When I use the application manager, I see that 1.8GB are occupied out of 2GB available. This of course causes issues when installing apps and brings up a warning notifications that some system services may malfunction. However, if I sum the memory taken by my apps, I come up at 1GB, and many of these apps have been moved to the SD card.
I've tried to use Clean Master to free space, but without much success.
So I want to cleanup files manually. What partitions on the phone's system are the ones in the 2GB space? Is it the root partition?

Clean master is big fake. Use link2SD and wipe cache

Hoping someone can help me understand the implications of using the above methods of backup as it relates to device performance and restore.
First is a question about how Android memory works. I'm running Virtuous Unity 2.39 on an Inspire. According to TiBu my System ROM is 575MB with 40.4MB free, 1.21GB internal with 648 free. The system memory manager says I have 180MB of memory available. So, I'm not sure which memory is which. What's used for storage, and what's used for runtime of programs? Am I correct to assume that if I move programs from internal memory to storage that I'll be able to run more apps at any given time?
Here are my questions.
Will moving some (larger) apps like CoPilot (33MB), Documents2Go (11MB), SPB Wallet (12MB) and infrequently used utilities like SpeedTest benefit the handset performance in any real way, or am I over-thinking this?
If the answer to the above is 'yes', there is a performance gain, what happens when I do a Nandroid or TiBu backup in preparation for a ROM upgrade? I know that TiBu has the setting 'Restore backups to... Original Location' as one of the options. Does this mean I could theoretically restore apps to an entirely new (blank) card if need be?
Will using a utility like D2SD (if I partition my card with an EXT4 segment) likewise help in any substantial way?
How can I help organize the apps and data on the card so that it reduces 'clutter' and presents a more easily managed folder structure to find things that I need?
Thanks in advance for your help!
Anyone out there have thoughts on this?
The system ROM, is the memory used by the custom rom. It stores all the files the rom needs to run. The internal memory is the memory used for storage by all the apps, etc. you have. The 180mb you had free, is the RAM. You'll notice it'll be at different amounts (depending on how many things are running, and how resource consuming the are).
1. Yes, but only if your internal memory is very low (low enough to get the "low space" warning (or at least close to that).
2. No (not fully). Some may be restored fine but some would be corrupted.
3. Only if your device's internal memory (in total) is low.
4. Usually when you move an app to the SD card, they automatically organize themselves in one folder called ".android_secure"
Hope this clarifies some things for you .

I appreciate your reply.
So, there wouldn't be any performance improvement if I were to free up more RAM or perhaps create an EXT4 partition on the SD card for system use?

Yes there will be a performance gain if you free up RAM but creating an EXT4 partition does not contribute to that. That partition will only be for storage.
Hi
Sorry not a high tech question but would appreciate some help
Re. my viewpad 7
Seems to be constantly short of inbuilt memory.
(should be 512mb)
was down to zero today though have not addded anything for a while.
Clearing cache and history via browser took it back up to 8 mb but already with an hours use down to 6mb again.
Have moved everything that Apps manager allows over to the (16GB) SD card, which still has lots of space.
Neither of the "File Explorer" or "Settings/SD card and phone storage" routes let me actually see what's in phone memory.
Pad is "as bought" re rom's etc
Would appreciate any help.
thx
Russ
It's got 512mb total, which is split over different partitions.
You are running out of space on the /data partition, try uninstalling some apps, or use an app like apps2sd to move some to your sd card.
Thanks for quick response but have tried deleting a few apps and have already moved everything that can be moved onto sd card
have downloaded a couple of versions of app2sd apps 2sd etc but they do not offer any more suggestions on apps that can be moved as I say I have aready moved all that seem moveable
It does seem that it's some sort of data thats the problem but I can't see into the inbuilt memory to see what data it is or from what app

It is stupid Android. When you move apps to SD, than still some (usualy bigger) parts is still in internal memory. When you move apps to SD, than info about occupied space is valid only for occupied space on SD by the apps. If you want to know how big is the application than you have to move back to internal memory, than info is correct.
Also some updating of system apss can consume very big space of internal memory. For example Aldiko can occupy 6MB !!!!
The problem is, when you install a new app either from Android Market, Amazon App Store or anywhere else, the system retains the .apk install file somewhere in memory. I'm yet to find where those files are stored.
You can use a file manager like Astro File manager to see all the files on your viewpad 7's internal memory however, manipulating those files is a bit trickier. I thought I found them in a \sys\data directory or something like that but the system refuses to let me delete them.
Does anyone know for certain where these .apk files are stored. I've deleted/moved everything I can and am down to the apps that I need on the unit. If I have to delete more, then there is no sense having a small form-factor tablet. The space that is being used is far above the applications that I have installed so there has to be garbage files somewhere that need cleaned up.
I got a message saying I was getting low on space. I bought a program call SD Maid which tells me I've used 1.4 GB out of 1.97 GB. It has an option called "CORPSE FINDER" which comes up with some files like:
com.motorola.batterymonitor
com.motorola.blur.contacts.deferred
com.motorola.android.wmdrm.webpush
com.motorola.android.simmanager
com.mot.readout
com.motorola.dock.provider
these files are located in /data/data/
and /data/data/.com.mot.readout/lib
and /data/data/com.motorola.dock.DesktopDock/shared_prefs/com.motorola.dock
Is is OK to delete these files?
Are there other obvious files I can delete off the phone?
Another app called FREE SPACE tells me I have used 93% of system space or 298MB out of 319MB available. Is there a way to increase the available space?
Thanks for any suggestions
What? Move apps to internal memory if you need space.
How can you fill up 10GB?
Agreed, move apps to internal storage. And you can use DiskUsage to see exactly what is taking up how much space and delete it.
no effect
Moving apps to external SD or uninstalling apps has NO EFFECT on the SYSTEM space, according to FreeSpace (ROOT). After uninstalling apps the space used by the SYSTEM remains unchanged at 93%:
size: 319.5 MB
used: 298.5 MB
free: 20.9 MB
Uninstalling apps or widgets decreases the space used by DATA which currently is:
size: 2015.8 MB
used: 1371.8 MB
free: 643.9 MB
So the issue is how to decrease space used by the (android) SYSTEM.
thanks
nothing user created is being stored on the /system partition. that partition is only for the ROM itself, all your customizations go to /data partition (except if you modify your /system partition with root access and adb/terminal/root explorer) you shouldnt be bothered about the free space in the /system partition. the /system partition is supposed to stay as it is throughout your usage - except if you flash another rom or mod this one. thats it
free space
Thanks for your info. I am rooted, and installed root explorer, but thats it. I have recently gotten the laptop dock. The only reason this came up was because of a message about low space in my drop down menu. I have a lot of apps installed but have ample space in all partitions except the system partition. I didn't write the message down, but if it comes up again I will in order to get an idea of where its coming from.
WAIT. THAT's IT.....the laptop dock. That message must have come from using the dock !!
I will confirm next time it happens......
thanks guys.
The message is about the Ram consumption, which the webdock consumes rather fast with several programs open (firefox with many tabs, open office and so on)
Several weeks ago I installed the Avatarrom with Jelly Bean 4.2 on my Galaxy S2 I9100. At first I was very pleased with everything. It was much faster, and in many ways better. Since then I've installed two updates. I'm constantly running out of memory. I cannot read my Gmail using the default gmail app anymore (your device doesn't have enough storage space to sync). Updating apps in the playstore doesn't work (Insufficient storage available). I removed many apps, cleared the general cache and that of many apps, moved numerous apps to the external SD, and that freed up enough memory to get the rest working, but not for long. With the second update, things seemed improved and I could open gmail again, but only for two days.
I've installed the app DiskUsage. This reports the following:
App storage (system ram I suppose)
Total 2015 MB
System data: 1645 MB
Applications: 309 MB
Free: 60 MB
Storage card
Total 11781 MB
Free 4900 MB
Storage SD card
total 14972 MB
6700 MB free
If I remember correctly the system data was "only" 1200MB when installing the avatarrom. Now it's 1645MB. How can that be? My phone has 2GB system memory, and if I'm correct there are not many phones with more than that. So if it grows 200MB with each update, something's wrong, isn't it? Or am I missing something? Should I clear some other cache or download folder? Does the free space on the storage card make a difference? Can I increase the system memory space, like resizing a partition?

Clear the cache files occasionally, every app generates cache data like Chrome Browser can generate more than 100mb of cache over a period of time.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda app-developers app
Many apps store data on the system /data partition, the only chance to get more free space in the standard way is:
- remove unused apps
- move apps and/or data to sd (but not all apps will alow that)
This should give you some additional free memory, but yes, I agree, the /data partition is a bit small.
Hey, my friend has the same problem.
I installed him 3 different 4.1 JB roms, but the problem is same in all 3 roms.
We did factory reset and also wiped phone in recovery mode, but it didn't help.
We also tried this with sd card in phone and without sd card with phone, no difference at all.
What should my friend do to fix this?
I'm running the latest CM snapshot. I've been getting the infamous "Insufficient Storage Available" error for a while not, usually with chrome. There are various solutions. The "delete /data/app-lib/<app>/lib" solution was working ok for me but I can no longer find chrome in there anymore for some reason. I've already moved every app that can be moved to the "internal" SD card. All the "solutions" are really just workarounds trying to clear space.
Is it possible to increase the size of the partition by re partitioning the internal storage?

I know that apps can be moved to the SD card. That isnt a solution nor my question.
I'm asking of the internal storage can be repartitioned
I'm having the same issue. I desperately need to reparation my phone.
i'm running viper rom with the sdcard swap mode.
i'm now back to getting insufficient memory messages when trying to update apps or sometimes run apps. it shows i still have plenty of free memory... i have been moving apps to sd card and that works for a little while.

You need to look at internal storage, not SD card storage.
So I did system dump today to explore the files on my computer see what's hogging all of my space.
Background: I have only have 13 apps installed.
What I found is that my data/data is 346 MB and my data/delvik-cache is 452 MB.
So the files installed by CM are getting more numerous and of greater size. Not sure what to do to solve this problem.

same issue here. davlik cache is similar to a cache of your applications so they start faster. So it doesnt matter if you move apps to SD, you'll still have davlik.
Also, many apps will still store data in internal memory eventhough the app itself is on SD. I wish there were a way to move the data.
Or as I initially suggested, re-partitioning.

well, there isn't ANY easy re-partitioning tool for android out in the wild that i KNOW of ... but, (at least to let you know) ... I'm currently still trying to _hack_ something together similar to the internal storage-partition upgrades that the other HTC One devices with MSM8960 recieved ... where they officially unified the /user partition with the internal /sd-card (fat) partition! ... it might take a few weeks until i have something to show around (as work keeps me very busy throughout the week), but i'm working on it.
just as a quick question so CM currently DOES put it's dalvik to the /user partition??? i thought they put it to /cache??? (at least on CM10.1 and CM10.2) ................ so feedback would be highly welcome
