It's corrosion, probably caused by sweat from your wrist. You can clean it somewhat with a pencil eraser and/or some contact/TV tuner cleaner.
I don't have this on my Gear 2 at all, but it seems to be quite prevalent on the G watch. At this rate, it might be considered a defect. You might want to contact LG to see about a recall or refund.

Yea that's what I assumed was the cause. I'll give the eraser thing a try.
Thanks!!!

I have to clean mine they keep going brown. calling google tomorrow.

Out of the 5 pins, two have lost their gold plating (2nd and 3rd from the top). The watch still charges and I can connect to it through the cradle, so I am not worried about it.

Got a replacement from Google.

After how long has the problem started appearing?

Several blogs are reporting about this issue. My contacts also start to become brown

Mine only took about a week but it depends on your outdoor activities. It definitely has to do with your sweat. Also noticed after a couple of days it rubs off.

I don't have this watch, but according to the comments in this Android Police story, today's update to KMV78Y will/might cut the current to the charging pins when it's not in the charging dock.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/08/01/some-lg-g-watch-owners-are-getting-an-ota-update-to-kmv78y/
Recently it has come to our attention that a small number of G Watch devices have been reported to have developed discoloration and residue buildup on the terminal pins located on the back. While completely safe and unlikely to affect charging, LG will be rolling out a maintenance release over the next few days that will disable the current when the G Watch is not in the charging dock. The maintenance release will be rolled out automatically over-the-air to all G Watch owners. We thank G Watch users for their patience and apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

This is nice to hear. Hopefully its not a fake But anyways thanks for the info.
My G Watch does not have this issue so far (after 3 days using it now)- But I feel more comofortable when this Update will solve this issue before it will appear on my device.

Anybody got the update that supposedly fixes the corrosion? Does it fix the problem?

I have latest update 4.4.W.1 (KGW42Q) but my contacts are brows, my hand burns and I measured voltage about 1.7V on the pins

OWL Car Pad (Qi Car Charger)

Hey guys,
I went out on a limb and bought the OWL car charger+dock for my DNA.
There is a bunch of discussion on the item here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2029734 along with plenty of pictures.
I wanted to let you guys know some specifics for the DNA:
1. The phone fits perfectly into the clip. I don't have any cases, so I can't test that, but naked the phone fits like a glove and is very secure, even upside down.
2. Even the "second generation" of charger still does not put out enough juice for the DNA, even with the phone at idle.
I have emailed Moon and will update this thread when I hear back from him. I am thinking the problem might have something to do with the controller inside the charger. It switches to red (charging) momentarily when the phone is inserted, but then switches back to green (full).

Update 1: Moon has emailed back already to assure me that if the charger doesn't work, he will do what it takes to make it right.
I am hoping we can figure out a way to make the phone work in the charger, since I love the design and the convenience of Qi...
awesome! I have been wondering if it works for our phone since I saw the post you linked above about a week ago. I emailed moon about it, but he was unsure. I'm glad that someone confirmed what I have been wondering. Thanks again
I'm also looking forward to more info on this. Going through the website I couldn't quite follow if it worked or not.
Update 2:
The Qi charging coil built into the CarPad does work to charge the HTC DNA, unfortunately the coil is positioned about 0.5" too low for the phone.
Moon is working on an adjustment to the circuit board to re-position the charging coil.
Tonight I am going to take a look at temperatures during charging. With the screen turned on the battery did get 3-4°C warmer than normal on the Nokia Qi charger, but it was a pretty short charge. I am going to try leaving the screen turned on and the phone charging on the CarPad tonight for a couple of hours to see the charge rate and temperature change.
Other news:
There does not seem to be any scuffing, scratching, or denting of the phone's finish caused by inserting and removing from the clip. I had worried that the spring arms on the side might hurt the matte finish on the back of the phone, but so far I don't see any changes.
Thanks guys,
Ben
thanks for the update, keep us posted. in car qi charging is very interesting.

Thanks, I got a reply from Moon that he thinks the "autopad" will be the option for the DNA and he'll let me know when it is available. I will post info here if I hear back.
http://owlpad.net/owl-autopad/
Update 3:
Good news tonight. First, I've done a temperature test using the phone at room temperature. With navigation, LTE, and the screen constantly on the CarPad provides moderage charge (+200mAh) and does not cause excessively high heat (under 45°C). This is comparable with the 43°C I saw with the Nokia Qi charger while watching a Netflix Stream.
With the screen off the temperature is also pretty normal (35°C) so I think the coil is good.
Moon at Owl Chargers tells me that he may add a little to the coil to make it more consistent on the charging, and he is going to create a new PCB that has the coil positioned 1/2" higher so that it will line up properly with the DNA.
It sounds like this change could happen pretty quickly, but I will let you know when I have the test board in hand.
Thanks guys,
Ben
Please keep the updates coming, thanks!
Hey everyone, sorry for a few days of delay.
I talked to Moon this morning and he thinks they should have the test board created by the beginning of next week. He is moving the charging coil up to line up better with both the DNA and the Galaxy S3, and he is upgrading to a bigger charging coil to presumably give better charging efficiency.
I have removed the standard charging coil from the phone holding base and have been using it as a standard desktop charger for the last few days (with the Owl-Pad supplied AC Adapter). It has been working well for that as long as I position the phone properly, so with any luck the new board should fix the problem in the car mount.
I will let you guys know when the new part ships, and will be sure to take pictures of the new versus old board.
Thanks,
Ben
Thanks for the updates.
Sudo make me a sandwich.
Good news from Moon at OWL Pad today, the new circuit board is complete, his testing looks good, and he is shipping it out to me to test on the DNA tomorrow.
I will update everyone here with pictures once I have the new board and have been able to try it out, but Moon posted some initial tests on the Galaxy S3 and Note 2 which both charge at the higher position. Those tests looked good so I have to think it will work on the DNA as well.
Thanks all,
Ben
(You can see my pictures and charging screenshots on the OwlPad site)

I'm not sure how he would do that. I'm sure he has a bunch of the units already boxed up from the last production run. It might be that he has to ship the old unit and the new board separate. Honestly, changing the board was incredibly easy. There are four screws and then the old board just lifts out and the new one drops in.
When the new one comes in I had planned on putting up pictures showing how to remove the old one and install the new one.

I think I'd love to get both boards since then I'd be prepared if my next phone requires the "other" position.

Looks like the set is for sale for the DNA on the web page now. Still sounds like he's waiting for test results but you go through with an order now if you want.
Hey Guys,
I got the unit in the mail when I got home from work (30 minutes ago).
So far everything looks GREAT!
I am running temperature and charging tests now, but the new coil position looks perfect, and I'm getting as much or possibly more current out of the OWL charger than I was getting out of the Nokia.
Tonight I should have pictures and screen shots available from my early tests, but I have to say that everything looks great so far.
I also want to add that the level of customer service and responsiveness from Moon at OWL charging was incredible. If I got service half as good from the companies I do business with in the US I would be amazed, and these folks are having to deal with me from the other side of the world. I have absolutely no ties with their company, and hadn't even spoken to them to ask if the charger worked for my phone before I ordered, but they went above and beyond any expectations in getting this charger working.
Once I have a few hours charging I can fill in the remaining details (temperatures, approximate charge time, etc), but right now I would say the newest version is a huge success!

Is the Z2 really THIS bad?

It's hard for me to imagine a Sony product that isn't made of the highest quality.
When browsing around the Sony forums and other places on the net, I keep seeing the same complaints. The magnetic charging ports are falling out which is allowing water to leak into the phone, ruining the phone. The phone also shuts down after downloading a lot of data over LTE or recording with the camera, due to overheating. I also see reports of people being unable to hold conversations because one party can not hear the other.
Are these people over exaggerating or are these real complaints? I was just ready to pull the trigger on one when I started seeing all of this stuff. Can anyone chime in that has had their phone over 1 month and has ZERO issues with it? Maybe there are just a select few that got a bad batch or something.
If you post can you also please post when you bought the phone or when you think it was manufactured. Maybe we can narrow this down to a time frame or specific region.
Just try to buy week 22 or higer (you have a little sticker that you pull out in sdcard compartment.
Yes, there are some things that we wouldn't expect from Sony but that was older batches.
I can record 5 min 4K video so can't see problem here.
All other manufacturers limited 4K to 5min, that's why they didn't have same problems.
Sony decided not to limit duration, so sometimes there will be overheating msg and closing camera.
I don't have any problem you said, I know for those guys and I'm sure that's all true but that's not general flaw and issue, that's perfectly normal...
If you aren't satisfied with Z2 you can always return in or change for another device...

I came from M8 and S5, after having the z2 for 2 months, there are couple things I really don't like about the z2, it is noticeably slower, say you click on the camera icon, it doesn't come on instantaneously, the in call voice quality and speaker phone are only ok, not great, volume is a bit on the low side.
The in call quality and dim volume is a deal breaker for me, I am looking to switch to the G3 or Note 4.

Well a huge problem is that I live in the USA and Sony will not cover any manufacture defect because there is zero warranty coverage in the US. I went through this with a Motorola phone I bought from Canada once.
So how long have you had your phone? Do you use the magnetic charging connector at all?

Yea I know that's why I wanted to ask around and see how many people weren't having problems. To me its got the best specs by far of any phone. I think the sound issues and maybe a bit of lag can be fixed with custom roms and what not. I just don't want to end up with the charging port popping out and then I don't realize it and go for a swim. The phone is going to cost me a lot of money and I won't have a warranty.

My advice - don't pay 600-800$ for device without warranty.
You never know..
I have device for a two months, I had Z1 (still have it) and I don't have any problems with both.
I totally agree with that post - nobody will open thread - my device is working perfectly -
All you can see here is problems and guys seeking for help but that doesn't mean it's faulty device.
As I said, I'm perfectly satisfied with Xperia Line and will buy Z3 as well...

Well that sounds absolutely great! I just ordered a white one from Amazon.com after reading all the great reviews on it. People are saying its the best phone they have ever used. I also picked up a charging dock. May need to get a second one but we will see. Does the phone come with a magnetic charging cable or a regular micro-USB cable?
I don't own a Z2, but what I can say is that that magnetic conector thing is half Sony's fault, half use of cheap third party cables's fault.
AFAIK, the connector wasn't meant to be used with cables, but only on stationary charging docks. The constant movement of the cable and device while using the device while charge might be the culprit to "invoke" both parties's fault I mentioned above.

I haven't heard anything about any Z2s shutting down from overheating, the camera closing on over temp is common though. How much time it takes before it hits the set point depends on a lot of variables, but basically the higher the ambient temp and/or the more heat generation inside phone(using data, high CPU loads, continuous live view, etc) prior/during camera use will impact it. I live in a warm region and when testing I got 6min of 4k before hitting alarm.
My phone is put on a magnetic dock every night and everytime I get in my and my port is doing fine.
My phone is from week 17 and has a the of center issues but everything works fine.
I didn't add a squaretrade warranty (not sure if could since didn't add it within 30 days of purchase), if I have a warranty issue prior to the US having parts I'll just send it to it's retail country.

I have w17 version and i haven't encountered any defects of any kind. This phone is awesome !
I have a week 20 phone without any issues and I consider it a fantastic device! come from note 1.
I've had my Z2 for a month now and couldn't be happier. No problems with over heating (Haven't done the 4K recording thing though), plug in my magnetic charge cable overnight (well, mostly every other night - what an awesome battery!).
I immediately installed Nova and have settled on Smart Launcher pro.
Also, was too impatient for OTA .402 update, so I did that myself.
When Sony support stops, I'll probably go CM but, for the moment, it's all good.

I came to Z2 from Galaxy Note 3, before that I had HTC One.
Z2 is the best for me among the 3 devices, it is not ideal but ticks all my boxes.
I have a 14W17 and while it gets warm when recording 4K, I did not manage to overheat it. I made a test yesterday just to check out, Ireland, Dublin, around 20 degrees yesterday in the shadow. I was walking in the sun and recording for 5 minutes, 4k video with steady shot, so even more demanding for internals. The phone was warmish, but not as hot as I thought.
Afterwards I checked and the CPU temp was 61 degrees while battery temp was 37 degrees, so yes, it gets warm but not so hot.
What was making this phone really hot was the AR mode or the special effects app, that lets you put things like falling satelite, ghosts and other stuff postprocessing. Those two made the phone hot, but nothing else is able to make mine this hot and I do not care about those two modes anyway.
I would really recommend this phone but I would never buy it without any kind of warranty. I would never buy piece of electronics that is that expensive, without any kind of warranty.
Anyway, look at M8 forum, Samsung forums. Those people that are happy, usually don't praise the phone on forums, but those that have problems - do... I was really worried and almost certain, I would not buy Sony but I said oh well, let's try something new (never had Sony phone before, only sony-ericsson). I do not regret it for now, even just for battery life it was worth it for me, I don't care about waterproofness whatsoever.
Noise cancelling headphones is a great plus as well!
Z2 should be available later this year is USA I think, if not, maybe Z3?

Exactly this, most people come to the forum are looking for help solving a problem or require specific needs but the truth is that these people are a vast minority of all the users of the phone rather than people making threads praising and complementing the device except for example if you look in the battery thread or the camera thread.
I've got a week 15 model and I love my phone, it's the best phone I've ever had, the previous phones I had that I considered the best were the Xperia X1 and the Motorola V3X.
Anyway, don't be dissuaded from the phone because of complaints you see in forums but that warranty issue, that's a bit dodgy, I wouldn't buy something if it didn't come with a guarantee or warranty.

You should be able to inspect the device before purchasing it and if you're purchasing from an online retailer you should have 7-14 days exchange/refund as per distance selling laws (if applicable in your country) if you're not happy with it after inspection, you wouldn't buy a car without taking a look inside/giving it a test drive would you?

Way they do it in my country is they show you a demo model that is tethered with a security cable. You can play with that one as long as you want.
Then if you decide to buy they offer you a sealed box, some may open it if there is a possibility of a sale otherwise not. Prefer to buy from a shop than online.
I understand that there is date printed on the barcode of the box itself, so wondered if there was a correlation between whats printed on the microsd tray and the box itself.
This way its much easier to distinguish newer batches from old without opening the box.
Can anyone confirm ?

A unified call for LG to acknowledge and fix its G Watch pin problem...

I have set up a Google Plus post as a point for a unified call to get LG to acknoledge and fix their LG G Watch pin corrosion problem.
If you want to help support the cause, head here:
Plus-Google-com/105494436244231709125/posts/huJ5nFcT2by (I Can't Post Links)
Hmm...I've worn the G Watch every day since I got it. I sweat like crazy when at work, and definitely while I'm biking or hiking. It's been through ocean water, filthy pool and jacuzzi water, lotion, sunblock, and some food condiments. Have yet to see any discoloration or corrosion to the device or my arm. Maybe you guys are eating something funky.
I do sweat a lot with this watch though. It's probably the worst watch band I've ever worn. My wrist stinks at the end of the day.
They've already pushed out a firmware fix for this issue. You can close your Google Plus page.

My watch started to show noticeable signs of corrosion on two of the pins. After the update, the pins not only stopped getting worse, but over the past month or so, the corrosion material must have wiped away because now I can't even tell where the corrosion was. So at least for me, the firmware update worked!
OP, did you apply the update? If not, definitely close the google plus page.

[Q] Recent update - Skin Irritation

My G Watch has been causing a fair amount of skin irritation. I found the many articles online that say there is an update coming to fix it and I got an update a few days ago. Problem is, it's got much worse- there are a series of dots along my wrist which are very irritable after said update (previously it was just didcomfort) in an angry red color.
Was that update supposed to fix it and had anyone else had a similar experience?
You want an update to fix your skin irritation? Ok.
Thanks Devs, from my LG G2

Google it. Problem was caused by a constant current running through the pins which was supposed to be stopped in an update.

It's supposed to be fixing since a few weeks...
Well, just to be sure, turn off the watch and wear it a few days.
The G watch issue shoumd already fixed so, you're maybe doing a reaction to the plastic (silicon, etc)

Perhaps. I have stopped wearing it, and there is no more irritation. There are distinct spots on my wrist however.

Well, turn on the watch, take a voltmeter and check by yourself. And then...blame LG (or your allergy )

I don't have a voltmeter. Is there a home solution to check this?

Do like first suggested, turn it off and wear it and see if it comes back or not. If it does then you are allergic
I have no problem here at all. Also, what's your firmware?

Should be latest. Done, hopefully it gets itchy again. I think I can just replace the band.

No need to Google it. Previous update fixed current continuously going to the pins, which was the cause of the corrosion found around the pins. If you have no corrosion, then the issue was fixed, and it would be some sort of allergic reaction. If corrosion is present, then you didn't get the update that fixed it applied.

There is corrosion but I've had the watch for a while and only got the update a few days ago. My reply was to you because it indicated to me that you thought it was a dumb question unrelated to tech.
It seems it is the band. Does anyone know if it's hard to replace a watch band? Never done it before.

Just a little light natured ribbing. As for the band, is a 22mm band, and should be done easily with the proper pin tool, or very small screw driver, to release the spring pin. Can be a bit tricky to do. Any jeweler can help if you need it.

I think I'll end up going to one after college one day. Ordered a strap from Amazon for £3 including expidited delivery so not bad.
just to add...I RMA my first watch due to corrosion. got the replacement and the update to "fix" the corrosion before wearing it. 2 weeks later....same pin corroded. looks like I will have to RMA again

Sounds like perhaps its not fixed and I'm just allergic to it again. That or you just sweat loads

Acidity in your sweat equals corrosion to metal. Everyone's different though. I haven't had the corrosion problem since said update.
Thanks Devs, from my LG G2

I understand that but I've never had issues with any other gold on my body corroding from my sweat...and according to google support its a defect.

It's not just sweat alone that corrodes the pins, it was the constant current in the pins along with the sweat that caused it. Two of the pins on my watch have corroded (from gold to dark silver). But since the update the pins have not corroded further and everything still works fine. No irritation, but I do place my watch on the charger at night so I am not wearing it 24/7.

I put mine on the charger too.
Still no strap.

Charging getting worse and worse

Anyone else noticing their watch is having a harder time acknowledging that you've plugged it into the charger? It looks like the little contacts have worn out on my watch such that the pins on the charger don't come in contact anymore.
This has been driving me nuts lately! I've taken to kind of "slapping" the cord into place rather then just setting it in place as that seems to work best. I've cleaned the contacts with 99.9% iso with not much luck and I tried a pencil eraser without any luck at all. Considering the only time it's been off my wrist over the last 6 moths is when I'm in the shower or charging it, I probably should be happy it charges as well as it does...

Do you find it comfortable to sleep with it? I changed the strap with a metal one and I just wear it when I'm not at home.
You should try the other end of the pencil. The carbon tip can improve the contact between the charging pins.
I guess I'm glad I'm not the only one...sort of. I tried scratching the contacts up a little to get any oxidation off but had very little if any success.

The vibrating alarm has been worth any initial weirdness of sleeping with it on. I start sleep as android, put the watch in theatre mode, and forget it's there. Thanks for the pencil tip idea- I'll try it.
