[Q] Share notifications via wifi direct? - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi all,
I am looking for an app like TabTalk or Tablet Notifier that works via wifi-direct. My bluetooth connection seems kind of buggy, and drops more than occasionally. I'd love to see a fix for that, but haven't been able to figure that out. Short of that, is there something similar that works via wifi-direct?
Thanks,
NJ

macbook pro osx bluetooth tethering on VZW

I just got my Touch Pro yesterday. When I ordered it I went ahead and added tethering. With my 6800/Titan/Mogul, I was able to tether via bluetooth no problem with a custom ROM that added "internet sharing".
The only way to tether via bluetooth on the Touch Pro stock ROM is via "Modem Link". I got it working fine on Vista. But my work laptop I commute an hour to work each way, is the MacBook Pro.
I absolutely do not want to use a USB cord as there is not much room when you have someone sitting next to you. So I want to be able to connect, and put the phone back in my pocket.
I've searched hi and low for a solution, but can't find anything useful that actually works.
Any suggestions/step by step walk through on a working solution would be much appreciated!!
Thanks!
go->utilities->bluetooth->add new device->phone....should be self explanatory from there.

No, this does not work. It only holds the connection for 5 to 15 seconds before it fails. It worked great with my Mogul, but I've looked everywhere and can't get it to work with my TP!
yeah same here. i've gotten it to connect a couple times, but then it's only for a for about 5-10 seconds and then disconnects. I just ordered a bluetooth dongle that works with mac osx just to be sure it's not the internal bluetooth on the mac. I could be wrong, but I think the reason it's not stable as my previous phone is because connecting via "internet sharing" created a PAN vs. DUN. On my MacBook Pro it would say "join network on <phone name>" and it would work perfect. Using "modem link" I think is just using the DUN profile. Maybe JETware will expose PAN profile and more profiles? I want to try it, but it looks like it's old software.
well no luck with the bluetooth dongle ordered for the mac as there is no software to install that came with it. plugged it in and the os x bluetooth used the dongle instead of the built in bluetooth hardware. that was the only difference.
But again, I don't think it has anything to do with the Mac. I believe it's just the lack of the PAN profile on the phone. DUN profile works fine on the PC, but sucks on the MAC. At least with Verizon and/or the Touch Pro.
I think I'll remove the tethering package until a custom ROM comes out that enables the PAN profile. Hopefully someone can unlock GPS too. Other than VZW locking down those 2 things, I think the phone is great!

"WMWifiRouter instantly turns your wifi enabled smartphone* into a wireless internet hotspot. Now you can use your laptop and any other device with wifi to get online and surf, email, instant message, and anything else you normally use the internet for"
Internet Sharing App: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=321393
WOW! Thank you! http://www.wmwifirouter.com Works great. It took a little time to troubleshoot at first. But it's always those quick simple solutions that getcha. I just had to disable the power saving feature. But definitely a cool program worth shelling out $30 for. I had no idea that bluetooth limits bandwidth so much. Through WiFi I'm getting 2,418 kbps down and 516 kbps up. I think with bluetooth I was only able to get like 200-400 kbps down. I also had no idea pocket pc's were capable of acting like a router.
Thanks again. This seems to be the best solution for tethering VZW Touch Pro with a MacBook Pro.
By the way, I also tried the Interent Sharing app. Although it puts the program on your phone, it doesn't enable the PAN profile on the phone. So I'm guessing Verizon's a little smarter than just letting a simple app unlock it. I'm assuming a custom ROM in the future will unlock the PAN profile. Even if it does become unlocked, sharing through WiFi is so much faster that it's not even worth it going through bluetooth.

[Q] Wifi hotspot.

Hi,
Does anyone know if the SGS2 lets you set up a wifi hotspot, like you can on stock android? I know this is probably disabled on on-contract phones, but I'm planning to buy one SIM-free.
Cheers
It does. Was using it sat out in the sun on College Green today
I was using it in the early hours of this morning, it's great
I was surprised that it allowed me to hotspot. I rooted the thing in anticipation of that feature not working. I don't know much about rooting so I fumbled through it. I think the developers need to do a special modification to enable that service if it's disabled. Anyway, it looks enabled out of the box. But I thought the providers were the ones that disable it
Does anyone know how the providers usually handle the allowing of hotspot? Do they disable it down the road sometimes? Or if it works now it will work long term.
Looks like the word is not to use any addon wifi tether for the SII and to just to use the stock hotspot function that comes with the phone.
I tried it and it worked with my laptop. However, while my laptop is connected, if I try to connect to the hotspot with a Blackberry or Nokia phone the laptop loses its connection. After that the laptop can't connect.
Is anyone else having this problem?

[Q] reverse tethering with wireless hotspot functionality?

I have an HTC Legend that I don't use anymore, an SGS+ and an Acer A501. All three are rooted and have CM9. I don't get wireless in a certain part of the house, and I was wondering if I could transform the Legend in a wireless repeater of sorts. Now, I think that's really possible just by connecting via wireless to the main network and then just running as a wireless hotspot, but I can't really place it somewhere decent enough to repeat my signal (it's complicated).
So, trying to get my tablet's wifi to connect to the computer's LAN via the HTC cell phone, I tried all last night with all sorts of variations, ending up with an app called Reverse Tether, which connects to the computer's internet via USB, and another called Foxfi / PDANet Tablet, which communicates (poorly) via bluetooth. The problem seems to be that most wireless tethers expect 3g/4g to be connected and don't work with anything else.
Now, is there a solution to my little conundrum? Am I doing something horribly wrong or is there no "app for that"?
Thanks!
I posted the exact same question a few days ago and have gotten an interesting response. Start looking for a bridge connection app!
Sent from my SGH-T959V using XDA

[Q] share android lan connection over wifi

Hi folks, I hope someone can offer some words of advice.
I would like to be able to share my ethernet internet connection on my android 2.2 tablet via wifi.
I know there are various app's on phones that allow you to share your 3g connection but I have not found anything that I can actually install that will create the same sort of functionality on my tablet, most of the ones I've seen on the play store are simple short cuts giving control over the pre-existing wifi hotspot app.
What I need is the wifi hotspot itself, ie the ability to use my tablet as a router/bridge.
So any thoughts people?
Bump
Really, no comments at all, nobody?
Someone must have thought of this before me, if not does anyone know where I can find an actual wifi hotspot app not just a set of controls for the pre-installed hotspot?
Thanks
Jon
If you're talking about what I think you are, I've yet to find a way to broadcast your ethernet connection with your Wi-Fi Hotspot like a router. If there's a way to do it I'd be interested, but somehow I don't think there's a way to do it!
Beginning to think your right Wolfy. To be honest not that surprised there is no ready made to ethernet to wifi app but I thought I'd be able to find a traditional wifi hotspot that I can install on my tablet just for the sake of having a go & seeing if it works.
Amazed that there haven't been any other responses! Where are the regulars?

[Q] Bluetooth Internet sharing as a client not working.

Hi,
I've notice that when installing cyanogenmod 9, the tablet see itself as a phone and not a tablet. Even the most recent also include the cellphone signal icon as no service even on a wifi only tablet.
The reason why I raise this up is that it cause some problem in how internet sharing is managed.
I'm trying to use my cell phone internet on my tablet via bluetooth. When trying to connect via bluetooth my cell phone and my tablet so I can share my Cell phone internet on my tablet, they both only show the option to share internet...
Internet sharing via bluetooth is really amazing on battery life of both device ! I can last days on standby with just basic email notification...
Anyone have a solution to this ?
Thanks

I can confirm that this issue is present on the stock ICS rom (XXLQ8).
I can pair my tablet and phone, however, I cannot tether to the phone via bluetooth.
