[Q] WM 6.5 Connection Status Icons - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Could anyone please point me to a comprehensive explanation of what individual connection status icons mean? I am talking about the G, E, etc. at the top of the screen.
I know that G stands for GSM, E for EDGE, and so on but what perplexes me is the fact that sometimes these icons are painted in solid white while other times they are sort of greyed out. What does this greying out mean? Is it that the device is reconnecting to a different cell tower at the moment? Or that no data link is currently available? Or something else altogether? It started happening recently after I changed service provider.
I would very much like to know what's going on. Please advise -- this ignorance is killing me... :-/
nvx

your assumption would be correct.
solid white shows available service, grey is limited service or unavailable.

Mister B,
Thank you for the clarification. Still, could you please be more specific as to what exactly those limitations might be?
Or better yet, could you please provide a link to a thorough explanation of all the connection status icons? That would be fantastic. I was trying to find any such document on the internet but -- unfortunately -- without success. I only found manuals to various HTC phones listing some of the solid white icons. The greyed-out ones weren't even mentioned there.
nvx

Yes I can't find solid mention of it in manuals.
an MSDN thread on this is no longer active as redirects to Windows Phone support.
seen it on several windows mobile devices going back as far as WM2003se
Definitely related to service not optimum.
If I find more relevant facts on grey icons I will update this thread.
Images below are added just to be complete in this thread for others who may stumble on it when searching

Yes, that is exactly what I have been finding on the web. Nothing more, though. :/

Do you perhaps have that thread saved in bookmarks in your browser? Maybe we could get to it via archive.org.
nvx

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsmobile/en-us/help/v6-5/Status-indicator-icons-touch.aspx

Thank you for the link, however, I am afraid that none of the four cached snapshots at archive.org contains the actual images (that is, the images are no longer available at the referenced locations). What is more, the list does not even seem to mention any additional information compared to what is available in the manuals. In other words, I am back to square one.
I will continue searching and will post here if I find anything.
nvx

If I find anything I will do same ...

Cleartype tuner

I was trying to find the solution for broken CT settings and came across this software
http://www.freewareppc.com/utilities/tunecleartype.shtml
Unfortunately, it doesn't work wih XDA2. But idea is right there. I've contacted developer and asked him about future versions.

How do you know it doesn't work?
Have you tried it?
A lot of stuff said to be PPC 2002 will still work.
But I can't even try it, as the link to the download, and even to the author website, seem down for me. (That is the link on THAT page, not the link here in your post!)
OK - I managed to find it elsewhere.
AND, I find that it DOES run on an XDA2. BUT... it doesn't seem to do much.
I'm wondering however, if this is because I already have decent Cleartype.
Can someone using one of the poor forms of CT, like the recent I-mate or T-Mobile versions try the attached file out, and see if it makes any difference.
You copy to phone, then run cab file on phone.
Then, go into Programs, and there will be a new entry "Tune Cleartype"
Run it and it will present two simple choices - "CT enabled/disabled", and type to use as ""Original/Alternative" (this can only be selected if option one is set to enabled of course).
Can someone with a poor version of CT try it, test EACH setting followed by an OK and a re-boot, and see if this does anything at all?
Cheers.
Zip attached.
Hi Shadamehr,
The "Use of ClearType" option doesn't enable ClearType, you still have to enable it in Screen settings.
Sadly, the Original/Alternative option doesn't seem to make any difference at all.
Particularly bad is White on Blue (i.e default scheme start menu, or text where the highlight is over it (i.e. lists).
Good idea though,
Phil
Damn.
Shame.
Cheers Phil.
But, by the way, you know the other thread where you post this message (I think), well there is a post in there by someone to say that the CUSTOMISATION ROM for the i-mate 1.72 upgrade, the special extra ROM... He says it FIXED his Cleartype.
You might want to read it and try it just in case...
Hi Shadamehr,
I'm running the imate 1.72 with the additional "special" extended ROM (1.72.800) from the ...SKU1.EXE file from clubimate.
I'm assuming that's what you meant?

It's confusing, this multiple thread stuff *lol*
If you mean in relation to the ROM add on that allegedly fixes Ceartype in the I-Mate latest build, then 'pass mate' - it wasn't me that posted the thread saying it fixed it, it was someone else - I was merely drawing attention to it, and asking the author to be specific as to EXACTLY which ROM or file fixed Cleartype for him.
Unless you were the poster that mentioned it, but I don't think so.
It's true, cleartype actually does show a good improvement after installing the English extended rom addition from clubimate. Not tremendoes, but at least bearable
There's still the strange coloration in white letters, but the blue shadows in black letters has gone. Cleartype still looks like having been shot at with hail bullets ...
Actually, I think Wiz is correct, it does look "better", just not "good" in the lastest ROM (but I'm not sure if it's main or "special" extended ROM that does it).
Phil
Yep, with this extra external ROM they DO look better, not perfect but better that without extra ROM. That just confirms that problem lies in software algorithm.

IE6 displaying bunched to the left

I'm sure someone knows the answer. I've been searching the threads for several weeks now, hoping that I could find the answer myself. I even used...<gulp> Google to attempt to narrow down the parameters. REad the Wiki, read the moderators warnings about search...even used CTRL F in threads to attempt to find strings....I am a failure.
So now I am willing to take the Noob flame for not being able to find, what everyone else must already know...
Using various ROMs....PRoven, DA-G, NAFT, RRE, RSW and now Energy, when I display MSN Mobile home page, it is aligned to the left....all content within an inch on the left. No other page does this...nor does any other site do this.
Occassionally the page will display correctly....usually when I flash back to an older ROM. This seems to indicate that I have totally missed the post about a settings change in the newer ROMs. Can someone point me to the fix for this....I am allowing a certain amount of flame for this answer....
Regards.....
IE6 does that on some pages, download diamond tweak and dissable ie 6 your phone will then use the older internet explorer and it will display properly. there is also a registry edit to do this also somewhere in the forum

Faster Internet / Full picture quality on mobile internet - o2 UK

Hi all,
Just got my Black T-Mobile G2 which I've unlocked to all networks and put my o2 simcard in...
Who knows how to get the settings to the phone? I guess I need them for internet and mms? Any ideas?
-- Edit -- Thread actually changed, scroll to 2nd page to see.
Google For the settings
The phone should automatically get the settings for that sim mine did
How? My sim card is in the phone but its not downloading anything. I didnt know if tmobile removed everything apart from theirs.
How can i get the phone to download them?
APN Settings
Go to Settings-wireless control-mobile network settings-access point names
edit each one of those to corrispond with o2's settings
try these there are others search on google
my username is actually o2web not mobile web etc

Thanks for that, I got my settings from a similar place. I've noticed something strange now though...
I had a white factory unlocked hero and when linking contacts via facebook I could see their albums and flick through pics and they were great quality.
Now I have a Black Touch G2 and still on o2, I've manually put in the settings and the pictures are grainy. I presume the settings are slightly different than they are on the white one.
Can someone with a white unlocked hero please post their settings for o2?
Thanks in advance.
????
On my hero the pictures are not really clear but clear enough, they do look a little grainy.
It may have something to do with the speed of your connection at the time of syncing the contact ie gprs or HSDPA, but other than that i have no idea
sorry
Ok, did a bit more digging and found it, so for all you o2 users out there, try this.
Go into your APN settings for mobile web and change your username to bypass
Restart the phone and look at new images (old ones will be cached). Should be spot on now with no reduction in quality.
Just changed the name of this thread as its a question answered but has some great info above for UK o2 customers...
Which pics are you referring to? Is it just the Caller ID pics it displays from Facebook?
Hmm..Speedtest results shot up massively now. Not sure if coincidence though.
Thanks
Phil
well the bypass u/n and p/w should tell the network to route you round o2's transparent proxy, so i would expect it to be a bit faster at least.
wonder if there is a similar way around T-Mobile's Transparent Proxy?

When linking a person to facebook and viewing their albums.
Also when viewing actual web pages, the images are full quality.
It is a lot faster, my speed must be about twice as fast now which is great, I'll edit the title again..

help please.
edit: sorry all seems ok now. it's worth mentioning that the username is 'bypass' and the password is 'password'.

Didn't get it from there, but that has lots of useful info. Just did a bit of digging on the web about the problems and a lot of iPhone users had the same issue, so o2 came up with this work around.

Is it all working for you then? All preloaded images before you did this change will stay, unless you delete the cache, but everything else should work 100%

I didnt notice a problem before so I cant comment on that. The main reason I changed the username and password were the above reported speed increases. I must say that I have not noticed any day to day speed increases as a result.

[Q] GoSms limited

I've searched everywhere over the internet and found little to answer my question. I make sms themes for GoSms, right. Though the problem is that the plugin installed into the go sms program is quite limited. I saw that a theme maker was available for pc before but last information I see in its regard dated to 2012 I believe. I looked for anything from 2014 but I can't find it now for download because every link I found resulted in an empty page. Am I missing something? How are people still sharing or selling themes on the Android market with such limitations on the plugin? I can't change the default avatar pic for contacts with no pictures, I can't change the background I'd like to use for the bubble chat.. the plugin only gives me option to change the color and transparency with the only option for a background for the message list and chat conversation window. I'm quite confused here. I would love to be able to share and sell some themes but I won't do it without being able to theme Go Sms completely (as in no limitations as the plugin has). Can anyone help me with this please? Give me some insight or something. I've overly confused myself and down to wanting to give up. Any useful info is very well appreciated.
Noooby...? At least an I don't know reply is better than nothing. If nothing thanks anyway.
The reason you are not getting replies is that GOsms threads are banned from the site due to security issues.

Cannot get past WIFI selection on Hudl 1

Hi guys, I hope someone can help coz I'm at the end of my tether!.
I've got a Hudl v1 which I factory reset because it was getting slow with stock ROM (never changed anything).
I come to the Let's get started and I click Start to get to the WIFI selection bit. I connect to my own router and it quickly says Authenticating (which it does), then it say Cannot connect to the internet, check your WIFI, and I click OK which takes me back to the WIFI connection screen. If I reboot at this point and start again, at the connect to WIFI point it says connected and there's the WIFI icon but no triangle icon to continue.
I've tried it on several networks, both open and secured and set it static IP but no luck.
If I use the Google keyboard method of getting to Settings I can browse Ok using Chrome and access Play Store etc and install apps.
I have tried 3 different ROM's now and all are the same. Used RKTOOL to flash it. Factory reset after installing each of them.
Debug mode and rooted now BTW.
I used ES explorer to browse to system/apps folder and renamed the HUDL SETUP apk to something different then reset again. The only difference now is that I have the 3 nav icons at the bottom.
Is there a way around this to skip the WIFI screen and continue to the next setup screen?
Is there a way of killing this process (if so what's it called?) of removing it?
Much appreciate any help.
Cheers
Paul
Factory reset HUDL - cannot get past the wifi screen
Paull,
I am having exactly the same issue my HUDL. I have not been through as many processes as you to get around the startup screen. My main theory now is to wipe the HUDL software and install alternative Android OS. Not sure if that would work in practice, but seems just the HUDL thats the issue.. Is it possible this is a deliberate bug by HUDL to kick the systems gradually off the market? Seems a waste as my HUDL still works well, so be stupid to bin it just yet.
Can you add any advice on how you did the other actions - how did you get your three buttons and did they operate as expected - presuymably not:? Even when I by pass to the keyboard section I am unable to download or update apps or install the Google Now Launcher.
Seems stupid to me. Really keen to find a post a fix for this stupid stupid issue?

I called TESCO contact centre and they confirmed that the software is no longer support and this sounds like a deliberate bug to stop the devices. - If you have a HUDL I would urge you not to factory reset as this will kill it altogether. I think from an environmental standpoint its atrocious to do this and for TESCO not to have a section about it on the website. They should also be telling people where they can send the devices for recycling or repurposing or offering a very basic OS so it can still be used even with limited fucnctionality. We need to start thinking about the whole picture and getting the information like this out there in the public domain.

Tesco HUDL1_Post-factory reset Workround
Hi All,
Over the past couple of years I've contributed to the MoDaCo forum on this topic as a HUDL user - since the MoDaCo forum is now defunct (sadly, recently confirmed to me by PaulO'Brien via email), I thought it might be useful to fill in some of the gaps for you by summarising the extensive history surrounding this problem, starting from the first Tesco server outage in early 2019. Much of this was documented in MoDaCo but is now no longer available.
I can also offer you a couple of workround solutions which I’ve tested on a factory-reset HUDL1, and documented as a detailed instruction set within a .pdf file.
Since it isn’t possible to attach anything other than image files to this post. I’ve transferred the file to Google drive. Unfortunately as a new user, it does not appear to be possible for me to include the shareable link within this reply to allow you access…..
If any of you are interested in viewing this file, please let me know via this post and I will look into alternative means of getting it to you.

Hi,
Since I'm new to this forum and there do seem to be quite a few restrictions on exchange of data, I'll need some advice on how to give folks access to the pdf file. As you'll appreciate, the amount of info is too large to insert into a post 'longhand', so a separate document was really the only way to go with this.
I suspect there will be quite a bit of interest, and it would be a shame if the site's restrictions prevented me from sharing the info.
I notice there is an icon on the post compilation page entitled 'Insert email link' - what exactly does this do, and could we use it to exchange email addresses offline ? I've no objection to corresponding with interested individuals, but I'd rather not broadcast my address too widely....
Cheers, Viv

My sympathies on being landed with 2 'dead' HUDLs by Tesco - you certainly won't have been alone in this, given the popularity of this tablet and continued buoyancy of the second hand market before the event....

FIXED!
I just managed to get past the setup wizard and get both my Hudl 1's back into service. The problem is not that the Tesco server is gone, but that it's certificate expired on 26th June. If you can escape the wizard and get to settings to set the Hudl's time to before that date the wizard completes successfully.
I've written up how I escaped the wizard and got into the settings to do this - it's s combination of information from this thread and stuff I've found elsewhere, none of it is really mine . No rooting or USB debuuging required.
Find the write up here: Apparently I haven't posted enough here to be able to post the actual link, so try this ....
https colon slash slash rob dot themayfamily dot me dot uk slash hudl
If someone with enough privileges could post an actual link for others to click that would be excellent.
I hope this is useful. Please let me know if you find better/easier ways to achieve the same end effect. If I get time I'll have a look to see if the setup wizard can more easily be disabled, but for now this has got me where I need to be.
Enjoy,
Rob.

Sorry, but not sure what website you went to. If you go to my site there are step by step instructions for recovering - but I still don't have enough posts here to link to it directly. If you click on 'TigerRob' to the left of this post and then follow the link to 'view profile' and then click on the 'Contact Info' tab you will find a link under the 'Home Page' - follow that to my write-up.
I've had a couple of other people confirm that they've made it work - let me know how you get on.
I'm working on a custom ROM, based on the latest stock ROM (JDQ39.20140424.153851) that will have the following features:
- boot 'chime' disabled
- setup wizard & Tesco updates disabled
- Tesco apps and branding removed
- Remaining stock apps updated to latest available for JellyBean/4.2.2
I'm probably a week away from having something that can be tested - if you're interested in having early sight and helping test then please let me know by replying here or PM'ing me.
Rob.
Fixed as well!
Rob, thanks for what is probably the best described fix I've ever seen for a tech problem. It worked perfectly, just as you described at every step, including the lack of download of the settings app so I went back and reset the hudl again but was quicker through the process second time. Excellent job! Rob
