[Q] Stock M8 not USB compliant with 2015 Mazda CX5! workaround? - AT&T HTC One (M8)

Hi guys
Weaned myself off Apple with HTC One M8 (love it). I used the extra storage to re-rip my CDs to uncompressed files. They sound great!
Bought a brand new Mazda CX5 Grand Touring with Tech pkg (love it) partially because it was "Android compatible" .
It has 9 speakers with 5.1 surround-but it will only "surround" through the USB port or with a CD.
HTC bluetooth pairs, but won't recognize the car through USB!! I am told by HTC it is not compatible. Is this an issue with all new vehicles or just Mazda?
What is blocking this? Any work arounds without rooting?
I have a rooted Google Nexus 10, but would rather keep my phone stock while under contract if possible.
Thanks.

The issue is that Android has converted to MTP mode instead of USB mass storage; with the latter being what car stereo head units require.
Not sure if there is a mod to convert to USB mass storage, but I'd start there. Probably need root to do so (if such a mod exists).

Why? Warranty is still honored on a rooted phone. Only things that are out of warranty on AT&T are physical or water damage.

Pushing audio through microUSB to head unit

So one thing I really liked about my iPhone was the ability to push audio through the charge port into my truck's head unit (radio) while charging. The head unit has a usb port on the front and it charges my phone, and if I put the phone into storage mode, the head unit can read the storage on my phone. Now I want to push audio from apps like Google Play Music and iheart radio. Is this possible? I'm rooted.
Also on a side note, since I am rooted, can I update OTA without looking root? I used the steps from galaxys3root.com.

Sorry bud but most USB head units are mass storage or iPhone only. I'd invest on a Bluetooth headunit with audio streaming profile like the Sony MEX-BT4000P.
Get a windshield mount (had a factory one for my Atrix, loved it) and Bluetooth that bad boy. You'll also get cool stuff like car phone answering and if you use Vlingo in car you can made heads turn.
This feature will come with jelly bean

That is awesome!! But until that time comes, is there a way to do that on ICS?

I've been trying to get this to work for about a week now. The guys at my local car audio place are just as frustrated as I am.
I even tried using the OTG connection, no dice.
Supposedly some of the new Sony units support MTP, but then you're using Sony (which I guess doesn't have a great reputation, I'm kind of new to this whole thing).
CM will probably get Mass Storage enabled at some point, but that still isn't an ideal solution.
Jelly Bean will offer true USB audio streaming, but from what I've read the device you are streaming to will also have to support it. Whether that support can be added via a firmware update or will require new hardware is something I haven't been able to figure out yet.
This is all very annoying since part of the reason I got my S3 was to finally upgrade the sound in my car. I know I can use an Aux or Bluetooth connection in the meantime, but if the Jelly Bean tech requires new hardware it will be a pain to sell my old hardware and re-install the new.
I guess at this point it's just waiting to see when/if headunits will support the Jelly Bean audio streaming.

The thing is, I don't have the money to get a new head unit.. I could just connect the aux to the unit. I also forgot to mention I have a Sony Xplod (Not sure of the model right now, but it's about 2 years old.)
I think I'm just forced to connecting aux and usb to keep it charged on my trips..
Mass Storage has been enabled for the International S3, so it's likely it will for the US version soon. That should solve a lot of your problems. Though as I said above, UMS is still not an ideal solution (but far superior to Aux or Bluetooth).

I'm a noob when it comes to Andriod.. I am a recovering iPhone user and do not know what most of the acronyms mean. I've looked around on google and can't find what they mean lol. OTG, MTP, and CM, what do they mean?
Also, is there a way to hurry up the process of me being verified for my new user account? The waiting 5 minutes is getting old... Thanks

Once you pass 10 posts the 5 minute limit will be lowered to 2 minutes.
OTG = On the Go http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB_On-The-Go
MTP = Media Transfer Protocol, as opposed to Mass Storage. I'm not clear on the reason for using it since it seems like UMS is more useful in almost every way.
CM = Cyanogenmod. The most popular and widespread Android ROM.
Ahh ok thank you! I should be getting close to that haha. And I guess UMS is something like Universal Mass Storage?

Zero Devices Z902 Android "Stick PC"?

Hey guys, I'm not sure where to even post about this.
I ordered two of the Zero Z902 mini computers, since they're currently on sale at Asia Pads for $75 a pop.
http://www.asiapads.com/product_info.php?products_id=2291
The highlights:
-CPU is a 1.5 GHz Cortex-A8 "AllWinner A10" package.
-1GB of RAM
-4GB internal flash storage
-WiFi B/G/N onboard
-MicroSD slot with support for up to 32GB of additional storage (pretty much standard)
-stock ROM is some sort of ICS
-Unit is freaking TINY, has a built in HDMI male plug on it, and can be powered off of USB. This means if you get lucky with your TV's port layouts and USB port voltage, you could just piggy back this guy onto the back of your TV and not have to run any cables to it.
The spec sheet on AsiaPads is a fairly amazing Engrish translation, but the company actually making the devices is somewhat reputable.
The Z902 appears to be their third or fourth generation of this type of device, and this one is supposedly pretty decent. Here's their site:
http://www.zero-devices.com/
It seems like this device could be pretty decent. My package of two was delivered today to my house. I'm writing this from the office. I wasn't able to find anyone talking about this device on XDA yet, so I figured I'd post about it.
If its awesome, or terrible, I'll post my OOBE and hacking experiments here
My primary use-case for this is a tiny & silent thing to attach to my TV and give me XBMC and NetFlix at a really good price.
I may test it out for use as an emulator if it doesn't immediately burst into flames when playing Avengers in 1080P
Hopefully if that happens I'll catch it on video...
I found a generic CM10 ROM for A10 tablets, so I'm hoping that with some help I can get CWM working on this device and then maybe custom ROMs? We'll see how terrible the stock ROM is.
From what I have, Zero Devices gives you a rooted device right out of the box, and "stock" Android should be pretty good I hope.
First update:
I was able to hook up one of the two Z902s I ordered to my TV without anything catching on fire or dying.
The device works and can put out 1080P video.
I was able to get the stock Market working as expected, and pretty much immediately installed YouTube, which works nicely.
The UI in general feels kinda slow / crappy, and I'm not sure what exactly to pin this on yet.
I am presently very new at operating Android via mouse & keyboard so its pretty awkward LOL
The stock ROM is honestly kinda terrible and, in its present form, basically useless to me.
BS Player plays everything in SW mode for some reason.
NetFlix will not install from the Market.
XBMC crashes at launch without generating any xbmc.log file.
In the Settings > Info, I see the "Neon" CPU feature listed, but I tested both the "Neon" and non-Neon builds.
I was able to get an SSH app installed and working.
What's weird is, there appears to be a su binary present, but SuperUser.apk I am used to using doesn't work.
I mean, I appear to be able to do "root" stuff, but never get any prompts to OK app access to root.
Also I am unable to remount /system as RW.
My next task is to get some form of ADB connection to the device working so I can further troubleshoot this.
I suspect I'm gonna have to modify boot.img to allow /system to be modified. We'll see.
I didn't have time to set up the device so I could SSH into it from work today, so can't make any progress until tonight.
Hey, DivinityCycle, thanks for your post. I have ordered the Z902 but still waiting. Glad to hear they are shipping. I am using an android 4.1 set top box which is a learning experience. Wireless mouse barely usable. I will come back here when I have anything on the Z902.
I just got my Z902 today. I found the same thing that you did regarding the root. Can mount system as writeable. I also found that MANY apps in the Market are not compatible with this device so they won't let me install them.
I'll be interested to hear what other people's experiences are.
You mean "can't" mount the system as writeable?
Honestly I have been busy with a lot of other stuff, so I haven't bothered messing with my Z902 yet, sort of hoping someone else will get root on it first. We also will need someone to get CWM or something equivalent ported before anything truly useful can be done.
Is it even possible to get ADB to this thing working via some sort of USB hookup?
oops. yeah. "cannot" mount.
It does seem you can do a usb hookup. There is some kind of utility (And driver maybe) on their website.
I downloaded an app called "Root Checker" but it just hangs when I click "Verify root access"
ADB is key to getting even a really basic root going, I think.
From what I have read elsewhere, the boot.img must be modified to allow us to remount / and /system as RW.
Post a link to the site, wouldja? I'm going on vacation starting on Friday, so I may actually find some time to work on this a bit.

Its A piece Of Crap. I bought one (Pre-ordered) from asiapads.com. The 4.04 Android OS is very unstable and slow. Device claims to be rooted by only one out of ten apps requiring root were able to run. OS has a built in SU hidden somewhere that does not require permission. Most apps requiring root are not granted permission Others like Titanium backup ARE able to get it. You cannot install your own SuperUser app either. It says you do not have root access. No custom Roms are available for the z902 yet so your stuck with stock. Also, large downer is no built in Bluetooth I have 15 different cheap USB Bluetooth dongles which none of them work after hours of tinkering. Must have 2.4g keyboard or mouse to control. Otherwise you have to plug in a mouse or keyboard manually (One at a time) into the one regular USB 2.0 port. After installing about 20 apps on the device the OS became very unstable with choppy mouse movement. I did not like this so i wanted to do a benchmark test. To be fair though i reset the OS to factory settings erasing everything. I got a scare here when doing the factory reset though. The OS would not boot back up. It instead got stuck in a booting loop. Loading the Zero devices welcome screen then The android loading screen. Then turn off loosing hdmi signal to the TV. A few seconds later the Zero devices Welcome screen would load and continuing this loop. After watching 8-9 loops, I gave up (A bit Mad that I even bought the piece of ****) and walked away. After playing on my phone for about 4 minutes the TV made noise drawing my attention. The OS finally loaded up correctly to the initial setup screen. Installed and ran Antutu Benchmark getting a very low score of 2200 (1.5 stars) and the CPU range was from 0.008-1.005 GHz When its claimed to have a 1.5GHz Cortex-A8. I tried to take screenshots of the results but all the screenshot apps required root and kept force closing. Overall I would highly NOT recommend this product. Instead buy a cheap phone or tablet with an hdmi output. Any of them would provide a better product than this UN-powerful PC Stick that is going in my junk drawer. BTW, my phone got a benchmark score of over 5000 and it also has a 1.5GHz processor.
Also it comes with a card that shows how its authentic and that you can check out its authentic on there website. But the websites checker does not seem to work. Whats the point..
I just received the z902 this week and I'm not unhappy with the purchase. I mean, I bought it to give some "intelligence" to an old TV and it is doing the trick.
I must confess I have only installed a couple of apps (MX Player, Youtube, ES File Explorer...), but it doesn't seem to behave slowly. I agree with the fact that I don't understand/like why can't I install some apps (e.g., Chrome).
Overall I'm happy with the device, taking into account that I just want it to play video and maybe surf the web. High def video plays perfectly fine, so I'm good. Despite everything, I hope in a neer future it will be possible to install CWM and then CM10.
BTW, if you don't want to spend money on a wireless keyboard/mouse, and have an Android tablet/smartphone, check DroidMote, for 1.99 is worth the value. In fact I think you can even install it for free if you go the dev's post here at XDA.

Maybe it is silly to ask, but did you connect it to the AC? Remember that HDMI is not giving the device any power so you have to connect it via the USB cable provided to the TV or to one plug with an adapter.
If that is not the case... post more details on how you connect it and maybe we can help.
There is also a reset button that does a hard reset.

I found out the hard way that the 902 needs a little extra power. After using a 600mA phone charger and a TV USB port and only getting half way through the boot sequence I changed to a 1A charger and viola!
Not sure if this is the same issue you've been having, but I thought I'd share it.

Did you try a >=1A charger?
(See my post above)
Tatting, that is a great find! I'm pretty sure my TV's USB port doesn't pack enough punch to run the stick at a full 1A, so that may explain my stability issues. I've been working on a ROM for my tablet, so haven't been focused too much on the stick PCs for now.
I AM learning some good tricks which may help in ROMing the stick eventually. The first / most important thing we need for this device to be more useful is CWM. I honestly don't know how feesible it is to port it to this device.
It seems like CWM mostly just needs to know how the store device partitions are laid out on the device, and in this case, probably needs to be patched for keyboard input. This device is kindof on my back-burner for now since I have a lot of other crap I'm working on and I just got notice that my Raspberry Pi has shipped, so I'll probably have it within 21 days. The Pi seems like it'll occupy much the same usecase as the 902, but without as much crappiness. We'll see!
Bigger power supply! It finally solved my problem. No Z902 boot with 500ma. Unstable with 700ma. I am going for greater than 800ma, Will overheating be the next nuisance?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda premium
so basically I've determined that although the device IS rooted, the system file system cannot be mounted as R/W. I've tried several different utilities and they've all come up with the same result.
I'm also frustrated in that I've contacted AsiaPads and have not received a response.
---------- Post added at 04:08 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:04 PM ----------
BTW, I'm using a 1amp power supply on mine. When it comes to amperate, a higher rating on the power supply is ok. The device will only pull the amperate that it needs.
I am using 1 amp supply and Z902 now works properly. Why didn't their support people say this?

Best radio to use to connect P3113 to my car

Originally I had wanted to mount the P3113 right into my dash (in place of the radio) then I found out that they don't make custom kits to fit the tab. Had a friend estimate the time/price to make it happen and even from him doing the work it looked like it would be about $400 to build the custom parts for it. Not to mention about a days worth of work.
So based on above, I have decided to go another route, I am going to get a mount, and just put the tab over the radio (not in the dash just on the mount arm). So now I am left looking for a really cheap new radio, since no one will ever see the radio face since the tab will be in front of it.
Anyone have any suggestions on a cheap sturdy radio that I could get? Anyone done anything like what I am trying to do before? If possible I would like all the parts to be reusable for when I buy a new car down the road (currently in a 2002 Honda Civic).

However not in my possible world right now, I can't afford that much time/labor from my friend.
Thus I am looking into a radio head to install that will work the best with the tab, whether it be USB aux or a regular headphone Aux.
Any other suggestions? Or ways to do the original idea on the mega cheap lol

Not sure how either of the past 2 posts were off topic, unless you meant the topic of the thread altogether, then I don't know where else this would go.
This is kind of about accessories, its something that hooks up to your tab for use, in it's most basic form I think that is what an accessory is (I don't know the exact definition, so I apologize if I am incorrect).
His post with the link was on topic in the fact that that was my original plan however to pricey/time consuming.
So now I am looking into radios for the car, since I can always take the radio to my next vehicle when the time comes, I can't always take a custom made dash mount.
Any thoughts into a good cheap radio would be appreciated, I wasn't sure if USB would be an option with a radio, so that is something I could def use advice on, I would be using I Heart Radio for example, and I wasn't sure if that would play through a USB connection, or if it needs to be audio out through the headphones.
I'd go with a BlueTooth receiver. Here's one for $90

No CD. But will do USB & AUX & BT
I have a 2000 Xterra with the stock CD/cassette/am/fm radio in it. I use the cassette adapter or a radio transmitter to a headphone plug with no problems. The cassette adapter is a lil clearer to me.
Just mount the Tab, plug in to the adapter, and you are ready to rock out!

Android Car Stereo (AN6B01)

I purchased an android based car stereo a few months ago and am thinking about trying to cook a rom for it.
I am inexperienced in cooking, but am quite computer savy. Also am new to posting here, so if this is in the wrong area I apologize.
I know there isn't going to be much interest, but I thought maybe I would post some info here and see what I get. I think decks may be heading in this direction and some input would be great.
The only real downside so far to the unit is that it has a somewhat outdated os and boot time is that of a phone. So speeding up the boot time and upgrading the os would be top priority.
The deck is an Adayo AN6B01. Came stock with 2.2 froyo. I cannot post links being that I am new so here's the best I could do.

There's a good review from Nils Schneider at (t * co/qC7uy8Lk)
On my tests Gingerbreak 1.1 or 1.2 are not able to root the unit
The unit is great, it has some minor issues on Reverse Camera Mask that I´d like to correct on Camera.apk, but seems that without root I'll not be able to reinstall the modified application.
Another issue is the 3G modem compatibility. It´s not any modem that works with it... a good reason to root the unit and check some logs...
From my experience with a similar unit from Dynavin, everything is peachy until you try to add in support for the touch screen drivers which are closed source - or at least were on my unit. This is the only thing that has halted previous attempts to upgrade to a newer version of android.

I have just ordered one of these units as a xmas prezzie from my wife..
the unit looks great , but being a rooted galaxy s3 user i am also very interested in being able to upgrade this unit
ill keep an eye on this forum and when i recieve my head unit , will post as much info as possible to try and help in any way i can
Good to see there is a thread about the radio. I wrote the review mentioned above some weeks ago.
How did you get this update to version 1.19? My dealer didn't inform me about any update. I'm just downloading and will try it out this weekend.
Hopefully I don't brick the unit, as my branding is Nakamichi.
Rooting the unit would be very nice.
I currently work on an app that listens to the iSteering events and translates them into regular media keys, a first test already succeeded.

Another issue is the 3G modem compatibility. It´s not any modem that works with it... a good reason to root the unit and check some logs...

I have a Huawei E160 here that works.
Hello Lyve,
I got my Nakamichi 1300 Android yesterday. I have made some program installations outside car and want to install it at Saturday. Do you have made the 1.19 update from K1 unit? Does it work and do you have found important chnages? Thanks for an answer.

Damn, so someone's already done it, eh? Making something like this has been on my mind for years now, and I guess I shouldn't be surprised it's already been made. I was thinking of using a nano-itx atom-based board and android on x86, but arm is so much better supported so that's good.
'Nuff about my idea, have you opened this unit up? Do you have the wifi adapter for it? I wonder if you can find any open ports by scanning that wifi adapter's IP. Maybe you could telnet to it lol. I see it has USB... do you have a USB serial dongle? There has to be some way to get an adb shell at least, I would think. I asked about opening it up because many embedded devices will have some headers on their mainboard for a serial or USB connection.
Cool stuff, let us know what else you find out about it and good luck.
Edit: I'm going to download the firmware update and see if I can find out anything from that... no promises though.
Hello tethrk,
WIFI adapter was included and works fine. I do not have opened the device because there are many warranty labels on it. I Paid 600€. When it gets defective, I do not want to have discussions with the dealer. I have no serial adapter for rooting the device, but I think this is a very interesting point. At the moment there is Android 2.2 on it. I found some apps who needs Android 4+ and can't run with 2.2. But anyway, I have installed yesterday in my car and it works really fine. One point is steering wheel control and hearing music when navigating. But I will try to make this working today. Google navigating and hearing music works, but Sygic and music not for example. Overall a nice expensive toy
Best regards
Andreas
Apparently that download contains a system image, but the filesystem used is ubifs. This means that I have to use some mtd hack to mount the image. Hopefully I can get to it tomorrow.

Hi,
I have checked the content from update 1.19. My files on device are the same date. So I have it installed in radio. I hope there comes a new update soon which I get from my dealer. Especially when the rear cam switched back and the radio traffic system switched back, I have some problems. Nomrally it should switch back to previous used source, but it does not. For example after traffic message has finished, it switch back to AUX2 but not to source I have heard before.

Well after a long nightmare getting mine through customs, it seems it will finally be in my possession tomorrow, although I am going to have to wait for an auto electrician to install it.

some news???
Hello everybody.
is there any news regarding the rooting of this device? I did realize that the hard reset (menu+back+power) did not work (as well as the reset button). Its hard to take the chances without having the possibility to restore the head unit to factory standards if something go wrong...
mine head unit is the AIKON AK-010a by the way.
The system seams really secured, there is no possibility even to change the dock apps. ;(
looking forward for some news.
everybody quit???
Hi guys,
lets put this thread back to live. I did find a way to receive the update data from the adayo an6b01.
Considering I do have an AIKON I would like to know how are my chances to brick the device going through the update.
I verify that some of my apks are "foryou" which are the same from the adayo.
Any tips?
Hi, I've had this unit for a few months now and I was able to root it using the z4root app that is available on the pay store. I haven't really done anything fancy except backup the files using titanium backup. I'm using the Adayo version by the way.
I too have just managed to root my device with z4 ...
I am currently working on a better launcher solution using " home simple " as a base and modifying it
Ill try and get some screens and post some stuff up tommorow...
Im really pleased this has rooted ok... now its time to mod the hell out of it

That website is fake. You can't unlock the bootloader. You should considering trading your gear s for a tmobile one or just buy one on ebay.
Unlocked bootloader will never happen for a device like this. Trade it in or just buy a tmobile one if u can find one.

To answer that question; "Yes." I'm not sure why One would make a comment, without knowledge of the process. Pay no mind to them. What you need to do is follow the thread I provide, and work your way from there. Good luck.:fingers-crossed:

Also, take the bands off off your GearS2 G3/4 models such as my SM-R730A and One will see a tab that can be removed... This is a magnetic USB port. One can adhere or solder a USB, or use the old Gear 2 charger and tape it tight. This will allow for wired transfer. Also if you do your research, there is a port # associated with the Gear S2 to use whilst connected to a PC by BT. (Bluetooth)
I have added ringtones, notifications, changes to system UI, added my own .wgt (widget) files and the like. All I need to do is figure out how to get Google to work through ifttt, or ported standalone widget.
