My brother broke his i9100g and it's messed up. Help? - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

He tried to flash cyanogenmod 10.1.3 on his i9100g and now it has problems
1) when pressed power button, it will go to twrp
2) when pressed the recovery comb, it won't boot
3) when pressed the download comb, it won't boot
4) when charging or plugged to a computer, it will boot to twrp automatically
5) when in twrp, touch doesn't work. the screen won't detect touches
Now I have his phone with me. I'm using mac and I have heimdall, recovery-clockwork, cm-10.1.3 and gapps downloaded.
Anyone with advice / guides to help me fix his phone?
If you need additional information, I will try to provide it.

Hello
I think that it's an easy fix.First, download another rom and make sure that it's for the i9100g not the i9100, why don't you download stock rom i9100g and then use a usb cable to copy it to the s2 i9100g, but in order for it to appear on open mounts and storage (i'm not sure if it is the same in twrp),so copy the rom which is FOR the i9100g and then flash it.Everything should be ok

The problem is that it won't go pass twrp. It couldnt even go to download mode. AFAIK there isnt any way to copy the files to the phone via USB cable without the phone booted or in download mode. But if what I said is wrong, please do enlighten me.

There should be a mounts and storage option in twrp, click mount sd, connect usb and then copy the file needed for flashing.
or you could try to flash a rom via odin, download samsung stock 4.1.2 and put your phone into download mode (press power button+home+volume down) and then connect a usb to flash the rom.If you have any questions related to this please ask.If the rom is installed successfully but you get a bootloop boot into stock recovery and wipe cache partion and do a factory data reset.
but I take no responsibility if your phone gets bricked or damaged
Thanks

It sounds like it could be soft bricked - might happen if the wrong phone model software has been flashed. The only way around this I know of is to get hold of a USB Jig. Its worth a try before the repair shop!

Phone Not Starting After Flashing new CWM

Hello all,
I've encountered a problem with my Straight Talk Galaxy S II S959G after flashing the CWM from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2559694
I was running 6.0.1.2 or something along those lines. And I was running the 4.2.2 SuperNexus ROM. I can only get to the Samsung Galaxy S II screen and then it goes blank, but does not shut off, as my computer recognizes as being on. However, I cannot DO anything with it even though it can be connected to my computer. Odin v1.85 does not seem to recognize it either.
If someone could help, it would be much appreciated.
It sounds like you just have a soft brick if you're still getting the Samsung logo.
ODIN is intended to be used in download mode. Are you able to get into download mode (hold vol +/vol -, then plug in the USB cable)? If so, you should be able to reflash the kernel, assuming that's what broke. I like to keep an ODIN flashable full stock ROM (minus bootloaders) handy in the event that I mess things up badly.
I don't have experience with the specific ROM you are trying to flash (I was actually planning on playing around with that one soon).

I'm not very experienced with all of this, but, I have tried Odin mode. My computer does not recognize my phone when it is plugged in.
I do have the stock rom that my phone came with too, but I do not have a Samsung official USB cable to use with it, which, supposedly, is required for this to work. And I do not know if my Odin version on my computer is outdated either.

Many usb cables will work just fine. The original cables are known to be of good quality. Odin3 v1.85 is recommended for this phone, although any version of Odin should work.
Did you open Odin on the desktop before putting the phone into download mode? Sometimes the problem is as simple as wrong sequence.
If you have a USB jig, use that to put the phone into download mode. Then connect it to the computer while Odin is open on the desktop.
Make sure you have the correct driver installed. You should have "SAMSUNG USB driver for mobile phones" in your add/remove programs dialog in windows. If not, install it. If so, uninstall it, reboot, reinstall it.
Try different cables, different usb ports, even different pc's.
I'll try not to butt in too much, since creepyncrawly obviously has a lot of experience.
(at this point, I'm assuming you're on Windows)
Like he said, it's sounds like it's most likely a driver issue. When you first plugged in the phone, did you get a Windows balloon notification saying "Installing drivers"? If you open up device manager, do you have any devices with an exclamation point next to them, indicate a device that failed to start? If so, make sure the Samsung drivers are installed.
A USB jig is definitely nice to have handy. I use this one (as long as you can wait a few weeks on shipping). If you can get into download mode, your bootloaders are probably safe (meaning you should be able to recover easily).
I actually installed that CM11 ROM yesterday on my SGH-I777 (I can't say anything specific about your model and how it may differ, but it seems to basically be the same phone as the I777). I was running stock non-rooted JB 4.1 with stock recovery, so I had to take a little more of a convoluted route to get there.
In the end, here's the thread for you. Once you can get ODIN download mode working again, you should be well on your way to fixing it (flash CWM 6.0.4.5 from ODIN, boot into recovery, then try the ROM install again).
Well, I've tried flashing CWM again using Odin. While I actually can USE Odin this time, it just isn't working... My phone still only turns on and goes blank after the Galaxy S II screen.
I had something similar happen the other night when I flashed a kernel that was apparently incompatible with my Captivate (although it should have been fine). The phone would get stuck on the Galaxy S boot screen. I had to reflash a known good kernel to get it working again.
If you can get into the recovery, you can try a wipe/factory reset + wipe cache.
Is ODIN detecting the phone but just failing to flash the files? What error is it getting?
If ODIN is flashing the files properly, but still preventing full boot up, it's probably easiest at this point to flash back to a stock ROM. The previous thread link has the instructions and flash files (I personally have an S2, not an S959G, so it's a slightly different process).
Hi - I don't know if it is a completely outdated method, but this worked on my father's SII skyrocket yesterday when I was encountering a similar softbrick issue:
Get zadig (http://zadig.akeo.ie/), start zadig, get the phone in download mode, hit Options -> List All Devices, select the Samsung or similar device from the dropdown and replace the default USB driver.
Then use heimdall (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755265) to flash in a replacement recovery.
Double check that your phone is detected in download mode: heimdall detect
Then flash the recovery: heimdall flash --RECOVERY recovery.img (try CWM for your phone version)
(some places will have you add --no-reboot. that didn't work for me. let it auto reboot)
After it powers down, quickly disconnect the USB cable and put your fingers on the +/- buttons to get into recovery mode. From there push over whichever ROM via adb, etc. etc.

It says Odin is successful, but still nothing happens. And I cannot get into recovery no matter how many times I try.
It seems flashing the stock ROM with Odin has worked now, but, now my phone has the tracfone start up animation just looping over and over.

Boot into recovery and wipe caches; sometimes you have to do an extra wipe to get out of this type of bootloop.

If you have the stock boot animation you should have recovery. Take the battery out, then put it back in and hold power+volume +/- until you get recovery. I have sometimes had to do this extra step after restoring stock.
Make sure your phone isn't plugged in while you're trying this, btw.

[Q] i9300 keep rebooting and never turn on

Hi everyone.
I have a i9300 and it is stuck in rebooting.
Power key is ok.
I can get it to download mode or recovery mode.
I can wipe cache and partition but nothing change, it keeps rebooting.
I cant use odin because odin didn't see the phone,
I think USB debugging wasn't on. But I cant find a way to open it without turning on.
I am looking for possibilities and solution for 2 days and I cant find any. Please help me.
bootloop
It seems you are stuck in a boot loop. Try clearing the cache & perform a full factory wipe. Then reboot your device.
Hope that helps.

If you've cleared the partition structure then you've turned a possible soft brick into a hard brick, you'll need a new motherboard now.
Try flashing the rescue firmware, from the thread in general, but I wouldn't hold out any hope.

same problem but worse please help
HI guys i have exactly the same problem but my bootloop was caused by installing recovery through the cwm app and then rebooting to recovery through the app. i rebooted to recovery with an app before and it caused this aswell ...however back then my volume down button was working. i fixed it last time by going into download mode and flashing philz recovery however i cant enter download mode or recovery or boot into system.
PS: my phone doesnt boot into recovery it comes up with the samsung galaxy s3 gt 19300 logo then it comes up with the cwm recovery icon in the middle of my screen and 'clockwordmod recovery v6.0.6.4' at the bottom of the screen then restarts itself.
i dont know what to try i have looked around, didnt want to create a new thread just wanted to find out if anyone has any idea of what i can do except for buying a new volume down button thats my last resort apprently its £35 to fix
easy way to fill up you thanks meter guys as any sort of input and advice is extremely appreciated.
alphadavid99 you fried your lcd when you flashed cwm made for note in the other thread.
Hi i have the issue... I am able to get in Recovery and Download Mode.
While in recovery i had formatted the whole internal memory and tried flashing about three AOSP ROMs (Formatting each time before Flashing) but the only result was the endless boot up screen (not boot loop).
Then i tried flashing a sammy ROM and it worked...
Could someone tell me why am I able to flash Sammy ROM but not AOSP (such as ARCHIDROID & SLIMBEAN).
My Model is GT-i9300
Current Modem - XXUGMK6
Current ROM - S4 Revolution ROM (TM)
Thanks in advance for your time if someone has any suggestions

[Q] Stuck at Samsung splash screen - Need to backup data

The phone was working fine until the battery was empty. I tried to charge it and turn it on, but it's stuck at the Samsung logo splash screen. Holding the power button only restarts the device, so to turn it off I'll have to take the battery out. I don't know how to fix this, and if a factory reset is the only option, I need to backup my data first which I currently don't know how to either (without accessing the OS).
I've got to the Android System Recovery 3e menu and tried clearing cache, which did not help. The option to do a factory reset is also there, but I need to backup my data first, and I don't even know if this will fix the problem.
I'm also able to enter download mode.
When connected to my PC it detects an unknown device named 'samsung_android", and it shows up in adb. I've tried doing a backup through adb, but it wanted me to unlock the screen to accept the backup, which I could not, because I'm stuck at the splash screen.
Is there anything I can do to save my data? Anything through adb? Install root (never done this before)?

Hey mate, can you get into the recovery mode? Try flashing the TWRP recovery and boot by pressing power button + home button + volume up and find an option to mount your USB storage via USB cable and see if your phone's folder tree is available from the Windows Explorer and hopefully you can backup your data by then. Just make sure you have all the drivers ready.
Hope that helps.

Yeah, I can get into recovery mode. But how do I get the TWRP to my phone? Do I have to put it on my external memory card and then load it from there?
And I could only find it for a S2 Exhilarate SGH-i577 device. Does it matter if my phone is a S2 GT-I9100?
I've never rooted my phone earlier. Is a root necessary to flash a ROM?

Correct. Put the TWRP zip on your external and flash it normally via recovery mode such as CWM not the android 3e recovery. Or find an odin flashable zip for yoyr device.
I am very sure there is one for I9100 because I ran into the exact same problem before and managed to figure it out. You just have to search for it can't give you a link because I'm on mobile now.
You need to root your phone in order to install a new recovery such as TWRP/CWM or even flash new kernel and ROM.
Good luck.

When you say mount it do you mean trying to send the files over through ADB or just mounting the SD card or putting it into download mode?
If its the ADB issue, try to put your tablet into download mode by using the volume key and power button, then download odin and its stock firmware and flash it using odin. Your tablet should restore to factory defaults using that method
If its the SD card then use the method above as it sounds like recovery may have lost it a bit
If you can not put the phone into download mode (which i doubt is the issue you may want to think about a USB jig as they sometimes get past those issues but from your description I doubt its a hard brick as it gets to the logo
2 things you can try!

I really new to this, i mean writing to help people, so don't flock me.
First, you say your device still have the recharging lights on when shut down, it tells me it's not only a software error, but some short circuit has happend.
Have you tried a hardreset? search google for your model if you doesn't know how.
From what i can read you still have the CWM Recovery, so download Android-SDK and try flashing the recovery from ADB (Found in platform tools.
Last but most tricky, if nothing helps, you' have to disassemble your device and temporary disable the battery, them press and hold the start button down for 5 sec to remove the poweroverload, reassemble again and try ASB adain, you can't reinstall the recovery directly from the SD

Try to uninstall your usb drivers , the go here at the end of the first post (OP - this is Convert kernel zip to tar tool, but no need to do any conversion), download usb drivers and odin. At post #4 you have pre made kernels. Flash any kernel you want DorimanX or Gustavo in AP or PDA box and make sure re-partition NOT ticked. After a successful flash you phone will boot and stays at the boot. take off battery and insert again , power up with power on + home + vol up to enter recovery and format ONLY these partition /data& cache - dalvik cache, system, preload. Once in recovery, your will be able to mount usb or mtp device to recover your files and try flashing a custom rom!

ok my phone is not charging anymore. it says low battery cant enter download when i enter download mode. when i charge my i9100 it gets stuck at a grey battery with a android loading circle in the middle. i think this may need to go to the repair shop. when i try to just power on, I now have a yellow triangle with Samsung Galaxy S2 i9100 screen and its just stuck there
sorry for the late reply, but it failed, im going to take it to repair shop

Fair play...If you feel there really is no other option.....at least you tried....
Just beware, you *could* end up paying more for a repair than the cost of a working secondhand S2....
