ROM Manager / Nandroid Manager doesn't detect MicroSD Card? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 5

For some reason Nandroid or CWM ROM Manger doesn't detect my SDcard. If I boot into recovery, it works just fine, but I like having the auto back-up feature.
Running PhilZ Touch 6.48.4 .
Thanks,

It could well be because Kitkat restricted third party app access to the SD card. And then when you boot into a custom recovery, it would give itself the required permissions.
If that is the cause then you can either wait for an update to your custom recovery or edit platform.xml to change the permissions. There has been dozens of threads about this, a forum search will provide you with a wealth of information.
Alternately you could migrate to a different custom recovery that has already sorted out the permissions issues.

[Tip] Md5sum errors restoring in ROM Manager

If you put spaces in the name of your backup file in ROM Manager you will get a Md5sum error when restoring your backup.
To fix, boot back into your current ROM and using Root Explorer or an equivalent file manager, remove the spaces and try again under recovery. Should work now, unless you truly have a corrupted file....
Also I do not recommend Rom Manager on the SGS2. A lot of people complain about bad backups and problems with flashing or restoring!
There have been problems with some roms and Rom Manager because the CWM recovery that Rom Monager "flashes" is not a real recovery. It is only an update.zip file placed on the internal SD card of the phone. The real CWM is the one that is combined with your kernal.
However, for those flashing CM7 nightlies, it is still a useful tool as it makes downloading and flashing new updates almost a one click and fool proof exercise. Importantly, Rom Manager makes sure that the files (including restoring your backups) are not corrupted or incomplete through the MD5sum check. Not sure if real CWM kernals do the same so I like to use Rom Manager to make sure nothing goes wrong.
For those having difficulty booting into proper recovery from Rom Manager, there is a free app called Quick Reboot which works well.

CWM from team epic vs CWM from rom manager

ROM Manager asks to install a different version of CWM than team epic provides here forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=28113755
Anyone know what the difference is? The only reason I prefer to use ROM Manager is that its easy to name backup files so I can keep them organized when I go between different roms.
Speaking of ROM Manager, anyone having success using it on their GS3 for backups and such?

I had team epics Cwm & it was working fine & writing backups to my external storage as well as allowing me to install zips etc from external storage. I flashed the cwm from rom Manager & it says it can't find my external sd card, so I'm going back to team epics version myself. Some have said that Rom managers version worked for them, but a lot of ppl I've talked to said it hasn't. If you've got a working version, I'd stick with it for now. I hope I've helped you out some...
I just gave it another try.
My update: The CWM flashed from ROM manager seems to work fine on its own (identically to the team epic version, including ext sd backups), but the ROM manager app doesn't seem to function well. It wont initiate a backup from the app UI without an error message in CWM, and the app ui can't see backups on the external SD card.
So the CWM version is fine, but the ROM manager app is still non-working.
(this is on sprint gs3)

[Q] Problems Installing Recovery!!

Hey,
So I just bought a new Colors X-Factor X26 wave today. The rooting process was very easy as I successfully rooted it with Kingo ROOT.
Now I want to use the in2ext script to increase the internal memory of the phone, however there is no recovery installed on the phone
I tried using ROM Manager for installing CWM Recovery but it was not supported..
So, Is there any method to install CWM or any other custom recovery on my phone. BTW, there was no pre-installed recovery
Or, I could even use help on any other ways to increase the internal memory.
Cheers..

You can try mtk droid tool to make cwm recovery for you device ....
If you uncomfortable with this then you have to copy paste scripts manually and need to set required permission to copied files as described in updater script of that mod

[Q] Switching recovery? Philz -> TWRP

So I'm currently running a T-Mobile S5 w/ BlissROM Android 5.0 and Philz Touch recovery. I've noticed when I do a nandroid backup, the time/date stamp is wrong. I could probably live with this, but I went to see if a newer version of Philz might fix this bug and discovered it's been abandoned. So I'm wondering if I should switch to TWRP, and what the safe/proper way to do this is?
Obviously I'm already rooted and such.
First of all, I assume I download from here:
http://dl.twrp.me/klte/
Can I flash the zip via Philz? Or do I need to use ODIN? Should I instead use Flashify? https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.cgollner.flashify&hl=en
Or perhaps I should use the Skipsoft Android Toolkit? I'm not clear if that would work in my given situation though:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2721146
(links to show I've tried to do some homework here before asking).
Phone is otherwise working fine so I don't want to f things up for what is just a cosmetic nuisance, but if I can do this easily/safely I wouldn't mind getting onto a supported recovery. Thanks!
search for twrp in store.. install it.. pick the s5 as phone and you can download latest tw and flash fine through the app if rooted.

This?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jmz.soft.twrpmanager
Can it really be that simple?
yep that is what I did to switch from philz to twp

off course as an alternative you can download the recovery and flash in odin
Thanks. I'm checking it out but saw a message that the new TWRP backup/restore (I assume it's referring to nandroid backups) can't do so to the external SD card. I'm able to find on Philz and don't want to lose this (I have lots of free space on my 64GB MicroSD card but not so much on my internal). Is this a false message or is it true?
From the message it's not clear if this limitation is only from within the app (in which case I don't care) as long as I can still do it when booting into recovery.
I came from Philz to TWRP and used the app to replace it. I just reinstalled the TWRP Manager (I just flashed a new ROM yesterday) and checked.
Clicking the "Classic Backup" option reports this message -
Attention
Due to recent changes in TWRP recovery we are unable to specify a target storage device. I.E. External or USB-OTG. You will only be able to backup to internal storage from this app
So what you heard was correct.
I've had TiBu for years and use that to back up/restore so it's no biggie for me.

But does it still do nandroid backups to the external SD from Recovery once TWRP is installed as the recovery? That's what I'm most concerned about. As I said in my earlier post, I'm unclear if the limitation is only within the TWRP Manager app when running "Classic Backup" and doesn't apply to nandroid backups done when you boot into TWRP recover.

I use Titanium Backup as well but TB apps backups aren't the same as a nandroid backup.

You can access safe mode that means an app is causing this.
I would Guess It would be facebook.
Now Boot to TWRP and Delete /data/data/com.facebook.katana and /data/app/com.facebook.katana.
Reboot your device.
If that don't work for you Try Using MTP.
If you don't wanna do that.Take an SDCard Insert in the phone.Boot to recovery.
Move the files manually.
Painful but good.
If not A SdCard Slot is present then Try an OTG.
After recovering your data.Do a Full Restore and do a Nandroid Backup.
You are Using Custom ROM!!!!!!!
You are supposed to be taking More Precautions and being less Dumb than other Users.

You have To install a Custom Recovery In order to go further.
Install a Custom Recovery Like TWRP or Team Win Recovery Project.
A custom Recovery is similar to Normal recovery that comes with Stock Android Recovery known as Stock Recovery. The question Might arise that why Custom Recovery but first We Must Come To know That What a Recovery do and How does it become "Custom".
Android recovery is a Program embedded in a part of android storage that helps us to recover restore backup or Flash System Packages.
A Stock Recovery would only flash OTA updates that are signed by the system only.More the stock recovery Would Not be able to do Some functions A Power user requires.
Now the answer to the previous Question That " Why Custom recovery" It's because a stock Recovery can't move files and Make backups called Nandroid backupup.
Now a Nandroid backup is a Backup a Tester or a Power User would Usd to save His A.S.S in Times he Would do something that causes something like you have encountered.
Now A custom recovery Can only be Installed via Flashing From A PC using Odin.
Find the Custom Recovery For Your Device Named TWRP.
Choose very carefully this could destroy Your device PERMANENTLY
After finding Your Device specific TWRP recovery once again make clear it is Good for your device.
Check The Whole File name.
It should have A Name Like "Revovery.tar.md5" remember it should have an "tar.md5 or similar" ending if it don't have that format find again a different Version or use a different web to download it Now Flash It Via Odin. How?There are loads of Videos on Youtube Find "How To Flash TWRP via Odin On Any Device"
After getting A TWRP recovery on your device It's time for you to "Boot to TWRP" Here boot means Directly going to a specific Programes like Bootloaders Recovery Download Mode ETC.
Find or Borrow a Card from a Friend or Someone.this would not take long.
It would only take half an Hour.
Now Boot to TWRP.
After booting to TWRP.
There would be many Options. This page is Called TWRP HOME page.
Click on Advanced.
It would open other option.
Click on File manger.
Now There would be a File Manager Simmilar to Root Explorer.
This is Time We Recover your Data.
Find Sdcard from the list click on It.
Then you would See your internal Memory.
Now Go to the folder where you kept your Images or anything
After arriving to that folder click on the floating little folder icon On the Bottom Right of the screen with a Tick Mark on It.
After clicking on it
It would Open A Series of options.
Click on copy or move.
After clicking go back to The Root Directory(The First Screen you got after clicking on File manager is called root directory)
There you should Find a List of folders.click on Storage Then extSDCard.
Now again Click on the floating Folder icon with a TiCk Mark.
It would again Open the Same Screen as Before Select paste.
Now you have just moved a Folder of your data from internal memory to extSdCard.
Go back To the root directory and Repeat Step 1 to End to recover 1 folder per Try.
After recovering all data.
Remove your sdcard Transfr data to pc.
Go to TWRP home.
Select Wipe.
Click on advanced Wipe.
Tick Cache.
Tick Art Dalvik.
Confirm your action.
Reboot The phone.
If it does not Solve the stuck at screen Problem then Go to TWRP home Select Wipe and Factory Reset It.
It should Boot now.
There is one question Left.
What is MTP.
It is Called Media Transfer Protocol.
It is used to transfer files from PC to device or vice versa.
Have a Good day and ask me For help If you get Some more questions or are stuck.
