This flashable zip will allow to choose how to mount your internal and external storage.
Your two options are:
Internal storage as /mnt/sdcard and external storage as /mnt/sdcard/ext_sd
Internal storage as /mnt/sdcard/ext_sd and external storage as /mnt/sdcard
I have not been able to successfully mount the internal anywhere else unfortunately but will continue looking into it.
SIDE EFFECTS/ISSUES WITH THIS METHOD
You can not mount the external sdcard to a computer
In storage settings, External storage shows under "Phone storage" and the internal storage shows under "Storage card"
Selecting "Unmount storage card" will unmount the internal storage ("Mount storage card" will remount it though)
If you remove or boot with out the external sdcard neither storage space will be available for use
Possibly others...

I'm definitely interested, however I am curious about what the reason/benefit of this mod would be.

The benefit would be all the big games will store the game data on the bigger external card. Along with other settings certain apps store. Also, if you have to exchange your phone, you keep all of your data.

I need a couple people with TWRP/CWM recovery to test out a couple flashable zips for me since I have not unlocked my bootloader yet. If you are interested please PM me and let me know which recovery you are running. PLEASE DO NOT post anything in this thread till I am done testing and have posted the zip. I should have it up late tonight (sadly I have work today) if everything goes as planned.

I'll test it for you, but I would also like a few things changed. Maybe increase app storage? Or could we dedicated some of it to phone ram?

TWRP does allow you to view the external sdcard you have to go into mounts and change it. Be sure to change it back though or your back up's wind up on your external card.

There should be a couple extra steps put in the OP.
And remember original storage is:
Internal storage = the app itself
Phone storage = the apps data
sd card= everything else
1. any apps that (the apk file itself) are installed in the phone storage, should be moved to internal storage.
2. Any of the game data that is on phone storage, should be moved to the actual sd card (sdcard2). This data is in the Android folder on phone storage (sdcard). So it should be moved from /mnt/sdcard/android/data to /mnt sdcard/ext_sdcard/android/data. Really just move the whole folder to the sd card. I moved the whole folder to phone storage from the sd card when I got the phone so I didn't have to sit there and download all the game data for the bigger games and such again.
3. Follow the steps in the OP of this hack.
4. If you want to get some of your 2 GB app storage space back, move the apps as you wish to phone storage. This will be the app apk file not the huge game data. But this time phone storage will be the actual sd card. So it won't take away from your 10 GB it will take away from the sd card.
The apps that get moved will get moved from /data/app to /mnt/sdcard/.android_secure.
also at this step I would say move a couple big apps/games as oppose to many little apps/games. Better to have a couple big ones to load not that often, than to have many little apps to load more often and cause more slowdown. The more little apps you have on the sd card the more possibility the phone gets slowed down, cause no matter what sd card u have, it's gonna be just a little slower than what came on the phone. So moving just a couple 50 mb games should go a long ways.
Now the question is what to do with that 10 GB. If I do this hack, which I eventually will, I would probably fill this space with titanium backups, have the pictures and video saved here, roms and such I will flash I recovery, ringtones, wallpapers. You kinda don't have to many more choices with this space. if I'm gonna take space away from the memory card but don't want to delete any of my 40 GB of music, I would want to move whatever I could in that 10 GB of space so it doesn't get wasted. Remember moving apps or huge game data doesn't go into the 10GB anymore.
There are pluses to this hack and there are minuses. Until I get the exact figures on what I can put where I am going to wait on doing all this, but I hope I helped give a bit of an overview to what is going on with your storage space and how it is used.
I posted this in the other thread too so no one misses it cause moving stuff around is time consuming and annoying.

What I was thinking is to redo partition sizes. The 2.3gb for internal app storage get increased a little more.
Could we use some space to increase our RAM as seen in task manager? Mount the rest as the /android or /data folder so our apps would load faster instead of ex_sdcard.
Mount the external SD as the sdcard as normal. Sounds crazy I know..

It's the same. The OP of that thread didn't see my thread when he made his. Mine is a flashable zip and his is the manual method (good for people that don't have unlocked bootloaders).
The zip failed for me in TWRP

Updated OP with a new version. Try that one out.
Flashed the new zip last night, everything is sweet. In fact I was having a problem moving apps from the internal [2GB) to the phone storage [10GB) and having the moved apps survive a reboot before I did this hack. I would move them, and after next time I would reboot, it would have the storage space taken up but not be installed. This is what made me flash this cause I was only going to have the 2 GB for apps. So after doing this and reboot everything is where it's suppose to be. Fixed my tons of problems with Google music too. storage and ram are a pain in the ass with this phone.
Follow my instructions and everything will be great.
My question is when I do flash new ROM and the swap mounts gets undone, can I flash this after the ROM in the same session or after a fresh install and reboot?

I'm running the stock unrooted AT&T Jellybean 4.1.2 on my Galaxy Note i717. Since upgrading to 4.1.2, I've been occasionally getting the dreaded Play Store "Insufficient Space" error when app updates are being applied. This behavior seems random, and cannot be replicated. A reboot clears it ... for a little while.
I've spent several hours searching XDA and Google. I've found a thread that discusses partitions in the i717, and suggests moving apps to the external SD card. That's fine, but it seems like a partial solution, since even after moving an app to the SD card, *some* of the app still appears to be in "device storage".
Here is what I see on my phone:
- System Storage: 1.69GB / 1.97GB
- USB Storage: 10.17GB / 10.84GB
- SD card: 57.96GB / 59.46GB
It seems to me that if I WAS running out of space, I should be able to remove files from "USB Storage", to free up more room for Apps. This, however, seems not to be the case. It appears that ALL apps I download are installed to the much smaller "System Storage" partition. When I move an app to the SD card, space is freed up in "System Storage" (and NOT "USB Storage") and taken up on the external "SD Card". But of course in the stock configuration at least, not all apps can be moved, so, again, if I want to install additional apps, I will eventually hit a wall - and, it seems, a very NEARBY 2GB wall, beyond which I cannot really install apps.
So, my questions are:
1. Am I reading this right? Are we really installing apps to the much smaller System Storage partition instead of the larger user-access "USB Storage" partition? Or do I have a setting wrong or an artifact left over from upgrading?
2. Can I repartition this phone (I know it means a full wipe, I'm fine with that) to get more space in System Storage so I can comfortably install more apps? If so, how might that be done?
3. I've rooted this phone in the past, and have run custom ROMs on it but have never hit this particular problem before. Do I really need to root or go custom again to solve this problem? Would doing that solve the problem automatically, or do I have to "do something" once I'm rooted?
4. Is there a better way of dealing with this (other than "don't install so many apps!" ) that I'm not aware of?
Thanks in advance for any help/pointers/guidance!
Glen
go to manage apps and look at downloaded apps. sort by size and see if any are unusually large. some apps are not designed well and store data on the system side rather than use sd. i know next issue is one of these. if you download to many magazines it will use up all free space. if any that you dont use daily and are large i would remove. i keep a copy of all my apps on my external card. only apps i use daily are installed and any others i can install when needed without having to download again. also good when you dont like an update and want to go back to previous version.

Thank you for this. It seems to me that ALL the apps I've downloaded - including such favorites as Google Chrome - are installing themselves completely inside the System Storage, and that NONE of the apps are installing in the larger USB storage partition.
So it's not only a matter of poorly-written apps, it seems to be a systemwide thing. Each time I remove an app, space gets freed up out of the 2GB system partition. Nothing changes in USB storage.
How can I approach this problem?
You are confusing yourself. First off it is NOT "system storage". It is "device memory". That 2GB is the default location to install most apps. However you can move most apps to the "USB storage" (10GB) in Application Manager. In application manager it is called "SD card" and not "usb storage". Do not confuse sd card with your external micro sd card. That is referenced as SD card in the storage menu but it is actually external SD card.
It is poorly written software by samsung. When you go to move apps in the application manager it should say usb storage and not sd card. And when you move them back it should say device memory and not device storage.

Okay, thanks for explaining that. I understand. So I assume there is no way to repartition or change the default to get more room for apps? Rooting won't assist with that? Seems that my only choice is to manually move what apps I can off of device memory onto USB storage?
Thank you!
Glen
I have not seen anyone repartition the memory so it would be like the Galaxy S3 and S4 (Device memory and USB memory combined as 1). So yes, your only option is to move what you can to the USB storage. It is a samsung fail to have the memory partitoned on the Note as they do.

Okay, thank you! I'm glad they've at least fixed this in newer models. I have an N7100 and N8000 and neither have the two partitions either. Just sad we can't fix it on the Note.
Thank you for your replies and explanations!

It would be awesome if a dev could somehow pull these together.
I actually put up a similar request several months ago, but didn't word it like this. I have several other devices, and they all use the space much better than Samsung does on this one. I have a Asus Transformer, that uses the entire internal space, as mentioned, and so does my Nexus. The silly 2 GB limit Samsung puts on these really wastes the capabilities of the device.
This is how to do it
Confirmed working on the i717

Hello,
I recently started getting not enough space when updating my apps, etc and when i go to storage i noticed that the internal storage seems to have 2 partitions.
- One with 1.97GB
- The other one with 11.36GB
Besides that i have a SD card with 32GB.
I am using SuperNexus Milestone 1 and it is great, but this running out of space is not working right for me... Shouldnt the entire internal memory that comes in the Galaxsy S2 be used as 1 internal storage...? It's been so long since i rooted my phone that i cant remember if this was how it was originally setup...
Any ideas?
Thanks.
That's how it was out of the package.
The 11.36 is for data storage, pictures, videos, random user data
The 2gb partition is where apks and config databases get installed.
How much free space do you have on that partition?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus
Right now it has 200MB free, but then it shows Internal storage 7GB free and SD card 20GB free...
I was just hoping that the ROMs would use/see the entire internal storage as 1 and the actual SD card as another one. But it seems like this is how android is...?
Is there no ROM that uses the entire internal storage as 1?
Its not how android is. Its how non-nexus devices are.
Nexus devices utilize one large partition for /data and storage. But with the downside that there is no external SD

Notice the part where I said DEVICES? Yeah that part.
It has nothing to do with the ROM you are on and everything to do with the damn partition table which you should not mess with at all.
Go to the ROM's topic and see that everyone else has the same layout as you.

Hey everyone,
So I hope this hasn't been asked before but I couldn't find it anywhere...
I have the ME7 Galaxy S4 and I just installed BoneStock ROM via SafeStrap. When I booted up the ROM for the first time, the Play Store immediately started restoring all my apps. About halfway through it says "Insufficient Storage Space" and stops installing apps. However, when I go into my storage in the settings, it says I have 5gb available (I'm assuming this is what I partitioned out for the SS Rom Slot 1) on my device, and 28GB available on my SDcard. Is there anyway to move all the stuff having to deal with SS and ROMs to my SD card and leave the device storage alone? What is the point of having 32GB of storage space on my SDcard if I can't even use it for anything useful?
Any ideas on how to proceed?

Wait for Safestrap to be updated. There isn't extSdCard support yet. I beleive that its being worked on though (based on user comments, not the developer.)
Hit thanks if I helped you out.

^^ This.
Hi,
another forum recommended I register and ask my question here. I am not a techie. I don't know what I'm doing. This is probably a basic question, but with all the googling I've done, I can't find the answer!
Here goes, and please be easy on me:laugh:
My GS3 was running really slow, running down the battery, just in general not running as well as I remembered from a year before buying it. I decided to back it up, reset it and start from scratch. The phone has run AWESOME! One problem though; when it updated, it installed 4.3. Ever since, I can't do anything with my SD card. I get an error that the SD card is full, and if I look in the settings, it shows zero space on the SD card. If I plug it into my mac, it shows like 12gb of space.
I used to use Android File Transfer and that doesn't work anymore. I recently tried Airdroid, which works great for the internal storage, but tells me that my SD card is full.
Help!
PS I tried to post a link to a screenshot of what storage on my phone looks like, but since I'm a noob, I'm not allowed
When you upgrade to android 4.3 it will change your storage partition from sdcard0 to emulated/0 ... simply it will change its partition so all your old files will not be visible there but they are still in your memory... I suggest you find your old files and move them to new directory... There are many threads on how to find your old files.. Search
