Hi
My Z2 is only a few days old, and today I decided to submerge it in water for the first time, so I dipped it in the pool (only a few centimeters deep), while recording a 4k video, for about 10 seconds.
Afterwards I checked the water indicator, and it was pink (or red), there was absolutely no water in the port, and I completely dried the phone before opening it. I never checked it before today though. I don't understand why this has happened, because the phone has been working fine for hours now. There seems to be no damage at all, everything is working. I have attached a photo. Should I be worried?
Yes, this potentialy means your flaps werent closed properly or if close then they arent water tight

Thank's for the reply, the flaps were definitely closed properly, and the phone has suffered no damage, could it just have been a little bit of water that got through?

Maybe it happened after I opened the flap, some of the water that was still around the flap probably got in.

It's under the micro sd card slot flap, and visible when you pull out the little plastic card with information on it, from the back.

That's weird, but it is very small, and your indicator is probably still white. You should look for it under a bright light.

I think I'm getting to see. It gets stuck on the logic board of the device. He is very long! Is white!
My device doesn't have a warranty anyway, so I guess this isn't that big of an issue for me, especially since the device is working perfectly.
I'll just be more careful next time with the flaps, I guess some water got in when I opened them afterwards.

Sony give 2 year warrenty with all xperias
All you need is proof of purchase, this means you can send your Z2 into sony service for free if your device is within 2 years of purchase, however it needs to be a actual problem and not a "act of god" as sony puts it

Is there only one water indicator in the z2?
That's not the water indicator. It's the reset button. There is no water indicator stripe visible on the external of the Z2.

It must be, the reset button is situated in the charging port and sim card slot flap, on the other side of the device.

You're right, sorry about that, didn't see the photo you attached properly. Anyways, I checked mine and this stripe is buried very deep inside and it's also red. But my phone has never been washed / submerged with water. So maybe it's not the water indicator after all.
Edit: looked through pictures of a disassembled Z2 but no sign of this stripe on the motherboard.

That's odd, maybe you're right.
I've never submerged my Z2 nor even had it in moist conditions, and the little flap is red. And indeed looking at the disassembly pictures, I can't seem to locate that little slip in the pictures so whatever it is, I doubt it's a moisture detector.
It is a moisture detector my z2 was mucky so I cleaned it with a cotton bud I already knew the indicator was there (which was white) then I used a damp cotton but and next thing I had pnk dye on it I looked and I tripped the indicator by mistake with the bud :silly:
So it's definitely a water indicator
Interesting - mine is 3 weeks old, has never been exposed to water and also has the red strip.

So I just got a new Galaxy S3.
It hasn't been a day and i've noticed a kind of a shade that looks like the "super amoled" logo that's on the sticker that you peel off.
I really hadn't noticed it at first but now it's really annoying on white background.
I've found a picture on the web so that you guys can see my problem.
http://img41.imageshack.us/img41/3724/img2689su.jpg
Is there any way to get rid of this? I've tried running so called burn in fix apps but none of them worked.
I've also tried using wet wipes but it didn't remove it.. so It's not stains or anything and it appears like its burnt on the screen
Everything else is great about this phone but it's just this shade that looks like "c" that annoys me!
I have 6 months warranty but my dad bought it in Japan and he just returned from there and it's not like he's there every month so it's a bit of a problem.
If you have any solutions or if anyone here encountered the same thing please please share your experience.
Thanks in advance!

no alcohol is not dangerous (or any other liquid), as long as you do not let it seep through the sides of the phone.
I don't think that mark is inside, the plastic cover is outside and I don't imagine ever seeing a screen saver image of that type unless you have used one...
Hmmmm, its not only the c, you can see inside of the c the word amoled and on the top you can see the word galaxy s3

No not that I know of, my father took it off.
Anyway how silly it is to put sticker on the phone if there is a risk to get burn in because of sun light?? this is ridiculous from them!
at least warn the customers.
I don't know.. it's not like a stain or something because it seems imprinted inside the screen ;(
and that photo is not mine but I do have that same 'C' right in the same location obviously from the sticker

Return it or get it exchanged. That screen got exposed to sunlight while having the sticker on.
Probably a display unit (which you would not want to have).

Ship or take to them .
Fact is standard warranty from a vendor is usually 12 months standard limited warranty from Samsung is 24 months .

According to their website there is also 6 months limited japan warranty.
I will contact them and I will also add pictures of the phone and all of the receipts..
And I see that when you ship the item to them you need to fill an RMA form so that no additional customs will be charged.
Hi All,
Got mine today after a long battle with the M8 and its many problems. . .
I have noticed mine has a gap in the top right like many others have but has anyone been in for a waterproof test yet?
In all honestly i'm just curious to know rather then it being a problem for me as I dont have the desire to be dipping into water or swim with it.
It doesnt bother me although I know its not nice having it there but again it doesnt look as bad as the way the original HTC One had gaps open round the metal.
So yep anyone concerned or even taken it to a Sony centre?
Cheers
Mine doesn't have any gap. Well not that I can see. I will not risking trying to dip in in water. Even though it is supposed to be waterproof I am not sure they will cover it.

yeah i dont have the desire as I say to be dipping into water . .its seems more ppl have the gap then others . ..
coming from the M8 with multiple scuffs and marks on the metal out the box its really pleasing that its just a gap i have as it doesnt look bad but still the waterproof protection and dust may still be affected by this.
plus I plan to put a case on mine in the end so the gap will be covered up anyway . .I know I shudnt ave to cover it but Im never gonna be carrying a glass phone naked!
Where did you order yours? Maybe you can get it exchanged and hope to get one of the newer batches?
It was phone's 4 u in UK so not the best place to get phone's in my experience so far.. I have been advised to go into store so staff can have a look...

Has it ever been proven that the 'gap' is actually a problem? People seem to get them replaced without ever testing, could be all for nothing?

I believe due to the scarcity of Sony stores in certain areas that people just decide to not bother testing and just sent it back.
Don't know if this is related but anyone who has the gap issue, is the camera lens slightly off centre too? Mine is (although it doesn't affect the camera quality).
I'm not sure what I should do because I've only recently realised I have the very minute gap at the top right but I got my phone on the 22nd of April through mobiles.co.uk so I wonder if I can simply go to a carphone warehouse shop to discuss it or if I have to do it through mobile.co.uk.

But i don't think this small gap become cause of water damage!
i mean this gap is in surface of phone and it s not like hole that connect outside to inside of phone!
so it s just ugly...

I have the gap issue, there is a slight gap on the front top right & a more noticeable one on the front bottom left, I didn't spot it at first but a mate that was admiring the phone did as he spotted a small bit of tobacco trapped between the gap & the bezel.

Hi guys i was using my z2 in total dark and just found out that screen backlight is leaking from magnetic charging port of the phone.
It seems like there's small gap between the port and lcd.
My concern is that it might affect waterproof function of the phone. (Maybe my z2 is a defected unit.. )
can you guys check if backlight from the screen leaks through magnetic charging port of your z2?
Thanks

No leak too.
If you have the white model and you set your screen brightness to 100% (with no adaptive), you can actually see the screen's backlight bleeding through even in the USB port area.
It looks like it may just be backlight bleeding through the plastic bit. I'll give it a go tonight in the dark with 100% brightness and update you on it.
---------- Post added at 11:34 AM ---------- Previous post was at 11:27 AM ----------
I just had a look with the phone in a dark drawer and I can see the bleed you're talking about. It's a small gap between the metal frame and the plastic of the magnetic dock.
I am just assuming it's light going through the white plastic more than anything else.
For those who reported no such bleed, what colour is your Z2?

I also have a white Xperia Z2 and I DO have backlight bleeding through the magnetic charging port. It's very faint, but it's definitely a sliver of light bleeding through the plastic bit of the frame.
Mine has also backlight bleeding through the magnetic port. As i have tested, the waterproofing of my phone is not affected by this issue.

Right when I turned it on and configured the settings, I dunked it in a sink full of water. Next day, tried it in a swimming pool.
Well, maybe need to try it then
I did with my white one, worked great. My black one died and I'm still fighting for a refund... Check the screen gaps very closely and give it a whirl.
The way I look at the whole water resistance thing with my Z2 is, if I get caught on the phone in the rain I won't worry about it, thats as far as my testing water resistance will ever go
I use it as a party trick but or if uninformed people are around i go out of my way without saying a word to them is turn on tap and wait a few seconds as they will generally look up from whatever they were doing and then i proceed to slowly "clean it" under the tap, I get all sort of response thes main ones being *gasps* or "are you crazy wtf." then explain it and show its working right after. If you want to make sure your covered by warranty take video of you firmly pressing the flaps down before proceeding with the above cause in the water proof booklet or chapter (cant rember what it which it was) it says if any dust or water is found beneath the flaps the warranty is void. which in my mind translates to even if the flaps seal was broken or faulty from the start you are officially screwed
This is what happened to me
I also bought My new Xperia Z2 from Saudi Arabia. It was w20 model had screen gaps issue both on front and back . Bought it from Sony store and they said that it will not effect waterproofness of the device. Even then i was careful but after a month it was full of finger prints and i decided to wash it and unfortunately water went inside . All flaps were closed and i double checked it . When i took it to service center they said no warranty if water went inside and they will send it to Dubai please check back after 2 weeks.
I posted on Facebook as they may help me but this was their reply was we are sorry and nothing else

Fezan, I can understand that you were saving for it quite a long time but if you did, why did you risk and put it into water?
The problem is, that Sony advertises this phone as IP58 resistant BUT the warranty does not work if water gets inside the phone... They secured themselves...
I understand your frustration though, you just put it under the tap water and saw what happens. Unfortunately you should have done it in Sony store where a representative would check for waterproofnes of the phone, if you do it by yourself, they will hardly ever warrant it.
Even though this phone is supposed to be water proof, I do not intend to test this waterproofness, ever! Not intentionally, at least...

Well You can say its foolish of me to do so. but its one of the main selling feature of Xperia Z line phones and tablet. You have water test markers - you can see them if you open flaps.
If those markers become red, you haven't closed flaps right and your warranty won't be accepted.
But!!!
If those stickers are still white - it's not your mistake and Sony MUST accept warranty.
This device is waterproof and water resistant and you can go diving with it...
Will you do that or not, that's your thing but you have every right to do that.
Only, don't go to sea with it - dive in pool or lake
Salt could cause short-circuit and you'll not have your warranty rights...

Well, I guess you are right but what IF you closed the flaps correctly and one of the seals was bad and the water got inside anyway and marked the marker? This can happen too.
Waterproofness was not the main selling point for me, anyway, I would not risk submerging a 600 Euro worth of a device which was designed to be a phone not a completely waterproof camera
Anyway, I wish you good luck with Sony when going through the warranty process, I hope everything goes fine...

Well You can say its foolish of me to do so. but its one of the main selling feature of Xperia Z line phones and tablet. Imagine if you bought iPhone 5s and fingerprint scanner is completely not working or if phone was advertised with retina display but had lower resolution screen. I know i had a faulty unit but sony support should take that into consideration

I am not saying you are foolish, maybe it is just me but I am very cautious with my electronics and I don't think I would risk submerging this phone into water. If it was a camera or a device specifically designed to be used under water then sure, why not.
By designed to be used in water I mean something that is well sealed and does not rely on some flaps, which deteriorate proportionally to the number of times you open them etc. I accept the fact that this phone is said to be waterproof but I bought it to be used as a phone and there is just too many catches in the warranty print and too many other things can go wrong.
@valdigre
Totally agree...
I don't need Z2 in swimming pool as well but if I'm not sure for waterproof I would take my device and one bucket with water and do test in the store or service center

A few days after getting mine I took it to a water park and kept it in the pools and down the water slides and all with no problems... Even sat in a hot tub for 20 minutes. Very happy with this device.

I just bought a Z2. Very happy with it. But do I need to test it underwater?
Did any of you do that?

Despite the unwise adverts of Sony I tend to see this -water resistance- as a safeguard against accidental water damage. This is NOT an industrial designed device meant for the work place, the Z2 is very much a domestic mobile and I tend to avoid contact with water. I am confident the Z2 is water resistant to the given specifications and feel comfortable using it in the rain etc.
I sincerely think those who take any mobile into the shower ....................well enough said, I shower to wash I cant see why one needs to do such a thing. We all need our personal space and if one cant shower in peace I think its time to revise our daily work patters.
Sea water is a big no no because of the salt as are swimming pools due to chemicals. These facts are mentioned in the manual.
I don't 'drop test' my devices either. I really don't need to confirm what I already know.

You invalidated your warranty. Read your manual..............CAREFULLY.....
Certainly don't tell Sony what you did when you have a problem.

Hi Everyone,
So I was on holiday with my beloved Ultra, and using it in the pool. Cool thing is, this phone is waterproof! That's what I thought until I got on the plane a few hours later and upon trying to use my phablet the touch screen stopped responding. It seemed to function OK, I just couldn't unlock it or use it as there was some kind of hyperactive spectre flying around inside making it seem like the touchscreen was possessed. I looked a little closer, and not only was there condensation visible in both camera lenses, but upon opening the usb cover there was also moisture inside there. I opened the other side, and the moisture indicator was still white, so I think the problem was specifically with the usb port cover.
Anyway, it's not covered under any kind of warranty as I bought it overseas, and I have taken it to a repair shop who confirmed that it's water damaged and that they would need to fix the damaged USB port and replace the screen to make it work again. I just want to buy a new one as it would be cheaper than getting it fixed, but I have some data/apps on the old one I don't want to lose. Any suggestions on the best approach? If the shop can read the eMMC and back it up, could I use that to restore data/apps onto a new phone, or am I better off just getting it fixed...
Advice/opinions appreciated.
it's a marketing trick. they are not actually waterproof.
I guess this guy's luck was bad. Mine had contact with water a couple of times and thankfully it lived upto its waterproofness promise

This is a stupid reply. I brought it with me in the pool with my kids, made photos and videos underwater (touch block + volume rocker), no problems at all.
Same goes with my wife's Z.
Of course, if you go swimming with the USB flap open, well, you're an idiot. (Not that I accuse OP of being one, just that 80% of the time when I saw someone with a faulty phone/laptop/tablet it was not working because of THEM).

Hopefully someone replies with some advice that is actually helpful... FYI I have used it in the pool (and had it underwater) multiple times before without problems. I always make sure the seals are sitting properly when I close them so I am doubtful it was user error...
The usb port is fully brpken?
I think it's corroded, but definitey doesn't work.

without usb and screen it will be difficult for you to get data off yourself.

good for you, you were lucky. on the xperia forums and on here, there are many MANY people who had their phones damaged from water. Are ALL of them at fault?
however, call sony and ask them (i did):
1) what *guarantee* is there that with the flaps closed the phone will not receive water damage? they will answer none. There is no case where the warranty will cover water damage. Whether it's your fault or the phone's fault, it is irrelevant to sony. they will NOT cover it.
2) what happens if, after *normal use*... notice this: *normal use*, NOT abuse, the flaps lose their sealing ability? Does the warranty cover it? No. Warranty does NOT cover "normal use wear". Which means the flaps WILL lose their sealing ability and you end up with a non-waterproof phone. How soon? NOONE KNOWS because there is no way to actually TEST it, at least not as a USER. You MIGHT be able to have it tested at sony... but that would mean testing it every. single. time. you close any of the flaps...
your phone, at any given point, MAY or MAY NOT be waterproof. However, since you have no way to test it, it means that you CAN NOT TRUST it to be waterproof, which is, of course, means you have to treat it as NOT waterproof.
which, in the end, means the phone is not waterproof.
as a sidenote, keep any and all profanities to yourself
Blah blah. The phone is waterproof. No need to be all technical and stuff. Can it be used in water for a certain period of time? Yes.
Your post reminds me of when ships were first being built. If a boat ends up sinking from wear and tear does that mean it wasn't a floating device? Also wear and tear....that's why we check our cars at a set time for periodic maintenance because of wear and tear.
I got lax with mine and took it in the shower and got water in it, USB flap is worn. Not the companies, because I didn't take the necessary steps to make sure my phone was periodically maintained.
Just my 2 cents...
