So I'm switching to T-Mo hopefully within a couple of weeks, and I really like the S3 and the One S. I like the S3 more, but I don't know if it's worth the extra $130. Opinions?

If you're cost conscious, get the Galaxy Nexus for $350 from Play with t-mobile's $30/month, 100 minute 5GB prepaid plan (supplementing the 100 minutes with a google voice caller like groove ip). Over the course of two years, the lower plan cost would save you approximately $1000 (assuming that you would've otherwise gotten an $80 plan, not unrealistic including taxes).
Why the Galaxy Nexus? Because it's pentaband. Unfortunately the unlocked versions of the S3 and One X don't support t-mobile's frequencies as far as I know. You could buy the t-mobile version up front, but you'll eat an extra $300 that way for a phone that won't even work with any other carriers if you change your mind. You'd still save $700ish, but it's hardly ideal.

I own a One S and have used an S3. My opinion is that the S3 is only superior in its display. Speed-wise, the S3 and One S are neck and neck. Some tests even show the One S beating out the S3.
At the speeds these phones are at, you won't notice a difference in the overall experience between the 2. However, most people tend to get the S3, since it's the newer phone and has the nicer screen. I personally chose the One S since its screen is only 4.3 inches, which makes it much more comfortable to hold.
Either way, you can't go wrong. Both have good mod support and plenty of ROMs that range from modded stock ROMs, all the way to CM10/AOKP/AOSP roms.

Seriously though non-expandable memory kinda kills it for me on the One S and reading the display isn't as sharp as the s3 is a deal breaker for me. One S with non-removable battery cover? Sealed? Ugh what a nightmare..
my answer is different.
if you have big hands or like touchwiz, then use gs3, BUT if you don't have that big of hands(me), or like sense 4(me), then use one s as that is smaller
and even though gs3 has removable storage, it still cannot be used as ext. so all the people you hear saying that sd card is good, I have just shot down half their aurgument
so if you buy an 8 gig galaxy s 3, you actually have less storage space than a one s as you 64 gb SD card is useless except for games and movies
so recap: if you has big hands then get galaxy s 3, if you has small hands get one s
or be me and wait for htc one x+

an external sd can also be used as swap partition serving as more ram. you can also install your apps on the sd card instead of internal memory. s3 is probably the best phone out there so far.
S3!!! HTC uses cheap material, i had the HTC G2 and thats my last!
Hello fellow noters
I recently out of decided to sell my galaxy note to get the nexus 4 ( to use on simple mobile) and to my dismay the g-note i717 has a really really low resale value. From what I have seen on ebay and craigslist the average cost for a i717 is around the low 300s, which for me is bad, Very bad. If you take into account the money that paypal and ebay take for the commission of the sale you are left with 250 something. This probably has to do with the release of the note2 only 6 months later than the original note.
I'm not complaining because this is still a great device but the loss of value took me by surprise, but I will definitely think twice before getting another Samsung device close to its release date.
In conclusion my friends I would advice you that if you want a Samsung device wait 4-6 months and buy it out of contract for 1/2 the price and if you are planning on reselling it later take a deep breath before looking for the resale values.
IMHO I see the Nexus 4 as a Downgrade from the Galaxy Note 1...

All android phones lose there value fast because theres a new better one every week. The reason something like iphone hold there value so long is because there is only 1 a yr.

I see it as a huge upgrade because
I don't need more than 16GB of storage because I don't put 50000 songs on my phone when I don't listen to them all anyways.
I don't really need to remove the battery ever, and it has better battery life than my note which is horribly awful.
It has android 4.2 official from the get go, and will get future android updates a week or so after announcement. Current note doesn't have official 4.1 yet, and 4.2 is out! And CM10 is still not stable. I'm so done waiting 6 months for an android update, especially with how awesome the changes have become.
Screen is a bit smaller yes, but it's higher PPI.
2GB of RAM is very necessary for anyone who is a power user. I constantly have to reload apps.
Quad core krait is awesome and should never lag. note1 lags often.
It doesn't have LTE which does actually suck but will be better for battery life and HSPA 42 in Canada is pretty good
And it's $350!
You could argue the Note2 is a better phone than the nexus4 and in many ways it is, but I still think getting android updates is more important for me. And the price is great.
I'll be selling my note1 for $300 next week. It's lower than I'd like but allows me to upgrade to the nexus4 for very cheap!

The main reason I'm switching is because even with the blaze radios my speeds are very very slow. I am going to miss the spen, and my 32 gb sd card but due to the lack of support from Sammy to their devices and the low resale value I refuse to spend 700$ on a note 2.
The reason for this post is to tell you guys to get prepared for the loss of value when you try to upgrade from the note.

I bought my og note when att was doing their $50 refurb note upgrade deal. Mines legit very rarely reboots even at 1836mhz . I'm gonna wait till something better is available for another deal like that. Then you don't have to trip on ever losing money.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I don't like contracts much less with att. This is mostly for people like me that buy off contract and use pre paid that the depreciation of the phone affect us. IMO signing a contract with att or Verizon is like selling your soul for a discount on a device you end up paying triple by the end.
that sucks you should have waited and sold it on CL and would have received more money...You were in to much of a hurry to sell if that you lost money...Everyone else is getting 350 min for there device....And the nexus 4 sucks...YOUR complaining the note 1 has no value??? I haven't sold it yet and I'm not complaining, I love this thing. I don't really mind if the nexus loses value because it only costs 350$, but that is another topic.
the Note does have a low resale value if you take in to account that it used to cost around 700$ and now you have to negotiate with someone to barely get half of your investment. Samsung products do devaluate quite fast because they flood the market with their phones, release new version every 6 months and they give retailers the option to sell the phone at the price they want. I got an S3 four months ago for 615 and I went to the same store today and saw it for 500. There is nothing bad with that, if you use it to your advantage and wait a while to get a great product for 2/3 of the its first retail price.

How do you figure it is triple? I have been on At&t since 1994. Not going to change. Have 5 lines with them. Always had great service. It would make no.sense not to get it subsidized for me. Going to to pay same price for service whether off or on contract.

The triple is for the overpaying the service (I used to pay 120 more or less monthly on att for the past 5 years now I pay 50 everything unlimited) and if att works for you awesome, but all of this talk about subsidizing strays from the fact that the note devaluates pretty fast.
I've never seen a phone hold value...Technology is constanly upgraded and replacing other models every month..Just the way it is..Computers are worth half as less in about 3 months as well...

Honestly if you want to sell your note then that's perfectly fine. You don't need to justify your decision to sell to the people on this forum because what is it to them if you sell or keep? Lol I don't know why people get butt hurt over it when it has nothing to do with them. Will they be using the phone or is it for you? Also don't let people's opinions discourage you. The nexus 4 is awesome and I want to get one as well....note is great but i have decided it's just too big for me. I am a very active person and it is actually getting in the way rather than simplifying my life. Can't go running with it. Can't take it to the gym..nope! Can't walk around the gym with the note in my gym shorts lol. I don't want to shell out additional money for another mp3 player.
I agree with you on the resale value. I put mine up on Craigslist for 430 and got so many low ball offers it's ridiculous. I am just going to keep it now ... meh.
I am buying a Note II this week, but only because my corp plan lets me it it for $200. The Spousal Unit would never allow a $750 + tax phone purchase in this house.
If I get $300 for the Note I then I am happy, since it lets me purchase the next upgrade for next to nothing.
That said, I am thinking of holding on to the Note I until December when the official JB comes out. The Note I does lag on stock rom a bit (never tried the custom JB ones), and I want to be able to sell it to non-XDA folks with full S-pen support. I am thinking that the Note I stock experience will be much better in December, and that if I show it to a couple of people I know they will be happier with it then. If an offer comes by before then, I'll let it go at that time I suppose.
My brother just sold his Note for $300 to a guy in Sudbury. He was a bit disappointed as well.
I told him it's a niche phone with low demand in a small market.

Read the important part in red which you missed. If you have ONE LINE, non-contract makes sense in some cases. If you have more than one, nope.
As for the OP's whinge, who cares, everything that isn't a "durable product" devalues fast, think about how many THOUSANDS your car devalues the second it's "used".

100% true! the nexus 4 will be worth nothing as Google drops its price, and I sold one of my skyrockets for 350 on Craig's list so I'd sell my note 1 for $400 up, and I'm in Fl too. Its all about the condition of the phone. If your note is mint like mine you'll sell it for $400 cause people will rather pay $400 for perfect condition than $300 for some old scratched up junk. In 6 mo. Your $350 nexus will be worth $199 or less cause its used. How's that for devaluation.

Alright, I have an iPhone 5 on Sprint with a family plan. My mum is tired of the bill jumping up for every little thing and paying over $200 for it just to have them shut it off a week later, so I'm going to be moving to tmobile. I have two Photon 4g's, a Nexus 4, an iPhone 4(cracked), and iPhone 5. Out of all my phones they are in near perfect condition except the 4, obviously. I want the HTC One; bad. But I wanted the Nexus 4 bad when I read about that too and now I can't even use it since I'm not on Tmobile. I recently got a new job and things are looking up for me money wise so I'm a bit more comfortable paying my own bills now, but I don't want to go to Tmo just to be paying $100 again. I know about the plan prices and the 'renting' a phone basically, but I plan to pay that all off ASAP.
I need help with two things;
1. Can someone explain the tmobile plans more thoroughly? I know companies always have something not true or stretched and I'm hearing all over commercials Tmo has unlimited everything for $50, but on the website I'm seeing the tag next to it with 500MB of data. Are the commercials not true?
2. Would anyone here recommend trading in some of my already android phones to help pay off the One and it's down payment? The only phone I want to keep is the i5, and maybe my Nexus 4. I don't see the reason to keep two android devices when one is way better than the other, but I want the nexus because I've been reading it's like a hacker/modder/rooter, whatever, play world. 1. The $50 "Unlimited" everything gives you unlimited text, talk and 500 MB of "High speed" (4g/LTE/3g depending on your coverage). After you've hit that point they throttle data to 2G "Edge" speeds until the end of the month. They call it unlimited because they won't ever charge you for going over your "high speed" data. For $10 more you can add 2 more GB of high speed data (2.5 GB total) or for $20 more you can get actual unlimited "high speed" data (it might be $20 and $30 more, I'm not sure about single plans, I'm on a family plan and I know those are the rates to upgrade the lines for my family plan).
2. Instead of trading in your phones you could sell them on swappa. You'll definitely get more money through swappa then just trading in at T-Mobile. While it's true the Nexus 4 probably has the most development of any phone out right now, all the roms are a variation of stock android (CyanogenMod, AOKP, Paranoid Android, etc.), which are all awesome, but now that the Google Play Edition of the HTC One is out, you could get the best of both worlds (Sense 5 is really nice also) on an HTC One. The stock Android roms are already very functional and should only get better now that the devs have their hands on the GPE roms.
Having used both, I prefer the Nexus 4, mainly because I like the way it felt in hand more than the HTC One (ALL phones should put their power button on the side IMO). But the HTC One screen and speakers are everything you've heard about them and more, and stock Sense 5 is sooo smooth, and the custom Roms and Kernels add some nice features and help improve the battery life.

I'd look into the Play edition a little more if you're considering it for T-Mobile, I've read that the hardware isn't built to spec on a per carrier basis, and is lacking the radios for the T-Mobile LTE spectrum.

Wait, so is there a difference between the tmobile version and the google play edition? Also, after a small amount of reading can't I just flash the GPE over to my HTC One from any carrier and it would be the same thing?

^^^^^Correct it is missing the AWS band needed to utilize T-Mobile's 4G. Sorry I meant that now that the GPE is out, converting a T-Mobile HTC One to a GPE should be possible in the near future if OP still wanted to enjoy stock Android.

I've been checking spec comparisons between them and a few other phones on multiple sites, but wanted to see if any of you had a first hand opinion between these choices.
Right now I'm looking at the Moto X (32GB) , LG G2, HTC ONE, and Galaxy S4, was thinking about getting the Nexus 5 and jumping carriers, but I really can't see any benefit to it that the other phones don't have aside from vanilla android.

My biggest pros for any of the newer ones are the scratch resistant screen, more LTE bands & more GSM bands for when I travel.
As well as NFC would be fun to mess around with, as well as the faster cpu / gpu / more ram. Granted I can't think of anything the rezound hasn't been able to run aside from GTA-VC which is only second hand to me as I haven't tried it.

I have the HTC one and I can tell u it's GREAT. I didn't think any phones were worth upgrading from the rezound this year but when my phone cracked 3 weeks ago I had to get a new one. I went threw the same comparisons but instead of nexus 5 it was note 3. I knew the specs of the note 3 were the best of them all but I really don't like touchwiz so that was out of the question and the s4. Then I saw the moto x but it was still $199 at Verizon and $99 on every other carrier plus no moto maker so that was out of the question. Then it was the one vs g2. I used both at a Verizon store and well the G2 was nice the one and it's metal build were just so much nicer. Also the speakers were a great add on and I wasn't really feeling the button on the back of the G2. Also the one has the highest ppi of all the phones not the s4. Either phone is a great choice but I can tell u I get 3.5-4 hours screen on time easy with auto brightness on the one and about a day and a half usage moderate. Also I have experienced no lag whatsoever on the one

Any of them would be step up, you wouldn't be disappointed at all, but the LG G2 is a beast (3000mah battery) if you are stuck with Verizon for whatever reason, but if you can jump ship the Nexus 5 on a pre-paid GSM carrier is the way to go, for an unlimited talk/text plan with 2-3Gb data it will run you $45-$60/month... saving about $40-$55 monthly over a standard VZW plan easily paying for the phone in 6-9 months.

Super smooth/fast, beautiful screen, cool speakers...hate the UI. The more I tried to do basic tasks the less I liked it. The two buttons didn't help either. Basically, I recommend going into a store and just pretending like the phones are yours. Specs and reviews and videos and what everyone else thinks doesn't really matter in the end, the phone has work with you.
I'm sure with some new roms etc I could find a way to be happy with the One...but I need some time to get over my frustrations first good luck!

I was holding out hope that the Nexus 5 would some how come to VZW. While I was waiting, my wife picked out the G2. I put Scott Scrosler's Clean ROM and she really enjoys this phone. I've been playing with it and waiting for the Black Friday/Cyber Monday deals. I found a way to get the G2 for free. This phone is great and there's a lot of dev support. If you have to stick with VZW and the price of all the phones is the same, I recommend the G2.

They did for a while, but @beaups got it working... at least until the KK update drops and VZW tries again.

I have had the one for a little over a month. Will say its a good phone with good battery life. Sure there is the possible purple tent issue but nor all of them has this problem. Best to check the camera out by covering the lens with your hand and see if you get the purple tent. Rooting is easy and as always some great ROMs already out there. The all aluminium body is a real plus for this phone.
I tried the camera on the moto line of phones and the picture just turned out grainy and bad. Even with the one purple tent in low light settings its still takes a great pic just like the s4 does. Think HTC finally got sense under control as its not laggy and doesn't seem as a battery drain like older versions of sense was. In the end people likes different things and you will never know till you use it. Nice thing Verizon has the 14 day return policies. Good luck in your choice.

the internal storage IOP/S is way higher then older phones

I ended up ordering the LG G2 (staying with verizon) from bestbuy.
last sunday, (the 17th) I noticed that bestbuy had all of the lg g2s marked down to 100$ and had a 50$ gift card, so I checked it out on the best buy website, and saw that you had to bring in a working smartphone to trade in to get it at that price, but if you ordered online, it took the 50$ off instantly.
While looking on the Bestbuy website at the LG G2s, for some reason, even though every other carriers version was $99.99, the verizon one was listed at $49.99.
I ordered it online, thinking they would kick the order out and that it was an errror or something.
I figured $50 for the phone and a $50 bestbuy giftcard, probably an error or an early black friday price mistake.
They sent an email the next day saying there was an urgent problem with the order and call within 48 hrs or it would be cancelled, I called and the rep couldnt figure out why it sent me that email, and after being on hold for about 30 minutes came back and said they called shipping and had them force the order though.
They also said they spoke to verizon and had it activated, I didn't think anything of it at the time and just said thanks.
After the call, i put the phone down and a few minutes later went to call my wife, but when I hit send, it rang and then said "this phone is not registered with verizon" or something to that effect, then I remembered the rep said they activated the new phone. FACEPALM time.
I tried a few other numbers, same error message. tried 611, it rang! went through 3 reps telling them exactly what I thought happened (the bestbuy person got confused and got someone from vzw to activate a new phone on my line w/o a new imei or new sim somehow). 3rd rep i spoke with said that was exactly what happened. took about 10-15 minutes but reset everything back to my original imei/sim (the htc rezound). so now i can make calls again.
2 days later got a shipment notification email.
of note- I noticed monday morning when I logged into bestbuys website to check the order status (this is before receiving the problem email) to see if it shipped yet, and the price was up to $99.99 for all carriers including verizon, and now had an extra line on the page- it's 150 at the store, and when you bring in a smartphone to trade in, you get a 50$ gift card that you then HAVE to use in the transaction to get the price down to $99.99. online orders still took the price to $99.99 immediately.
Been checking today since it's supposed to arrive today, and it looks like it's back up to 199.99 and they are still doing the gift card, but you have to trade in a smartphone and use the giftcard on the spot to get it down to 150.
tl:dr-
50$ for the G2, free shipping (but slowwwwwww, totally should have paid the 10$ to get it in 2 days if i knew it was going to take 7 days) and 50$ best buy gift card.
and i finally got the email an hour ago for the 50$ bestbuy egiftcard.
of note, they pricematch, so I'm hoping someone lowers it to $.01 for black friday and then I can go get my $50 back and have it for free!
chose the g2 since it was marked down so low and has the faster CPU/GPU, even though i won't be able to change the battery (but it does have the biggest stock battery at 3000ma, which is awesome since my std rezound battery only lasts a few hours and the extended battery doesn't even last a day anymore)

after a week with the G2, i've got to say it's amazing. I still have the rezound and will start tinkering with it since i finally have another device, but the G2 is insanely fast at everything so far. love it. can't recommend it enough.
It seems that of all the VZW Android phones for sale new today, that the G3 is about the most modifiable unit available.
I'm seriously thinking about switching to VZW and buying a new G3 like today or tomorrow but have some questions about the firmware version the new units are currently shipping with...
Anybody know what the currently shipping firmware version is on brand new units?
And is it still rootable / able to have custom ROMS installed on it? Or have all the exploits that allowed this been discovered and plugged up?
I am not a complete stranger to rooting and custom ROMs, having done this to my HTC Desire, but that was nearly 3 years ago and I've been running the same CM7 build on it taken from a June 2012 nightly build that was an exceptionally good one. And yes, I'm still running a 4 year old US Cellular android 2.x phone :laugh: because it's been a rock-solid juggernaut that's always been dependable and I've gotten every penny's worth out of it. It's time to move on to a more modern phone plus I need the better network coverage of VZW's network and nation-wide data that USCC simply doesn't have.
I've read thru a couple hundred pages here on XDA about the VS985 and understand that the G3 can generally be downgraded to an older version of the firmware to facilitate these things, but there seem to be some caveats on getting into download mode on later versions and just want to be comfortable that I'm not going to get a phone that has been finally locked down into a dead-end street of running only official software.

plus, it completely annihilates the g3 in almost every aspect except for maybe stock cam, but there are 2 aosp compatible cams that are very good.
I looked at the N6, but there's a couple things I really don't like about it.
It's too big. The G3 is pushing my limits for a phone size, I would actually like it to be a bit smaller.
No SD card is a real showstopper for me. Google is retarded for doing that.
Non-removable battery isn't quite a showstopper, but still a big turn-off.
The G3 being a 2014 year model, is still quite a capable device but is now also becoming very affordable now that the 2015 phones like the HTC M9 and the Sammy GS6 are hitting the market and capturing the attention.
Normally, I'd just pay retail and do a month-2-month plan, but by signing up for Verizon Edge 24 month 0% finance plan to buy the phone, the extra $15/month discount on the data plan almost pays for the phone... it's actually cheaper for the whole 24 month period to do it this way than to pay full retail or do the $99 2 year subsidized purchase. I'll be paying nearly the same exact monthly bill by switching to VZW and getting this new phone as I'm currently handing over each month to USCC and getting crappy data, no data roaming, no tethering, and operating a 4 yr old phone.
Being able to root&rom the G3 even with a locked bootloader is also a definite plus as well. I'm not a constant tinkerer with my phones, but I do want the option to have root, debloat the apps and/or run a custom rom if I so desire.
yea, the n6 seemed big for the first week or so i had it, but i love it now, and the development is bar none.
yes there is development for g3 but its limited to a handful of roms.
not trying to put the g3 down, i have one, just if you can get used to the n6, its a no brainer if you like to mod your phone.

You won't be mad at yourself if you grab a g3 though, especially if you're saving $ & upgrading your service. It is big, not as big as others, but you'll get used to it and probably actually prefer it after watching some videos on your qhd screen and taking some pics with the excellent g3 camera. You may have to roll back to get root depending on your version, but that's not a difficult thing to do at all. Once you're rolled back you can have root and custom recovery in @ 10-15min...super easy.
Another option is you can always take a phone for a test drive depending on where you buy it, so if you're undecided maybe that would be best so you have no regrets. Amazon has a 2 week return policy & they ship really fast, so if you get a phone and don't like it just return it and get something else for no charge :good:

Looks like the G3 is going to be good to go for my needs and desires. I'm a tightwad and the G3 seems to be a great bang for the buck value right now so Im going to pull the trigger either tomorrow or Thursday and get one. Even though the Bumped roms available for it might be a bit limited for a hardcore modder, I think they'll be perfectly suited for me. All I want is mainly root and de-bloat the apps I'll never use. I do want a good camera and lots of storage so this will likely be a good handset for me.... just hope it lasts for 2 years :fingers-crossed:
