[Q] Phone won't boot, perhaps hardware failure? - Sony Xperia Z Ultra

Hi guys,
My phone just died this weekend and I'm not sure what the issue is. Bought it in April of this year so it's still under warranty.
Specs:
Non-GPe Xperia Z Ultra that's been running a GPe 4.4.2 rom since day 2 or 3. Never had any issues with it. It's seen water a couple of times but the flaps were always closed (and they usually are since I use a magnetic charger). Water damage indicator is bright white. Haven't done any updates or anything in a very long time, it just died Saturday mid-day.
What happens:
I hold power, it vibrates once, then 3 times quickly and nothing happens (powers off I assume). If I connect the charger to it (magnetic or USB) the light turns red briefly, vibrates 3 times, 2-3 second pause, then light turns red again and the loop starts. Nothing on screen in either case.
Edit: When I connect it to a PC, it goes vibe - red - green - vibe x 3 and then from the top.
What I've tried:
Power + vol up/vol down/both for a number of seconds.
Red button behind flap.
Bag of rice for a number of hours because who knows???
So I can send it back to Sony, but my worry is they'll somehow bring it back from the dead and realize the bootloader is unlocked and it's not running the official FW. Any ideas/suggestions are much appreciated!

Try to repair your phone with SEUS software or try to reflash ftf file with a Flashtool. I had a similiar problem and that was the way I fixed it.

Just added this to my initial post: when I connect it to a PC, it goes vibe - red - green - vibe x 3 and then from the top. Sorry if this is a noob question but will SEUS work if I'm running a non-Sony rom? And you mean reflash the rom I'm currently on with flashtool?

That is good. It means that your phone is not dead and it is in flashmode. Download for example the latest SONY .108 FTF Rom from the general section, and try to flash it with flashtool. There isn't a GPe ROM which you could flash that way.
If you'll have any problems with flashing, you can always try to relock the bootloader and then repair it via SEUS. I did it when I had the same problem when I was on a GPe ROM.

What's the last thing you did with it?

Ummmm... not sure. I noticed in the morning that it wasn't working so I assumed the magnetic charger was not connected properly overnight and it just died.

Hmm, is the bootloader unlocked? Which ROM/kernel are you running? Did you try to re-flash the ROM with Flashtool?

Mine did something like this once while on a car charger (didn't seem to charge over night). would flash a red LED a couple of times then die. I left it on charge (wall charger/usb port) for the next night and it turned on the next day
Did you connect the charger the correct way on the last charge? Could be the voltage control chip?
You could try flashing a ftf, hold in the red reset button while connected to a PC while holding the vol down key. LED should flash blue then off. You will want a charged battery for this.
The best way to charge I thing will be a wall charger and hold the red reset button in for 5 -10 sec
I hope you get it working again

Flashtool connects briefly but the phone still keeps rebooting (vibe x 3 shortly after connection is established) so I certainly don't have enough time to flash anything

Yes it is. GPe 4.2.2 with whatever kernel it comes with. I cannot use flashtool because the phone still keeps rebooting even when connected to a PC. Tried connecting it both holding volup as well as voldn.

Yes I did. Magnetic charger only connects one way but I always check anyway.

Tried this as well. Nothing happens and it still keeps rebooting I've left it plugged in for hours before too and same thing. Guess I'll try again.

Do you connect it right after flashtool starts? Try to launch flashtool, select ftf file, wait for it to prepare, and then connect your phone when prompted to do so.

Can't even relock. As soon as the phone gets power it starts rebooting. Doesn't stay connected long enough for flashtool to actually finish pushing stuff to it:

Edit: On second thought, I managed to get it to say "relock finished" however SEUS still tells me my device status is modified.

Try to connect it to USB while holding +up volume. Check if the blue led will light up. If yes, you should be able to relock manually via fastboot.

I get a blue light as well, but it doesn't stay on long enough to be able to do anything. Reboots immediately

And what about flashmode drivers? Maybe try to reinstall them. It won't hurt us in that situation.
If you are on Win8 you should disable driver signature verification before installation.

At this point I'll try anything. However in one of my previous posts I attached a screenshot from flashtool that said " - INFO - Device connected in flash mode" - if it detects it it must mean the drivers are installed properly, right?
I am on Win7.

I read somewhere also that if you hold power button and volume up as well as volume down all at the same time for a few seconds when phone is frozen, it boots the phone like a pulling battery out reboot effect.

True, but there seems to be some kind of safety feature HTC built into the phone to prevent you from accidentally restarting your phone like that in say your pocket. The ambient light sensor is checked before the reboot will take place, hence the recommendation of rebooting with a light pointed at the sensor or at least in a brightly lit room.

I never knew that the phone checks the ambient light sensor before it reboots. I usually just hold the power and volume up button for about 10 seconds
Uh I just usually hold power until the back and home button starts blinking then it will stop to tell you the phone is off. I thought the guy who said the thing about ambient light was being sarcastic

Confirm this is true!
I was stuck in the aroma when I was flashing the kernel. I tried for hours to shut it down (tried everything, like hold down for minutes, all combination of holding buttons, etc..) but nothing works. At last I found this post and followed the instructions...
Additional info: The Light sensor has to be stimulated for couple second (may due to some buffer on the sensor reading). The last time I succeeded when I pointed a LED light to the sensor for about 10 seconds and then hold down the power button.
Thanks gunnyman! (Say thanks with words and Thanks button! XD)
alternate method to holding down buttons
I had to find a way to restart the phone when it was in TWRP and frozen. This was caused by using an outdated version of TWRP and no combination of buttons or bright lights was working. If you have access to a computer and are comfortable using adb, this method worked for me.
1) Get and install the latest adb files. I use something called minimal adb and fastboot.
2) Connect your phone, open a command prompt in the directory where your adb is located
3) Type "adb devices" and your phone SHOULD show up
4) Type "adb reboot" or "adb reboot-bootloader" and the phone will reboot either normally or into the bootloader, whichever you prefer.
5) ?????
6) Profit.
thanks all, power and vol up and down worked like a charm

Hi there, am also stuck on frozen TWRP screen, all was well and good for a while but then my damn stock rom downloaded an android update over wifi between reboots (didnt notice) and applied it without asking and now TWRP is non-responsive to touch. Have tried following the above but for some reason now fastboot wont recognise the device, it just says device not found when i try the above (when booted into stock rom). Have tried booting into TWRP and pushing the recovery flash, at the moment its not working either (can get into and out of TWRP as described above). Is it pertinent that during the process i get "ADB server is out of date. Killing:*Daemon started successfully? I have updated android studio to latest but still get this message for some reason...Any help much appreciated. Just trying to get a working recovery so i can flash rom.

Maybe my question above is in the wrong thread? I can confirm that holding down both up and down volume buttons an then power does the same thing as taking the battery out in other models (restart).

Fastboot commands work in the bootloader / fastboot USB
adb commands work in TWRP / recovery
If you can get to the bootloader fastboot USB reflash TWRP or relock the bootloader and flash the same version firmware you have now again
and then flash TWRP
Hi cIsA, thanks for your reply and for distinguishing that after replacing the recovery with TWRP only adb commands will work. Havent had this problems with other phones I have modded. When you say get to the bootloader, one does that by holding down volume down and power no? That takes me to TWRP. I thought recovery and bootloader were the same. So this mean i cant run fastboot commands after installing TWRP? I have re-posted my question in the TWRP thread for this device as I think I may be off topic given the thread title.

Hey gang this may sound like I'm being rude and I don't have a FIX for this but if you have a laptop, it's best to try and do stuff like this on your laptop. Even if you have a desktop PC on a UPS, sometimes the UPS won't last long enough to complete the operation in the event of a power outage.
I always run these on my laptop.
yeah ive realized after this mistake i should probably flash with my sisters laptop.. phone was plugged in for a while and it was blinking red > solid red> nothing > blinking red.. so dont know whats up with phone
although ive never messed with bootloader the thing is im not with the provider that sells this phone, i bought it off someone on a BST site and unlocked it for my own provider. ill have to see if i can still warranty it.

From my experience... this phone just won't die... believe it or not.... tried one the craziest attempt to kill my friend's phone... (He want his phone to be dead in order to replace with Z1)
I just can't kill it....
I pulled out the USB cable when it was almost finish flashing... then I got the red LED..
Next I fired up Flashtool and chose flashing and load up the FTF and connect the phone when instructed by holding vol down and connect USB cable... surprise... surprise.... the phone is detected and start flashing...
With locked bootloader it is virtually impossible to kill this phone...

1. Plug in your wall charger for about an hour.
Please don't connect the phone yet to PC.
2. Open Flashtool, select flash (the lightning logo).
3. Load up your XZU FTF and continue.
4. Wait until it shows the connection instruction.
5. Now by holding down the "Vol Down" and connect the USB.

Hello I Want To Ask U If I Flash Stock.ftf 4.3 From PAC ROM My IMEI Lost Right Is That Caused My Xperia Dont Want To Boot?
Please If Someone Know About It Please Reply As ASAP
Has it still got recovery? If so then you will need to flash a stock boot.img.
I guess you have an unlocked bootloader if so then the dual recovery one by ChilliChan for 4.3 will be ideal
Very interested to know a solution to this, here is my story,
I have 2 Z Ultras, 1 working fine with Root, UL-Bootloader, CyanMod, TWRM, and CWM.
The other.... well here's it's story.
I rooted the phone on 4.2, and went to OTA update to 4.3 last night. When I woke, My phone showed the dead android with the red exclamation.
No problem right? I used Sony PCC and attempted to recover, it said that your phone might be damaged and aborted the recovery process.
After that, my phone won't respond to me anymore, flashmode don't show any LED nor screen, Fastboot don't show any LED or screen, even the RED reset button doesn't cause my phone to vibrate. Plugging it in a wall socket gives no response.
Any ideas? Only rooted, Bootloaded is Locked, no recovery.
The only thing I had before I OTA update was root. I repeat, no recovery, bootloader is locked, no LED response, RED button doesn't work.

@YawningCat I think we need some more details - it is possible to get the phone re-working from a flashing red led.
"Device connected with USB debugging off" suggests that the device is partly powered on
these are the steps I would try, exactly as they are below:
1/ download (if you haven't got already) a generic, or one from your area, copy of .290 - I think I have seen you say that this is what you were trying to flash? if you have not already tried to flash .290 try .532 first as then you will not have imei issues.
2/ make sure all drivers for flashtool are installed - adb, s1, fastboot, etc
3/ start flashtool and select flash (lightning bolt)
4/ select flash mode
5/ select the ftf from step 1
6/ wait for flashtool to tell you to connect the phone
7/connect the usb cable to the PC
8/ press the red reset button until the phone vibrates
9/ connect the usb plug to the phone while holding the volume down key
10/ hope like hell it flashes

phone is not detected on pc and can't start phone in fast or flashboot, the LED turns green for 1 or 2 sec than turns red then the phone start (sony logo then black screen)
Then install drivers again
Install those from flashtool\drivers folder choose the ones for xperia u,p,sola,go and last 2 optins also, thats fastboot and flash drivers.
Open flashtool and try plug phone in fastboot mode, watch the led, if it start booting remove phone and watch right down on your pc screen to see if its installing. When it finish try again.
This is 99% of these problems...

yes do as said on above post. it couldnt be a hard brick. AFAIK hard bricks only occur if you flash something not meant for your device. except in Z series.

What windows versioon do you have?
Force power off, press power + volume up untill you feel (1+) 3 vibrations and try.
Try fastboot too and see if there is anything in flashtool log.

You had fastboot/flash mode working before and now they don't?
Do you feel the 3 vibrations?
Is it charging when pluged to cahrger when off, or even with sony logo?

I don't understand?! I can't go in flashboot mode, how can I flash with stock firmware ? and does stock firmware means the factory one?
if the led is turning green it means you can. but if you dont immeadiately flash stock firmware. it will boot. so you need to prepare stock ftf firmware for your device, choose it, wait for flashtool to tell you to connect your phone in flashmode. then connect your phone in flashmode

Nope, u need to open it and disconnect it
You dont need disconnect anything. Your phone is not bricked, its working. The only problem is your drivers, you have to manage install them and it will work. This has been here thousand times.

How can I recover a bricked phone?

I bricked my phone, and I can't do anything with it. when I try to turn off the phone with power+vol up or when I try to turn it on then nothing happens. When I connect it to pc via usb cable then just the pc recognizes that I plugged in an usb device but it says it's unknown. I can't get into flashmode. I have my bootloader locked. My phone is a Xperia Z2.
now when I connect it to pc via usb cable it writes:
15/058/2015 12:58:31 - INFO - Device connected with USB debugging off
15/058/2015 12:58:31 - INFO - For 2011 devices line, be sure you are not in MTP mode

That is not bricked... Learn how to use Flashtool, this is just a normal message that the phone is connected.
What is a bricked phone?
A bricked phone does NOT vibrate or show anything on a screen (useless as a brick). If you can boot up, then your phone is soft-bricked.
Boot into fastboot mode
Turn off your phone, hold the "up" button and start the phone. Do that until you see "Device connected in Fastboot mode". Now you can flash a kernel. And you should really work on your post quality. You haven't even told us which phone you have.

I know how to use flashtool, and by your definitions, my device is bricked, and I have told you that my device is a Xperia Z2
First step: Make sure your phone is REALLY turned off, I mean completely. A blank screen doesn't mean it is off. Open the USB/ micro SIM flap and carefully press the little red button until it vibrates 3 times. That will do.

Then repair it by Flashtool or PC Companion. If you use Flahstool please select all the 3 wipes, and No final verification and Reset customizations for a clean install and less chance of a bootloop.

yeah, I know that and I have tried to press the red button, but it didn't vibrate. I also tried to press the power + vol up button for many hours with rubber bands, but it didn't work. That's why I think it's a hard brick

I had a very bad experience with an SP (C5303), almost brand new and phone was like a hard brick...turns out it was on a zombie state eating the battery; so when I found out the phone was unresponsive the battery was completely dead so Flashtool couldn't connect. Then I proceed to let the phone charging overnight and then it turned on like nothing never happened.

There is one important information missing, what did you do that bricked your phone? Unless you really messed up your bootloader or TA partition you should be able to recover with flashtool. Most of the times flashtool fails it's a problem on your pc...check if correct drivers are installed, remove android emulators if you have any (andy, bluestacks) as they conflit with flashtool sometimes.
Very Best solution for this is when you connect your Phone to PC and start PC Companion, there is option repair Phone. It's download the correct version and instal on the Phone then all Working fine even when you have bricked Phone.
I do that more than once and It's working

Bootloop and battery won't charge

so i was flashing existenz MM and i can't go to recovery mode, before installing it i have xzdual recovery installed, so i thought i can just flash it again (and ofc it was stupid because after that i just know xzdual won't work with MM) so it's bootloop even when i charge it, the problem is the battery died and it won't fill the battery, the phone keep restarting when plugged in with charger so it keeps draining the battery before it filled up, i can't flash it because of that, the question is, how can i fill the battery so that i can flash it using flashtool?
thanks, and sorry if my English is bad.

If there is no other way you can always open the phone and charge the battery manually(if you have the equipment to do that). I had to do that to my phone yesterday(my battery was so low that it wouldn't boot).

You have to use a hairdryer. There are tutorials on YouTube.

The phone should also be able to charge in recovery. Try that.
Btw. I recently flashed a Z2 via flashtool with an unplugged battery (usb power was enough), so you could also try flashing it now although it's empty.

Thank you for the reply,
but the phone cant boot to recovery.
so i should remove the battery and try to flash it without battery plugged in?
because i tried to charge the phone overnight with no luck, havent tried removing the case yet because im not experienced to remove them, is there any alternative that i should try without touching the hardware stuff?

I would first try to flash just like it is now, without opening the back cover.
Opening the back panel is the last option I would consider, but only if everything else fails.
The thing with opening back cover is, that you will most likely damage you back panel, and you will have to order some new, fake raplecement + the phone won't be waterproof anymore.
And if you can get your phone into fastboot mode (and you've got unlocked bootloader) then just use "adb fastboot flash boot boot.img" command to flash some kernel with recovery.

Have you tryied to plug it in and then press power and volume up continiusly until you fell three vibrations? i think this is for reseting the phone if you continue to press until another vibration it will shut down and maybe then it will charge. Also this thread had helped me before http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1849170

It won't probably charge in fastboot/flashmode.
But it's very strange that the PC won't detect your phone when trying to enter flashmode.
Because, as I said earlier, I was able to get Z2 into flashmode without any power (battery taken out).
There should be some change in device manager when you connect the device.
Are you sure all the drivers are installed on your PC?
