the additive theory of light, versus the LCD subtracting theory of light.
But they still use three color pigments: Red, Green, and Blue.
Someone who claims they are selling a i777 LCD digitizer with bottom button row is a nut ball, or, are false advertising what they are selling. I seem to be finding this problem with every third-party part company that sells parts for the OLED display.
I wish it had a LCD: It would last so much longer. Less heat, less problems, less stress, cheaper parts, and more confidence.
My verdict:
I don't trust myself enough to replace the parts myself. I ruined my iphone 3gs that way, and don't want to ruin this phone. If the phone was cheaper (I was also ripped off for the phone), then I would be slightly less reluctant to do it myself.
I will look into it some more, thanks fro your help.
Any Samsung screen replacements yet?

Just in this statement you're comparing apples to oranges. There is no comparison,They are not manufactured they same. This device is much much easier to disassemble and reassemble then any I-device. And anyone that has this device, knows that the screen longevity is about two years and that the blues are what burns out the quickest, unfortunately its part of the business world, mass production and cutting overhead.
In my opinion, from just reading your posts you're trying to get a quality device at a minimal cost and now you're going to nickle and dime yourself to death. On top of that, getting aggravated every time you look at your device. Save yourself time, money and aggravation and get a new device...besides.... this one, even though its still a great device and still being supported by great devs is a dinosaur and will in the near future be shelved.
Veni, vidi, vici.
Just my own opinion, but I think they're well aware that their oled displays don't last long. Odds are their thinking is that if your average display lasts between 2-3 years it'll help push you towards another new device. Just something to consider.
I have been looking at the Nexus 4. This phone (I777), is the perfect size phone for me. Not huge, but not small either. I just really hate the OLED. If it were ten years into the future (assuming that the led technology has a longer life span), then I would not be having this problem.
The nexus 4 is slightly bigger than the S2.. I like to buy older phones, because they come at reduced cost. Maybe I will wait for the next nexus to come out, then buy the old or new one.

Whenever my s2 dies, I'll be getting a nexus device. I love the i777, hopefully it'll last me a couple years....if I don't accidentally destroy it at work lol

[Q][Discussion] Heavily broken screen -- when to fix?

Hi there!
I'm from the Sony Xperia S section, but I have a question.
My friend's i9300 fell out of his pocket when he was just getting in his car. Somehow, he drove over it, stopped the car on the driveway and went to see what he drove over.
The screen -- all, glass, the AMOLED screen and the digitizer -- is completely shattered, not working at all. The phone, however, seems perfect inside (also boots up and connects to the PC correctly).
Not rooted, no bootloader unlock (or whatever that's called on these sides of XDA ), nothing. He's a noob user, only made calls, SMS and occasional pictures.
So he (having lots of cash) said if I can fix it, but if not, I can keep it. We saw that a new digitizer/screen/glass combo costs around 140$, used about 130$ (take into account that this is central europe, not USA, Canada, UK or Germany -- the delivery fees from anywhere but Slovenia are 50€ for each package).
In the end, I get to keep the phone. It's a nice piece of hardware and I'd like to see how it'd do as a daily driver and to see how development is going around here (seeing as you people already have PA 3+ and other goodies). But damn, that's just too expensive for a screen (note that a Xperia S screen+digitizer+glass costs ~30$, and this one has more ppi at only 4.3").
My question to you is, how long do I have to wait for working pieces of hardware to emerge that will cost around 60$? Note that a new Galaxy S2 screen costs around 60$ and last year's first Sony flagship screen costs 30$.
I'm thinking one more year, maybe?
Thanks a lot for any help at all (PLEASE, make this a discussion thread, I want to read your opinions and speculation ),
--someone755
P.S.
Also, if my 'one year' theory turns out to be true, it'll be just in time for a replacement phone. Would you guys recommend the S3 in 2014 (or even in 2013)?
You must be thinking that I'm going mad with using a 2012 phone in 2014-15.
P.P.S.
If anyone knows where the SMS messages are stored and can tell me how to get them (IF that's even possible) off the phone without the need for a screen, that'd be great... It just seems like I at least own the SMS messages to the guy...
P.P.P.S.
The notification light is blinking in blue... Does that mean something is wrong or is it just a notification...? I figure the latter, since I heard the sounds of it booting to Android...
Also, there's this weird water-y sound effect when I press the home button. Could that be the famous lockscreen?
Sorry for being a pain, I'm just visiting to see if it's all worth it (might sell the parts if the components never get any cheaper)...
Notification blue, is just that.
Sms, you could possibly get an hdmi cable if you are sure about fixing it in the long run and you will be able to use the phone through your tv...until you wait for a screen.

Thanks for the reply.
Well I don't feel like buying a new cable adapter every time I have a phone to fix, plus there's no way to control the screen because the digitizer is also broken.
I don't really care all that much for fixing the phone, I'd just like to hear your opinions on how long until prices go down to see if fixing is even worth it...

You can plug a mouse in too
The price sounds about right. I struggle with an Xperia screen being $30 though. What? The Screen is always the most expensive component. Digitisers / Glass is always cheap £15, £20 for most phones but screens (LCD, AMOLED etc) are always expensive.
I don't see these components coming down. There will be a need for them for years as some people will run their Galaxy for 3+ years.
In 5 years, the prices could even go up due to rarity
But if the USB port is already connected to a screen, there isn't any more place for a mouse...
For the Xperia S screen, I found you a link: http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-sony-xperia-s-lt26i-lcd-screen-and-digitizer-assembly.html So I missed it by $10...
Well I also thought about the price increase, but I'm seeing the S2 as an example... It started out at about $100 but nowadays you get one for $60...
I guess the best thing is to wait, no?
Wait only if you don't mind no supply or a price increase .
Trade that off versus your thought that its overpriced at present .
jje
Well if prices for the screen increase, thee prices for the other components should also increase, right? In that case, if prices don't fall, I can sell what's left of the phone... Right...?
Since everything is working perfectly, I don't see why not...

Ah ok. It's an LCD screen though, not AMOLED. ...and much smaller. so it's not a fair comparison
Oh, I completely forgot about the Amoled screen...
Though isn't it more expensive to make a screen with more ppi, albeit smaller? Would be more logical (as it's harder and more complex). But then again, the way Amoled pixels are arranged is also the most complex thing ever...
Quoting GSMarena
For the S2; Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors | 480 x 800 pixels, 4.3 inches (~217 ppi pixel density)
And for the S3; Super AMOLED capacitive touchscreen, 16M colors | 720 x 1280 pixels, 4.8 inches (~306 ppi pixel density)
I've also read a lot that the S2's screen wasn't as breakable as the S3's. Could that be one of the causes that the S2's screens started off way cheaper?

Well why not?
If the screens become rare, shouldn't that also mean that, say, vibrators would also become rare?
I've been thinking about connecting the thing to a screen and using it as a poor pc for media (movies, pics, etc.) or a small personal file server. In theory, that could work, since this still is a pretty powerful device...
Also, I've seen some Chinese sites selling fake screens and digitizers. I have yet to find a version that is compatible with the i9300... Again, would be grateful for any links
Screens are the most common things to need replacing due to accidental breakage
