So is the Nexus 9 going to have an unlocked bootloader? Or one that will be easy to unlock by doing say "fastboot oem unlock"? Will it void the warranty? When will the source code be released?
So. I have a really hard time to choose this or the nvidia shield tablet what do you think?

I don't know right now. It's an HTC device so I'm assuming it'll be unlocked like other HTC devices, through www.htcdev.com. I've been spending some time in the HTC one M8 forum to learn about it. I don't think fastboot oem unlock will work. But we'll see.

I'd say that the boot loader will be easily unlockable as this is a nexus device and they are intended first and foremost for developers.

Does anyone know how much actual formatted space will be available for the two models? And I read a comment saying that since Android L will be using ART then there will be even less space available. Im deciding between getting a 32gb N9 or a 16gb with a 64gb Corsair Voyager Go or something of the kind.
Both the Nexus 6 and Nexus 9 have digital signal processing according to Google. Which means that they will both support things like "ok google" with the screen off.

Based on the n5 16 gb will have about 12 usable and 32, 28. Art will compile in the system partition so won't affect usable shortage.

Will the Nexus 9 have the same quick charge feature as the Nexus 6?
I think that's built into the snapdragoon 805, different SOC so not really sure.

No, no precedent. Does ANY tablet over 6" have voice telephony ? I thought I might have heard about one or 2.
HTC's only other tablet was the Flyer, which sucked and died years ago in 2011. I asked an HTC guy once for "free developer devices". I was offered a Flyer and declined, LOL. (And they sent an HTC Status/Chacha, LOL again.)
Does the Nexus 9 have the same DirectStylus capability that both the Tegra Note 7 and the Nvidia Shield Tablet do? This decides whether or not I actually get this tablet.
Don't think so. BTW had nvidia shield tablet and sent it back with in a week.

OK guys and gurls here it goes
Basically I have enjoyed my time with this community and have learnt a hell of a lot to do with ROM development and have therefore used this knowledge to create my own ROM for the Galaxy s WiFi 5.0, ICS-Crumble which I am humble has been downloaded alot of times and has received great support so a HUGE thanks there. It has also allowed me to port ROMs like Hydr0g3n and others.
There comes a time when we move on lol and unfortunately that time has come. Basically I don't really want to go into great detail on why ive sold the device but im heading to University in Sep and I have to pay £400 deposit now and then £9000 a year myself so i really need the money lol
So yea thats me saying im stopping development on my ROMs but im not leaving XDA completely (im still active on the Galaxy s2) . So thanks guys and hopefully i have contributed to this great device.
Peace out

Good luck with your degree and I understand that uni is expensive (I've been going to open days recently and its £9000 a year + living fees ) . I may also stop developing for the SGP as I'm getting a nexus 7. However I don't really want to abandon this device so I will try my best to continue devving here

Same with me, I will be receiving my HTC one s next week so I will probably be helping out with the development community over there. I won't abandon the galaxy player entirely, but most of my time and efforts will be spent over in the one s forums.
Thanks everyone for support! Too bad these galaxy players were never very popular with developers..

Wow this is a real consternation. Thanks people for all your support here . I think I will continue to be there until I get my nexus 7 too (just need the money).

That's a bad thing indeed that no devs can't help us to get at least a barebone ICS.
I know this is off topic but we were talking about nexus 7 so.. I would like to know if the nexus 7 sold at BH have the 25$ credit for play store. (I don't want to pay abusive PST from play store):

I've been reading through the specs for the Nexus 7 and the SGP 5.0 has slightly better specs in some areas.
The Nexus 7 only has b/g/n wifi but SGP has a/g/b/n so better wifi connectivity (faster, less interference on SGP)
SGP has a rear camera although it doesn't work on any ICS roms
The SGP has physical buttons (I don't like on-screen buttons so much)
The SGP has a micro-SD card slot
The SGP comes with an unlocked bootloader (Nexus bootloaders are easy to unlock with a fastboot command but it wipes data and can prevent ota updates)
However, the Nexus 7 is still an amazing device and I'm sorry for the slightly off topic post
No dude, don't stop yourself from getting a nexus 7 because of us! Face it; galaxy player hardware is 3 generations old, and with amazing devices like the nexus 7 coming out, the life of it is over. I don't think many people will choose a single core gingerbread device over a quad core jb device, so the galaxy player is finished, mostly. It was an epic device, and if Samsung had marketed it right, could have been a huge hit. To late, so time to move on. Even if I do get a nexus 7, I will probably keep up on my galaxy player, for sentimental purposes, lol!

Big lost for our community
I must buy another device :/
I'm seriously thinking about moving from the Tablet S to the Nexus 7. The biggest factor influencing me is the ability to keep my software more up-to-date, both through being in the Nexus family and through a more active development community. Android is developing its software so quickly right now (we just got ICS, and JB is already on several devices), and devices will be falling off the map pretty quickly. Having a Nexus device seems like the best way to protect against this.
I'm a little worried about losing the 2" of screen real estate. While the size and weight of the Tablet S make it a little awkward for reading on a plane, it does make for an outstanding movie player. I do think the IR remote is a very good idea, but the reality is that I almost never use it. Even when I have my tablet in my hand, out of habit, I pick up the remote to change channels or adjust the volume. Losing the SD card concerns me a little too, but the cloud services have come a long way, and I'm not sure it's necessary. What else might I lose if I make the switch?
I think I'm going to pick up a Nexus 7, compare the two for a few days, and make a decision at that point. But I'd love to hear from the community about this as well. Anyone else thinking about making this move? When thoughts have you had about the decision? What factors are influencing your choice to stay or go?
EDIT: stupid auto-correct still doesn't like "tablet"
Yep, I'm planning on making this move. The lack of root and an unlocked bootloader has made the Tablet S really unattractive next to a $200 pure Google tablet that will surely have a large dev community behind it. I don't mind the smaller screen, personally. The only thing I think I'd really miss is the native PS3 controller support, which makes playing emulated games on it an ease.

I'll be moving over from the Sony Tablet S to Nexus 7. I hate this tablet, not many devs have taken it onboard to customize it and hack the device. The Nexus 7 should be alot more dev friendly
I'm also thinking about replacing my Tablet S by a Nexus 7 one...
I've spent a lot of time analyzing the works of great developers in order to find a way to gain root on the Tablet S, trying several exploits, mixing tricks used for other devices in hope of discovering something working and have certainly learned a lot of things by doing that but every game becomes boring if you always lose...
Well, it will be no game at all if the Nexus 7 is built like the Galaxy Nexus phone where "fastboot OEM unlock" is enough to unlock the bootloader but it will make myself spend time using my tablet rather than unsuccessfuly try to root it!
PS
Yes, some people -like me- feel sick holding an unrooted android device in their hands. There is no explanation for this, it 's certainly stupid but that's the way it goes. Must be genetic
I called the Staples down the street from my office today to see if they had any N7s. Rep said they had four that just came off a truck. I went and grabbed one.
I'm just starting to play around with it. My initial reactions are: 1) the build quality feels amazing, and 2) it freaking flies.
Honestly, if I don't find a legitimate deal-breaker, this thing probably has a permanent home.
Another huge perk that I've not seen mentioned yet--while being so basic--is the ability to charge with micro USB. That damn Sony charger really limits how mobile the Tablet S truly is.

Two questions, if you please :
- does the Nexus 7 offer SD card support?
- have you try booting into fastboot mode and try the "fastboot OEM unlock" command (there should be a confirmation box allowing to leave without doing it)?

No SD card support, which is a slight concern. I have a 64 gb card in my Tablet S. Naturally, I chose the 16 over the 8 gb N7. With Google Play, though, I really shouldn't need to much space.
There is a toolkit for unlocking the bootloader, if that's what you're asking. I'll give it a try when I get home tonight. I don't see any options for unlocking directly from fastboot.

Google is an Internet based company. They want you to save your stuff online, even way they produced a laptop it had very little hard drive capacity. Unfortunately for me anyway, Internet connections in my area are to slow and unreliable to keep photos, music etc purely online.

Well nexus is yet to be launched and s3 was announced back in Feb , so you can in no way expect s3 to beat nexus in hardware. If and when galaxy s4 comes out, it will kick nexus 4s ass. If you compare note 2 to nexus 4 , it will be a fair comparison

How much more can smart phones improve? Surely manufacturers can't be far off on maxing out on new features and useful processing speed.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
Rumors say that Nexus 4 will not have external sd card slot. If this is really so, GS3 will definitively beat it since without sd card slot, you really can't do anything with your device. For example, I use my external sd card to back all the content of my phone and if I got a new phone, I can simply plug my sd card into it, install Titanium backup and restore everything on the new phone. An Android without external sd is just an iPhone!
The Nexus 4 manual has been leaked, so I'm sure a more concrete answer can be found in there, but Nexus devices (save for the One) will never have a memory card slot because Google are philosophically against them. I think there's a Google engineer that talks about why when interviewed about the GNex. For that reason, I will never buy a Nexus phone, as I cannot take them seriously when they only come with 8/16 GB storage around these parts with no room for expansion

Yes, I saw that too. It's good news. Smaller footprint vs. the GT-I9300 but thicker 9.1mm vs. 8.6.
The cheapest model has only 8GB of storage. Price is cheap and it's unlocked but does one carry a music collection, pictures/ videos etc.
They are pushing for the cloud and I am not willing.

Nexus 4 price
I live in Finland where electronic products in general are expensive due to high tax rate but does anyone know about the price of the 16gb model in Europe? I've read that the price in the US is 350$ which in worst case might translate into 350€ or more.
This is a little off topic but comparing the Nexus 4 with the Asus Padfone 2, which would you say is the better phone, specswise and considering build quality?
I think they're equals at least, with Nexus 4 having the better design and vanilla android, but S3 having better build quality (if rumours about LG's quality is to be trusted) and features. Specs wise, they both perform pretty much on the same level anyway
I haven't heard about any quality/ build problems RE LG.
I am going to get the Nexus 4 because it's vanilla Android (sick and tired of waiting on OEMs to release updates) and because it's pentaband.
Just wish it were a tad thinner.

I don't know if you are paying attention to the development forum but they have clockwork tethered n on the device and they are actively working on an unlock n r very close.
Development is not everything !
NEVER buy a phone for what it 'might' do in the future. Buy it for what it can do now.
If custom roms are important to you, don't get this phone right now. Get an S3 or One X.
If a really good oem experience is OK for you, and root is good enough, then look no further! I think this is an awesome phone.
But until proven otherwise, assume that the bootloader will never be unlocked. It might be, but if that is critical to you, then you should be buying a phone that can do that today.
Each to their own.

And expandable storage

This phone is an animal. And even now, the test units for the N4 have been updated with the build that will be on the shipped units and in benchmarks and real world testing it doesn't hold a candle to this phone. That of course poses a couple of questions like why is vanilla android not as fast or faster than the build on the optimus g if the hardware is so similar? And why buy the n4 for faster access to updates if those updates don't bring it up to the same performance level as the Optimus G?
Wireless charging is the only feature I wish we had and hey, I can live without that. So IMO this phone is superior and will be even more so if/when the developers here work there magic and get passes the locked bootloader. So I would suggest sticking around.

While I agree that LTE and expandable storage are important, if lack of sufficient progress towards boot loader unlock, in 5 days, would drive you to return the device, for one that will get customer ROMs, getting an S3 which from what I read is about to lose it's dev support due to Samsung policies (devs are tired of doing inefficient, cumbersome work arounds that shouldn't be necessary) isn't a good option, even if you got LTE everywhere you went and could expand storage to 2 TB. The One x has it's drawbacks too.
Even stock unrooted, this thing is a monster in terms of what I'm seeing it do. I may still trade it in for the One X+ at the end of this week, but if I don't I certainly can't find fault with it yet. If I can survive a Droid Bionic with utter lack of Dev support (for good reasons, obviously), the LG OG will be a snap!

I'm thinking about return the OG also, and possibly getting the One X+ (if it's battery life is decent) or the Nexus 4 (and giving up LTE, not sure though).

Also even a stock upgrade to jellybean will give us a large performance boost... I am happy enough with root for now, there is no phone that compares to this one.
Imo with just 8/16 gb storage options , no matter what power it houses n4 is pretty useless ! A couple of hd games and few songs Will fill it up and then how am i supposed to take advantage of those a15 quads !
Yeah, 64gb sd cards win

I really wish the HTC One X+ had 2GB of RAM, mainly because of the uncertainty of needing 2GB for the next version of Android OS.
Mine may be going back and I just got it today. Mine doesn't want to recognize the SIM

The other thing you aren't understanding is the Tegra 3 only supports single channel memory, so that one gig is much slower than our 2gb of dual channel memory.
I think he should send it back. Some else would appreciate this wondrous phone.

I've been looking in to buying myself a tablet, but I want one that's fast and smooth running. Ipad is great because of how smooth it runs and transisittions between pages, but I want something that my S4 can interact with. Any suggestions? I'd like to root and flash ROMs on whatever tablet I end up with so obviously ipad and surface are out. I don't know much about any of the others out there so any help would be fantastic!

One of the new Nexus 7's possibly? It's pretty much universally agreed that it's the best if not one of the best Android tablets on the market right now. Also, it's super easy to unlock the bootloader since it's a Nexus device and the development community around it is huge.

Agreed, I had the first generation Nexus 7 and absolutly loved it! Im hoping to get the 2nd gen somewhat soon. And they are very cheap compared to iJunk tablets
I thought the Nexus devices were phones.... Am I just that dumb? Lol... Can these tablets be purchased at a best buy or only online?

There are actually 2 Nexus tablets on the market right now... the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10. The 2013 Nexus 7 is an excellent tablet you can buy directly from the Play Store or other places online. The Nexus 10 is also worth considering if you want a bigger tablet, and it also has the BEST speakers of any tablet on the market. Personally, I'm waiting for them to come out with the "updated" Nexus 10 like they did with the Nexus 7. Either way, as far as Android tablets go, they are both winners. The only other tablet I would recommend taking a look at is the new Samsung Note 10.1 - it has a gorgeous display and all of the productivity power of the Note software and stylus. It's just a little too pricey in my book though.

As far as performance goes, what would you guys suggest? I don't want something that seems laggy or gets bogged down by putting too much stuff on it.

I would get the Nexus 7 2013 model. Can't go wrong with that one especially for the price!

Go on youtube and watch pocketnow's videos on tablets. They have the best reviews/comparisons and will help you figure this out fast.
Can't go wrong with a nexus 7 2013. I own one and it really is butter smooth and definitely worth the money. It's also my first tablet. Great investment!

Yeah I think a bunch of these devices had wifi issues. Pop on over to the Nexus 7 (2013) forum on XDA for details. The 7's are great and inexpensive but ASUS isn't exactly known for their QC. Good luck!

If you read the OP he wanted a tablet that would work well with his S4 and wanted some suggestions. I don't see any problem with that being posted here.
Reading thoroughly helps... My bad
