Volte for G2 and not the G3? - Verizon LG G3

Why was the G2 the first to get Volte?

because that was the device they tested it on leading up to the launch. The G3 hadn't come out yet as they were testing.

It's also on the galaxy s5 so when did testing start?

Not sure, I just remember reading somewhere that they picked those two phones to start testing, and instead of re-writing everything for a newer phone, they just released what they had.

I went to the feature change page for my G3 and didn't see the feature there. Can anybody else here see the feature?

No one can because Verizon hasn't enabled it yet.

They just recently got the 4.4.4 update, so it would make sense as to why the S5 just barely got in and the G2 has been there for over a year.
I'm sure once we get the 4.4.4 update we will have VoLTE capability.

The waiting game.

VZW is in a "Network Freeze" this week, through the next. They are adding a ton of new things. VoLTE is just one of them. They are doing the G3 first because it was test. There is testing on the S5, and G3 as well now. It will be added in the G3 4.4.4 update.

So, is there now a G3 4.4.4 update in testing at VZW?

VoLTE has been rolled out. If you have a compatible phone (either an S5 for a G2) then you will be able to add the feature under the "add features" section on your "my account" page. It also comes with free basic visual voicemail. Once you do that, you should have the "volte" feature box enabled in your "mobile data" settings on your phone. I tested this last night with a buddy who has a G2 and video calls/HD voice calls were sweet. the volte calls were crystal clear.

The VLG G3 came with basic visual voicemail, but I didn't much like it. I guess no VoLTE yet, anyway ?
I will enable it on my wife's G2.

Still haven't seen anything hit the test teams desk.

It's pretty annoying actually. You think you buy the latest and greatest only to find out you didn't. I'm thinking more and more everyday I should have gotten the S5 instead.
My only hope is that the boot loader gets cracked. I don't believe the Samsung bootloaders will ever be unlocked again....but at least some have safestrap.

So basically from what you are saying, is that for once it is no Verizon's fault, but LG's fault for not releasing an update for us.
Figures, LG still hasn't learned. Bummer is they already released like 3 or so performance updates for the Euro G3, but nothing for the US yet. Dam slackers.
From a few threads I've came across, the Euro updates help with performance and the phone seems a bit more smooth now.

Don't be too negative just yet. Maybe they're working on going straight to Android L? Who knows, certainly not us...

I am not at all sure I want to be required to install new Android L sometime next Spring as the only option for correcting some of the problems and performance issues with the v10b version Verizon shipped on this device.
Aren't some of the non-Verizon versions of the G3 already on 10I or better ?
I would like one update before an initial L release for a better Kit Kat.
Sent from my VS985 4G using Tapatalk

LG should at least fix their bugs in KK before they release L.
Some people may prefer to stay on KK and not update to L, so they deserve at least a stable version of KK with good performance.

So any new news on this?

Return for next Nexus?

So coming from the Verizon gnex I miss the openness of doing whatever I wanted with the phone. And while I do love this phone, I'm contemplating returning it at the end of my 14 days in order to wait and see what the next Nexus is like. I know people are doubting it's coming to Verizon, but I would rather have that option open to me if it does come to big red. Anyone else is this same boat?

Are you talking about the fact that the bootloader is still locked?
It hasn't even been a week yet, and the phone isn't even out on all carriers.
I have faith that the device will be modded soon. Just hang in there.
(Also, if the FCC documents prove accurate, Verizon is not going to carry the next Nexus.)

I also came from the Galaxy Nexus and miss the open architecture of the G2... but after rooting it and making a few minor changes I'm liking the G2 more and more.
I suspect the bootloader issue will be resolved soon and then we'll be able to load Cyanogenmod or other ROM's on the G2. Then we'll have the fastest phone with the best screen on the market.
I'd suggest you root now and load a root keeper to block any potential OTA that will further complicate the bootloader issue.
unless android 4.4 is set up to completely change battery life and how the phones will work with battery... I do not think the 2300 mah battery will compare to the 3000. So to me G2 will be a better bet, I guess that depends on the person

Actually Ive read of and experienced better battery life on 4.3 (on my Gnex), so its possible 4.4 might be better still.
If the bootloader gets unlocked on the G2, I can only imagine how fast the phone will run with something like Vanir or Commotio.
And I dont think VZW will ever get another "pure Google" phone, especially if the lockdown they did on the S4 is any indication.
I would never buy a nexus from verizon or at&t, or any big carrier lol.

If i were to purchase this device (very close to deciding this way), how do i do a "root keeper"? I saw on here how to root the device but never heard of this "root keeper" thing? Sorry still new to this whole android scene coming from iphone 4 and now running HTC One X+, my first ever android device and loving it! Just don't see how other companies can top this device any time soon and not at all impressed nor need this new HTC Blink Feed crap that they will push on all new/upcoming HTC devices that probably still won't be as amazing as this device in the next 6 months. Thanks!
The new Nexus, when it passed through the FCC, didn't carry the bands necessary to operate on Verizon's network. That is to say, Verizon won't have it.
I'm sure the next Nexus will be great, and I considered holding off on a purchase until it launched. However, in the end, I opted for hardware once again over software, and the G2 has all the bells and whistles in the hardware department. The Nexus is a fantastic option though if you favor software and being completely free to customize your experience.

There's an app call "OTA root keeper" and works quite well in keeping root after an OTA. Worked on my Asus tablet and my samsung note 2. Have not tried it on my samsung s4 though as I haven't gotten any OTA yet.

If worse comes to worse and after doing the above the app doesn't work, can i just still do the same root procedure after the OTA? Thanks!

Ya but make sure when you open the app you do a "protect root" first before doing the OTA. After OTA open the app again and do a "restore root". Thats it. In some cases you may need to reboot again after restore root.

Not this year but next Fall is a real possibility when Verizon is planning on introducing 4g-only phones late next year. Once VoLTE turns on and CDMA exits the scene, all you need is band 4 and 13 compatibility in the next LTE/GSM Nexus.

Thats a good point, software can only take you so far in the long run anyways.
I am still stuck in this conundrum, keep the G2 with the real possibility that it may never get AOSP but stay on unlimited on Verizon's network, or return it and wait for the Nexus 5 and switch to T-Mobile unlimited with worse coverage, or Aio with better coverage but 8mbps speed limit and 7GB/month data limit. Decisions, decisions.
EDIT: Well, I just talked to a guy at work who said T-Mobile's network around here sucks so that's out. Now it's stay on VZW with G2, stay on VZW with GS4 Developers Edition for my flashing addiction and AOSP or go to AT&T or one of the many MVNOs who use their network and get the Nexus 5, not an easy choice.
Id definitely keep this. The Nexus 5 wont be coming to VZW, but it seems like it'll be the same hardware as the G2. So yeah stick with us. I as well am completely expecting a BL unlock soon.

I got my LG G2 on September 20 2013 at AT&T, paid $540.00 regular price for it. My G2 runs stock AT&T, not rooted. Never a problem before the official 4.4.2 Kit Kat upgrade via OTA. The bad after Kit Kat; I have to use zoom to open my apps at Google Play Store, now they don't opens the normal way. Knock on to open the screen is gone dead.

Official AT&T OTA upgrade corrupted ? This guys are Saints, or I'm wrong. Ha, ha, no my friend. I already go to AT&T store, this is the store where I open my account four years ago, where I bought my first android phone HTC ONE X, my second one HTC ONE X+ with 64GB internal memory, my third one HTC ONE, my current LG G2. I explain the situation and they said “ What ? ”, ha, ha, Land of IPhone this AT&T guys. They're really nice, but don't know nothing about Android. They said " let's take your G2 away just to fixed it, you can go with this freaking IPhone for some days ”. No way, my G2 is great even without knock on screen. I decided just wait for the release of the LG G3 or go for the Samsung Galaxy S5. Don't make a decision yet, will see. But one thing is clear like butter on bread, AT&T is IPhone Land. This guys are nice but don't even know of the existence of XDA, Android Central, or any other Android forum.

Here's a very important one, in my view, possibly a breakthrough for Android. With KitKat, there is virtually no lag when answering calls. I can swipe the Answer button, speak instantly and be heard. I'm coming from an S3 mini which had at least one second of silence after answering calls, so I'm excited about this.
There was not much lag to speak of in 4.2.2 anyway, but now it's completely gone.

My guess, and everyone's reply is a guess....Verizon is waiting on L to be released. No point in them spending millions getting us 4.4.4 or w/e lil patches there are out there. Verizon is the slowest carrier out there to give updates, so hopefully you have patience.
I don't really care about official updates. I just want the bootloader to get unlocked. If that happens, the devs will keep us up to date, better than Verizon does.

I seem to remember a patch or two on the V G2 when it first came out. Sometimes these bug patches do more than the big updates which usually lead to their own issues...
What does E offer that you're so anxious to get?
My G3 works great, all the features I expect work.
Is there something you're missing that E will solve, or is this just a symptom of crack flashing?
Not hurting for an update currently, everything is fast and stable.
Only update I'm waiting for is Android L (5.0 / Lollipop) which id expect us to receive that update from Verizon by February at the earliest... sadly... Android L will bring a lot to the table and improve the overall experience, any other update is just small bugs or security fixes.

Which is something that wouldn't be high on my list of priorities, since the VZW G3 gets better radio signal than did my G2 and Galaxy Nexus before it. I can comfortably leave my phone on data and not be concerned the battery will be dead by the time I leave work. The metal superstructure around the building plays hell with 3G/4G switching.

I have the 3G/4G switching issues quite often with mine. I gave my wife my SGS4 and it is rock solid at the same locations.
I have a LG Tone headset that was solid on the SGS4, but it cuts in and out on the G3 when it is in my pants pocket.
I had a SGS3 a few years ago and got it when it first came out. It had similar issues. The cell reception became a lot more solid with the first radio update and the bluetooth improved an update or two later.
I'm having issues with heat/screen dim when using bluetooth/nav (GPS)/screen on in the car (late afternoon sun).
From reading it looks like it's improved in the later firmwares.

Common Verizon, where's our LP WiFi sync fix?

We are going on 2 months with clear knowledge on Verizon and LG's part of the evil WiFi sync issue. Last I spoke to Verizon, they said that LG was aware of the issue and a patch would be eminent, but they needed LG to fix the build. LG stated that a fix was due ASAP....hmmm wtf? I just recommended this phone to a friend, but I'm going to look like a stupid dumb person after hyping it up if that friend can't receive his notifications. Fall?! Are you kidding me?
Had to flash back to 23C yesterday after I was having major texting issues with SD. Figured the patch had to be sooner than fall. ARG.
Verizon wants us all to buy G4s or S6edges or iPhones, signing up for another two years of bondage so we can afford to have a phone that actually works more or less correctly, for a while anyway.
I run my vs985 on KitKat still. Rooted and debloated with stock camera and a pre-VoLTE radio. I am having no problems with that at all. Why chase Lollipop ? Its not as good a version of Android as KitKat, even if it were working as designed, which it isn't even on my Nexus 5 with 5.1.1.
I agree kit Kat has no issues so I've stuck with it.
I wonder if the update that is coming this fall might be Android M. Doubtful since the nexus devices will probably be released then. And LG has to put there skin on top of UI. So it looks like LG is probably going back to the old LG. With wanting customers to upgrade all the time and not putting out any or very few updates for there devices. Since LG is now saying they are going to skip 5.1.
http://www.phonearena.com/news/LG-H...device-could-go-straight-to-Android-M_id70466
I went from a g2 to a g3, now I'll probably go to a nexus device to actually get bug fixes. Granted Google screws up on software. But at least they don't ignore major problems for a long time.
No, it won't be m. LG posted release dates for all g3 variants. 5.1 rolling out at the end of June for international, and July for all US variants, along with the bump in version are bug fixes. I'll try to find the post on g+....

I couldn't imagine M that quickly. Unless google releases it very soon (doubtful). I thought it would be stupid if they skipped the 5.1 update. Especially since it fixes a lot of the problems with lollipop. But LG did this crap before with not supporting devices. That is why no one was buying there android devices. But corporate greed is huge.
you won;t see M on the G3 until 2016 if ever.
The Verizon bug fixes for what we have now will be at least 60 days after Lg releases for the international G3 , thanks to Verizon testing (crippling)
According to LG/Verizon corporate support, small update this fall for WiFi sync bug. And either 5.1, or M next spring. From what I saw on another forum, LG will skip 5.1 and release M next spring.

Just checked out Android Pit. They show no 5.?.? updates for the G3. Looks like we will be left on Lollipop. Or, maybe get M next spring. But, M is just speculation on the news sites.

The G3 is skipping 5.1 and going right to M. Who knows how long it will be though. I don't see why. Brings many fixes....
annoyingduck said:
No, it won't be m. LG posted release dates for all g3 variants. 5.1 rolling out at the end of June for international, and July for all US variants, along with the bump in version are bug fixes. I'll try to find the post on g+....

Great, I really like this phone coming from a Samsung GS3 last July. Looks like I'll be updating to something else in Dec whether its a G4 or next Nexus or N6. Verizon is 75% the issue anyway.
I still don't have the wifi sync issues, besides my email takes a while to load up fully. Besides that runs same as kit Kat. I must be one of the lucky few.... That or just don't realize it, lol!

I think it all depends on the router you are connected to. For me, at home, if I have IPV6 disabled, then I cannot get gmail via my 3rd party app (MailDroid). I had this issue in a hotel as well, which means they probably had IPV6 turned off. Otherwise, I haven't had any issues. I get text messages, etc whether on LTE or WiFi.

Must be... I don't even know. I'll chalk it up to that and run with it.
Looks like even the G4 is not getting the 5.1.1 update. I'm not sure if I trust the source. But if so LG is going back to its old ways and not updating there phones. Which will probably hurt the company bad. Since the competition has gotten better.

Yeah, saw in the forums the Sprint G3, and ATT G3 are all getting their post lollipop fix updates. But, us lucky Verizon users get to wait until the fall for ours. And, LG isn't going to put 5.1.1 on the G3. Everyone keeps assuming we will get M, but, I have read nowhere that LG said we would get M. Its all speculation on websites. Grrrrrr

LG G3 great phone poor updates

The LG G3 is a wonderful phone but when it comes to updates I give it a grade of D-. It took months for the sync problem with WiFi to be fixed. Updates to 5 is behind schedule. Verizon blames LG for the problem.
As a consumer, I do not care who is to blame, I need a solution!
My next phone will be a Nexus phone. If Verizon cannot get me a clean version of the Nexus I dump Verizon and try Google Fi.
What's your feeling on the subject?

Agreed.

If you have grandfathered unlimited, I wouldn't dump that for a virgin carrier.
I have VZW unlimited, and just bought a G3 to replace my shattered Galaxy S4.
Was this a mistake to jump into the G3? I had root, open, generic wifi tether, and a pretty good overall situation with the SGS4, but wanted slightly more modern HW, better resolution and 3GB RAM.
If I go to CM 12.1, will that resolve some of OPs complaints?

Well, since you asked:
The updates to the G3 (including to v5.0) are underwhelming.
As a software developer for over 40 years, I'd like to see more testing before release, not less. Or would we like to be in the shoes of Apple users, who can't boot after an update?
Yes, I look forward to updates, but mostly out of curiosity.
Updates almost never include what I'd like to see added (or removed).
I don't worship my computing devices. I'm interested in what they can do, not the latest UI look (not that it's what you are looking for, but many are).

i also have verizon unlimited, I have been on skydragon 5.0/4.2 kernel for a while now. The wifi has been fixed, I love the phone, the camera is not an iphone camera (sadly, I think they win hands down on the camera), but it is still a great camera. I would recommend you install the hotspot mod from xdabbeb and look into the xcam lg 6.24 app (camera app, for stock roms though, personally, I like it over stock on the lg). I've never used cm, I sort of like stock roms (was on jasmine a long time before skydragon), but I think that you'll like the phone, I also have xposed installed. I haven't had ram issues at all, but I am not a gamer so not sure what your needs are. The 24b modem has been great for me once it was updated. On updates, yes, it has been slow coming from verizon (or lg), but mostly that is a stagefright type fix, and since lgg4 has launched, I just don't think that we are high priority on getting out those updates. I have hear "rumors" that our next update will not be until marsmallow, but they are just that...rumors. Hope you like the g3, personally, I love it.
Thanks, tmord1, that's very helpful information.
All I really want is a nice platform with minimal bloat, high performance and reliability, and the ability to wireless tether on LTE. I am an infrastructure systems and network administrator, so my concerns are along those lines: what makes a device fast, robust and capable, and if possible bypassing the cages that the vendors mandate.
I get my device delivered tomorrow, so I will look into the methods for root and TWRP install. I have unlocked and rooted many devices, going back to the Galaxy Nexus 1 and original Galaxy Tab. So, Odin and ADB don't' bother me.
:good:
If the camera is important to you, updating / patching to CM 12.1 will affect the camera. Apparently, LG camera driver is proprietary (for the laser focus, etc) and not available on ASOP roms.
I loved CM 12.1 on the G3, but I was unhappy with third party camera apps. I had to go back to stock for the camera.
It's a good phone, though.

The latest update 35b and especially the roms based on it like Jasmine 9.1 really improved the phone. I don't feel any need to upgrade devices and feel like the software is much improved even over the kitkat stock rom that I thought was a great start. Lollipop before 5.1.1 was problematic itself and you can blame Google for that.
Agreed 100% the 35 b update made a world of difference as far as speed. The phone is much faster than its ever been on any ROM imho. Btw, has any other carrier updated to 5.1.1?
I switched to liquidsmooth for a more up to date system.
Didn't know that about the camera, that explains why it's taking longer to focus now than when I was on JasmineRom.
Still a great phone.

If you haven't tried JasmineROM 9.1 or SkyDragon 6.x, you might want to give them a try. Both based on the new 5.1.1 stock and it runs really well!
Oh yeah, the 35b update made this feel like a different phone. Plus I don't see any other carrier updating the phone
I see....

We are talking the LG G3, not nexus phones and google fi, at least I am.
LG is still ahead of Motorola and HTC and only slightly below Samsung who is the fastest updating carrier after the nexus devices for having timely updates. I'm grateful I bought this phone after having the S3, as Samsung isn't messing around with allowing any more unlocked devices. Even the new nexus devices have efuses to check for phone modification to affect warranty and pay apps that are not reversible. Also you won't be getting a removable battery and sd card with another manufacturer on a new phone. The LG G3 is a pretty darn good device still to own in my book.

i believe you are a bit incorrect with your efuse analogy, its actually a Qfuse (on the 6p anyways).
post 1 and 2 here, should clear things up a bit for you.

just a heads up, google fi has nothing to do with nexus phones or updates, other than the fi carrier service can only be used on a nexus at this time, and possibly will never be expanded to non google devices.
I think software updates are a problem for any carrier android devices. Most have to wait a month to a couple for a update that an international device gets. This is so annoying. But something that's even more annoying is how most carrier devices come with bootloaders that cannot be unlocked or so locked up it takes month to find a way to bypass them. I had Galax s4 and I bought it once I knew TWRP could be installed. Then when the g3 was released I wanted it but waited until developers got TWRP working then bought my g3. I'm probably gonna keep my G3 until Cyanogenmod stops supporting it or it dies. What ever comes 1st.
