How can I recover a bricked phone? - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I bricked my phone, and I can't do anything with it. when I try to turn off the phone with power+vol up or when I try to turn it on then nothing happens. When I connect it to pc via usb cable then just the pc recognizes that I plugged in an usb device but it says it's unknown. I can't get into flashmode. I have my bootloader locked. My phone is a Xperia Z2.

now when I connect it to pc via usb cable it writes:
15/058/2015 12:58:31 - INFO - Device connected with USB debugging off
15/058/2015 12:58:31 - INFO - For 2011 devices line, be sure you are not in MTP mode

That is not bricked... Learn how to use Flashtool, this is just a normal message that the phone is connected.
What is a bricked phone?
A bricked phone does NOT vibrate or show anything on a screen (useless as a brick). If you can boot up, then your phone is soft-bricked.
Boot into fastboot mode
Turn off your phone, hold the "up" button and start the phone. Do that until you see "Device connected in Fastboot mode". Now you can flash a kernel. And you should really work on your post quality. You haven't even told us which phone you have.

I know how to use flashtool, and by your definitions, my device is bricked, and I have told you that my device is a Xperia Z2

First step: Make sure your phone is REALLY turned off, I mean completely. A blank screen doesn't mean it is off. Open the USB/ micro SIM flap and carefully press the little red button until it vibrates 3 times. That will do.

Then repair it by Flashtool or PC Companion. If you use Flahstool please select all the 3 wipes, and No final verification and Reset customizations for a clean install and less chance of a bootloop.

yeah, I know that and I have tried to press the red button, but it didn't vibrate. I also tried to press the power + vol up button for many hours with rubber bands, but it didn't work. That's why I think it's a hard brick

I had a very bad experience with an SP (C5303), almost brand new and phone was like a hard brick...turns out it was on a zombie state eating the battery; so when I found out the phone was unresponsive the battery was completely dead so Flashtool couldn't connect. Then I proceed to let the phone charging overnight and then it turned on like nothing never happened.

There is one important information missing, what did you do that bricked your phone? Unless you really messed up your bootloader or TA partition you should be able to recover with flashtool. Most of the times flashtool fails it's a problem on your pc...check if correct drivers are installed, remove android emulators if you have any (andy, bluestacks) as they conflit with flashtool sometimes.

Very Best solution for this is when you connect your Phone to PC and start PC Companion, there is option repair Phone. It's download the correct version and instal on the Phone then all Working fine even when you have bricked Phone.
I do that more than once and It's working

I think My Vibrant is "Bricked"? Help! :(

Hey guys. Unfortunately, I am stuck on getting my Vibrant up and running. I've never had this issue until now. I am familiar with ODIN and all that is needed to restore back to stock. Everything has always gone smooth until this point. I was ODIN'ING back to stock, as usual, from a 2.2 ROM. I started the ODIN operation but then after 1 second or so, it showed that it failed. Then I unplugged it, like usual whenever it fails, and plugged it back in. And for some reason it couldn't read it. I've tried on two different computers already and it can't be read at all. Here's a picture that I found on a thread....BUT, instead of the phone and computer Icons being in the MIDDLE like normal, its on the TOP LEFT for some reason. I have no idea what is there to do now. Usually I am one to figure things out but I stumped right now. Please if there's any help I would really appreciate it! Am I gonna have to buy one of those JIGGS?

did you change your bootloader?
just keep trying with odin
took me 2 hours of constant trying to get it to connect last time i soft bricked
Okay here is what you meed to do.
1. Take battery out of phone.
2. With battery still out, connect USB to CPU and put it in Vibrant
3. With battery still out, hold the two volume buttons.
4. With USB in amd fingers on both volume keys, put battery in.
5. Enjoy download mode.
Nope I wasn't messing with any bootloaders. I was just reverting back to stock.
Hmmm well my computers can't seem to read it at all :/. It doesn't seem like that will work....

Have you tried
1. Start Odin
2. Plug USB cable into pc
3. Power off the Phone.
3. Pull the Battery.
5. Plug USB cable into Phone.
6. Press and Hold: Volume UP + Volume DOWN + Power, all at the same time.
7. Re-insert the battery.
8. The phone will power now, when the screen starts a cycle of going to a BLACK screen, release ONLY the POWER button.
9. When you see the download icon release the volume buttons,
10. Odin back to stock by putting the PIT file into the appropriate area and the .tar in the PDA area
try it the other way, mine doesnt do it like the poster above said
open odin
plug usb into pc
hold volume buttons
plug usb in to the phone

I had this problem before. What you need to do is, set Odin up with the 512 pit and JDF tar files. After that plug the usb cord into the computer but not the phone. Then pull the battery on the phone and wait about 10 to 15 seconds then, put it back in and push the power button. Hold the power button in until the phone to PC symbol pops up for the second time. As soon as it does plug the USB into the phone. A yellow com port should show up at this point. Your phone will still show the phone to PC symbol. This is normal. You can Odin back to stock, from that screen. Good luck. This always works for me.
Just had exactly the same problem with the Phone -> PC symbol in the top left screen. This happened after a segmentation fault in Heimdall during a bootloader flash, after which I removed the USB cable whilst in Download Mode. This was necessitated since Heimdall maintained that "Failed to detect compatible device".
I then pulled out my WinXP netbook in desperation to try Odin, but no joy, no device found.
I have a GB bootloader with Download mode remapped to VolumeTop + Power; so this is what got me into the good ol' yellow Download mode:
1) Plug OUT the USB
2) Turn on the device/ Possibly hold in until Phone -> PC pops up for a second time
3) Hold VolumeTop+Power in for 7+ seconds
4) Good Download mode should pop up
5) Attach USB cable, then the device should be seen.
Since you seem to have a Froyo Bootloader, you should do the VolumeTop+VolumeBottom+USB attach move.
It seems that if you persist and try different combinations of cable connects/restarts/button holds that it's going to budge eventually.
Let us know how it goes.

Hey gang this may sound like I'm being rude and I don't have a FIX for this but if you have a laptop, it's best to try and do stuff like this on your laptop. Even if you have a desktop PC on a UPS, sometimes the UPS won't last long enough to complete the operation in the event of a power outage.
I always run these on my laptop.
yeah ive realized after this mistake i should probably flash with my sisters laptop.. phone was plugged in for a while and it was blinking red > solid red> nothing > blinking red.. so dont know whats up with phone
although ive never messed with bootloader the thing is im not with the provider that sells this phone, i bought it off someone on a BST site and unlocked it for my own provider. ill have to see if i can still warranty it.

From my experience... this phone just won't die... believe it or not.... tried one the craziest attempt to kill my friend's phone... (He want his phone to be dead in order to replace with Z1)
I just can't kill it....
I pulled out the USB cable when it was almost finish flashing... then I got the red LED..
Next I fired up Flashtool and chose flashing and load up the FTF and connect the phone when instructed by holding vol down and connect USB cable... surprise... surprise.... the phone is detected and start flashing...
With locked bootloader it is virtually impossible to kill this phone...

1. Plug in your wall charger for about an hour.
Please don't connect the phone yet to PC.
2. Open Flashtool, select flash (the lightning logo).
3. Load up your XZU FTF and continue.
4. Wait until it shows the connection instruction.
5. Now by holding down the "Vol Down" and connect the USB.
Hope this helps if not your last option will be service center...
Good Luck.

Hello I Want To Ask U If I Flash Stock.ftf 4.3 From PAC ROM My IMEI Lost Right Is That Caused My Xperia Dont Want To Boot?
Please If Someone Know About It Please Reply As ASAP
Has it still got recovery? If so then you will need to flash a stock boot.img.
I guess you have an unlocked bootloader if so then the dual recovery one by ChilliChan for 4.3 will be ideal
Very interested to know a solution to this, here is my story,
I have 2 Z Ultras, 1 working fine with Root, UL-Bootloader, CyanMod, TWRM, and CWM.
The other.... well here's it's story.
I rooted the phone on 4.2, and went to OTA update to 4.3 last night. When I woke, My phone showed the dead android with the red exclamation.
No problem right? I used Sony PCC and attempted to recover, it said that your phone might be damaged and aborted the recovery process.
After that, my phone won't respond to me anymore, flashmode don't show any LED nor screen, Fastboot don't show any LED or screen, even the RED reset button doesn't cause my phone to vibrate. Plugging it in a wall socket gives no response.
Any ideas? Only rooted, Bootloaded is Locked, no recovery.
The only thing I had before I OTA update was root. I repeat, no recovery, bootloader is locked, no LED response, RED button doesn't work.

@YawningCat I think we need some more details - it is possible to get the phone re-working from a flashing red led.
"Device connected with USB debugging off" suggests that the device is partly powered on
these are the steps I would try, exactly as they are below:
1/ download (if you haven't got already) a generic, or one from your area, copy of .290 - I think I have seen you say that this is what you were trying to flash? if you have not already tried to flash .290 try .532 first as then you will not have imei issues.
2/ make sure all drivers for flashtool are installed - adb, s1, fastboot, etc
3/ start flashtool and select flash (lightning bolt)
4/ select flash mode
5/ select the ftf from step 1
6/ wait for flashtool to tell you to connect the phone
7/connect the usb cable to the PC
8/ press the red reset button until the phone vibrates
9/ connect the usb plug to the phone while holding the volume down key
10/ hope like hell it flashes

[Q] Phone won't boot, perhaps hardware failure?

Hi guys,
My phone just died this weekend and I'm not sure what the issue is. Bought it in April of this year so it's still under warranty.
Specs:
Non-GPe Xperia Z Ultra that's been running a GPe 4.4.2 rom since day 2 or 3. Never had any issues with it. It's seen water a couple of times but the flaps were always closed (and they usually are since I use a magnetic charger). Water damage indicator is bright white. Haven't done any updates or anything in a very long time, it just died Saturday mid-day.
What happens:
I hold power, it vibrates once, then 3 times quickly and nothing happens (powers off I assume). If I connect the charger to it (magnetic or USB) the light turns red briefly, vibrates 3 times, 2-3 second pause, then light turns red again and the loop starts. Nothing on screen in either case.
Edit: When I connect it to a PC, it goes vibe - red - green - vibe x 3 and then from the top.
What I've tried:
Power + vol up/vol down/both for a number of seconds.
Red button behind flap.
Bag of rice for a number of hours because who knows???
So I can send it back to Sony, but my worry is they'll somehow bring it back from the dead and realize the bootloader is unlocked and it's not running the official FW. Any ideas/suggestions are much appreciated!
Try to repair your phone with SEUS software or try to reflash ftf file with a Flashtool. I had a similiar problem and that was the way I fixed it.

Just added this to my initial post: when I connect it to a PC, it goes vibe - red - green - vibe x 3 and then from the top. Sorry if this is a noob question but will SEUS work if I'm running a non-Sony rom? And you mean reflash the rom I'm currently on with flashtool?

That is good. It means that your phone is not dead and it is in flashmode. Download for example the latest SONY .108 FTF Rom from the general section, and try to flash it with flashtool. There isn't a GPe ROM which you could flash that way.
If you'll have any problems with flashing, you can always try to relock the bootloader and then repair it via SEUS. I did it when I had the same problem when I was on a GPe ROM.

Ummmm... not sure. I noticed in the morning that it wasn't working so I assumed the magnetic charger was not connected properly overnight and it just died.

Mine did something like this once while on a car charger (didn't seem to charge over night). would flash a red LED a couple of times then die. I left it on charge (wall charger/usb port) for the next night and it turned on the next day
Did you connect the charger the correct way on the last charge? Could be the voltage control chip?
You could try flashing a ftf, hold in the red reset button while connected to a PC while holding the vol down key. LED should flash blue then off. You will want a charged battery for this.
The best way to charge I thing will be a wall charger and hold the red reset button in for 5 -10 sec
I hope you get it working again

That is good. It means that your phone is not dead and it is in flashmode. Download for example the latest SONY .108 FTF Rom from the general section, and try to flash it with flashtool. There isn't a GPe ROM which you could flash that way.
If you'll have any problems with flashing, you can always try to relock the bootloader and then repair it via SEUS. I did it when I had the same problem when I was on a GPe ROM.

Flashtool connects briefly but the phone still keeps rebooting (vibe x 3 shortly after connection is established) so I certainly don't have enough time to flash anything

Yes it is. GPe 4.2.2 with whatever kernel it comes with. I cannot use flashtool because the phone still keeps rebooting even when connected to a PC. Tried connecting it both holding volup as well as voldn.

Yes I did. Magnetic charger only connects one way but I always check anyway.

Tried this as well. Nothing happens and it still keeps rebooting I've left it plugged in for hours before too and same thing. Guess I'll try again.
Do you connect it right after flashtool starts? Try to launch flashtool, select ftf file, wait for it to prepare, and then connect your phone when prompted to do so.

Can't even relock. As soon as the phone gets power it starts rebooting. Doesn't stay connected long enough for flashtool to actually finish pushing stuff to it:

Edit: On second thought, I managed to get it to say "relock finished" however SEUS still tells me my device status is modified.
Try to connect it to USB while holding +up volume. Check if the blue led will light up. If yes, you should be able to relock manually via fastboot.

I get a blue light as well, but it doesn't stay on long enough to be able to do anything. Reboots immediately

Quick question: are you sure that you have flashtool/adb/usb drivers installed? (You can find them in Flashtool/Drivers folder).

And what about flashmode drivers? Maybe try to reinstall them. It won't hurt us in that situation.
If you are on Win8 you should disable driver signature verification before installation.

At this point I'll try anything. However in one of my previous posts I attached a screenshot from flashtool that said " - INFO - Device connected in flash mode" - if it detects it it must mean the drivers are installed properly, right?
I am on Win7.

[HELP] Hardbricked phone

Hello, i need help, i tried everything but nothing seems to work. I tried to crossflash a TM version but i believe that i did something wrong and deleted a partition. When i tried to go from EDL to download mode it simple became unresponsive, the screen doesn't show anything but it can be connected to 9008 and is detected by qfil. On qfil when i try to open the partition manager, it never opens, just says that is working. I cannot hard or soft reset it. and when i try to flash it wit lgup isnt detected and is telling that there is no handset connected
Please help, i dont know what to do now.
Edit:
I'll try to explain me better.
The phone doesn't turn on but is detected on QFIL.
Buttons doesn't seem to work,i mean, they work but i cannot turn it on or go to the recovery mode.
When im in QFIL and i try to use the partition manager the partition manager window never pop up.

i managet to be able to open the partition manager, but i don't know what to do now ): i loaded the img of the files that i backed but still nothing
It seems as, if you not only deleted a partition, but possibly the entire flash. this has happened to a few here, because the corresponding command is placed in the wrong place in Partition Manager (when opening a single partition).
Which partiton should it have been that you supposedly deleted?
If that was really the case, then without an existing full backup you have a bigger problem...
you can restore full backup but you will have problem with imei its hard to fix
You should wait until your phone is complete discharged. Then try again to initialize the EDL-Mode and to get in Partition-Manager. If you don't become Partition-Infos, then you can be sure, your Partition-Table is defect (or deleted).

i finally can enter into the partition manager after a lot of attempts
Have you extracted partitions from kdz by your Hand, to Flash them in Partition Manager?
Attention: Before you Flash partitions, make Backups from then (Read Data Partition)!
And, don't Flash FTM
That seems good, what i now see...
You should now try to reach Dl-Mode again

Ok, then you must try to flash some lun0 partitions from your kdz (except ftm).
Then retry to get in Download-Mode...
nothing
my phone still doesnt show any image on the screen
so i guide myself with the sound that makes windows when you connect a new device
i flashed the files and closed qfil,
after that i hold power and vol- until i hear the sound of windows telling me that the devices is disconnected.
after that i hold power and vol+ i hear the windows connecting to the device but it seems that doesnt enter into download mode, i check with lgup and there is no devices.
i check in qfil and is there

tried both ways
i hold power and vol- , when i hear the sound of disconnection i stop and disconnect the usb, then immediately i press vol+ and connect again the usb and nothing happens.
I think we need some files from a full backup now.
Do you have a cloud somewhere where I could possibly store a few files?
**UPDATE**
For future references this is the status right now.
@kingilein Have been helping me all this time with my phone.
What we tried?
We tried flashing some boot partitions to try to make the phone able to enter download mode.
After the flash the phone disconnected from edl mode and died (no response) no edl mode, no boot, nothing is super bricked now.
The phone battery was almost full so now we are waiting to let it drain to try to enter edl mode again.
What i'm doing now?
Every hour or so i try to turn it on holding power button for a minute or so.
2 mins later i take the phone and hold power + vol- for a minute or so.
Sometimes i pick the phone and hold power + vol- while i fast tap vol+ for 5 minutes.
Every 3-4 hours i do the same with the phone connected to the pc.
i tried different ports, and different cables.
i don't know if the phone battery is drained atm.
but i tried putting it in a wireless charger and the wireless charger is showing that the phone is charging so it can be charged.

Question Boot loop/no response to recovery menu

Hi
My G9 Power is stock ROM and is just over 2 years old, It's running fairly standard stuff and isn't rooted. . Last night I was responding to a message when it shut down. It had plenty of charge, at least 60%.
Rebooting it just results in the boot looping - splash screen for a few minutes, then blank, then restart. I deliberately left it doing that all night to exhaust the battery, which happened earlier.
It is recognising a cable is plugged in but my memory tells me that a light comes on the say it's charging, which isn't happening now - but that may be because of the stage it's in in booting (though it doesn't come on when the phone is off either). There is no haptic feedback when I plug in the cable, or sound.
So while I'm no expert I have previously replaced ROMs on an old phone, so I thought of Recovery. I can get to the menu which includes recovery, which is headed (in red bold) AP Fastboot Flash mode (Secure). The options are Restart, Bootloader, Barcodes, Recovery and Start. Barcode shows me barcodes and start goes back into the loop but Recovery doesn't do anything at all.
How can I get round this as I can't use ADP unless it's in the recovery menu can I?
Or is it dead, terminally?
Any ideas appreciated...)

Your best bet might be to follow Post #3 in this thread. You will likely lose anything that wasn't backed up. But it might be useful in salvaging your phone.
Instead of the link in that thread, you probably need the newest firmware from this: https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/motorola/cebu/official/RETGB/ (I'm guessing you're in the UK, based on your username and the spelling of "recognising"). Extract the file and then run the commands from the first link.
You will need to have platform-tools installed.
Hope it helps.

no, always take the flash commands out of flashfile.xml from insode the firmware zip.
@GeoffUK That would be my advice, too. Download the firmware and flash it. A bootloop is mostly related to a corrupt /data partition and flaahing the firmware will erase /data.
If you have any questions about it just ask.
or try this tool
Rescue and Smart Assistant (RSA) - Lenovo Support DE

Thanks for this important correction.
Thanks for the prompt and useful reply.
I'd have quite happily tried the suggestion but I can't identify the correct file in the link https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/motorola/borneo/
Also, when I plug the phone into the PC there is not a glimmer of recognition on the PC (though the phone knows it's been connected) so I don't think it is sufficiently connected to do anything with - don't forget I cant boot to any menu, recovery or otherwise. I've tried different cables etc.
Lastly, I ran it down to zero battery yesterday. I don't think it is even charging as it was plugged in overnight and on the occasion I can get a display the battery state is showing 0% (i,e, when I first plug in the cable).
I'm not about to spend a lot of time or money trying to fix it but I have just ordered a new charging port dock as that was cheap enough and seems reasonably easy to replace.
I'll report back once that is done, meantime would appreciate any more thoughts people may have.
Thanks again.

Yes (sometimes)
This is the 'bootloader screen' or 'fastboot mode'. To open that screen:
device is powered off: hold Power+Vol- to boot into fastboot mode
device is powered on (but bootloops): hold Power+Vol- for 10-15 sec. to boot into fastboot mode
In that mode you can use the LMSA to flash a new firmware. In case it won't work you have the option to flash the firmware manually (with my help).
Hi, thanks for your patience.
I can get it to boot to the exact screen you show but it won't go any further, on any button press on the phone. I can scroll up and down from Start and see the other options but selecting any of them doesn't look like it does much. The PC doesn't seem to see the phone.
But I'd be happy trying anything!! I realise the phone contents are probably lost.

Once you're getting to that screen, that's a good sign. You need to leave it at that screen and then use Rescue and Smart Assistant (RSA) on your Windows computer to reinstall the firmware on your phone.
In fastboot mode you are able to flash a new firmware. Download the tool linked above and install it. You get instructions by the tool. Try it and for any questions write a post here.
RSA is running and I am logged in but it needs the IMEI which I don't have.
It does say if you know your phone supports Fastboot you can connect directly via Fastboot mode but it doesn't explain how.
Will the tool also link me to the right firmware?
OK, I found the original box which has the IMEI on.
I'm now downloading the firmware.
Well that completed successfully but I'm afraid it didn't fix the problem....
I don't think the phone is holding charge. It was still looping at the boot screen though it has now stopped doing that and is just blank. I'll leave it on charge overnight but I'm not expecting much!
I have the charge port part arriving in the next few days so I guess that's the next step.
Thanks for your help, I'm really grateful!
Still looping?
No, it's just dead. I think if I plugged it in it'd still be looping
sounds like a hardware issue...
Yep, new phone. I'll try this part I've ordered before giving up.
Thanks for all your help though.
no problem! I hope you will manage to fix the issue.
