I love the CM 10.1 build of 4.2.2. It is my dream phone right now. The problem is that no WIFI tethering works on it as of yet. If anyone has anything working I'd love to be proven wrong. This is a show-stopper for me. I can't use bluetooth because my laptop doesn't have bluetooth.
I tried every tethering app out there. Barnacle was the best in that it reported the errors it was seeing instead of just refusing to work.
Anyway, I am thinking of working around the problem by keeping a ROM stored as a TWRP backup that I can restore when I need tethering. I don't need tethering on a moment's notice.
I would like the tethering ROM as slim as possible. I haven't tried any yet. Would a restore be any faster with a slim ROM?
Can someone suggest what ROM I should use that has a small footprint and can restore quickly? I'm thinking that I won't have any apps and no account logged in. If I'm tethering I will be using the other device for email etc. And I'm sure the phone will work no matter what I'm running.
Can anyone suggest a better workaround than this?
I pretty much tether all day with my jellybam install. It has been a rock solid performer on my note and has kept me from having the itch to try any of the 4.2.1 ROMs.
There is supposed to be a new version released tomorrow, but quite frankly , I don't know whether I'll bother as the current version is exceptionally stable ( with flaps kernel )...
I'm sure with cm 10.1 going nightly, they'll have tethering fixed shortly. Its a pretty important feature for many of us.

I tried jellyblam for quincyatt and I got a boot loop. I went back to recovery and wiped everything again, reinstalled, and I still got a boot loop. Oh well. Thanks for the suggestion.

Sounds like a bad download...Did you download straight to your phone? While I've never had this issue, I have heard that some prefer to download to their computers and transfer the zip to their phones..
You might be right. I did download it to my PC and copy over the zip. However, I had trouble copying and I had to copy a second time. So, I'll try again.
I did a fresh download, copied, wiped, flashed, and it didn't work. Apparently bam won't run on my phone.
...and your using the latest version of twrp?
Yes. I checked. I might be doing something wrong but I doubt it. I'm guessing there is a bug somewhere that rarely shows up. Until the source code is available these custom roms are somewhat a shot in the dark.
I'm just going to go back to my ICS backup when i need tethering. I guess I started this thread with the hope that someone would have a workaround. I really like 4.2.2 and I've decided to live with this. Maybe it will be fixed soon?
Thanks for your help.
The only tethering app that seems to work is "Open Garden." It's in the Play Store but you'll have to side-load it if on AT&T.

thx -- I couldn't find apk anywhere, I'll look again. Is that bluetooth only? I need wifi.
apk is not on their home page. Any idea where to find it?
How do you keep AT&T from seeing that you're tethering?

I don't know who you are replying to, but I tethered all the time with ATT when using ICS. I didn't know they were trying to block it.
For a while they were changing people's plans to a tethering plan if AT&T caught them tethering. I got a warning email myself.

I know that Verizon has folded tethering into the normal data plans. They make it sound like a benefit but they're raising the overall price so they are really forcing you to buy tethering. I thought ATT and the others were going the same way.
I assume they realized they couldn't enforce it any other way.

Assuming you're looking for Open Garden, go to http://www.open garden.com and tap the big orange Get APK button to download.

I've been to their home page a million times because everyone said you could get the apk there. I was going crazy because all I ever saw was a big orange button to download a version for windows. I had just now typed a reply to you that said you were crazy and then it hit me. You meant to go there on the phone! I'd only been there from my laptop.
Thanks, I'll give it a try now.
-- later --
As I feared, open garden is bluetooth only.
I was researching the hotspot issue that only a few users have been having and found that it is inherent to android 4.1.2 and newer. What I found out:
"Throughout the previous iterations of Android (<4.1.2), Android has not identified for the carriers which data is for tethering, and which is not.
Android 4.1.2 introduced that ability (and requirement) for Android devices to properly flag when data is for tethering purposes. This is the first time this has been used in a vanilla release of Android...
For everyone frustrated by this update to Android: Android respecting a carrier's request to know if data is for a tethered device IS NOT A BUG. IT IS A FEATURE. It's not a feature for users like you and me, it's a feature for manufacturers like Samsung and HTC, so they can in turn build devices that carriers can have more control over.
So, to be clear, THIS IS NOT A BUG. Google INTENDED to respect carrier tethering rules. The only way to circumvent this is to either get a plan from your carrier that allows tethering, revert to a build of Android of 4.1.1 or earlier (I used wugfresh NRT tools, google it, they're amazing and simple: FOR NEXUS DEVICES ONLY, SORRY), or for a developer to find and KILL THE ****ING ABILITY FOR ANDROID TO TAG DATA AS TETHERING DATA and release that to the public; either by providing an modded Android image, or as an app (much less likely to work unless you're rooted)."
Copied from a past on another forum, and apparently I can't post a link to it.
Even though I clicked on Thanks, I'd like to thank you again for that clear explanation. I'm sure it won't take long for that to be hacked.
i think the next nightly may fix it
Next to fix on next Nightly

I sent JamieD a message about it a few days ago. I'm not sure if all developers were aware with source of the problem. Its especially hard when only some users report having an issue. Hopefully they get it working soon.
Here is a message from Bajee Baskararasa the creator of Rootbox ROM on Google+:
"Bajee Baskararasa - 23 minutes ago
Hey guys I know I've gone missing from G+ and XDA but I've been extremely busy with work these past few days. Unfortunately I won't be able to invest any time for RootBox for at least a week or two. I planned to get 4.3 builds rolling by this week or so but my situation clearly didn't allow that to happen. I'll try my best to set aside time for RootBox but since I got this new job it'll take some time to adjust myself and get a proper schedule. Another factor that will eventually impact my time is University starting in about 3 weeks.*So enjoy stable V4.2 build for now (which I'm running as well) or you can *always try out other roms who released Android 4.3, until then enjoy the summer and the good weather! (wherever you are)
Post this message in your device's thread. Thanks +Myles Nystrom*in advance since you will eventually post this message in almost all the threads "
I think this says it all....enjoy the summer and enjoy V4.2

On the 4.2 build, I could intermittently get the data to work by messing with settings in the network settings. I just turned LTE off/on a few times, then turned data off/on a few times, and also would cycle airplane mode. After doing these things randomly, I eventually got data to turn on, but it doesn't stick. If you turn data off or reboot, it back to not functioning and I have to try getting it to work again. It's very strange.
JamesPumaEnjoi, do you maintain this device at all? if not, do you know who to direct this problem to? The data worked fine on the 7/3 nightly, but hasn't worked correctly since that. I've seen a few posts on G+ Rootbox community about it, but they get very few responses.
I wish I knew a dev that could have a looksee at it. Bajee is maintaining this for like 20 devices, with a few maintainers for their specific device. I mean, I emailed Bajee directly about it lol, but it probably landed in his "waa waa waa! This is broke!" mailbox.

Yeah, I'm not sure why no one has fixed it yet. It would be one thing if the problem was trivial, but data is a pretty important thing on a smartphone. I'm pretty sure it's one of the only roms that has this problem. It also happens to be the only rom I want on my phone! Lol! I've even gone as far as making a build box and attempting builds myself, but still haven't had luck getting things to work.
Someone else I asked to look at it said it must be the drivers. It's stuff pulled from three different ROMs that do work on our device. I might start building and putting stuff together like Frankenstein
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
yeah, I just don't know enough at this point to pinpoint the cause of the problem. I wish I knew more.
He's just been super busy lately 4.3 will be out soon enough
Well something was up with data on the Rootbox builds fir 4.2.2. Was he aware of it?

Well, only 1 official rootbox build for verizon in the last month and a half (including 2 "stable" builds) has had working data. I don't know how it can be considered stable with data problems, but maybe that's just me. I'm not knocking Bajee or anything, since he has a lot on his plate... it's just a little frustrating is all since that's the only issue I've seen on the builds and it hasn't been addressed.
If any there's any dev that has any ideas on how to get data working properly, I know there's a few of us who would greatly appreciate it. I've searched all over for details on how to fix no data, but had no luck in finding a solution (tried porting the rom, swapping lib files from working roms, building my own build)... I've also got a logcat of the data not working, then turning on for about 3-4 secs and turning back off, if there's someone knows how to interpret them.
Something to do with the RIL?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4
I tried looking into any RIL files from the 7/3 (working) and 7/7 (next nightly stopped working) releases to see if that might be it, but I don't know enough to determine if it was a problem. I also checked the changelogs between those releases on rootbox(dot)basketbuild(dot)com to see if there were any specific changes that might have affected the verizon s4. There were 2 commits that I'm not exactly sure how they affected things:
7/4: "jf: revert ril changes"
7/6: "jf: bring back samsung ril. problems with slow data on certain modem"
I'm definitely an amateur when it comes to dev stuff though, so I would need someone else to explain if these might have been what broke data again. Either way, I'm slowly learning more about building, github, and such.
Very first post here at XDA....been lurking for a LONG time and am by no means a noob on Android (or tech in general).
I've been following this thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2411277&highlight=apn - as well as related threads and have discovered an issue that I'd like to discuss...but since that's a development thread and I haven't posted anything before I gotta start here (unless someone can remove the 10 post limit for me).
Running the latest build of Decks unofficial CM nightly and having issues where my wifi won't disconnect even when going out of ran of the currently connected access point. After a weeks worth of wiping roms and reloading various versions and testing, I believe I have it narrowed down to being caused by my Bluetooth. It seems that if Bluetooth is on, the wifi won't disconnect. One outside the wifi area, if I turn off Bluetooth the wifi will disconnect within a second or so. As long as I leave Bluetooth off I don't have the issue. I'm using Tasker at the moment to only turn on Bluetooth in the situations that I choose, but would still like to contribute if possible to helping solve this issue.
Has anyone ran into this before? I've searched google as well as XDA and not finding this specific situation (yet). I'm willing to contribute a logcat if needed, or can try anything else that is suggested. I've flashed back to stock rooted and various versions of other EVO roms and only seem to be having it on the CM10.2 roms (maybe CM10.1, but would have to go back and test before I'd stand by that).
Let the thrashing begin .....just take it easy!!!
Hello, I recently found a TP2 taking care of my dust and I was wondering if there are any Android ROMs for the phone. I know there are some, but I wanna know what's the ROM with the newest version of Android.
Thanks.

battery indicator is kinda broken and also my phone used to overheat.... alot. there's also the froyo build (2.2 version), which might be more stable.
you have to find out for yourself which one works the best.
there's also an android 4 rom, but lots of features are not working. check it out yourself.

Why do you say the wifi doesn't work? I've been using Android on my Rhodium since June 2012 and I don't have problems with wifi--bluetooth, yes, but not wifi.
What makes you say it doesn't work? Is it not showing any wireless networks?
what version of the rhodium do you have? RHOD100? RHOD400? I have a RHOD400, and the devs are also using RHOD400's. They don't guarantee complete functionality on non-RHOD400's (that's actually mentioned somewhat by wizardknight at the end of post #1 of the GBX0* thread that wizardknight linked above
Hello, I too am having lots of troubles with finding a ROM that will work on my RHOD300. I started the whole install with a GBX_3.4.35_Full, then the GBX_3.4.26.13_FULL then the OMGB 1.2.3 May 4 and finally the OMGB Jan 16, and all of them have given me a non-working wi-fi. When I enable the bluetooth it actually turns on ok.
I've been using my HTC TP2 for 4 years as a WinMO phone and finally decided that I'd give this Android thing a try. The wi-fi has been working for me all along.
When I first installed the GBX it was giving me Wi-Fi error (viewing in Wireless & network settings). After I switched to the OMGB ROM I'm now getting a Wi-Fi turning on... and the option is grayed out.
I've been searching around and reading through these forums and I'm trying to find solutions, but nothing seems to work. The wifi-nvram-generic.txt file option I wish I could try but unfortunately I don't know the phones mac address without booting back into a WinMo phone.
I would be grateful if somebody could help me sort this out as I really do need to have wifi on my phone, otherwise my smart phone isn't so smart after all...
I've taken my RHOD100 out of the dust, and fired it up to NAND flash it with te 2.3.7 xda ROM. I used the GBX0*+3.4.26.13 Full for my device. Although it's not very snappy, it's acceptable after recalibrating the touch screen. Don't expect miracles. Wifi is working fine. Haven't tested BT yet.
The 3.4.35 version did boot a bit, but didn't get past the bootscreen, which seemed to be in an unending loop.
I doubt the GPS is working.. GPS test didn't get a fix in 15 minutes and did not see any satelites. Also no support for front camera... but hey.. who cares
I am having issues connecting to Android Auto Head Unit in my car. I simply get "Phone Charging" notification on and off. I tried most suggested things like, enable debug mode, reinstall Android auto in phone. Nothing seems to work.It would be great if anyone can share some hints on making it work in my car. I have seen others facing issues like only half the screen being displayed in the Car Head Unit. But in my case it is never getting connected .
I am pretty happy with the performance of Stock Rom except for this minor annoyance. I would like to know if Android auto works with any other techniques. If not then it would be good to know its working with Custom Roms.
