[Q] OTA Upgrade to 4.4.4 while maintaining Root? - Xperia Tablet Z Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello folks,
I gotta a question for the experts here. I have the SGP321 rooted and running 4.4.2, now if I do an OTA update to 4.4.4 will I lose my root or not?
I appreciate your help

It reboot without installing anything on my sgp311, I think I'll have to flash full rom via flashtool

50/50 it'll install normally or reboot without installing.

If I understand correctly, if it installs correctly that means I keep root and if it reboots without installing, well means I have to go through the flash procedure I guess.

yes. If it reboots you have to flash manually via flashtool or pc-companion.

Actually this is what happened, so I have to flash manually although it is a pain in the ass procedure to maintain root.
Thanks

it's easier to root it again after install, than to maintain root.

I had no problem updating with the OTA, using SuperSU installed as system-app.
When it finished updating it was still rooted.

Second that. OTA update from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 with SuperSU as system app kept root on my 311.

For some strange reason, the recovery interferes the installation via OTA as it interupts the update and trigger the recovery boot sequence thus halts the update. What I did, I reflashed the old firmware (4.4.2) then proceed with the OTA update. Then flashed the kernel of the .230 have it rooted. After that, flashed the .283 kernel. Install the recovery. Now enjoying the 4.4.4 update rooted with recovery.
If you're wondering why I didn't flash the 4.4.4 firmware directly, the file is so large (1GB) and the access to the download sites is pain in the a**.

I have an SGP321 and just did the OTA upgrade. Everything went smoothly and I kept root.

Never been able to OTA update any of my rooted xperias (T,Z,Z1 or Tablet Z), even if SuperSU is installed as system app and "survive" mode is checked.
Wonder what I did wrong...

no matter how you update, you will lose ROOT access.
It is still possible to get root back after updating, but does require a lot of work arounds to do it.

No,this is not true. If you install Voodoo OTA RootKeeper and do an OTA update, you can keep root. I tested it myself ...

Some thing I notes with update .257 that if you did OTA update the update will not delete the root or the busybox.

Try to find, download and install the Sony Mobile Update Service program. Maybe here: http://www.sonymobile.com/gb/tools/update-service/

My pleasure. I had the same problem as you and that's the only thing that worked for me too.
Can I also use SUS if I have an unlocked bootloader and root and I want to go back to stock and locked bootloader? :silly:

[SGP611] [23.4.A.1.264] Apply without loosing root

Hello
I have a SGP611 with a rooted 23.4.A.1.232 build. I saw the 264 update is only 7.5Mb and thought it may be an incremental update.
Has someone tried to install official update on a rooted firmware ? Did you loose root ?
Thanks for any feedback

You will loose root, but if you have rooted firmware you can make flashable rooted zip to install on dualrecovery without wipe. hope this should work and you'll get update and root

Should I update?

Hi guys, first I want to apology if it has already been asked.
I'm running Android 6.0 (32.1.A.1.185) on my E5823. My phone is rooted and have Xposed installed (Hi Niantic)
I can't get rid of the notification for 32.2.A.0.224.
Should I update?
Will I loose root and Xposed? If so, how can I get rid of this annoying update notification?
Thanks a lot
You won't be able to update the official way without getting rid of the mods/root.

Okay thanks. How am I supposed to update then?
Can I remove this annoying persistent notification?

Uninstall Xposed framework and then you'll need to flash stock kernel using fastboot which would also remove whatever custom recovery and root you have.

Thanks. I'll do it for 7.0 I think
Hey, I was asking myself: if I install systemless root (Magisk), will I be able to OTA? (if Magisk is compatible with my phone, which I'm not totally sure)
Thanks

I wouldn't recommend it. Even if you do succeed in updating you could end up with a bricked device or just mess up your firmware and would have to do redo everything. Best is to bring it back to complete stock and then do the update.

Okay, thanks for the reply
I don't really see the problem. Just flash the latest firmware using Flashtool and then root again by using the rootkernel mod in this forum. Xposed and such aren't a problem either.
Hi
Is it possible to use Flashtool with twrp/root/xposed? Btw I think my bootloader is still unlocked.
And what should I use to root? Something like this or this?

If your bootloader is unlocked you should be able to follow both tutorials just fine.
In short:
Flash new firmware using Flashtool
Patch kernel of new firmware and flash it
Flash SuperSU and Xposed using TWRP
Enjoy life
If you need step-for-step help, just send me a PM with your instant messasing contact details. I'll help where needed.
Hi, thanks for the reply, I'll do that when I'll have more free time.
Instead of SuperSU, can I flash Magisk?
Bump
Thanks

You'll first need to downgrade to an older firmware in order to backup the TA partition. This thread describes everything very detailed: http://forum.xda-developers.com/z5-compact/general/how-to-backup-restore-ta-partition-root-t3479532

In my case MM 6.0.1 (.224 or .253) solved the battery drain issue during night/sleep, so i would highly recommend it. There is also a discussion regarding this.
as suggested by others, i would not directly OTA upgrade with modded kernel, Supersu and Xposed installed. I would do it with flashtool.
If you want to stick with the current version, simply disable/hide/remove the Software update app (or "hide all notifications from this app".)
I froze it a while ago with Rom Toolbox, but thanks

Hi, I'm still on 32.1.A.1.185
Flashtool (Emma) only allow me to install 32.0.A.6.200 (there is Customized MY and NOBA, don't know the difference) and 32.1.A.1.163 (only Customized_NOBA)
Why can't I update to a more recent firmware?
Thanks

Thank you, I've already encountered that problem
When flashing the stock recovery and successfully updating the firmware, will I loose root?
I've read somewhere that the bootloader will be locked again.

You will have to re-root yes.
BL should stay unlocked, although I have yet to update "normally" so I'm not sure. I only used HWOTA, and now HuRUpdater as it will let you keep twrp as well.
