There's an app called "Phone Info" that will let you do it but it hasn't been on the play store in some time (you'd have to hunt around to find an APK online).
There's another called "4G Switch" which is $0.99 on the play store which several people have noted works on the S4. Looks like it's essentially the same app as Phone Info, with a few changes.
I haven't used either so can't comment on their functionality but worst case you could drop a buck and if the paid app doesn't work, just refund it.
Think you can enable some scripts by Terminal in certain ROMs like Hyperdrive

I have a macbook pro as well and its not all that different from a standard PC as far as rooting goes. I have a feeling root access is the best we are going to have for a while...and thats being overly optimistic haha.

When I click OK, though, it just takes me to a list of applications, with no further guidance about which app it is. Anyone know what this is, what it means, and how to rectify it?

Is rooting the device the only way to get rid of this? Is there a way without root to disable this?
if you are with sprint, if you read the Sprint TOS that you signed when you got the phone it says that rooting will not void your warranty they just ask that u put it back to stock when upgrading or having service done to it. Who has ever went to upgrade their phone and the rep put it in to download mode to check something like that? And when I had my s2 rooted and needed service on the ear piece I just left cm 10 and all my stuff just the way it was and they never said anything to me about it.

I forgot to move my rooted tether app from my home screen and took it for service. The rep looked down, looked up at me, and went to a different screen to work from. Classic.
yeah, when I went to Sprint to have my last phone looked at, the rep asked me point blank if the phone was rooted -- but it was not in an accusatory way, it was more a "I need to know for the purposes of what I'm doing." Did not get the sense from the way she asked that it would have made a bit of difference to her in terms of whether they would still work on the phone.
As an aside, does anyone know what exactly could be causing the alert? It popped up when I was logged onto an airport wifi network, which gives me some concern.

It is a known issue, not by Lookout, but Knox AND a fix is coming from Sprint. Many threads to be found.

Not just you. A lot of folks think it's Lookout. Just letting you know the info is out there.
I have a tough time getting reasonable search results on the forum, but that's just me. I do search anyway, every time.
I purchased GTA San Andreas, ended up not liking it (controls too awkward + have PC version), so I refunded it. I was actually out of the 15 minute refund window but I went to the Google Play store and did the "report a problem" flow, and was issued said refund.

On a serious note why would you not want root? Only reasons I can think of is if you use Knox or for warranty. Most places will honor warranty with tripped Knox. I've returned devices with tripped Knox. ROOT=FREEDOM and not being able to write to extSD sucks a lot.

Believe me I know the benefits. I want them. But I'm still babysitting this phone. I don't want to root yet because of the warranty. I'm also on the jump program. I plan on switching to the S5 prime. I might use the towel root and unless the SD card fix which is seriously needed.

I just jumped to the S5 because my Note 3 (unfortunately) got water in it and I wanted to try something different. My Note 3 was rooted and I was even talking to the salesperson about it. He said they didn't care because they completely wipe the phone when it goes back or something of that nature.
Sigh, I miss my native unrestricted tethering...
In relation to this thread, the SDFix app is a beautiful thing. I was so upset that I couldn't backup my apps to my ext sd in Titanium. After I ran this app, it worked perfectly.

Ya it took MW a while to find this fix I love that I run it once and delete it after and I'm done
UPDATE after a full wipe and install of OS I retained ability to write to SD so it is a one time fix for ever☺?
PS: custom Roms have native tethering. I reccomend XtresoLite its found in the international android page and Ktoonsez Kernel for easy profiles and awesome fast charge support! Enjoy your new phone and BTW I fully submerged my s5 in the ocean no prob lol but I won't be again I just had to try.

Yeap, yeap, I'm rocking the Omega Rom right now and the tethering is back! It only took me 2 days to find this ROM, lol. I've also heard great thing about Ktoonsez, but I'm a wimpy stock guy. I try to keep everything as close to original as possible (except for tethering, of course!).

This has been written into the ROMs here practically since the day after the S5 was first released. Look back at the very first ROMs posted and you will see this fix was being incorporated by all the developers here and on the International site. Just an FYI.

I rooted in the past because I wanted more functionality, nicer screens, and to get rid of bloat wear. The S5 provides for most of that so there is no need to go through the root process. Its fun to play with ROMs but only for about a month or so. I don't use the IPhone because Apple wants to be my new BFF. Not rooting, at least with the S5, is just not needed for my level of use.

I used jump with a knox tripped phone and it didnt matter. I am not using jump any more though its not worth it . I can sell my device for more than what jump is gonna cover . I used to think it was a good deal until i found out half your device needs to be paid off before jumping. In reality jump is just another way for them to get $2 more out of ya a month. If you jump to a new device and you only have $300 left to pay on it then you are actually losing money. $2 a month extra(if you have insurance) a month. Plus any money you get if you sell your phone for more than $300 which is pretty easy to do if you have a S5. If im missing something let me know but i crunched the numbers and i see no benefit with jump. Also Posting on XDA should be outlawed if you are not rooted .. What a shame a GS5 without Root sounds as boring as a CrApple Iphone

Why dont you just create a backup in recovery? I never had very much luck restoring apps when switching to a different Rom. And if you dont switch Roms the only thing i found titainum good for is to freeze or uninstall system apps .. I guess if you need a backup off your apps for other reasons then go for it but using a custom recovery to perform a data backup is an option i prefer
