Changing phones and what to transfer the apps that I like on the S4 to the S5.
Are there any compatibility issues that I should be aware of while doing this.
Since I am currently on KK 4.4.4 with the S4, my plan is to copy my none system apps to the S5?
Anyone having any problems in doing this?
These are both Samsung phones and the only real difference is going from Sprint to TMO. My current phone is rooted and has a custom ROM. I do plan to root the S5 immediately and install CWM Recovery.

Using Titanium Backup has no issues. Came from S4 like you.
I used helium backup on mine.
Worked great.

Just to confirm, I can just install my apps from my last TB backup after I root the S5?

Usually. It's not guaranteed or foolproof, but it will work with most apps. The best path is of course reinstalling apps. But many people find it easier to transplant them as you are planning to and it usually works.

Only app that gave me an issue was Viper4Android because it restored the data and thought that the drivers were installed when they weren't, so repeatedly forced closed. But yeah just let TiB do its thing. You may encounter some apps force closing but a clear data usually fixes it. User apps aren't that big a problem when switching devices.
Thanks to all for the help, made the move with TB and all went well.
I use Shareit
This thread got me thinking, why doesn't android have a more native non root method for making and restoring backups with app data?

ok, so i just rooted and unlocked my phone, and i am gonna start removing some bloatware from the phone, but am concerned because i don't want to delete an app that i think is bloatware, but it is tied into another appp and then both apps won't work.
for example, if i delete viewdini, i don't know if that will affect how i watch videos on the phone.
so what i am asking is basically if there is a list of all the stock samsung/amazon/google/verizon bloatware apps that i can safely delete?
thanks!
just downloaded the file from the cleanrom build of what scott removed... is it safe to say if i remove these i will be ok?
The pro version of titanium backup is ideal for this. You can freeze apps before you remove them to find out if they're important or not. I don't know of an official cheat sheet of what's safe to remove but if you look at ROMs and what the devs have removed, that's a good start to let you know what you can do without.

If you delete an application you will NOT get Verizon phone updates. It's better to freeze the applications with Titanium Backup.

this thread contains a list of apps safe that are supposed to be safe to remove. remove them at your own risk.
Excellent, thank you all for the help! I deleted the obvious bloatware last night, I will delve into the others at a later time.

I've just rooted my device for the first time, I'm using Titanium Pro to freeze stuff on this list (I figured freezing would be safest being a noob)...but more than half of them dont even appear in Titanium, and none of the files show .apk on them. Is there another method being used to see these files?
What is the advantage to freezing them vs. disabling them in the regular system manager?

Some applications can't be disabled in the system. So you have to freeze them instead. Freezing allows you to unfreeze them if Verizon releases a software update. If you delete them however you will never get a software update.

The only reason for a sotware uodate is if you plan on staying stock. Mind you verizon will more than likely patch root access and the loki method of bypassing the bootloader in future updates. In my experience rom devs usually stay on top of adding all must have features that would be included in ota updates without loosing root and recovery.

True but someone will always find a new method. Voodo OTA rootkeeper might even work to restore it.

I have a new 32gb s4 on order right now. I have a few questions.
1. How can I tell if I my new phone has the VRUAME7 update? If it's not updated I was thinking about rooting, installing voodoo ota and then updating since on prior posts that seems to work.
2. If I'm not rooted what's the best way to tether the s4?
3. I am mostly rooting for a few apps I like to use and to to do anything with ROMs. One thing I was hopping to was transfer my app data and phone/text logs via titanium backup. If I'm not rooted is there a good way to do this?
Thanks.

1) Go to About Phone and look I am hesitant to use voodoo. I have seem 1 post where it didn't work and 1 where it did. That's not good enough for me.
update: One thing I have read about using voodoo and then upgrading is that while you might be able to restore root you will lose recovery which means no chance of using any custom ROM's until a Recovery/Root method is developed.
2) Question >> are you on an Unlimited plan? If not the WiFi tethering is included.
3) Not sure. I know that there are other backup programs but I am not sure if they cover everything your looking for. Some do just the phone/text items.
Good luck.
Thanks for the help. Is there a version number I should look for in the about phone? I have unlimited data so I cannot tether w/o root or a 3rd party program.

Under Build Number look for JDQ39.I545VRUAME7
I have heard that FoxFi works but I don't know if it works on this release. Should.
Your welcome

Hi all,
I'm wondering what the preferred method or app is for backing up your apps when preparing to switch ROMs. I'd love to try out some more ROMs, but it's a pain to have to reinstall everything every time.
I assume the gold standard is still Titanium Backup (Pro?), but I remember hearing something about some phones having issues when doing this... is the S4 OK with this method? Is there any other safe, easy ways you know of?
I also have heard that backing up and restoring stuff with apps like Titanium can incite glitches and bugs. Is there truth to that? Is it when attempting to back up any particular item(s)?
Thanks for your input.

I used Tibu for the first time last night to restore apps when I put a new ROM on my Xoom. It worked like a charm! Took a while for them to all install. The only thing that didn't work was the supposed ability to create a zip that you could install Tibu and the apps from in recovery mode.

I never trust those build a zip for you apps. I know it's possible to build a zip with your apps and data in it, I just don't like letting an app do it for me.

I think you can go into apps and delete them individually(not 100% sure) or you can download the de-bloated version of the rom. I think there is one floating around here somewhere
Edit: Here's a really good 4.1.2 rom if that's what your wanting to stay at - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1907203
There are plenty of good 4.1.2 debloated roms here but that one I just seen so I linked to it

I would (and did) download titanium backup pro. You don't have to use titanium, but it's highly recommended by many. Open titanium, or your preferred app manager and do a COMPLETE backup of all user and system apps. Then you can "FREEZE" any unwanted apps you think you don't need. Once you have the app(s) frozen, use the phone for a couple of days. If it's still performing fine then you can proceed to delete the already frozen apps. I highly recommend freezing before deleting. If you freeze something wrong, a simple unfreeze will fix it. If you delete, then you could be up the creek! I also recommend freezing one at a time. If you go freeze crazy you might not know what app(s) ruined your phone. One final note is to becareful restoring apps and data you have backed up. For example, if you backed up an app from an ics rom, restoring it to a kit kat rom might give unwanted glitches. Just be careful so you don't put your phone in paperweight mode!
DeBloating
I found two debloating apps that I have used on my Gnote; mrRobison-Ashaman,v2.30.zip & AtT_T_GALAXY_Note_3_DeBloater_v1.1.zip and they work great. Just do a search, download and run in CWM or TWRP.
Enjoy
Other than the TeamWin or TWRP how can I backup my system settings, software, apps and such. I don't want to root as it will void the warranty with Verizon and Samsung.
Helium (previously known as Carbon) in the App store. It needs to be authorized via USB.
Good luck getting Helium to work. I spent days struggling with it, and could get a partial backup about 1 time in 10. And the developer provides zero support.
Super Backup Pro can backup your apps and other things, you can also use Samsung Backup to do that.

But not app data (without Root).
FYI, Helium works fine for me on all the devices I've recently used: Sprint Galaxy Note 3 (flashed to AOKP 7.1.2 Nougat), Unlocked 910C Galaxy Note 4 (both stock ROM & LOS 7
1.2), Unlocked GS7E, Unlocked GS8+ (Nougat, Oreo beta), and Unlocked GS9+ (Oreo).

All app data is stored in "Android" folder on the root of your internet or external storage.
how did you guys manage to get helium to work? It just refuses to work for me I activate it from the pc and the min i close the app and start it again it asks for activation again. I contacted the developer but got no response from him.
