I have a US Cellular Galaxy Mega I am going to follow the instructions on here for rooting the device. The problem I am having is I want to use TWRP for the recovery and I have been told I need to use the one in the thread first then root then replace it with twrp. My issue is I want to make a Stock Unrooted TWRP backup before I root so I can have it as a fallback. Can I just use TWRP for the root process that way I can make a Stock backup with twrp or am I stuck using philz??

Ive rooted my phone before, started having problems and unrooted, lost everything. I finally got my phone the way I want it and want to root it now, but Im afraid ill lose everything if I manage to mess something up again
No....rooting is what gives you that possibility ....some root just to backup...

Titanium backup requires root.
Nandroid backup does not require root, but it does require flashing a CWM Recovery enabled kernel first.
If you want to do a nandroid backup before you root, I would suggest that you use step 3 (a or b) in the guide "How to Flash Custom Binaries Without Ever Incrementing the Flash counter!!" linked in my signature, to flash a CWM enabled kernel such as Entropy512's daily driver. Flashing a kernel using adb or terminal will not affect your settings. Then reboot into recovery and run a nandroid backup. Once you have a nandroid backup, you can always return to where you are now if something goes wrong.
Flashing the Unbrick/Return to Stock + Root package by Entropy512 should give you root without messing with your settings, as long as you do *not* do a wipe data/factory reset first.
I have just bought an SGS2 to replace my HTC Desire.
I rooted it using SuperOneClick. It seemed to work, I can run apps requiring root now.
But the very first thing I want to do is make a nandroid backup of the phone in it's out of box state (or as close to). Is it possible?
On Desire you had to root first, then install a custom recovery such as CWM, and then do a nandroid backup from there. So I guess I will have to install CWM. But googling tells me that on the SGS2 I have to replace the entire kernel to get a new recovery, is that right? And how do I do that?
If the only way to make a nandroid backup is to install a new kernel, I guess the backup will contain the new kernel. Is it possible to go back to the out of box state with the original kernel and original recovery and no root etc.?

Flash em via Odin and you'll have CWM take a backup and you are good to flash any custom ROM
Just take note what your stock firmware and kernel is and if you ever need to send off to Samsung you can just flash back to stock using intratechs stock rom thread

Hey there, I'm trying to root my S3 and a first step I wanted to make a nandroid backup, so i downloaded Odin and I used it to install recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.1.0-i9300 onto my device, i rebooted into the recovery screen and I found myself in the stock recovery menu.
So i tried it once more, to no change in my situation, so I looked through the forums for a while and I found a thread by mskip about installing CWM and thankfully it had this
Stock Recovery being reflashed after a reboot?
There is an auto recovery restore system on stock roms that will reflash the Stock Recovery on a Stock Rom. If the restore files are renamed then CWM Recovery should not be overwritten after a reboot.
You need to be rooted and then delete or rename the following files:

You can then flash recovery without it being overwritten.

My problem being that I can't rename said files bacause my phone isn't rooted and the S3 toolkit requires rooting to do backups and such, and I can't root it because (unless I misunderstood) I need CWM installed.
So my question is : What can I do now? Can I root my phone in any other way ? Is there a way to get past this Stock recovery screen onto CWM?

Ok, so I looked around a bit and I just rooted it without a backup, it seemed safe enough.
Root went well, I backed up right after just in case.
Use cf root and flash via Odin that will give you root and flash cwm. Then you can continue with your nandroid backup. All though you can do the full root procedure using that toolkit, its one of the options. Hope I could help

Hey guys, first time root here. HTC One AT&T 32gb
I was succesfully through the process, used a guide on htconeroot.com to go through all of the steps. Everything went just as expected and I had root access through superSU (was able to install and use root apps, such as Titanium Backup and AdFree). I used Root Manager to flash Clockworkmod because I saw a ROM I'd like to use in the future that only supported that custom recovery. After succesfully flashing that, I then made a backup using Root Manager. Everything was successful and expected, but upon reboot into my stock ROM from the original unrooted phone I had apparently lost SU binaries and root access. Also, ROM Manager (v5.5.3.0) cannot find any backups.
I tried reflashing superSU from the original rooting guide (UPDATE-SuperSU-v1.65.zip), and while it was successfully rooted, I still did not gain root access. I had read through some forums that using the stock ROM that came with the phone might lose root because of the stock recovery, but not sure if that is what happened. I have not installed a custom ROM on this phone yet.
Any help would be appreciated.
UPDATE: Solved, had to select "No" when rebooting from CWM on stock recovery option

I've been reading on the forums some of the guides, FAQ, and read about some ROMs but I'm still a bit unsure of the entire process.
Currently using GT-I9300, 4.1.2 OS, stock.
Backup:
1. Do I need to flash a custom recovery tool (CWM/TWRG) to create an image backup? Should I just root with Odin and then use Titanium?
2. Do these backup my EFS partition or should I back that up separately?
3. Do I need to root my phone with Odin to be able to flash custom recovery tool/backup my EFS?
ROM/Kernel flashing:
1. Since I'm a newbie to this and there seems to be a ton of ROM options, could you recommend on a stable CM based 4.3 ROM I could use?
2. I haven't seen a stock 4.4.4 for GT-I9300, is it stable to use?
I'm sorry If I've asked something thousands have asked before, I couldn't find a clear answer in a decent amount of time.

Backup
(1) Titanium only backs up apps and data it does not do a full (Nandroid backup Google it) Root with cf autoroot http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1980683 and then flash a custom recovery (choice is yours cwm,Twrp,PhilZ flash with Odin)
(2) Yes some custom recoveries back up efs PhilZ does I think twrp does not sure about cwm ( I don't think it does maybe wrong on that) nandroid backups don't backup your efs do this separately
(3) Technically you don't need root to flash a recovery but if you want to backup anything in recovery then you need to root.You will only need to root your phone once if you are intending to flash custom roms (so that you can backup) because root is included in custom roms.
IMPORTANT! You must backup your efs once you have flashed a custom recovery especially coming from 4.1.2. and keep multiple copies on phone and pc!
Rom/Kernel flashing
(1) We cannot recommend roms it is against XDA rules
(2) Their is no stock 4.4.4 roms last release was 4.3 anything else is a custom/port of 4.4

I ended up using samsung galaxy S3 toolkit (which is amazing btw) to root & load insecure boot image, flash custom recovery img and backup everything on my phone.
I'm now ready to flash my first custom ROM
