I have a stock rom evo 4g LTE, rooted, with Android 4.0.3 on it.
I forget the root app I used, some one click thingy, I guess my bootloader is unlocked
because I get a boot menu every time I reboot, on that screen that says **TAMPERED**.
Anyway, I ignored the notification icon in my taskbar for OTA updates, for a very long time.
Since the day I bought it over a year ago.
Finally I decided "eh, screw it, why not." ...I'm sure I'll regret that.
I told it to do the OTA update, and it downloaded (I think??) and rebooted.
The icon went away. Seemed to be a done deal.
But once per day since then, my phone rings, and I see a prompt saying
there's an OTA update, and would I like to install it now?
I think it's the same OTA update being prompted repeatdly,
because the filesize is always the same (~42 megs).
What should I do? I can choose install, reboot, and be fine for the rest of the day,
or choose cancel, reboot, and be fine for the rest of the day.
Doesn't seem to matter. But would be nice to fix it for good.
Well, considering that you are about 4-5 OTAs behind the rest of the community, I would say that the notification is probably correct. HOWEVER, of you are not using the stock recovery, then the OTA did not flash. Yes, the phone rebooted, but that's because it is installed entirely through recovery, and the phone has to reboot to get into recovery mode in the first place.
Now, for the more important question at hand....why exactly are you still using ICS? Furthermore, if you are still using ICS, then why are you rooted? As far as I'm concerned, the OTAs are actually necessary updates for the phone. I'm sure that you will love Jelly Bean if you have never used it before.
And please, for the sake of us all who are cringing at the sight of the first sentence....PLEASE UPDATE your phone! If you have a good reason not to, please share.
Hi, thanks for the reply... Maybe they were all different updates after all.
I haven't been prompted to update again since my post.
Maybe I grabbed the 3 or 4 OTA updates that I needed to catch up on.
I do think I'd like Jelly Bean too, seeing some of the features is what prompted me to finally catch up.
Can you explain this part to me? I'm not familiar with this stuff.

When I see the white screen that says **TAMPERED** (looks basically like this screen)...
should I have chosen Recovery instead of the usual reboot option?
If I no longer see the notification, does that mean the updates worked? My Android version still shows 4.0.3.

Well, I had no compelling reason to upgrade. I still don't really, the phone does what I want,
I just saw some of the features in the next version and thought "huh, that sounds pretty cool".
I'm rooted for all the usual reasons... I want to be able to browse, copy, move, rename files (including system files)
without incident... use nandroid for backups... wifi tether (still can't get that to work actually)... install unapproved apps...
tweak the OS, and so on.
Ok, my friend...let me educate you. Instead of giving you the simplest, fastest solution, I will actually try to answer all of your questions, since you did ask.

To give a very superficial explanation of Jelly Bean, it is everything that ICS does, and more. It just does it smoother. It also brings Google Now, which was – and still is – the selling point of Jelly Bean. The Sense launcher got a few changes, too, but you will have to explore those changes on your own (mainly because I don’t remember them off hand, and this post is beginning to become lengthy).

If the first update didn’t update properly, then the phone is simply downloading and trying to install the same update over and over. When you boot back into Android after a successful update, you will be greeted by a welcome message congratulating you for installing the new version.
If you are rooted, odds are, you are using a custom recovery, such as TWRP or CWM. OTAs are only installed through the stock recovery & a locked bootloader. The stock recovery doesn’t make nandroids, or do anything of the sort. To install the stock recovery, go here:

The stock recovery is located somewhere within the zip file.

You can flash install the stock recovery by using fastboot commands from the bootloader (which is the screen that shows the TAMPERED status on the top), or you can use Flash Image GUI. It is a paid app on the Play Store, or you can get it from XDA (the dev let XDA users download it for free…Google it).
Lastly, there are a few things that I suggest that you do. First, obtain S-Off (Google, Google, Google...very simple), so you can install the new firmwares directly, instead of using OTAs. Otherwise, if you accept the OTA, you will lose root, and you will have to root your phone again and again. Installing the firmware, then the new rom is the same as accepting the OTA, then rooting.
Another alternative is to get S-Off, then accept the OTA (after installing the stock recovery). Your bootloader does not need to be locked, and there are recovery zips floating around here that can be installed through the bootloader (therefore, you will not be stuck rooting the phone the hard way, just boot into recovery and flash SuperSU). I highly suggest achieving S-Off.
If you want to jump straight to the latest version (Android 4.3, Sense 5.0) by installing the RUU located somewhere in this forum. I actually suggest that you try Sense 4 with Jelly Bean first, but that is completely up to you. Keep in mind that using the RUU will wipe your internal memory, so back up what needs to be backed up. This doesn’t require you to be rooted, and the state of the bootloader does not matter. It will lock the bootloader, load the stock recovery, and you will lose root. You won’t be able to downgrade without S-Off.
Other Notes:
When using the 4.3 RUU, make sure that Android USB Debugging is enabled.
Bookmarking for later but I wanted to say thanks for the thorough reply!
I can confirm the update never worked, because I never got the confirmation message
and I got prompted again a few hours after I posted.
Are you willing to answer just a few more things?
Based on what I've read, it sounds like this is what I ought to do:
- Back up anything I need to. Just to confirm, updating firmware and flashing a new rom wipes out everything in the phone's internal memory, but not external SDcard? Or both?
Are apps considered "on the cloud" and I can reinstall by just redownloading, without paying again?
Except sideloaded apps? Or will I need to find all those APK files and save them somewhere else?
Is it safe to say they're all in \data\app and \system\app? Or would system\app be unwanted since it's what came with the old phone OS?
- Get my phone into S-OFF status.
- Update firmware (this is a separate process from updating the rom? Where do I get this firmware? Google google google?)
- Install a new ROM (stock or otherwise) which will have these updates built in, so I won't need to regain root.
- Not sure what my bootloader is, maybe TWRP, does it matter? Do the above steps affect it? Should I change it to stock anyway?
- You suggested trying Sense 4 rather than Sense 5 first... any special reason?

As always, I'm open for questions. Not to sound egotistic, but I enjoy sharing my opinion.
Based on what I've read, it sounds like this is what I ought to do:
- Back up anything I need to. Just to confirm, updating firmware and flashing a new rom wipes out everything in the phone's internal memory, but not external SDcard? Or both?
Updating to the 4.3 firmware wipes your internal memory, not your sd card (although, that may be a very unfortunate circumstance, so it should be backed up as well). The other firmware updates do not affect your memory.
Are apps considered "on the cloud" and I can reinstall by just redownloading, without paying again?
Technically, yes they are "on the cloud." The fact that you paid is saved somewhere within your main Google account that you downloaded the app with. It is possible to pay for apps with your secondary gmail account, which can be switched within the Play Store app.
Except sideloaded apps? Or will I need to find all those APK files and save them somewhere else?
Use Titanium Backup if you can't find the apks. I do save my apks that I download, and I also upload them to Google Drive, since I have multiple Android devices, and I also have a faulty micro sd card that I am yet to replace. I can lose my data at any given moment, but everything is backed up, so I'm not worried.
Is it safe to say they're all in \data\app and \system\app? Or would system\app be unwanted since it's what came with the old phone OS?
Everything within the /system folder is wiped when you flash new roms. That data is NOT backed up while flashing between roms. Also, since it is from an older Android version, it's best to leave them alone. You may back up the data if you like, but I would refrain from restoring the apks along with the data.
The /data directory may be wiped, depending on the dev who built the rom zip. If they added the superwipe script, then /data will be wiped as well. Most devs do not include this, since many people "dirty flash," which is flashing new roms or updates of the current rom without wiping /data first.
- Get my phone into S-OFF status.
You will save yourself a LOT of headaches in the future. It was my S-Off status that allowed me to reflash my firmware when I lost the function of my data/voice antennas while carelessly flashing a port of a phone on a different carrier. Also, if you feel curious to try AOSP roms, then you do not need to do any extra steps to flash them.
- Update firmware (this is a separate process from updating the rom? Where do I get this firmware? Google google google?)
Yes, the firmware handles manages how the hardware of the phone operates. Updating the rom changes how the software looks and behaves. The kernel is sort of a bridge between the firmware and the software, since it manages the firmware (like battery life, processor speed, antennas, etc.), but the kernel is dependent on the software version. The firmware is not dependent on the software version, just as the software version is not dependent on the firmware version.
The only exception of the firmware/software independence is the 4.3 update, which requires a complete update of the firmware, and the older software cannot run on the new firmware without being modded by a dev.
- Install a new ROM (stock or otherwise) which will have these updates built in, so I won't need to regain root.
- Not sure what my bootloader is, maybe TWRP, does it matter? Do the above steps affect it? Should I change it to stock anyway?
Your bootloader is the white screen that shows the TAMPERED status on the top, and little Androids on skateboards on the bottom. With the exception of the firmware information in the top left corner, this screen does not change...ever.
TWRP is your recovery image, which is accessible through the RECOVERY option in your bootloader, or you can boot directly into it through different apps in Android - Titanium Backup is one of them (yes, that's one of the options, even for the free version).
The only reason to return your recovery to stock is to accept OTAs, and also to bring your phone back to the complete factory settings, just as the day when it was first purchased (for the sake of selling the phone, or returning back to Sprint for service}. Otherwise, don't bother with it. You may want to update your version of TWRP, though. If you update to 4.3, you will have to update it. I'm not going to take the time to get into that right now. I've given you enough homework.
- You suggested trying Sense 4 rather than Sense 5 first... any special reason?
I am a very patient person. To me, exploring Android takes time. I enjoy reading before I test, and testing before I settle (which I'm yet to "settle"). All of that being said, I suggested Sense 4 before Sense 5 because I wanted you to experience the both of them. They are truly two different versions of Sense, which one might not realize, as their version numbers are differentiated by one integer (in other words, 4 to 5). Sense 3 was a small step above Sense 2, and Sense 4 was a bigger step from Sense 3. Sense 5 is a complete overhaul of the Sense UI, save the flip clock.
I just feel that skipping from 4.0 to 4.3 is missing out on a great experience, but that is mainly if you actually want to try out different roms. Until the Sense 5 RUU, I still visiting ICS on occassion, but I usually didn't last more than 3 hours before I jumped back to JB.

Whew...you're making me work. But I like it. Anymore questions? Feel free to ask.
OK I've been working on this all afternoon and I'm at an impasse.
You've been a huge help so far and I hope you can guide me through this part.
I want to S-OFF and am following a tutorial: http://www.thefortressofnerditude.com/s-off-your-sprint-htc-evo-4g-lte/
Step 3 says root and install recovery. So I decide I need TWRP.
Already have nandroid and titanium backups both completed.
And I copied the whole SDcard to my computer after.
Annoyingly, TWRP's install page suggests that I need to be in S-OFF.
TWRP says I need S-OFF. S-OFF guide seems to suggest I need TWRP working.
I installed "TWRP Manager". Realize that might not be the same thing as TWRP.
Googled and found it on the TeamWin page.
The page asks first to input my device. I choose Evo 4G LTE (Jewel).
That brings me to this page: http://teamw.in/project/twrp2/98
They suggest I do the android app install method. I follow the first link (Market Link)
and install GooManager, and follow their steps.
Install the app and open it. Tap menu then hit Install OpenRecoveryScript. Tap Yes. Verify that the filename displays your device's code name and hit Yes. The file will download and your device will reboot and install the recovery automatically.
This all goes smoothly, but here's my issue.
It doesn't reboot automatically, or install anything automatically.
I see in the comments a recommendation to reboot into recovery mode.
I choose that in GooManager's menu, and after rebooting I get my bootloader screen with 4 menu options:
Bootloader
Reboot
Reboot Bootloader
Power Down
The only one that sounds sensible to me is bootloader so I pick that.
Now I get some new options:
Fastboot
Recovery
Factory Reset
Clear Storage
Simlock
Image CRC
Show Barcode
So, the only one that makes sense is Recovery. I choose it. The phone reboots.
Now I'm back at the first menu. So I'm in a loop.
Nothing I do in this loop seems to install anything.
So I just rebooted the phone normally and I'm back to my OS.
Where to go from here?

Did you unlock your boot loader first? You don't need to be S-off to install a custom recovery. Unlock your bootloader at htcdev.com then install twrp.
Read here for more info:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2420916
Also, I suggest learning how to use fastboot commands. Install twrp using fastboot.
Sent from my EVO using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
OK, so I'm semi-bricked but not panicking yet.
Here's where I'm at.
• Unlocked boot loader successfully
• Installed TWRP using fastboot.
• Followed instructions as closely as I could on moonshine.io to get S-OFF working.
Several times during the process I got "installing device driver software" in my win7 system tray.
Not sure if that's normal. But the drivers seemed to install fine. At first.
But then, during this part of the process:
Moonshining .................(1)
Windows prompted me that it was installing some drivers again, But it failed to install the MTP driver.
After ten tries with the "Moonshining" step, I got "ERROR: don't drink and moonshine!" or something like that.
So, it seems like I need to get this MTP driver going. First I tried solutions on the computer:
• Uninstalled all HTC software, unplugged phone, rebooted,
installed HTC Sync Manager (setup name setup_3.0.52.0_htc.exe), then uninstalled it...
because a tutorial said this would keep the drivers but remove the software. Still no luck on the MTP driver though.
• Found "Mass Storage Device" (my phone) under device manager, removed it, unplugged, rebooted, replugged.
• Plugged cord into back of PC, so I'm using USB 2.0 rather than USB 3.0.
• One suggestion said a certain registry section might have an upperfilter key that shouldn't be there.
But I don't have that upperfilter key so that's not the issue.
Some fixes require getting into my phone (one guy suggests turning off USB debugging)...
but I no longer have a working OS. I can get into my bootloader, I tried Factory Reset.
But after choosing this I go into TWRP and I have no TWRP backups that I can restore.
So my next guess is, I need to get a recovery ZIP (is that basically a ROM?) that TWRP can install.
If that's correct, what ZIP should I get? I was on Android 4.0.3 Sense 4.0, can I download jellybean with Sense 5.0,
and install it via TWRP?
That was my goal all along, but I'm determined to get S-OFF working, so if doing that means my phone gets wiped again,
I guess I just want whatever ROM/recovery/whatever that allows me to change this USB debugging setting,
and try other phone-related fixes to the MTP driver issue.
First of all, flash an ICS rom. I'm assuming that you are still using the same ICS firmware, and you will want to have your phone operational (to enable USB debugging). The link for MeanRom ICS still works. http://old.androidfilehost.com/main/EVO_3D_Developers/mikeyxda/LTEvo/MeanROM-ICS-v65-jewel-ltevo.zip
Ok....since you are on the old HBoot, I think that you need to use the older S-Off methods (LazyPanda or DirtyRacun), if I'm not mistaken. You can not download and flash Sense 5.0 through TWRP as of yet, because you need to be using the new firmware to do so. You may want to pay http://unlimited.io/jewel.htm a visit. Also, to use LazyPanda or DirtyRacun, you need to be using Ubuntu. Another option that you have is to use the regular RUU and update directly to Sense 5.0. You will be stock, unrooted, but you can easily use the latest S-Off method.
Lastly, for your rooting/S-Off needs, you can also use a handy-dandy toolkit from @WindyCityRockr that can handle everything that you need to do. I usually encourage manual labor, but there are some exceptions. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2436217
Thanks again for jumping in.
I'm getting somewhere, but still so many difficulties.
Fix one thing, break two more.
I finally have a new working rom, but almost against my will it ended up
being CyanogenMod.
The short version:
- unlocked bootloader, got TWRP going, finally got ADB working (don't think it's the right driver,
but whatever, ADB commands work fine), wiped everything... factory reset, Dalvik, external storage.
- Didn't wipe Internal storage, I wiped only /data/ per some post's recommendation.
- I used ADB PUSH to get a few possible roms onto /sdcard/
PJ75IMG_1.13.651.1.zip (failed with "unable to open zip")
(ROM)_Stock_Rooted_OTA_(3.16.651.3)V2.zip (failed with "unable to execute updater binary in zip")
cm-10.2.0-jewel.zip (cyanogenmod) - success!
So, the phone works. It appears to be at least based on android 4.3... and I'm guessing CM, which updates
frequently, has all those OTA updates bundled into it. Any downsides to CyanogenMod?
I could just proceed from here to reinstall my old apps etc.
I'm still not "S-OFF" which annoys me, but I read a post suggesting it's not really that necessary.
The way they put it is, s-off allows you to access partitions so they can be modded,
but nobody is developing anything interesting for those partitions. Like nobody's doing custom radios and such.
Should I still pursue S-OFF anyway?
If so, is there a way to do it with CyanogenMod?
That awesome app (Windroid Universal Toolkit) doesn't recognize the phone.
Last question, how should I go about restoring everything?
I had titanium and nandroid backups copied to my computer.
Can it restore to such a wildly different version of the OS?
Can I get back not just apps, but stuff like my keyboard preferences, texting history, etc.?

Yes! Being S-On is a complete pain in the BUTT when switching AOSP roms. Have you tried to flash the rom that I posted, MeanRom ICS? I'm really trying to get you to stay on Sense, because S-Off and other different tools work so much better while using Sense. AOSP is better after S-Off. But that's up to you.

Yes, TB will still work. There are some apps that might cause the restoration process to freeze, so I suggest killing TB and skipping over the app that froze the process when you return.

If your keyboard preferences was not backed up, then no. If you were using the stock Sense keyboard, then that is a no as well. As long as your texting history was backed up, it can be restored. Texts are not like apps...their data is typically stored in XML files which are readable through any version of Android (2.3+).
I'm still soliciting my help if you need it.
I'm for sure going to need it, so thanks very much for the ongoing support!
I got discouraged after all the failures but I'll download Meanrom now.
The thing is... now that Cyanogen mod works, I hesitate to wipe it and try a new one.
Especially since several other roms I tried mysteriously failed to install.
I like that it's jellybean and don't wanna move backwards to ICS.
And I like their goal of cutting out the fluff.
I still want S-OFF, will I end up having to wipe everything again to get it?
Also, I really don't feel confident I have the right drivers for my windows machine.
I can transfer files in USB mode, go into USB debugging, and do the usual ADB commands.
But the phone shows up as a nexus in device manager, but it's definitely evo 4G lte.
I tried installing an executable RUU and it failed after a bit saying it can't detect the device.
And there's that issue where Windroid doesn't detect it.
So I have the feeling that without the right USB drivers, tools like Moonshine will still fail.
I specifically got errors every time when anything tried to install MTP usb drivers. Do I really need them?
You think LazyPanda or DirtyRacun's tools will work even if I never get the MTP thing installed?

Of course that's what I thought hours ago when I tried moonshine haha.

To be clear, does this method wipe anything?

Can't remember if it wipes or not. Best thing to do is make a backup with TWRP and keep the backup on your external SD card. If it wipes you can always restore your backup.

Thanks for the help so far guys. I am currently really enjoying Cyanogenmod. I suspect it's eating battery more,
but then against I am on the phone for hours redoing everything that got changed/removed.
Does anyone know if there's a simple way (or even a difficult way) to restore my texts?
Because the app is totally different, and the old text app was the one that came
with the stock rom, I cannot restore it in titanium. But if I could extract even the raw text that'd be helpful.
Get back to Sense, or get someone with Sense to restore it for you, and save it using a different app. Or maybe try using SMS Backup & Restore from the Play Store. I'm not sure if it can read the backups saved through Sense, but it's worth a try. You just have to navigate to the location of the old backup.
It looks like I can import an XML in this messaging app so maybe if sense offers an export to XML option, I'll be set.
Sense is sort of an OS on top of the OS, right?
Can sense be loaded without flashing a new rom? or is it too integrated with the OS?
As the title states, I have an HDX 7 currently sitting with an older firmware and Safestrap 3.70 (TWRP v2.6.3.1).
I haven't touched anything on it since February 2014. My daughter has been using it primarily, but she finally got her own tablet, so I'm reclaiming this one.
Currently, I frequently get a blue screen followed by the tablet rebooting when attempting to watch YouTube videos via the app. Further, I have to uninstall all updates to Google Play for it function at all.
As I recall I also modified some system file to prevent Amazon OTA updates.
I'd like to get this device caught up in terms of current trends. If someone could direct me to my best options and perhaps a guide, I'd really appreciate it. Much of what I'm seeing is for later firmware versions.
Also, if there is a method to retain root and recover the extra storage used by Safestrap, that would be ideal.
Thanks in advance!

Given your firmware level:
- verify device is still rooted (use towelroot if needed)
- flash twrp recovery
- update bootloader to v3.2.3.2
- unlock bootloader (try 1-click method)
- flash rom of choice (Nexus, CM 11/12/13), SlimLP)
Search through the forums for relevant threads. Ask questions along the way. You have some work ahead (hours) but a nice reward at the other end.
Is there anything special I need to do to remove Safestrap? I forgot to mention I deleted all of the other rom backups on the device and moved the rooted rom to the default slot to free up space. Pretty sure I have the original rom backed up on my desktop. Do I need to revert before doing any of the above?

Thoughts:
- moving roms between slots (specifically stock) via backup/restore is generally a bad idea in Safestrap; consider yourself lucky if you used this technique
- if the rom in the stock slot (assuming FireOS 13.3.1.0) boots properly then you can safely remove Safestrap v3 via the uninstall option in the apk
- do not wipe anything in Safestrap nor execute a 'factory reset' from the native Kindle recovery menu (bad outcomes)
- keep WiFi off / airplane mode engaged unless you are 100% sure the OTA block is working
- snag a copy of Flashify to install twrp and the 3.2.3 bootloader update
- check MD5 checksums with ES File Explorer or another tool before flashing; especially important for bootloader update!
- backup your existing recovery with Flashify before flashing twrp; leave a copy on the device
- enable USB debugging in Kindle settings (optional but offers additional recovery options should something go wrong)
- flash twrp first and make sure it works (reboot to recovery; have a look around but don't change anything)
- reboot FireOS and then use Flashify to update bootloader. Did I mention you should check MD5?
Post when above tasks are complete or if you have questions. Cover bootloader unlock next. Be aware the above steps carry some risk including permanently bricking the device. Make sure you have a clear understand on what is suppose to happen; double/triple check everything before committing changes. Good luck.
So, I understand everything above other than uninstalling Safestrap via the .apk. Is this accomplished via the original apk I installed Safestrap with, or something separate. Also, will I lose root by uninstalling Safestrap?
Ignore the previous post. I've successfully uninstalled Safestrap and reinstalled TWRP. So far, I've attempted to update the bootloader via both TWRP and Flashify, but it's still showing 13.3.1.0 under the device information\system updates. Could this be due to whatever modification I made a couple years ago to prevent OTA updates?

- use the original apk to remove (uninstall) Safestrap v3 recovery; you do not need to uninstall the apk itself
- uninstalling Safestrap will not impact root

The FireOS version number will not change following bootloader update. It is a separate 'component' whose version can not be independently queried or verified. Typically the system (what you see, ie: FireOS) and bootloader are updated together and share the same version identifier. In this instance are only flashing the bookloader update as FireOS will soon be replaced by a different ROM. No need to update it and assume the associated risks.
Ahh, gotcha. Problem I'm having now is getting the bootloader unlocked. I downloaded the 1-click file, ran the batch file, and Virtual Box was installed. Once it finished installing it opened up and showed two instances of 1-click, but then nothing happens in either Virtual Box or the cmd window opened by the batch file. If I double click on either instance of 1-click, the last line says it's loading the kernel, but it stays that indefinitely. I attempted closing out Virtual Box multiple times, reran the batch file, all with the same results, sans the installation of course.

Hum. Best handled by @draxie who developed 1-click. Generally pretty responsive to forum posts. If 1-click doesn't do it can always try the manual approach (a LOT more involved but not risky). Let's see what shakes out.
This is what I'm getting from the batch cmd window:

Here is the method I used to block OTA updates.

I renamed otacerts.zip to otacerts.zip.old in /etc/security/
I also renamed com.amazon.dcp.apk to com.amazon.dcp.apk.old in /system/app/
Doing those prevent OTA updates from working and if you check for updates from the device, it says none are found (at least it has worked for me).

Do I need to undo this before proceeding with the bootloader update and unlocking?

No - tasks ahead have no dependence on Amazon's update engine.
10-4. I attempted to find the manual method for unlocking the bootloader with no success. Not sure if I'm looking in the wrong section of the forum, or just overlooking it.

I'm actually running Windows 7 64; not sure if that matters. Perhaps why 1-click isn't working?
I'm trying to get Minimal ADB and Fastboot to work, but while my HDX is being detected while booted into the OS or TWRP, it's not in Fastboot mode for whatever reason. I've cleared out the old ADB drivers and reloaded them after plugging the HDX into a USB while in Fastboot mode, and still nothing. It's not showing up under 'adb devices' or 'adb fasboot'.

Yup - that's the driver issue I referenced. Recommend waiting for response from 1-click developer before diving in. Win 7 x64 not an issue.

If you want to give manual unlocking a try:
- use these drivers; you likely need to reinstall when flipping between adb and fastboot
- detail procedure
- suggest browsing this thread for additional info/tips. Lots of noise but some diamonds in the rough too
- careful not to go down a rabbit hole; some solutions are one offs that worked great for the poster due to their familiarity with a particular too, platform or technique
- unlike almost everything else with HDX you can not harm your device with bootloader unlock attempts. It will either work or not with no adverse consequences either way
There are a few excellent posts by @Cl4ncy, @jerryl and others (possibly one of mine) in different threads; unfortunately I wasn't able to surface them in a quick search. Nature of the HDX forums. A gold mine if information that is a bxxtch to access.
Before diving in you may want to flash CM11 or Nexus v4 which can be done with a locked bootloader. Both are rock solid KitKat based roms that will expose the full capabilities of your device and offer continuity to CM13 once unlocked.
Good luck.
First off, I wanna extend a heartfelt thank you to @Davey126 for basically holding my hand through much of the process, and @EncryptedCurse for offering insight as well; folks like you are the reason I've been apart of this community for several years and always come to first when I'm looking for solutions revolving around Android products.
Secondly, I'd like to share a couple of my experiences as a novice that may have others in the future. For whatever reason, I couldn't get 1-click to work on either of my Windows 7 machines with two totally different installations; one being Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, and the other being Windows Home Premium 32-bit. Ultimately I ended up upgrading my system to Windows 10 and was able to unlock the bootloader without any difficulty at all. With the fresh upgrade to Windows 10, I simply uninstalled VirtualBox and reran the 1-click batch file. One thing that should be noted is that there's no reason to click the box to run VirtualBox at the end of the installation process, and may be something that contributed to my confusion and the confusion of others. Secondly, a window for PuttyTel should open up after VirtualBox is finished installing, and the PuttyTel window is where all of the "magic" takes place. I didn't find any of these distinctions in any of the numerous posts I scoured through, though I may have overlooked them.
Either way, thanks again to the three of you... now I just gotta figure out which ROM I'm gonna slap on this bad boy. Been waiting nearly 2 years for this moment.

Happy to hear you were sucesfull. Thanks also for sharing your experiences and insights. Should be helpful to others as they navigate through the process. Every nugget of new information helps!
So i just decided to join the rest of the world and get myself a rectangle. so i researched the 1 to 200 dollar range for weeks until i found my new shiny metal friend with great specs and a price that wouldn't keep me up at night. the le max 2 x829. but i love tech and was really looking forward to pushing this phone and learn about all it could do! i was really excited.
Until i started to learn about the many confusing programs needed to install custom roms or make a recovery file. things like that All of which need like 6 different programs all of which seem to need some other program in order to functional. I can't seem to even find a starting point! I HAVE NEVER FELT THIS STUPID IN MY ENTIRE LIFE. Someone please help. what programs do i need for a new os ? How does adb fit into the chain of programs needed to mod android? is twrp the first program needed? how does it all sort...fit to gather? Thanks for any help!
Man, honestly this forum is made to help people, but also people should use the search button. This question has been answered a million times already.
Long story short:
- Connect the phone to the PC and install the drivers (including ADB)
- Unlock bootloader (usually it's already unlocked)
- Download TWRP on your PC
- Install TWRP following the developer's steps
- Download your custom ROM
- Put the ROM on the internal memory
- Boot into TWRP
- Install the new ROM according to the instructions given by the developer and you're done...

Do you have it installed on the phone or just downloaded? If it's installed, jump over that step. If it's just downloaded, connect the phone to the pc by cable, transfer the files :cyclops:
I understand your concern. It's because there are a few ways of doing it, and so novices might be confused when comparing two different tutorials.
This one is very complete: https://forum.xda-developers.com/le-max-2/how-to/protocol-backup-stock-rom-flash-stock-t3517151
1. Connect your phone, it is supposed to install drivers automatically.
1.1 If not, you'll need to google it, but I believe this toolkit will help you. In fact, this tool is capable of doing all the process for you by simply clicking on some buttons.2. Install ADB Drivers. There are a few options and it is basically
2.1 @greenManGaming recommends 15 seconds ADB installer.
2.2 (Alternative) Minimal ADB and Fastboot. I've used this one.
2.3 (Alternative) ADB and Fastboot (newer) or Universal ADB and Fastboot (older) from the same dev.
OBS: I'm not sure if the toolkit requires or not one of these options to work properly or if it already does this task.3. Download TWRP (on your computer).
3.1 Follow the instructions from the official page. In short, put the img into the ADB folder.4. Follow the commands in the the tutorial mentioned.
4.1 In short, unlock the bootloader, boot twrp, complete backup, reboot into the system, copy the backup to your PC/Cloud service, get back to fastboot mode, flash twrp, then flash your ROM.
OBS: Suggestion for only booting TWRP at the first time is perfectly optional, you can flash it since the beginning but in this case you wouldn't be able to backup the original recovery and everything as the phone came, in case you need go back to request an RMA.

Huge drama for nothing. Sell the thing, it's obviously not for you. If you can't follow some simple instructions, then it's better to sell it to some guy who likes to try at least.

If you are not familiar with giving commands with command prompt, installing drivers and needed software (android studio or minimal adb install) then you are in for a challenge, if you are not willing to learn its better to sell the phone or use it with de preinstalled android.

Did you try watching different videos to have a big picture of the process? It would be the first step. Even if you don't understand English, simply watch it. You'll see what would happen after each action.
Then check the written tutorial. Not a big issue at all. Really. Even for newbies, I've been one when I had a Galaxy 5, my first android that doesn't even needed to flash a custom ROM.
Whether you think you can, whether you think you can't, you're right.
The command to load the TWRP will be done on your PC, however, only your phone will load it. In short, you'll be commanding your phone through your PC.
When you install Minimal ADB and Fastboot, it will install its files in a default folder. Inside its default folder is where you should place the TWRP image.

Hi all,
tl;dr: Tried to hard unbrick my Oneplus X, which was partly succesful (no OS is installed in the process, while there should be). I am now stuck with no OS and only the Oneplus recovery. I want to install an OS, but it says my bootloader is locked. To unlock it, I need an OS ==> vicious circle.
Full story below:
Recently I've decided to reinstall LineageOS on my Oneplus X because I had quite some problems with it (battery drain, apps crashing, wifi slow to connect, ...). I've done it like 5 times before on this device for various reasons, so I didn't expect any problems. I had LineageOS 14.1 and TWRP 3.0.3 installed. When I wiped everything, I wanted to flash the ROM I had ready using TWRP. However, gave an error number 7, saying that the ROM is not compatible for the device, which I am sure was. Remembering I had a similar issue a while back, I installed flashed an updated version of TWRP (3.2.2) using TWRP itself. That was successfull, but here's where the trouble began.
I noticed that TWRP didn't recognise any storage (Internal storage, SD card and USB-OTG all showed up as 0 MB) any longer. Neither could I mount any of the storages. I've tried a lot of things to solve this. After a while, I decided that the only hope left was the 'mega unbrick guide' (https://forums.oneplus.com/threads/guide-mega-unbrick-guide-for-a-hard-bricked-oneplus-x.417648/) which claims to be able to recover any device, unless it has a hardware problem. I got good hope as I got near the end of the guide. The last step says 'Disconnect phone from PC and boot into system', but here I got stuck on the Oneplus boot logo, making me think that there is no OS installed on the device.
I can still access the recovery using power button and volume down, but the recovery that the mega unbrick guide installs, is the limited Oneplus recovery. It allows to install a ROM from the local storage, or from USB using adb sideload. When I try option 1, nothing happens, no new screen opens or anything. When I try option 2, I enter the adb sideload mode which would normally allow me to sideload a ROM using my pc. My pc confirms I'm in adb sideload mode, and I try to sideload a ROM. It starts fine, but after a few seconds, it says 'Installation failed'. I've tried stock OOS, latest OOS as well as LineageOS 14.1 that was installed before.
Another thing that I can do in the Oneplus recovery is rebooting into fastboot mode, where I should be able to flash the recovery of my choice. Again, my phone confirms I'm in fastboot mode and I try to flash or boot TWRP recovery, but I get the message: 'FAILED (remote: Device not unlocked cannot flash or erase)'. Okay, seems like the bootloader is still locked, so I should just go and unlock it using 'fastboot oem unlock'. This gives the message: 'FAILED (remote: oem unlock is disabled)'. I've been searching around a lot on the internet, and it seems like the only way to enable oem unlock, is in the OS itself in the developer settings. But the problem is, I have no OS and cannot install one because the bootloader is not unlocked... So I'm stuck in this vicious circle.
I've been searching on the internet for hours and starting to lose hope. At this point, I would be happy if I can just have any OS (OxygenOS or LineageOS or something else) running. If I have that, I should be able to take it from there.
Any help is much appreciated. Thank you very much.
Kind regards,
Jeroen
Bump
Update:
Oneplus support could solve the problem for me! Or at least, partly. It appears that Oneplus has an updated version of the tool used in the mega unbrick guide: MSMDownloadTool V2.1 instead of V2.0. This tool did it's job perfectly, OOS was also installed, in contrast to V2.0 of the tool. I ****ed it up again after that (oops), but found the tool V2.1 online here (https://github.com/finlayacourt/Oneplus-X-Recovery). Some files are missing here like the system.img, but I just copied them from the folder of tool V2.0 found in the mega unbrick guide. It didn't work as perfectly as Oneplus's tool, but at least I was able to install OOS from the Oneplus bootloader, which I wasn't able to before. So knowing that, in the end, the result is the same as for their tool. A working OS again, perfect! So now I can unlock the bootloader again and continue the adventure.
Now, what I've found is that the mainboard I have on my OPX is a newer version (if you search on Google for 'oneplus E1003_15', you'll find some things about it, not much though). I'm 99% positive that this caused all the problems I've encountered. It is why TWRP couldn't see any storage, why the stock Oneplus recovery couldn't see any storage, why the tool V2.0 didn't work and why V2.1 did work. If I wanted a working TWRP, I had to install a modified version of TWRP which is compatible with the newer version, from here: https://www.android-hilfe.de/forum/...-1-oreo-rom-unofficial-onyx-8-1-x.867374.html (yes, once you're relying on German sites, you know you went very deep). After that, I could install LineageOS 14.1 again. I was unable to install the unofficial LineageOS 15.1 however, but knowing where I came from, what I've gone through and how much time I've lost on all of this, I think I'll just stick with LineageOS 14.1 until this baby can retire...
Got to say I only have very positive experiences with Oneplus and it's customer support, and this only adds to it!
I hope I can also help other people with the same problem.

Greatly appreciate your feedback here. I think that I am in the same situation you were. Used what you suggested - using MSM v2.1 that you provided with the system.img, non-hlos and userdata.img from MSM v2.0. The process ends with "Download Complete" written in green but when I check "Verify" it fails exactly @system.img, userdata and non-hlos. I can't boot recovery either after these.
Do you have any clue as to why it is so?

As far as I know, I haven't used the "Verify" button. Right after the green "Download Complete" line, I booted into the OOS stock recovery by pressing volume down and power button (I think? Not sure anymore, I always forget it). From there, I could install OOS with a official ROM image.
Are you sure you moved the correct files from V2.0 to V2.1? The way I knew which files to move, is by first starting the V2.1-program without any added files. Then it told me 'system.img missing' (or something like that), so I knew I had to add that. After adding that, I ran the program again and added the next file it said it was missing etc etc.
Sucks to hear your recovery process doesn't go as "smooth" (it's all relative of course) as mine.

Hah, did not expect an answer, I've seen your thread on oneplus forums as well, glad you were so quick to answer here. I've found the MSM2.1 uploaded in a google drive with all the files afterwards, after some long hours of searching too. Anyway, I still can't adb sideload anything, the storage seems 'corrupted' to say the least, but there are imporvements from MSM v2.0 and v3.0 flahses. The recovery menu works flawlessly now, no artifacts or freezes, also the phone 'almost' booted. It went to the "Updating android apps" thing.
I don't really know what to do next. Recovery does not help me at all. I can't sideload anything, it renders a "protocol fault" error. Internal storage has 2 empty folders within and that's about it. Also the bootloader is locked now and I can't make any use of fastboot mode.

Haha I know the feeling! But thanks to e-mail notifications.
I also thought that my storage was corrupted at first, given the symptoms I described in my first post, so I didn't expect my OPX to be revived, but hey it's still alive now.
I also had the locked bootloader-thing. The way I could unlock it, is by first installing OOS using the stock recovery (which was installed using the tool), then unlocking it in OOS, so I could install another recovery and eventually another OS.
I'm afraid I already explained the problems I encountered and the procedure I followed pretty detailed. If you have anything that deviates from this, I'm sorry to say that I can't really help you with that, even if I wanted to. Did you perform the exact steps I mentioned (including the V2.1-tool that I linked to)? What exactly do you mean with the "3.1 flash"?
It's also already 2 months ago, so I don't even know exactly what I've done apart from what I've described...

It was a typo, I meant v2.0 and v3.0(for oneplus 3). The op3 unbrick guide suggested that the v3.0 might work for oneplus x as well, so I tried that out too.
Anyway, I've done the process a couple more times and the phone booted untill you set the device up, when you are finished it just reboots. I can see the lock screen, I can't bring down the upper bar or enter the settings, if unlocked it prompts me to the first time set up and upon it's completion the phone reboots. I wiped cache, data did a factory reset. Now it's back with the recovery menu artifacts and not booting anymore either. I will use that tool a couple more times then I am done until further suggestions from this forum. After all, my life does not depends on reviving it, I was gonna give it to my brother, who shattered his phones' touchscreen, until he repairs his. Thank you again for replying, no need to reply to this, unless it can help my case.
I have been through hell and high water today with this Nord N200 5G today. Soft Brick after Soft Brick. iI only flashed TWRP and try to boot into OS after exiting TWRP but i get No OS you sure you want to reboot?. I also can't figure out how to get my internal storage viewed in TWRP. I've read multiple guides and still can't figure it out. I"m pretty new to this so . and they try to flash Magisk for root as well as super su during on adventure fiasco after fiasco today. The Bootloader and OEM unlock was simple straight forward. Most Guides though are not in LAMENS terms and have abbreviations that new people do not understand. i have had to reflash my phone 20+ today with factory due to the NO OS problem with TWRP and can't get it so i can view my internal data from twrp even though i've followed several guides and the ones that says to do the wipe thing i always get the error about it can't mount the data or it has encountered and error 255 and by got try looking things up for those and you you get sent all over the place. So If there is Anyone Out There That would like to help an old geezer out to be able to get a stable TWRP and a Stable root going on please Respond. Sorry Had to Vent......
Oh yea and not to mention Unable to install 3.6.2
TWRP is not officially launched for this phone. In my opinion lineage is the best option for this phone as of now. It has a custom recovery and is easily rooted as well. https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/rom-official-dre-12l-lineageos-19.4473129/

A couple of questions before I jump into that.
How are updates handled? Does the OS do auto-updates?
How is the camera?
I don't know a lot about this phone, but previous phones I've owned had proprietary camera/software, and any custom ROM not based on the stock OS lost camera quality because it couldn't use the proprietary software..

Obviously not who you were asking but I just updated to Lineage and it was fairly straightforward following the directions, just make sure you're on Android 11. Updates can be done through settings menu, I just actually applied an update and it worked fine. It can check for updates every day, week, month if you choose I don't know if it will automatically update it though. Camera I have not tried as I don't use it as an everyday phone but generally from what I've seen it's common to have quality go down using software other than stock but I could be wrong.
I can't speak on the difference in camera quality because I dont use it much. There is some loss of function between the stock camera app and the aftermarket rom camera app
This phone has no official twrp so it has tons of decrypting issues which explains almost all of your problems.
What worked for me is to avoid touching the phone if at all possible while in TWRP. It's very unstable and if you click something it will try to mount partitions and somehow brick you in the process. While booted into TWRP I did almost everything via ADB command from my computer instead of through the TWRP menus, including reboot.
I Pushed my magisk package to /tmp instead which worked. I'm just going to go the lineage route later though. I don't think it's worth messing with TWRP on this device.
Update: Phone Complete Bricked. Says something like The Image(boot/recovery) has been destroyed please flash the correct image or call customer service to fix it. on top of this....Unable to flash anything. everything no matter what it is, i even tried to follow a guide to get back to factory and it say that no such partition or volume full. Oh and it's an A/B partition phone

how do you push? ive tried the adb push and to no avail... it just keeps saying it's unable to. oh and when i did have twrp installed it wouldn't boot into the os unless i fastboot boot twrp.img then it would reset and finally boot into regular os

I believe it was just "adb push boot.img /tmp/boot.img"
And then in TWRP when selecting a file to flash you have to click on the top level option to go up a directory and find /tmp while not clicking anything else. I pushed to tmp to avoid mounting any partitions since the phone bricked everytime that happened.

how do i get the phone completely unbricked cause it's saying something like The Image[boot, recovery] has been destroyed please flash correct image or contact customer service to fix it
I forgot to mention that I can no long get into recovery it won't even flash a recovery anymore. it will say it completed successfully but i got to boot recovery and it just boot right back into bootloadre/fastboot mode. i even tried to do fastboot --set-active=a and fastboot --set-active=b tried booting into each of them and nothing. when i do fastboot getvar all it says that boot_a and boot_b are unbootable. any idea how to fix this?
Will be trying again in a week when i get my new unlock token. just took the phone to the store, said that the bricking of the phone happend during an update. They didn't have any Nord N200's in stock so they ordered one and said they would have it in the store in a day or two. onto the next phone til then. any ideas on a TCL A509DL Trac Phone?

You need to use MSM tools to unbrick. It'll restore your device to stock and relock your bootloader.

i'm not sure if you can even get the devices to connect to the unbrick tools in a virtual machine. to save some time, use a physical computer running windows 10+ and use a virtual machine as a last resort or if you don't have another computer.
by the way, make sure you have the drivers.

i don't have another machine only the one i'm using running MX linux. and with all the Distro's of linux i have installed and used there is no need to install drivers for phones for every phone, 3 that i have connected to my computer it' has recognized all 3 phones and runs adb and fastboot commands fine on them. Lol, Took me a minute to read your name but Love the Name.
Haha, don't flash it. Boot it. I ended up stop using it and am now using the Lineage OS Recovery. SUPER stable. I am in the works making a new TWRP as well... This unofficial variant just isn't working for me either. So, I figured since im making it doe myself, might as well release it

There is a command line alternative for Linux. It is originally made for flashing android boards, but works with phones as well.
