Hi,
I am running Cyanogen 6.1 with APP2SD running, and have an 8GB SD Card with apps installed on it. I recently bought a new 16GB SD Card and was wondering how I duplicate the contents of my 8GB SD Card to the 16GB SD Card.
Any ideas would be VERY helpful.
I never tried, but I think it should be enough if you copy contents from the old one to the new one using a computer.
Sent from my HTC Hero
Unless you are using the native Froyo Apps-to-SD and not the old solution, then you can't just copy the files on a computer. Using the old system the apps are stored on a completely separated partition to what is shown when you mount your SD Card.
You can probably access that partition if you are using Linux, but having never used the old Apps2SD I can't check it myself.
I thought that might be the case. Linux laptop here I come!!
I recently bought a 16GB card and my Hero started to lag and restart SENSE randomly
Please reply to know if you have this issue
Hi,
I haven't put the 16GB in yet, as I have Apps installed to my 8GB SD Card and didn't know what to do (good job I have a linux based laptop really).
Sadly (not for me, but you know what I mean...) my ROM doesn't have SENSE. I am running CyanogenMOD 6.1.0.
What ROM are you running, I may know what the issue is?

I am running the villainrom12 with sense and i have overclocked it to 352/652
I'm such a dumbass... what "class" is the SD Card? And which elements of the ROM are laggy?
I noticed that this is a 2.1 ROM...

I have a class4 memory card, and when i am launching some apps htc sense just force closes and the app i wanted to open just quits, after it is happened several times, htc senses starts to force close again and again until phone starts to lag and then hangs up.
From what I understand, VillainROM12 is a SENSE 2.1 ROM. I can't understand why this would lag, other than the implementation of SENSE isn't the patched version with the LAG fix. Early versions of SENSE were terrible and HTC had to release a patch to fix the lag issues.
The force close issue could either be down to the app timing out or something isn't installed properly. I can't really tell without installing VillainROM on my phone (I have CyanogenMOD 6.1 which, in my opinion, is flawless). My ROM isn't sense orientated, it uses apps like Launcher Pro plus (I think it comes with ADW.Launcher by default) instead of sense. ADW does have a theme pack to make it look like HTCs SENSE app.
I would suggest a couple of things;
Check available RAM
Back up your SD Card and reformat it as follows;
EXT2 = 512MB (You can use more, but you shouldn't need to)
(DO NOT use EXT3 or EXT4, these partition types are kernel dependent, and will lower the life of your card, they are intended for large partitions of like 50GB upwards)
SWAP = 0MB
FAT = The rest
I use AmonRA Recovery 1.7.0.1 which has a very useful partition SD card feature, better than ClockworkMods anyway (Evertime I partitioned a card in ClockworkMOD the phone refused to boot). Unfortunately if you have any apps installed to the SD card you may lose them unless you move them back to the phone (If you go Settings > Applications then click on "On SD Card" this will give you a list of "moved" apps).
Again, if you HAVEN'T got any apps on the SD card this could be the problem, as you are using ALL your phones RAM to store apps in, so like a PC running low on memory, no RAM means poor performance.
Try checking available resources before re-partitioning your SD Card. If you can't see what memory is available to you, try an app ion the market place called App 2 SD Free by Sam Lu, it's free, and gives you a readout of exactly what memory is being used (it also gives you a list of apps you CAN move to the SD card). I'd use it for diagnostics for now, as I don't know if VillainROM12 comes with APP2SD installed by default.
Try these out and let me know how you get on. PLEASE make a nandroid backup first, this CAN restore your SDCARD if the partition goes wrong.
Please be advised that I take no responsibility for any issues that may occur. I have performed all these tasks on my HTC Hero with no problems though.
I have tried these things but nothing helped. I have done everything the same with same type 8GB card and there was no problem, i think that HERO just cant handle 16GB but HTC says that it can support up to 32GB.

I can't really comment until I format my 16GB car and put it in (should be arriving this morning). Have you thought about another ROM? SENSE is notorious for causing lag. The guys at VillainROM also make FroydVillain (I think the latest version is 1.7.2). This doesn't have SENSE though, and you will need to backup your setting/messages/apps/and everything else first.
Backing up settings is slightly different to a nandroid. I recommend Backup Everything, as you can select what you want to back up. The only problem is you usually need to re-download the app on your new ROM to restore stuff, even if you backup apps too.
Update: Take a look at this thread for other ROMs
Sorry I can't be of more use...
Okay, I decided to make my class 10 32gb external MicroSD card the main SD card. However, I noticed that even though they are flipped now, when I install applications, it won't load stuff in the /sdcard/.android_secure directory. Instead, it's STILL loading it into the built-in SD card which is now mounted at /sdcard-ext.
If I move the information from the /sdcard-ext to /sdcard, it eventually breaks the apps and I have to reinstall them again, which causes them (when moved to the sdcard) to be still placed into the /sdcard-ext/.android_secure directory.
However, if I go back to the default Droid X2 configuration (internal SD card mounted to /sdcard and my 32gb class 10 external mounted to /sdcard-ext), when I then move the apps to the SD card, it places them into the /sdcard/.android_secure directory.
It seems with the flip-flop, there is still something "hard-coded" that causes app information to always be loaded onto the built-in internal SD card.
Anyone know why this is?
This is exactly why I find the flip flop to not really be necessary
BUT ....data from apps does get stored on the external...like caches...and when u extract wit root explorer for example
Well, after "Googling" what the .android_secure directory is for (it's because of using App 2 SD to move the apps to an SD card), I understand what the directory is for, but I'm still confused as to why it would put those files in the internal SD memory. I suppose so it has access to it even when the external SD card itself is removed, I guess.
In any case, I'm also finding under the new Eclipse 2.0 that performance is not what it was under v1.3. Not sure what it is, but games are very choppy. At first, I attributed it to possibly running the games off of the external SD card, but when I flip-flopped back to the stock configuration, performance was STILL bad, so I'm now wondering if it's related to the new Eclipse 2.0 ROM or something else?
I might go and reformat the SD cards and see if that fixes the problem.
I am willing to bet that if u use v6supercharger that will fix ur choppiness in gameplay.
usually always has for me and others
Check the development sticky for a link.
Don't.be afraid. There are what looks.like VERY confusing directions but its actually quite simple to use if u use script manager to run the script...

I actually already have it. It's one of the first things I use once I've flashed to a new ROM. Unfortunately, it hasn't helped.
I'm going to copy everything off of both SD cards (internal and external) and reformat them and then try to see if that works. Hopefully, it should as I've had the performance before. If that still doesn't work, I might SBF back to 2.3.4 and see if the performance issue still exists. I'm thinking it's possibly just an issue with having done so many copy and delete operations, that maybe a good format will fix the issue.
Once thing I did when going to Eclipse 2.0 was I couldn't get the stock recovery to find the update.zip file for the 2.3.5 update, so I instead used the BSR recovery instead to install the zip. Not sure if that's good or bad, but I had read somewhere that you needed to use the stock recovery, which didn't seem to work for me. I could never see the zip file even though it was there.
Strange.

Did u have it on the external sd card?((and u were actually stock when u tried.to apply it?(rooted but no rom is fine..)))
I decided to SBF back to 2.3.4 and try the 2.3.5 update again. This time, it worked as far as finding the UPDATE.zip file. Not sure what happened before.
In any case, it seems like there is still an issue with performance, but I just found the 2.0.2 version of Eclipse on Nitro's twitter, so I'm trying it again to see if that might fix it.
Otherwise, I'm going to sbf back to 2.3.4 and then see if the performance is any better there. If it is, then I have to assume it's this release of Eclipse.
UPDATE: Well, on Eclipse 2.0.2, performance tanked. On stock 2.3.4 AND stock 2.3.5, performance is back to what I had before Eclipse 2.0 which was excellent.
I don't know. I like what Eclipse 2.0 has, but if it degrades performance, then I don't know if it's worth it. I'll try again later today. I've already wiped and reformatted both the internal and external SD cards and that hasn't helped either.
UPDATE #2: Okay, upon further exploring, I decided the performance hit had to be coming from one if not two areas: /system/built.prop and/or /etc/init.d/99tweaks. I removed 99tweaks first and that was the problem! I'm currently adding in each line, one by one and testing to see which is causing the performance hit. I'm also going to try and use the latest V6 scripts from Zep to see if that makes a difference.
Also, I diffed the v1.0.3 and v2.0.2 versions and there wasn't any differences except for the checking for the existence of a shell script file that it would execute and then remove.
I'll let everyone know once I find something.

There is absolutely never enough room for anything on any ROM I've used on my Aria. I install everything to SD, but even with updates and whatnot, it fills to the point where I can't even receive a SMS text message because the memory is full.
I've tried every custom ROM that existed as of December 2011 but now there seems to be new ROMs, including some CM9alpha/ICS ROMs.
I just want the ability to take some pictures, install some apps (TO SD!) and not have to be constantly deleting texts just to receive more.
So my question to you all is which ROM leaves the most space available? At this point aesthetics mean absolutely nothing. I'm sorry if this has been answered before, I did a few searches and nothing turned up. I can't imagine I'm the only person who experiences this issue.

CM7 should take up the least space. What do you mean by "There is absolutely never enough room for anything"? Have you ever done a clean install?
1) Format your SD card so that you have two partitions. The first one is FAT32 and the second one is ext3 (in that order). Apps will install to the ext3 partition, so make it as big as you need. I'd suggest 1GB if you have the space, but you probably won't need that much. Remember to put CM7 and Gapps back on the FAT32 partition before the next step.
2) Install your favorite version of CM7 & Gapps using the usual process.
3) Follow these instructions exactly: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=21667779&postcount=5
4) Never manually move applications to the SD card from the Manage Applications menu. Once you set up everything like above, you can use the phone freely without ever changing any settings about where apps are installed.
99% of users will never run out of space if they use this setup.
This can be done with other ROMs too, but isn't as easy to set up.
Edit: Oh, and I forgot to mention. You really should only do this if you have a fast SD card (class 6 or better). Otherwise it'll probably slow your phone down a lot.

^^ Agreed.
CM7 left me with I believe 80mb or 100mb for internal storage with a clean install. Highly recommend it, as far as storage goes.

Thanks for this. I'm going to give it a try. Storage space was also my issue.
This worked perfectly. Thank you so much.
I have just recently (5 hours ago) purchased a 16GB Tablet, that I had them repartition at the store, which has version 1.4.2.
I've spent the last few hours reading this forum and watching videos and now know WAY more than I ever intended to know about this tablet.
Rooting, dual OP, CM7, CM9, ROM, R3, Restore, etc. etc.
Due to so many warnings I've read about, I'm a little afraid to mess things up.
All I really want to do is install games I already have on my computer to the NT.
There were a couple of threads talking about this, but they were dealing with version 1.4.1. Not 1.4.2. I don't know how much of a difference there is.
Can someone suggest the best way to install these games?
Thanks for all the info you guys provide. It was hours of very informative reading.
i'm pretty sure games need memory ( storage ) and lots of it. tell us how much of the microhcsd you have available. did they leave you with one or six and a half gig ?
Unless you have an android computer/tablet with games from the play store or some other android market, the "games" you are referring to are not as easily transferable to an android tablet like the nook. The games have to be rewritten/redesigned for the android OS.
As for many of the warnings you've read, they are mostly to protect the person writing the guide. I.e. if you somehow manage to not follow directions and screw something up horribly, they want not responsibility for your mistakes. Honestly, 90% of them time in my experience with Android tinkering, Occam's razor holds true: the simplest answer is usually the right answer. And in terms of Android tinkering, that answer is user error.
So if you can read and follow directions and do a bit of troubleshooting here and there, you will be just fine.
My advice? Start with a bootable CM7 sd card. Go from there.
My apologies for lack of info.
After repartition, I was left with 5.91GB for B&N, and 8.00GB Other storage, plus 16GB SD Card.
Regarding games. All the games I want to use are all apk android games that I had from another android product.
Cubanluke88
The Bootable CM7 SD Card will boot from the card and leave the Tablet's OS alone? Is that correct? I guess this is where I'm confused. I think I read too much.
Please correct me if I'm wrong.
Rooting your device is like removing the old OS and replacing it with a new one?
Booting from CM7 SD Card will boot from the cards OS leaving the original OS on the device?
On one of the video's I watched, it was said "DO NOT FLASH ON THE 16GB Nook". I don't even know what that means, but I'll look it up and see if I can find out.
Thanks so much for helping a newbie who still doesn't know the terminology. I'll concentrate on reading about booting from CM7 SD Card.
Alright I'll try to address most of your confusion.
The bootable SD card essentially means you will not touch the current internal OS. You basically burn an image of CM7 to the card and when that card is inserted, the Nook will boot into CM7 instead of the B&N Android OS.
Rooting does not necessarily mean changing the internal OS. Because the B&N OS is Android based, and because Android is linux based, "root" is sort of the equivalent of administrative access on a Windows machine. It simply means you have full control of the device. Rooting the nook means the OS stays intact, but you can install the play store (Android market) and do all sorts of other things you are otherwise locked out of.
"Flash" is simply a techy way of saying install. When someone says "flash CM7 over the internal OS" they mean that you are installing CM7 (the custom version of Android that has been built) over the internal OS.
The safest thing for you is to create the bootable SD card of CM7 as it does not touch the internal OS. However, you can also create a bootable sd card for the custom recovery. From this custom recovery, you could then "flash" (install) CM7, CM9, or one of the other roms (custom OS) for the Nook tablet. It is also in this custom recovery that you can make a "nandroid backup" which is basically images of how your nook exists in its present form.
I know thats a lot of info. But honestly, before diving into this stuff, people should try to understand as much of that as possible. There are tons of resources out there that explain this stuff. Again, I suggest the bootable CM7 sd card as its the least likely to screw up. However, remember that should you go after the internal stuff, this thing is incredibly difficult to brick. Any mistake you make has likely already been made before and recovered from. So if something goes awry, don't panic.
Thats a lot of words. Damn.
It may have been a lot of words, but you've answered all of my questions and then some. I thank you very much for taking the time. This information helps tremendously and also makes so much more sense of what I read already.
Thanks Again.
That post deserved a thank. Really good description.

We have started a very good community here, keep up people.
I should add one more thing.
Should you ever decide to go internal, i.e. flashing over the B&N OS, which IMO is the better way, its incredibly easy to return the device back to stock conditions should you ever need to (i.e. for warranty purposes or something).
I've done it myself just to make sure that its possible. And it is. Very easily.
I just wanted to come back and say Thank you!!
I was able to created the Bootable CM7 sd card and it went flawlessly.
I still have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm having fun looking around.
Thanks to this group of wonderful people, especially Cubanluke88m who still take the time to help even the virginal newbies who don't even know the lingo.
My hats off to this forum.
In the future I may in fact do this all internally, but I guess I needed to do it this way first just to see if I could. Now I feel much more comfortable with the files, burning images, etc. then before.
Congrats, enjoy.
The next thing I would recommend doing: make a clockwork mod recovery bootable card and make a nandroid backup of the internal OS.
ok, will do. I will search for those now.
I do have a couple questions that I have searched for but I think I'm using the wrong search terms and not the correct lingo.
When I partitioned the sd card there was a tutorial for opening the card so you could use the rest of the memory, but it was for Linux? I've tried to search how to do this on PC, but again the lingo problem.
Also I have books and apps that I'd like to copy over, but do I have to put them in a certain directory on the SD Card, or do I still have access to the units directory.
I know these are stupid questions, I just don't know the right words to search for. Sorry about that. I know I can search for the two things you told me to do and they will probably come up. lol
Thanks again for all your help.

It's fine, it's always better to ask first. Could save you a lot of trouble in the long run. Unlike lots of other users, you seem like you are willing to search and learn things which is always good!
You can regain the remainder of the storage after writing the CM7 .img to your SD card. To do this in Windows, you'll need to download and install either MiniTool Partition Wizard or EASEUS Partition Master. I usually use Partition Wizard.
Unfortunately, while using the CM7 SD ROM, you won't have access to your apps and books from the stock ROM, so you'll want to transfer them to your storage inside the SD ROM. So I recommend copying the files to your computer, then connect your NT running the SD ROM. From there just copy the files to your SD card.
I've been using cyanogenmod ROM on my tab 2 p3100 that has been acting weird; maps force closing, black screens constantly, apps freezing for extended periods of time, and I want to start fresh. I'm going on a road trip for the holidays and would really like to use maps as they were intended.
I wiped all my personal data but there are still some pictures showing up in gallery and some app folders that didn't get deleted. My understanding is that this is all on the internal SD card. Is the ROM itself (AOKP 4.1.2) on the internal SD card also? If I were to go into CWM and format the internal SD would I lose everything and would the phone be unable to boot or would I be able to simply re-flash the ROM? if i were to put the new ROM on an external SD card would i be able to go back into CWM and flash it from there?
If I'm missing something feel free to correct me or point me in the right direction (a guide would be ideal). I've searched on various sights and can't find exactly what I'm looking for, everything seems a little vague.

i was wondered this a long time ago also bare with me as i try my best to explain what i know. so since tabs normally come with a lot of internal space and from what my knowledge is it makes the internal the default storage. for every file manager i use it defaults to the internal if you pop a micro sdcard into it the internal will still be the default apps will install on the internal only first (unless you use apps2sd or your internal has run out of storage) as for where the rom is at. yes it is inside the sdcard thats why when we buy the 16gig and we only end up with 14g its for the rom and other necessity's the tab needs to live. i dont know how you would format the internal sd card but im sure you would lose your rom if you do it. its very confusing i lost my stock backup (got the tab 2 also) because i thought the backup went to the external but it when to the internal and i wipped data and flashed a new rom. not sure if i answered your questions or answered any of them at all.
