stumped beyond belief... alltel grrrrrrrrr - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So to start off I've got an s3 through the dreaded ALLTEL... I know there's hardly anything for it so ya.. I flashed cwm through Odin and installed supersu and quickly found out I had to go through Knox.. I went and ran the de-samsungnizer script to remove Knox so no more Samsung firewall crap.. Got it rooted and everything's good til I realize the main reason I rooted (WiFi hotspot) doesn't even work so I go back to Google and find a WiFi hack mod .zip and flash it now I'm stuck at booting.. Come to find out that somehow I've switched my phone to d2spr.... Or at least thats what cwm says when I tried to flash a d2usc cm11 nightly.. Dumb me i know i will be harshly scolded.. I didnt make a backup!!!! Now trying to get back to stock now... Thinking.. My wife has the same phone bone stock could I just make a nandroid of hers and flash over mine or have I turned my phone into a really nice paper weight???

Flash stock rom via odin, to recover the you'll have to start again, btw your in the wrong forum this is for int'l s3.

Help i messed something up

ok so i wouldnt say im a noob but im not as advanced as some of yous. last night i flashed a leaked ics onto my phone and loved it with one exception. i couldnt figure out how to root it. all my apps are backed up on titanium backup and i didnt want to have to get all of them manually. so i flashed back to stock using odin with a file i used back when that crappy update came out. i rooted it with super one click and and then went to put on a prerooted ics... when in recovery mode now i get this message
cant access to '/system/csc/att/system/'
i try putting on cwm and siyah and i keep getting authentication errors and the installation aborts. also recovery mode wont read my external sd card now. when the phone is booted up it works fine except i tried to do the factory ota update and it keeps failing. i tried reflashing back to stock again and did the update unrooted and it still failed.
i know you guys hate hate when people ask without researching so i did SOME forum browsing and found nothing. sorry i dont really have time to look too extensively. i just want to know how to fix it. i appreciate any help i can get

Start with getting back to stock using this guide. Check for ICS bootloaders too, you probably flashed them and you have to get stock ones back (careful, flashing bootloaders can cause hardbricking). Once you're back to stock and rooted, you shouldn't need to ever use PC Odin again.
Then use this guide for rooting/flashing.
One other note: when you tried to install CWM, it sounds like you loaded an update.zip onto your phone then tried to install it using stock recovery. Stock recovery won't let you install unsigned update.zips, which is why that method for getting CWM on your phone will never work (hence the authentication error and installation abort). For our phone, CWM is only included in custom kernels, that's the only way to get it on there, and don't even think about updating or changing it via other means. Just flash a custom kernel, it'll include CWM, use it until you want to switch kernels.
Hit my thanks button, I was really nice this time. And post in Q/A next time as well.
EDIT: Skip the second guide if all you want is stock. You should be able to update OTA after following the first guide. Though even if stock is what you want, I highly recommend flashing a custom GB kernel because a) they're more stable and faster and b) you'll have CWM in case you need it.
You started off mentioning about "leak ics" which I have absolutely zero experience.
My suggestion:
1. Try to get it back to stock. Make sure it works correctly.
2. If hasn't rooted yet, do so.
3. Getting CMW into the device by flashing custom kernel.
4. From there, install any ICS ROM you want.

Stock Nandroid Blown Up?

Hi all - the weirdest thing is happening to me and it is definitely something I've done but I haven't the slightest what it is.
I've got CMX right now, and I've tried to go to a couple of ICS ROMs (Task, Sonic). They flash just fine, but on the new system if the screen goes to sleep the video flickers on screen wakeup. I have tried to remedy this by flashing an ICS kernel but haven't had any luck whatsoever. So today I thought I'd go back to my Nandroid backup that I took on CWM 5.0.2.7 way back on the 1st before I rooted my tab. I was on (and prefer) TWRP so I used Odin to re-flash the original recovery, wiped everything (including format /system from the Mounts menu to wipe the ROM) and restored the backup. Everything seemed fine. But to my horror, I locked the screen and woke it up to find the same flickering!!!!
I rebooted back into recovery and flashed TWRP back on so I could restore my CMX backup and I'm back to normal again. But now I feel like I'm stuck here, and the only way I'm going to be able to fix this issue is by using Odin to flash a stock firmware package. I really don't want to have to do that if I don't have to but will if I need to of course...
The one thing I haven't been able to get an answer on is before blowing everything away is what I'm asking now...in thinking about it, I had taken the backup before flashing a bootloader to fix my "rolling recovery screen" issue. Could the cause of this type of problem be a bootloader that the ROM doesn't like, or is this a crazy assumption?
OK I'm going to bump this thread with a simple to-the-point question - hoping for an answer as I work out my theories.
For those of you who have flashed ICS and custom recovery with no "rolling/flickering" issues - are you using an unlocked bootloader?
For the bootloader you just hit the point my friend, the bootloader that we use to fix rolling recovery problem has issues with most kernels except Pershoot's HC or CM9...
For your problem you should think of grabbing the official ICS or HC(just for getting rid of screen flicker),and in addition to flashing it you should extract it's stock bootloader, make a. tar.md5 out of it and keep it for future similar problems...
Note that the bootloader can only be flashed using Odin in PC and CWM or even stock flashing using MobileOdin can't make changes to it(or recover it)
For now there is not a proper fix for that but I think the best way is to have the stock bootloader and use ROMmanager or MobileOdin for flashing(since the recovery rolls with stock bootloader)...
Yeah I flashed stock ICS and rooted yesterday. I am just going to fight through the rolling recovery for now and stick with ICS until we can do more.
Thanks for the response!
some trick:you can rename the zip files you're going to flash so that their name starts with "Z",it's then easy to navigate to them(just press vol down twice)
Yep! That works, and you can also rename files as update.zip and use that option I believe. It's time to think outside of the box a bit with regard to flashing some ROMs...thats the bottom line. i am sure there are a few devs on this site that would appreciate it if we did more of that lol!
guys im really getting the same problem now... and i dont know what to do
would you be able to help me please?

Updating crazyness.

I have been trying to update my S4 (vruame7) to the latest. I'm willing to lose root. The issue I'm having though is one that NOBODY seems to have mentioned anywhere: It started where I couldn't update over the air as the update fails. So I tried to update it with Kies on my mac but the program says I need more memory on my phone even though I already have it. This prompted me to unroot my phone and do the update again, but the issue is still there. So I tried booting into recovery and that worked. I decided then to reboot my phone and add CWM touch via ROM toolbox Pro. It said it worked fine, but now I cannot boot into the recovery mode. It just goes straight into ODIN mode and it won't prompt me to confirm it or not. I get into a very soft boot loop if I try and reboot though Rom Toolbox Pro to go into the recovery. I will land in ODIN and then unless I tell the phone manually to go into ODIN and then NOT proceed than it will be in a soft boot loop. So far I've tried unrooting and using Kies, Rooting and trying to load CWM onto my phone and failing, causing OTA to not be able to even start installing, and I've yet tried to go into safe mode and try to reset my phone that way. I might have to do that. if anyone has any other ideas I am open to that.
Your on me7 so you half to use safestrap that's the on way you can have a recover...... You probably half to Odin your phone back to me7 for the update to work. You can't use cwm or twrp on me7, unless u have safetrap installed and the its a version of twrp in it

Thanks. I've got safestrap installed sucessfully (it was so easy), and I'm now trying to install the update by wiping my phone and then doing it. I'll see if that works.
Well, it looks like I may have wiped my phone too far as I'm stuck at the Samsung custom logo and It's not booting farther. i can get into odin but I have a mac, so what do I do?

Heimdall is like odin but its mac.compatible
Hit thanks if I helped you out. Doing a little bit of reading goes a long way. Sent via tapatalk.
Use oden or Heimdall (guess its a Mac thing) to flash back to stock and then you can take the update. You haven't bricked yet but it sounds like you are getting close so be careful.

Sounds like you did a full wipe on non safe side "stock rom" of safestrap so your gonna have to flash a whole factory image cause it all gone the whole os
So after working for hoursx and hours, of working at it, I finally found http://sonofgeektalk.wordpress.com/2013/06/13/heimdall-on-a-mac/ <-- that webpage and it helped walk me through using Helmdall and it worked after much fiddling and discovering that I had to plug in my phone AFTER it got into odin but BEFORE I confirmed I wanted to be in odin. I then had to not wipe the phone clean but just do the install with the right files. It worked and I'm so happy. Now to see if I can update the darn phone. Don't know if I can or not but hey, I've got my phone back up and running and that's a GOOD thing.
I don't care about root as much as I care about getting the latest software if it provides enhancements I like, or security features I want. I think that root is fun, but it can be a pain in the butt as I just saw. Now that I know how to do the whole shtick, I should be able to do a lot more with my phone. I remember when I had to learn the ins and outs of my old Xperia Play. Horrible battery life and sub-par graphics chip but an awesome phone that had an awesome utility that could do just about anything with the phone with minimal work.
Looks like the system is updating itself just fine using OTA. What a LONG workaround I had to do. Thank you all for helping me teach myself a lot more about my phone
I'm having trouble trying to update as well. I unrooted and did a factory reset but the update still fails. What should I be trying?

I think the problem here was that you tried to take an official update AFTER you messed with your phone... you should take this as a lesson to always flash back to stock before trying any 'official' updates, or better yet just have some patience for the updated files to show up here on the forums so you don't have to deal with OTAs at all. I don't really see the big rush to get the newest MI1 update anyway, it really doesn't provide any huge benefits at all and plus will possibly void your warranty through that stupid Knox thing if you try to root.
One thing I've learned is use patients dont jump the gun and if your not sure before you do something look here cause someone has already screwed up so the right way will be here somewhere and video will be on youtube!!

[q] help!! Note down

So ,im sorry but its a long story. Hopefully someone can help. My note is Rooted Ive been using TWRP. Everything had been fine until 2 days ago. I tried flashing a ROM i found on Goomanger.( I had been running liquid smooth) just wanted to try something different. Anyways it got stuck on a boot loop. Cant remember the name of the Rom. Anyways i was able to get back to recovery, thankfully. But when i wiped and flashed back to liquid smooth it would say optimizing apps, then it would reach a certain number then reboot and star all over again. So then i tried another Rom and the same thing happened. tried flashing back to stock rooted but it would turn on then completely crash and star booting up again. So finally i was able to flash paraandroid 4.1.2 and Gapps, but here is the kicker i have no service (AT&T) says cannot locate network, my IMEI is gone basically the cellular isn't working. Everything else works fine WiFi,apps, camera. Just cant make calls. I really need your guys help please.:crying:
If you have a suggestion please let me know, i hate using an old Iphone

Just odin back to stock. Get a complete factory stock image from the main sticky thread and flash it with Odin and Download Mode. There's a bug on one of the TWRP versions with 4.3-based ROMs that will put it into a bootloop by breaking device reboots. I was unable to flash my way out of the problem and was forced to do a complete reimage which solved all the problems and put me right back to clean-out-of-the-box state, then I reinstalled TWRP (though an older version before the boot loop bug) and re-flashed my custom ROM. The package I used was the stock image and Odin tool all in one .exe, just plug in to download mode and run it and it flashed bootloader, recovery, system, kernel, etc. all back to stock.

Thanks thats what i did, I just basically had to use KIES to use the emergency recovery, then root my phone again. My question is what version of TWRP causes this? cause i used the newest version i could find off GOO. My other concerne is, will it accept or be safe to use a custom ROM? Well i gues ill find out  THANKS AGAIN!
Everyone with the sgh-i717 is having problems with the latest TWRP and the most stable version is 2.5.0.0. Go with that one or you'll be starting all over again I imagine. And don't just stop at the download link in the OP's, read the thread and find out what's going on. The problems with TWRP have been going on for a while and the development threads have a lot of comments about the latest build causing problems. Good luck! :good:

[Q] Rooted, but can't install custom recovery...

Ok, so I've rooted and put custom roms on numerous phones. I've been trying to put a custom recovery, twrp or cwm, whatever, on my wife's phone, but have got a wall. I know for sure, 100% that I am rooted. I tired to install twrp and cwm via their respective apps, ends up in either bootloop trying to boot into recovery (and FYI, the screen shows that a custom recovery is installed, just doesn't load into recovery and restarts). And tried both via Odin, but got the same result. Have never ran into this problem before with any of my phone's, all of the galaxy's and Galaxy Note's since the S2. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks homies!
Just to add, yes I made sure double checked, triple checked that I was installing the correct recovery for the phone model. Also, she has done all the ota updates that sprint has pushed as of last week (2/9/15).

OK, from your post it looks like you have done this before. To be sure lets go through the motions one more time.
Your device is updated to 4.4.4 NK4 the latest KitKat version. It's rooted you have supersu icon and run a root checker. First download again ( in case you got a bad download ) a copy of Philz CWM version 6.48.4 here is the link https://goo.im/devs/philz_touch/CWM_Advanced_Edition/hlte/ use "phil'z_touch_6.48.6-hlte.tar.md5" . I like to use odin version v1.85 it's little older but very stable, here is a link https://mega.co.nz/#!oA5xzTAL!LXoVWB...ZlOMSWdRGVX6Uo now flash the .tar file with odin. Make sure you let device boot up on it's own back to the OS, do not pull the cable and boot the device yourself. Then try and boot into recovery.
If it bootloops again, I would backup all your data to the PC desktop, and then do a factory reset get back to bone stock ( that means when your in download mode it says Samsung Official status not custom ) so many times I have seen folks with an unrooted device where the bootloader still says custom and you end up with a dirty flash or worse. It may take a couple factory resets to get back to stock, it doesn't always take the first time. When I flash a custom rom and then decide to go back to stock, I flash the rom two or three times to make sure I'm bone stock.
If the factory reset doesn't work you may have to flash a new stock NK4 OS. Then root again and install the recovery. Here is my thread with all the info you need http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-3-sprint/general/samsung-note-3-rom-flashin-basics-t2896440 , Enjoy !!!
Thanks for taking the time to give me a detailed response. Sounds like I'm gonna have to wait till Wednesday or Thursday when im off work and have some time to do this, but yeah, I was thinking maybe just a factory reset, but I'll use your links and try it one more time first. I'll let ya know. Thanks again
Do you have another link to the older Odin (1.85).the link says the file isn't there... Thanks again
Never got to test it out, but she didn't really want a custom rom anyway, just the WiFi hotspot, and I finally found a method that works, big shout out to idone for his awesome app. If anyone else is looking for WiFi hotspot without root that sees this, check out his tread in the apps and themes, for this phone. Worked like a charm. Thanks again jimzweb1. Much appreciate the reply!
