I see in Developer options you can choose which one to use. Which runtime mode is better for our device? I know ART is the future but want to know your guys/gals opinions. I have not tried ART but I'm intrigued.

Art no question....can see the difference and battery life is phenomenal.

I guess the only drawback as of now is if an app is not optimized or are really old to run on ART you'll get some ANR's or app crashes. Have you noticed much of that?
Optimizing apps now!!!! :good:

No app crashes ..had phone a week running Art ....

Art is good, but I found it annoying that it was "optimizing apps" everytime the phone was rebooted.

I know why it lag,
Forgive me if I say anything wrong.
First, it is a mid-low end phone. If I'm right,it don't have a or a dedicated gpu. And the processor clock is around 600-800mhz? (Can't find this processor information)
And without a gpu, games can't load well.

This is true. Your device is actually a low end device. Having only 128mb - 179mb (accessible) ram (which is a major factor) would cause lag.
Go launcher is a Ram hog! It doesn't bother the gaming performance on my G2. I suggest try a different launcher so you can get more ram. I'm just taking a wild guess.

I prefer you use launcher pro. I'm using it as well. Clean and fast.

I'm running the Liquid Jellybean Rom, and I have an issue where whenever I play a video it will overlap everythng else around it. Is there a workaround to this?
Do you mean that the video sits over all the controls? If that's the case and are running a custom rom, go into the developer options and check the disable hw overlay. That should fix your problem. Or at least it did for me

Thank you so very much, that did the trick.
If I may, what does the HW overlay do?
If I read the info right, the hardware overlay is a secondary processing method that makes sure that there aren't any graphical collisions with displayed data. By disabling it, it forces the OS to continuously check to make sure there isn't any memory collisions. The downfall is, by disabling hw overlay it forces the CPU to perform double duty slowing the phone down and consuming additional battery power (not when the phone is idle because nothing is displayed)
Thankfully, we have great hardware and awesome devs where disabling doesn't noticeably impact our phone, but just imagine how much faster it could be if the hw overlay was properly utilized.
Lastly, any time you reboot your phone, you'll have to recheck the box.

Thank you!

old thread but shows you did search's so heres answer
disabling hw overlays does not stick after a reboot, there is an app in the market that forces it to stay but i forget what it is, maybe someone else can chime in with that, until then just disable hw overlays and dont reboot

The app Jamie's talking about are tasker and secure settings both are paid apps but worth it. With these apps one of the things you can do is disable hw overlays on boot very handy. I use this combo on every ROM I'm on.

I was hoping for a set it and forget it type of app instead of something that runs in the background. Is there a build.prop tweak for this?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
I wanna say yes and no I remember there was some line you could change in the build prop that would help with flickers in the ICS and early jb days. I think it was maxcomp or something like that and you change it from a three or two or vice versa if I also remember correctly it did something to your screen as well. But I'm not a hundred so research first or maybe some one can shed more light on this.

So I've been playing around with android tuner recently and I've been wondering if all the one click clean and one click optimization options in the app actually do anything. My guess was that it is sorta like wiping cache from recovery but Idk...
Are they just a gimmick? If they actually do something how often should i run them?

For that slight lag we get especially going into the app drawer I figured I try switching to Art instead of Dalvik and BAM lag was gone and feels much snapper for sure.
I do think it made my G3 snapper, but over time it just created more issues than it solved. I recently started using Nova Launcher Prime again and it's definitely faster than the stock one. That's a good enough bump in speed for me for now.
I did this about 4 days after owning the device, and since then, its been nothing but positives for me. It also seems as if it REALLY boosts battery life (almost doubled mine)
I switched about 2 weeks ago and honestly I cant tell any difference. I am using Apex Launcher
What lag ?
Sent from my LGLS990 using Tapatalk
Just switched to art myself yesterday... The lag is nonexistence now which is awesome, but is there a way to make some of the app compatible? (I searched but came up with, nothing) sorry for the stupid question
The lag exist just a few secs in the app drawer when you flip through the 1st or 2nd page. To another post you don't notice lag if you use a launcher. I personally like to use the stock launcher.
Finally making the switch to ART today. So far, so good. I will edit if I encounter issues.

settings > about phone > software information > and keep tapping build number until it says developer options unlocked. It'll be under a separate tab for developer options and go in there and enable art
Tried ART on 2 separate occasions for roughly a week. Both times, I had random freezes or reboots every day or 2. None of these issues on Dalvik.
Using Nova Launcher and that minimizes apparent lag for me.
Turning off all animations helps.

ART has been nothing but positive for me even with Note 2. Only drawbacks some apps don't work and cannot use xposed. Oh well would rather have a snappier phone with better battery life.
Every so often certain parts of my sprint g3 lags out and become unresponsive for a few seconds. Anyone experienced this before?
Sent from my LGLS990 using XDA Free mobile app
I notice this when installing apps, especially side-loaded apps where the install button is at the bottom. Sometimes it won't do anything for a couple seconds.
I hate to be the guy who claims his device runs perfect, and I am only a week in- but it does run perfect. Smoother than my note 3.
Two suggestions are typically given when this issue comes up- 1: change runtime from davlik to art. 2: disable thermal throttling using a ## code on the dialer screen.

Yeah i have to say mine is still smooth as hell and im on dalvik and have made no changes to the thermal daemons the only thing i have changed is im running nova launcher instead of stock.

Well, that reminds me- I suppose I should mention that I run Google experience launcher. So maybe the stock launcher is the issue...
Also, don't forget, enabling developer options and setting animations to .5 for all.
