[Q] Camera and custom roms - Galaxy S III Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

sorry if this ha been asked before, I tried searching but could not find a definite answer I've been away Xda-developers for a while, but I am now looking to upgrade my S3 ROM, maybe using a custom build 4.4, but I remember the camera didn't had all the functions of the stock ROM, is this still the case? I use the camera extensively so its an important part for me, should I just stick with a modified stock ROM?

Stock based roms is what you want if camera is important to you.

working?

Thank you, I imagined that was the case, but wanted to make sure

Question about Stock ROM and Android?

So I have just Flashed HARDSPL, RADIO and a custom ROM.
I'm about to install Android now.
My question is, is it necessary to have a custom ROM to have Android?
Or can I have stock ROM and Android?

Yes.... and no.
Actually, "it depends" is the best answer. I use stock ROM (had to flash my Radio to higher than 2.08 obviously). I have no problems with android. A quick search around the android forums will show you that many people have problems with android unless they flash a custom ROM.
So, it depends... If you are lucky it will work fine on stock ROM. If not, you'll need to flash one of the recommended custom ones.

Thank you for the quick reply.
I guess I'll stick with the custom ROM for now then, although I do miss my stock one already lol.
Just for future references, Do I have to uninstall my custom ROM and flash Stock ROM the same way I have done Custom ROM?
I believe the process is slightly different and may involve a flash through the SD card. Although I've never really looked into it myself.
Check out THIS thread. It has some more info on how to flash back to stock. Or THIS one if you are tmous.
Thank you ever so much, I figure I will try it with stock ROM first, see if that works.
I'm guessing it doesn't matter which stock ROM I download from the none TMOUS thread link?
Actually, I remember reading somewhere that it very much matters what stock ROM you use. (I think) someone said they bricked their phone using the wrong one. However, I do read a lot of posts and I may be remembering incorrectly....
Either way, you should ask around or scan through that thread to be sure.
Right ok, Trying to find a tutorial now on how to determine which one I will need.
Thank you for your help.
I remember my stock ROM being 1.66 something.
So should I download that one?

[Q] Would you recommend Infusion ROM?

Hi guys, Just got my sgs2 and was looking for a good, stable, rom being close to asop and having little or no samsung bloats helps. Infusion showed up in my search and it seems to have just what I need. I just want to know what people's general experience has been like (trying to look before I leap ). I used darky on the sgs1 which worked quite well for me. I would really appreciate it if you guys can share your experience with infusion rom. and if there are any other rom you can recommend.
Also I currently have my sgs2 rooted with a custom kernel on stuck rom, which for the most part works very and is damn fast and snappy. Do you think having a custom rom would make much difference? Thanks in advance
Yes, it is without a doubt my favourite rom. Very stable, improved my battery life and has everything a custom rom should (deodex, CWM, root etc).
At the end of the day though, try it and see. If you don't like it you can always download your stock rom and flash it back, or even try another custom rom like VillainROM or LightningROM

[Q] Why flash CM10, Liquid, or Carbon?

Hey, gang! I'm running 4.1.2, happily rooted on my Maxx and everything working fine. I've flashed ROMs a couple times in the past when they have provided features or functionality that are noticeably better than the stock OS, so although I'm certainly not an expert I'm also not afraid to try a few things.
I've recently developed an itch to flash CM10 (using Safestrap, and having a kind of dual-boot scenario where I can boot into either CM10 or stock as needed), but from the videos and screenshots I've been able to find it looks almost identical to the stock ROM. I've done a bit of searching, but have yet to find any major differences from stock other than having the bloatware removed. I know a lot of people love CM10, but why? Can someone enlighten me what sets CM10 apart from the stock? If there are some compelling reasons, I'm in...I just haven't found them yet.
Thanks!
PS - I'm also considering Carbon or Liquid...any thoughts on those, too?

Theme engine, customization options, etc. (In the settings menu). Also, it allows you to have a later version of android than the stock Rom. Hope this helps.

Ah, good to know. I'll do some reading on the theme engine to see what's involved. Thanks!

CM10.2 builds are starting to show up now (Android 4.3). We'll never see an official 4.3 upgrade from Motorola, so that'll be the biggest reason to flash a custom ROM, in my opinion.
I don't do much customizing/theming of my phone, but I still prefer CM over the stock ROM. I could probably achieve similar results by just removing/freezing all the bloatware in the stock ROM. Still, CM and other ROMs have features that the stock ROM doesn't.
If you're going to mess around with your phone, rooting definitely gives you the most benefit. Custom ROMs give an incremental benefit. Assuming you're careful and don't brick your phone, there's no downside to trying some of the custom ROMs out. You can even leave your stock ROM intact and switch between it and your custom ROM until you find one you like. I keep coming back to CM10, but I've also tried PacMan and LiquidSmooth. I've heard good things about Carbon and MUIU.

That's exactly the kind of thing I wanted to find out. Thanks for your help!
Also the numerous battery and performance tweaks and added security features.
To sum it up, just try it for yourself and you'll know.

Flashing back to stock

I couldn't seem to find the answer to this searching the forums. do I need to use odin to flash back to stock? or can I just flash the stock rom via custom recovery? I apologize if this has been answered but like I said I could not find the answer.
thanks
Joe
Top thread in the Development section.

I read through that thread... the question I have is if its possible to flash with using custom recovery or must i use odin to flash the stock rom... That thread just tells you how to use Odin ...
You could flash a stock ROM, but it will still be rooted. The only way to fully go back to stock is to use Odin and then Triangle Away.
thanks!! that was all i wanted to know. i still want to be rooted but thinking of going back to stock rom... i have tried a few roms and don't seem to get great battery life as i did with stock. I love CM 10 but I use the s-note feature constantly throughout the day and miss having it.

There's lots of cool ROM's similar to stock such as Clean, Tweaked, JellyButter, and Beans. If you want to retain stock features use touchwiz ROM's not AOSP ones such as CM.
If you click the link in my sig, there's a list of all ROM's for our phone, separated into Touchwiz and AOSP categories. If you just want a rooted stock ROM, use the one called "Stock/Root/DeOdex SCH-I605VRAMC3".

Use GMD s-pen control ( paid app but worth it) and papyrus. That's what I use and it works perfectly. You lose the ability to do math problems with s-note, but you gain customization and gestures. Works quite well together IMO.

Just use recovery to flash a stock rom...beans has a stock vramc3 .zip rom posted in the dev section. Going back to stock via Odin is only needed if you are returning the device or soft bricked.
cool... Thanks everyone for the help. I have been messing with android phones forever but have had a hard time finding the best rom for the note. i will play around a little more tonight and see what one I like best before i go back to stock rom. I liked the jelly bean rom but there were a couple of bugs that i couldn't get past. i never got liquid to flash correctly.

[Q] Update to CyanogenMod from stock 4.0 or from stock 4.1?

Hi everybody.
As stock ICS has better performance than stock JB, to update to CyanogenMod from stock 4.0 is better than do it from stock 4.1?
Excuse me if this question is answered in the forum, I don't find it.
Regards.
Those are two different subjects.. There's no relation between a stock rom's performance, and the speed of 'better way' ro flash a custom rom. However, there are things to think about when coming from stock 4.0.4., but I assume you've read the guides and seen them (brickbug etc.). Good luck.
Thanks for your answer.
For your reply, I understand to install stock 4.1 and then install CyanogenMod is less problematic than install it from stock 4.0, ¿right?
I don't have the phone yet.
I will read more & more before install CyanogenMod in this device (I readed about installing problems with this cellphone at CyanogenMod's Wiki).
Thank you again.

You just have to search for information about the brickbug that can appear in 4.0.4. Read about it and avoid it, than it is 'safe' to flash any custom rom (it always contains a risk of course).
May I ask you why you would want to flash CM immediatly? Stock JB works very good on the SII.

While maybe it's very good for you, it isn't good for me. Stock ICS was acceptable for me, but Jelly Bean sucks.
Thanks for your interest.
