brother's Sony Xperia Z2 water screen and display damage - Xperia Z2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

a few months back my brother bought a sony xperia z2.. he was very happy. after a few days and ONE test if it was waterproof there was water in the camera and inside the phone. he went to the phone store and asked for help.. the phone was sent to 'what the store owner said was sony' after 5 weeks of waiting he got it back. one week later he took the phone out of his pocket with the screen against his leg and the back of the phone facing away from his leg. i was with him the hole day.. he didnt bump his legg what so ever
here was something we didn't get... on top of the screen, where the screen meets the edge there was crack that led until an inch under the upper egde of his phone.. i myself had a crack in my screen once but the phone still worked... in this case it was different.. the phone wouldn't work.. you could still switch on off but the display wasn't working.. he went back to the phone store once again but the owner of the store was clearly making up story's and said he would make a few calls. he didn't ..
can someone give my brother some tips on how to handle this sort of things and or how to get a new phone from son or something because we are really out of idea's
kind regards,
albert

X10 Phone/Parts available

Sadly my X10 has come to an end. Its been one of the best things I've owned over the past 6 months. But its current state has just made me give up on it
From what was a tiny small crack in the screen has now ended in me getting rid of the phone.
I replaced the digitizer but when doing so scraped off the doublesided glue, so waited another 3 weeks for that to come from overseas.
After finally arriving and damaged the LCD putting it back together. So waited more weeks for that to come. The new LCD is good, I boot the phone to notice the screen goes from 256k colours (looked ****) to normal - almost every time I touch the screen. I investigate to find the replacement digitizers ribbon cable which is attached to the glass has come off. Im putting it down to being faulty as so much care and love was put into putting it back togeather. Im not going to bother ordering a new one.
The last 3 months I've been without it, so its time to move on. Funny enough my girlfriend who hated her x10 since day one (yes we had matching x10's) was given an iphone so I'm taking hers.
As I speak, it sits in front of me in bits and I am seriously over trying to fix it. Its black too.
Dont let your child die
I was thinking of giving it one last go, but I woke up thinking the digitizer cable being broken wouldnt have been causing the bad screen colour. That would have to be LCD related..
So its definately all over with now!
buy a superamoled display from the SGS
oh man, its awful to hear that.
all parts are available if anyones interested
Helo.Sorry for my english but i want to ask, you have all the parts off the phone? My x10 usb is broken and i cant recharge. The motherboard is that im interested.Do you sell it?
Hello.
I wanted to know if you have some spare parts from X10 (Ear Piece Speaker Flex Cable and Keypad Button Flex Cable).
Thank you.
im really interested about the motherboard, you still got it?
Is your phone still up for grabs? Please PM me.
Regards
K
hey.
hey fellow brent I hope everything goes ok with your x10.

[Q] How serious is the 'cracking' issue?

I am very keen on the Z2 as my first Sony phone but the reports I have read about Z1 phone screens randomly cracking on their own has me worried. How serious is this problem really?
Is this just the 0.1% of phones that the people are complaining about? Or is it more than that. I am assuming the screen used on the Z2 is the same as predecessors.
Screen on the Z2 is not the same as one on the Z1, and personally i think that cracking screen problem is weird, and i not believe it.

I know the technology behind the glass is different, but are you sure the glass itself is different?
9 page thread about the issue on Sony forums [cannot post links yet ]
You should really not worry about that "cracking" problem.

hehe yeah shatter proof screen will crack without ANY reason!
no reason but maybe some a**h*** sit on phone and then report nothing happened for warranty and etc.
think little bit logical! is it possible that a slim glass crack by itself without any reason? NO
so dragontile glass also won't crack by itself!

There's been a scientifically proven discovery that connected cracking screen phenomenon to wearing a very tight pair of slim chino jeans...
Lol.....yeah, that'd be because.......
Tight fitting trousers + contour of wearers butt = phone being bent/twisted into shapes that Sony never intended = dumb s**t user damage.......
As far as I know, nobody has produced a flexible smartphone yet....lmao

I never gave any credit to those rumors... Until today when the screen of my Z2 just cracked on me.
Phone was in my pocket, I left home for a walk and when I pulled the phone out of my pocket the backglass was completely cracked... I am positive that I did not hit anything or did anything unusual. Pretty passed that it happened to me on a week old phone which I got from Taiwan so no possibility to return/exchange under warranty (I am in the US).

Ummmmm what about the lg flex???? Seriously tho, i wouldnt worry, i know its different glass but ive had a galaxy note for the last 2 years, lives in my back pocket, only damaged the screen once, damaged digitizer by throwing phone at wall, then broke lcd while attempting to remove the digitizer....... unless you're extremely heavy i doubt it'd be an issue

Phone was in left front pocket of a loose fitting jeans. This is where I always keep my phone, have gone without problem for years with iPhone, Xperia S, Nokia Lumia 900... never had a problem. Back of phone is always facing outside.
I tend to have the phone there and keep my hands in my pocket when i walk - only thing I can see is that my hand put a little pressure on the back glass and caused the cracking as I am positive I did not it anything and never keep anything else but the phone in that pocket. This still seems to me like a design problem because there is no "unnatural" pressure or wrong use here for a cellphone. Back glass just cracked all over, there is no clear breaking point that would indicate a shock, just cracks on the entire surface of the back glass.

Do any seasoned Sony phone owners have any comments to make about this? I'm a long time iPhone user looking to pre-order the Z2 and since reading about one alleged self cracked Z2 screen here and countless self-bending and self-cracking Z1 screens on other forums, I'm wondering if anyone else thinks this is cause for concern... Should we take these reports with a grain of salt ?

It's the same thing as always. It's the usual 0.1%.
So far only one person reported cracked Z2 here (but posted it twice, once here and once in other thread, but it's still one cracked Z2).
Every phone has such "issues", the louder the launch (and more anticipated), the more such problems emerge.
See literally EVERY single iPhone launch: cracking, scratching, bending, twisting etc. and I have yet to see in person a single defected (out of the box) iPhone. At least that's my personal experience.
It how Sony responds though which is the most concerning.
So far they've refused to acknowledge the problem and have denied warranty claims.
Whereas Apple will just straight out replace it.

Yes! It happened to me!
I bought the Z2 a week ago. Never let it drop, always kept it in my left pocket with nothing else.
This morning I woke up and it had this super clean crack all over the backside of the phone...
Called Sony, they said I had to go to the shop where I bought it.
Went to the shop, they said it was not yet acknowledged by Sony so they can't do anything about it.
I'm a Galaxy user that just switched to Sony.... mistake? I think so!

Well, I am based in Amsterdam. Here it's mostly cold but it was suddenly around 20 degrees (which is extremely hot for may in Amsterdam) when this crack happened. I know temperatures can affect glass, but with this small change in temperature...?

Cracked the glass, can I get a replacement?

So I had been considering getting a warranty replacement for my phone over the last few weeks. I have a 14w19 phone that's been having overheating issues with the camera and in general (wifi, GPS, 4g, etc...). I also have 1 dead pixel out of the box (which doesn't bother me but it's there).
The problem is I went mountain climbing, and while near the summit, a rescue helicopter came over and landed right next to me (to pick up an injured person). Fascinated, I started recording 4K video with my phone. Having never been this close to a flying helicopter, I was surprised by the force of the wind it made and how hard it blasted the small little rocks from the ground. With my body turned, I still recorded the event, and found out later that a rock had cracked the back glass of the phone. I can't feel it with my finger, barely with my fingernail, but I don't feel comfortable taking it under water (which is a real bummer).
Any idea if Sony would still replace it?

Where did you get your phone from, Sony would no doubt fix your device it's just they would probably charge you for it obviously.
If you got it by carrier explain this to them and they might fix it also but there should be a cost no matter where you got it from
??

Good to know. I don't mind paying for the repair or glass (it's not the Sony's fault I chase adventure and don't want a case). I'm in the USA and purchased the phone from Clove UK in May.
Please post question in the Q&A section

So the glass got significantly worse and I'm in need of repair. I'd prefer to send it in to Sony and not do it myself; does anyone have contact info for Sony USA department that would fix this? Also, any idea on turnaround time?

Glass being prone to crack?

I'm thinking about buying a Z5 Compact, but when reading about all the cases, where the glass on the front or the rear have cracked, on the Z1 Compact and Z3 Compact, I'm not so sure anymore.
What is the situation like with the Z5C vs Z3C/Z1C regarding the glass being prone to crack?
Thanks in advance.
David
I'm in the same situation myself.
However, I doubt we will be able to get feedback regarding this already. The "cracked glass" cases on the Z3C appeared IIRC only some time (months) after the release. Personally I plan to try to resist the urge to buy for 2-3 months and then check if there are any reports.

That's exactly what I said about my z3 compact for 9 months, feeling smugly sorry for all the people reporting cracked glass, until it cracked in my hand. On the other hand, that was the best reason to buy a z5 compact. Silly me.

It's been discussed in many other places and the consensus is that it doesn't have gorilla. Apparently, the producer for Sony tempered glass panels is unknown.

Bumping this up a bit..
Didnt want to open a new thread seeing as how this one is still here.
I'm on the edge of purchasing this phone but the spontaneous cracking glass issue and low durability of its predecessor (Z3C) are bugging me..
Was wondering if there are perhaps some more updated impressions regarding this.
Thanks.
I had z1c then z3c, my girlfriend, my sister and brother in law all still have the z3c.
All glass backs.
No cracks on any of these devices.
Other then when literally throwing the phone to ground by accident the front digitiser cracked (back was intact.)
Easy replacement as new chassis with inbuilt digi and screen was like £60 and very simple to replace the housing.
The spontaneous glass crack is hoopla if you take my consolidated multi user experience.
Don't let this phase your decision.
Also bear in mind the glass back plate believe it or not is the simplest thing to replace takes 2mins with a heatgun (again first hand experience.)

I'd be interested to hear more on the replacement procedure. Are there detailed instructions? If it isnt majorly expensive then it's not THAT big of a deal.
I see many cases on the market but no one ever actually tests the case to see how effective it is. Who is willing to drop their phone several times and see if their case works I remember seeing a review of iphone bumpers where they actually did drop several phones and only the really thick ones (like 0.5cm wide) actually protected the phone. Glass typically breaks from an edge hit. Does the glass go all the way to the edge, or is there a border around it? What is the boarder made of and how much energy can it really absorb. Now intuitively, I'd assume that the "compact" phone would be more resilient to cracks due to its size.
My last phone, I had a protector, but my current phone doesnt have one. I've never broken a screen, though I've cracked the casing. Both were gorilla glass. But I have no idea if that is just dumb luck.
I had a Z3, in a high quality case, the back cracked by itself. I was having issues with the speaker being quiet but was told the warranty was void due to the hairline crack in the back. Then a while later I dropped it but I caught it on my foot before it hit the ground so it was a very minor fall, but it was enough to crack the screen, a very thin hairline crack but still a crack, this stopped the screen from working so I was stuck without a phone. I got it replaced, and the back while I was at it, cost me $300 (AUD) to fix. The day I got the phone back, I was sat down at a table, wrote a message to my wife put the phone back in my jacket pocket, she text back so I pulled the phone out to check the message and there was a big crack across the screen. I did not drop it at all! Again the screen would not work. I didnt want to pay another $300 to fix the phone as they said the crack was due to stress (bull), so I bought a s6 galaxy, even though my Z3 was only 4 months old! Because the screen would not work with the crack in it, I could not get any of my data off the phone, when I plugged it into the PC I needed to unlock the phone but couldn't because the screen did not work, was very frustrated! Never buying a Sony again until they can confirm they have fixed this issue. The phone was too thin and flexed easily, my galaxy is thin but feels much more solid.
I have had a Z5C for a couple of months now. I spend a lot of time outdoors and am generally a bit rough with tech. I have dropped my phone from about a metre up a couple of times by accident already - knocked off tables etc. and have not suffered any ill effects yet.
Have dropped my phone SEVERAL times but still, screen takes it like a champ. Really durable phone if you ask me
I'm gentle with my phones, and even had a gel case on mine and yet the back seems to have cracked somehow without even a drop. The worst part is that I imported mine (don't sell them in Canada), so I can't get it fixed. I bought a skin from dbrand instead, and you can't even tell it's shattered any more.
Another user of z3c here , i can also confirm the glass problem is definitely a problem with z3c , dropped from 2 feet and back glass shattered , then drop from car seat on to the drive and cracked front from corner to corner disabling digitizer so now im using my phone with an otg mouse.
Im in the market for a new phone, but there is nothing except the z5c with a top spec that isn't stupidly big 5" + , i just tried a 5" asus phone very nice but just far too big for a phone, its not meant to be a bloody computer , its a phone, cant wait until they start becoming a bit more realistic again.
So i have looked at z5 , but i see exactly the same thread on the sony forums that was going for months if not years regarding z3 screen , and sony are still not taking responsibility and it looks like the design is still the same for z5c , such a shame as the phone is perfect in every way other than this defect (and some of the crap software add ons, but that's manageable)
Any other recommendations ?, it seems like i will be forced to buy an older gen phone , or a low end thing like moto E , why the hell did they make motog screen bigger after the first edition , ruined it as that was almost perfect too. I am considering a wileyfox , im just hoping some of these 5" ers have a minimal bezzal around the screen , the asus had a pretty big one it looked a like a plate , and that was their smallest one - how things have changed since the 8210 - at least i will save money if i buy a lower spec phone, but i'm a tech enthusiast and i want the best always have, they are turning away my money , there is nothing usable worth buying .
Back to the original topic , z5c , i just cant risk the money on it if it has such a fundamental floor , its an expensive phone compared to most other 4.5,6,7,8" phones that are usually around 100-150 , money isnt really the object though for the right phone i would pay. I have never had a phone screen crack before , and my z3 sees less action than any of my others as i work from home now and spend a lot more time in the house with my baby daughter, the htc phones are good , i lost count of the amount of times i dropped my desire HD hard , and when it was replaced by moto g it go even more brutal treatment as a second phone i kicked it down the road pissed and threw it against the wall several times, dropped down stairs and out of my pocket while riding a bike quickly , marks to the metal body but the screen was indestructible , i managed to break the moto g screen but i had fixed as i convinced them it was ridiculous that it broke failing off a sofa onto carpet but my replacement was fine , i had a painful time trying to do the same with sony though and with the endless complaints online, its obviously an inherent fault , im just appalled the z5c hasn't changed this.
This maybe a slightly unfocused rant , but i'm sure there are others that share my view , big spenders in the mobile sector have just been abandoned , someone needs to fill the gap in the market.
My partner also has the same issue , but is currently using a one mini 2 , which is very nice , but now slightly dated and HTC only went and cancelled all the updates , it didn't even get lollipop , why , it was the best phone they did by miles, and on top of that , they cancelled the mini3 , ultimate face palm
Where do i go chinese market ?
the blackberry blackphone is 4.7" , but i fear this is **** as it uses blackbery os, and i believe it has the other showstopping problem that the asus has , in that the processors architecture makes it incompatible with many apps, such as the only that is critical to me , the banking app with barclays.
Such a struggle, am i off to the chinese market? , i have no ****ing clue.

I'm with you on the needing a small phone thing. I'd check out Samsung's lineup. a3, a5, s4 mini, alpha, s5 mini. There's something for almost everyone. I was curious if the z1c and z3c but they always had there drawbacks, z5c I took the shot and ain't liking it.
If you dot care about expandable memory or user replaceable batteries there's a few other options as well.
Sadly , i ****ing hate the ugly samsung software, but i did seriously look at the a series, whilst thinking wtf , how am i being forced to consider a low end phone when tech is my number one interest and about the only thing i warrant spending lots of money on, i will end up saving money at this rate - i am looking at the oneplus x now, as it seems to have a bit smaller outer dimensions , and still a decent spec but of course it's 5" too
trouble is i ran into this page recently https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon/processors/820 , and now i need to have that processor in my next phone.
I think i will grab a wiley swift for now, only £130 to get me by , and even £20 cash back from manufacturer now , its not high spec i know , but im desperate for something now, and no way am i giving these 'leading' manufacturers money to encourage the ridiculous types of phones they are churning out by the bucket now, they are ****ing house phones not something to carry around with you, i could imagine them wall mounted , but Gzus i see some people carrying these things and it looks like they are going into battle with the 'visionaries' .....

Id try a z5c if it was about 1/2 the price and i didnt have a z3c already, for now i might just fix myz3c and put it inside a cage , it will still be smaller than these 5" devices - what did you find wrong with it though ?
I've owned a Z1C and now a Z5C and never had cracking issues on either. Don't drop your phone, it won't crack. If you're prone to dropping your phone, always get a case, because it's stupid to risk that much money on being clumsy.

Please help! Water Damaged Xperia Z2!

Hey guys. I recently had to walk in the rain for about 30-40 minutes to my Dads work, and no I don't have a car at the moment. My phone had closed flaps and everything when I was walking. I had my rain jacket on but my phone was in my jacket's pocket. When I arrived at my dad's work I saw how wet my phone was, so i dried it off with a towel. First thing i tried was listening to music using my earphones, and it didn't work, so maybe i though it was my earphones. Then I tried to watch an MKBHD video (Yes, why not.) on youtube in landscape mode, but it didn't work, so I tried playing a tilt racing game, and my car didn't turn at all. So up to that point, i got stressed out. So I rebooted my phone, and first thing I noticed was that my Notitfication panel was Stock Marshmallow and not N themed anynmore. Then approx 7 seconds later, BOOM. Everything on screen went gone. Since it wasn't an amoled screen, i could still see that the backlight was still on, with slight darker areas around the bottom right corner. The touchscreen was still working. I was able to boot into the 'invisible recovery' (lol) and I could swipe and press and do everything, but still nothing on-screen was showing. The I looked at both of my cameras, and I could see on moth there was waterdroplets around the lenses. At that point, I got extremely stressed out, but i still ate pizza because i was hungry. (lol) So I putted in rice when i got home overnight. Still nothing happened. When rubbing the power button, i can feel water sliding out gently. I couldn't understand up to that point. "The Z2 is waterproof! Water damage was the last thing on my mind to happen to this phone!" Any solutions or tips from you guys? Thanks alot for any help!
And please don't comment that I'm a troll and i deserve it, because I'm not! Anyway, I just need help on this. Thanks!
Put it back in rice and leave for a lot longer on a radiator. Leave flaps open. Whenever phones act up after being in contact with water you gotta power that thing off. I know to late but keep drying that phone off. Best you can do. I had some say they did it for week. This worries me for my phone. But the phone really isn't that waterproof. This flaps can fail with just a little dust trapped in them..

Hej as I wrote in PM to Brandon, last year I send my phone to service couple of months old z2 for faulty pixels and themselves replaced casing, flaps, and also some parts of screen. They only commented that casing with flaps was faulty. Precaution with water... Then saying that I submerged it in swimming pool for coupe of minutes and shot a great video, phone still works.
