[DISCUSSION] Android 5.0 Lollipop for LG L9 Devices - LG Optimus L9 P760, P765, P768, P769

With the release of Android 5.0 Lollipop SDK CyanogenMod should have this version built very soon I would think if they haven't already.
Question is, will we LG L9 owners see a port of this to our devices anytime soon?
Understandably our numbers are dwindling due to people switching devices for whatever reason, but I would think there are still plenty of us left that still have this device and like myself use it a lot. I would love to see 5.0 Lollipop Cyanogenmod on the L9s.

Same here. If I can get this thing unlocked, and able to run 5.0, I'll probably keep using this phone till it breaks.
It was such a good deal, $200 in 2012, for really good hardware, specs suit my needs perfectly. Too bad LG decided to load their crapwarez on it.
I hear that it is indeed possible though.

Yeah, I would also like to try it...

I'd like to see
One thing i'd Love if they created a 2nd-init port specifically for the p769 instead, because let's face it. the Majority of us here cannot unlock, so a 2nd-init is our only hope.:silly:
There's a version of cm9 that DOES run on locked bootloaders (2nd-init), BUT it's designed for the p760, so the Camera, and screen orientations are reversed and it seems no one wants to maintain the project, and improve p769 compatibility. Shame because it was actually snappy to use too.:crying:

are any devs still active and able to port a 2nd int ROM?
i'd certainly try myself but i have next to zero knowledge of these things.

I have a Tmobile LG Optimus l9 P769, And i will take over the CyanogenaMod 9 for 2nd init on our p769s because i am a hardcore dev

This would be awesome. I'd be surely be donating big for the Android L rom + Disable SD Emulation!
Almost purchased new phones until I found out there are real devs working on this phone! I thought no one would care about this phone!

Some merges have started https://github.com/artas182x/android_lge_u2_common/commits/aosp-5.0
Also some fixes to CM code: http://review.cyanogenmod.org/#/c/76400/

Please. I would rather use a clean ICS over lge proprietary crap. If you do, Please go ahead and start a new thread so those of us who will use it can post bugs and stuff.

*Waits patiently*
No but really this needs to get done already I can't wait! It's going to be so awesome having 5.0 Lollipop on P769 woot!

If there's no more Dalvik cache, L probably won't be that good on the L9. Consider a 2-3 times bigger cache. Can you afford that? My free mem on Data partition would then be around zero, with things getting worse with time.
App2SD may help, also Artas' CM11 seems to count some symbolic links multiple times, I don't know which ones, in my case around 300mbytes on Data partition. Android will most certainly be unaware of that, when the space is "officially" used up, it uses coarser methods than "Storage Analyzer", which needs minutes to scan the partition thoroughly.

I'm running CM11 KitKat 4.4.4 by dihiru for Unlocked Bootloaders, there is no emulated storage, it is just 2.0GB of space only for Applications. I also have a 32GB SanDisk Micro SDHC card for all of my personal data. Music, Movies, etc.. 2.0GB of dedicated application space is more than enough for me. I have all of my applications, game emulators and everything else installed and there is still around 800mb left. I riced this ROM to.be very minimalist and it's actually faster and more responsive than my friend's Galaxy Note 3 Stock ROM.
Emulated Storage is **** bro. KANG CM11 Image is the best for this device. And when 5.0 Lollipop is ported to this device by CM you can bet the devs here are going to greatly harden it and make it more and more awesome over time.
Also, MFW we're all getting CyanogenMod Lollipop on our L9s lmao it's me eyeballing that lollipop.
EDIT: here is a link to AOSP 5.0 Lollipop ROM for L9 P760, P765 and P768. Nothing for the P769 yet.

Waiting for Lollipop For My lg L9 P765.

Multiply the Dalvik Cache size by three, subtract Dalik size, subtract the result from your free internal mem and see what is left. Maybe a negative value. But if L will still support Dalvik, all is well.
Also on a device like the L9(tested Art on my 1,2ghz dualcore tablet with 8gb internal flash) compiling Art binaries takes at least ten times longer, but fortunately only once.

Can someone explain the N4 conversion?

So, I understand the process of it.. but not really as to why.
Are you able to install anything N4 you want? Roms, kernels, etc? Or is it just the N4 converted roms from the dev section?
Is everything working? I've read mixed reports.
Thanks,
Nicholas

The lgog and the nexus 4 are fairly similar phones. The reason we can't run nexus 4 ROMs is because some differences in the partitioning. Flashing the modified tot for the conversion converts your partition layout to that of a nexus 4 and installs the stock nexus 4 rom with an unlocked bootloader. You are supposed to be able to use nexus 4 ROMs and kernels. I've flashed like a 3 different nexus 4 ROMs
The problems that you might run into are with lte but that is fixable.
There is a fix for capacitive keys , nfc , and the external SD card which I were originally not working. The fix is a ROM so if you want all those things working you have to use it or properly patch another ROM with some of its files. There is also a flash able zip that but it is only compatible with certain ROMs.
The only "issue" in not having the full internal SD storage. You only have 8gb in comparison to 16gb but having large external SD should help storage wise.
However, apparently the conversion breaks the camera for the jelly bean stock port from the lg e973http://forum.xda-developers.com/sho...an LG-E973/1/5/0 CANADA / ATT / INTERNATIONAL. Camera works fine on every other stock based ROM when you convert back but apparently not on the jellybean port. It has not been proved but it has many claims supporting it. My camera does not work and I have converted.

I got that error once. lgpnst doesn't really wipe partitions correctly before flashing ROMs. NownI wipe all of my partitions in recovery and then fastboot -w in command prompt before flashing back to stock . A data and cache is probably all that's needed but the flashing process takes a minute and I haven't had time to try it out. I think there is also something you can do at the encryption screen . it says like reset phone or something I think I've read that if you keep hitting it it will reset your phone or something idk sorry.

I tend to go back and forth doing the N4 conversion and back to At&t stock. I get this fail to encryption screen, some times after I LGNPST back to stock. Pressing the "reset phone" repeatedly never does anything for me. What i've been doing is when this happens is, I'll shut the phone down and press the Vol down and HOLD first and then hold the power button. It will bring you to some kind of factory recovery where it says "HARD RESET MODE" Just press the power button to confirm the reset and it essentially just wipes the phone and brings it back to stock.
Hope that helps!

Thanks so much man!
Are there going to be any AOSP roms coming out native for the LGOG soon? If so, I'll hold off on the conversion. But if not, then I think I'll go ahead and do the conversion and flash Ginsex or one of the other JB ports. Are the cameras working on this if you flash the fix?

I know some people are against the conversion as such, but I think in the long run, this will be the only benefit of this phone - I'm expecting LG to do its thing where they don't provide any updates once their newer phones come out.
And here comes the nexus4 conversion - we'll be able to advance our phones thanks to the actual updates for nexus4 that google and the community will provide. Probably we'll lose LTE at some point when the modems will no longer be compatible with newer android versions.
My previous phone, the captivate was in a similar scenario - slightly different from the international galaxy s, but the devs worked out a set of patches to be applied against the galaxy s roms to make them work on the captivate and the captivate has long lived since, becoming one of first phones to get cm10.1 nightlies and enjoying more than a few 4.2.1 roms. It's definitely slowing down, it's been more than 2 and half years since the phone launched and people have moved on to newer devices.
So if it wasn't for the nexus4 conversion, I wouldn't have jumped on the lgog for my upgrade - the phone shipped with ICS, might get a 4.1 update eventually, but I don't expect LG to follow up with further stock updates after 4.1.
I know there is speak of AOSP roms coming to the LGOG, and I'm really thankful for the all the devs who work bringing these, and hoping we'll even see official cm10.1/cm11 then probably we won't need the conversion at all, but if it doesn't happen, or devs give up on the lgog the conversion will be the only path to newest android.
I still dont understand why any dev is working on anything other than perfecting the n4 conversion. Doing anything else seems like a huge waste of effort and time to me. A perfectly functioning n4 conversion = this phone will be in the game for years and years. Anything else just means everyone is sol when the developers for this specific phone jump ship.. that will never happen with the n4 conversion.
There is also the odd (cant put my finger on it) veil of secrecy with this phone that i never bumped into before. So much info no one knows because its just simply not shared in any way.

While I personally don't really agree with the first comment (I feel as though stock LG development has its place and there are dangers to the conversion), I definitely agree with the secrecy, on my old inspire I knew just about everything the devs were working on, what was and wasn't working, as well as which problems they were facing. With the LGOG I feel like I'm in the dark quite often.

This phone is already essentially a N4. We are working on methods of porting the nexus 4 kernel to our phone that do not require any modifications, so we will always be able to run anything the n4 can run anyway. Basically, there will be a longer wait because this is harder to do, but it will be better in the long run, as we fully understand what is going on.
Accept that the problem still stands with a ported kernel doesnt it? You guys leave and we need a new kernel and are s.o.l. . Also please dont take what im saying as any kind of insult, its not. Just looking to understand better.
Though i guess the same could be said for a perfected conversion is something in that needed changing.

Of course both would need kernel changes to make everything work 100%. Either way, someone would need to fix things. Fixing the kernel to boot with full stock may take more work, but I would consider something that does not require modifying the non "normal" partitions of the phone to make work better than something that modifies the base bootloader of the phone.

HA! thank you! i HATE this stupid secrecy thing that alot of people in this community have. i have also never experienced anything like it. it really keeps things from expanding. people in here know that they run the risk of damaging their phone anytime they flash anything. the reason these people are keeping things secret is because they think that "dumb people will brick their phone". i have personally been running a solution to running n4 roms/aosp stuff without having to do any conversion for multiple weeks without any harm to my phone. i have a completely working cm-10.1 rom with full internal (16gb), full access to external, cap buttons, led lights, LTE, etc. everything works but i was told by members of team codefire that if i release it then i am an effing moron.

I'd like to just chime in and say 1) one person said you'd be an effin moron and he is far from the whole of team codefire. His words and actions don't represent the team as a whole, and his words were uncalled for. He could have said things in a nicer way. 2) The cm-10.1 you have relies on a testing version of freegee that was developed, but since abadonded. The reason it was abadonded was quickly we discovered that it bricked sprint radios. We had 4 people, including myself, loose radio. Thus this new freegee method was dropped.
We are instead working with 3.4 lge kernel source. I've also narrowed down what I believe the issue is on mako kernel not booting stock, to be the lge power management vs caf/mako power management. We'd probably have lge 3.4 working by now, but all of us, sk8 included jumped on using mako kernel once it was discovered about this slightly different freegee method. However like I said, after we bricked 4 radios on sprint, we didn't expand the testing any further and stopped.

[Q] Thinking about buying: Questions about this device

Well I'm reading up on different phones and I was almost sold on the LG Nexus 4 until I read further into the no LTE issue and then it clicked that while it can come with 16 gigs of memory, it's internal and therefore if the phone dies violently...or just gets lost, I lost a lot of important pics should i not back up to my comp enough. Which I don't honestly.
So I'm reading up on this phone and it has everything I need except one hitch, it doesn't come stock with Jellybean. LGs site says it come with 4.0 ICS. So I'm wondering if it does get the OS update and if so to what version. That will honestly be the deal breaker on whether I commit to buying this device in the near future.
I know i could just read through this whole forum..but really I just want a simple answer with my making my head explode with all the extra info..cause my ADD hide will sit here and read everything out of boredom. And I'm just not in the mood tonight. Please and thank you!

Well, while there's not an "official" JB update yet, there are a few unofficial ones that are working quite well, as well as CM/AOSP in the making. You can also just convert it to a nexus (basically) if you'd like, so I'd say go for it personally. However I'll probably get flamed for even answering you because you should really search since there are probably about a million threads just like this. Just food for thought...
NEVER buy a phone for what it MIGHT do in the future...
The Optimus G will probably get JB in the future - but there is a slight chance it won't. And who knows when, could be months.
If you don't mind rooting and tinkering, there are a few ports that mostly (but not completely or perfectly) run JB now.
If that works for you, then there you go.
Sent from my LG-E970 using Tapatalk 2
If you need or really want JB, and don't feel like rooting, wait a few months for the next crop of super phones. By the time this gets official JB support, the next batch will already be here with faster processors, etc. However, if you do like to mod and root and tinker, as was mentioned, there are some developers working on AOSP and CM10.1. Hopefully that will be out by the end of this month, but we don't ask for or get ETA's around here...etiquette, and stuff.
Once that door opens, I would imagine the ROM's and custom development will take-off.

I guess I should have worded my question differently. I should have said, has it gotten the update, rather than does it get it. But from the way it sounds, it has not. I like rooting and tinkering. But I really just want a stock JB phone to work with and tinker from there. I appreciate the answers though. Thanks.
Snow released a fully functional JB port based on stock for a different LGOG (not sure which one) which works phenomenally. Though I'm more for ICS instead of JB, I'm giving it a shot. The performance is outrageous.

Where is that at?
Do all features that are at least in the OEM firmware work properly?
(I have to have a phone that works, out of beta, without bugs and crashes and spending days on workarounds. I tried AOSP on my Samsung Galacxy SII Skyrocket and it was nothing but problems. Camera crashing, editing configs.... it was a beta at best and unreliable. I don't think I want a custom ROM ever again if that is the experience with it, but I do love JB)

Everything's working fine on my end too. The only other problem i've heard is of some people not having their 32g or 64g external card show up while others have. I just flashed it last night, granted it's still early to know for sure without testing a few more days but I'm really enjoying it and things are flawless right now.

My Thoughts on the LG OPTIMUS G

Getting Real sick & tired of the Optimus G, thinking seriously about selling it & getting an LG G3 or an HTC ONE M8, ever since KK ROMS came to the picture, kernel development & ROM development have been slow, now i'm facing issues with screen, when swiping in the drawer it freezes on every single swipe i make, no mods no additional kernels the lag & battery drainage it's just.... terrible, used of recommended GAPPS, LG is so stubborn not releasing the stock e970 ROM, by the time we get the update, Nexus or other devices would have something even greater than "android L" like always devices get left behind, don't know why google said no device will ever get left behind ever again... oh yeah sure!! say that to the mayor stubborn carriers that take so long to push the OTA'S like always AT&T -.-
Yeah, well... just expresing how i feel about the device now lol sick of the 4.4.4 ROMS JB was the best that work on my device & had stellar performance & battery. now it's just crap. Switching to 4.4.2 stock port. only good KK ROM for the E970.

Sounds like you might have a lemon/broken phone. If you hate it, yes, ditch it. But many people (me included) are quite happy with the OG. I've tried a bunch of ROMs, and most were mostly okay, but I've been running CM milestones and nightlies for several months now with little trouble. In fact, performance has been good, by my standards, and the battery still lasts all day with moderate use. I've only had the thing for about 9 months but I'm usually at least thinking about upgrading or what to get next by this point - not so with the OG.
I'll probably start looking at other phones when I get super bored some day next winter, maybe a used G3 or some HTC, who knows. As for the development, I haven't been reading much here lately because I haven't had problems or time and energy to tinker. But I've been very happy with the help here and have found the OG devs to be eminently qualified. (I have never posted here much but I've been reading the site for years, through about 6 different devices. All my questions had usually already been answered before I could ask them, and I am not a developer.)
Sorry the E970 hasn't worked out as well for you as for some. Good luck with whatever you decide on.

went to 4.3 the issue for me is KK they don't work for me, only KK ROM that work is gorabus excellent dev one thing i forgot to mention, it's not that i'm hating on the development on this thred it's just that i feel limited & hate limitations, have you've seen the Nexus community? most of the known devs that were making ROMS for this device jumped out. i just miss the good old days :/ might keep the phone for an emergency phone or something phone works it's just KK issue, ever since [4.4.2-4.4.4]. but i'm definitely getting a newer device.

I feel the same. I had Nexus 4 but sold it to buy a Nexus 5, dropped the Nexus 5 on my motorcycle... switch back to the Optimus G after replacing the screen twice (both times my fault). But my OptimusG keeps kicking. The CM11 20140802 build has been good to me, everything from M6 - to a recent nightly on CM11 was flaky for me (UI issues). Thanks to the folks @ CM this includes the fixed encryption fstab so I can feel secure again without having to hack up a ROM manually.
You can't really expect LG to update a 2 year-old phone. There is almost no incentive for them to do so when most people don't care. I'm waiting for the next Google nexus phone. Buying anything other then a Nexus product or something like the Galaxy S5 will put you down the same path again.
The stock KK port is decently usable.. I'm switching to it as well
This has become pretty much a legacy device but still better than most older phones.

I am using this Rom
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2771440
[ROM][E970/E971/E973]LG Official Kitkat 4.4.2[stock].
Stock KK for the LG and it has been great. From eco mode to notification light to battery and qslide apps everything works and battery has been pretty well. So yeah CM11 KK or CM Kitkat roms in general for the lg g aren't very stable in my experience and have not really good battery life. But this stock kitkat Rom is much better and really doesn't give me a huge reason to switch to an different phone despite having a OnePlusOne and a Xperia Z2. I would say the LG G still holds up very well against all of them.
Sent from my LG-F180K aka LG e970 using XDA mobile app
I have to agree. I have also been using the stock kitkat port, this rom here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2771440
And it's been fantastic for me overall.
Didn't use many custom roms as it hasn't been a long time since I got this phone.
I rooted it on ics and installed this kitkat rom. Then I tried Slick JB rom but i ended up coming back to this rom again due to the smoothness and stability. Haven't had one crash.
Well yes if this phone did receive an official KitKat update, it would still be a beast. But you can't really blame a device for underperforming based on the ROM development, those are people who volunteered their time to put ROMS on this device especially since the LGOG is almost approaching an age of 2 years.
I've been using CM 11 and it has worked great, vanilla android is the way to go its simple and fast. But I understand that many users (including myself) love the theming aspect of a phone that makes it look like its officially from the brand (ex. TouchWiz or Sense). LG has its unique theme on their successors such as the G2 or G3 and it would great on a KK update to the LGOG.
But its really up to the user on what phone they really want. The LGOG is still fast but if you upgrade now all you'll be really getting is a faster, bigger, and better camera. But still the OG is pretty beast
Yeah I like my LGOG but it's time for me anyways to move on up the ladder. I did my Samsung stint but I like the underdog LG. So I'm getting a G2. Actually got 2 of them I'm repairing. I like the themes CM has to offer but LG's stock interface is really cool. Just my 2 cents.

[Q] Custom Recovery LG VS450PP

Hello there to all who have stumbled on to this thread. I know that not many know how to build a custom recovery and many who do are busy. If you could I will at the very least try to reward you somehow. If you need the recovery image since yours is messed up feel free to download. If any other files are needed please ask and I will supply them as soon as possible. Thank you and good luck.

Replace (227) with standard www dot
custom recovery would be great
There are many people like myself looking for a custom recovery for the LG vs450pp. These are pretty decent phones and i would like to see a few roms made for it... perhaps a custom viper rom & a kernel retaining the knock-on feature. Paid someone a pack of smokes for this phone and im content with it so far as a stock rooted phone goes but further development would be greatly appreciated.

Get the recovery from post #33 in this thread. Start with the first post and read until you get there. Personally tested on both the LS620 and the VS450PP...
A friend is working on a custom ROM, and I hope to test this later tonight or tomorrow. Fingers crossed

I believe stock and debloated stock only so far. Custom recovery has been modified to work from key presses upon boot, but I haven't succeeded on this particular device yet. Look for the LS620 root thread over there.

Thanks I will check out the LS620 root thread.
The debloated stock rom, does everything still function on the phone with that rom and do you have the link to it so I can give it a try or is it in the LS620 thread?
Thx.

Here's the thread, but please note it is for the Realm (LS620) which is a Boost Mobile (Sprint) device. I've only verified the recovery working on my Exceed 2, but still without access to it via cold booting (button presses). The thread starter (bcrichster) is working with SuperR on modding the boot.img for the VS450PP that I supplied them with.
Once past that hurdle, I'll try the debloated Realm ROM on an Exceed 2. I "had" both devices, but soft bricked my Realm and cannot find the .kdz for this anywhere. Before loss of the Realm, I compared the /system of both and they are nearly identical (other than partition "numbers" as I recall, and several carrier specific apps that aren't needed anyway). At least if I have issues, I'll be able to restore my stock nandroid.
In a nutshell, proceed with caution as this is 'technically' for the Realm and a WIP at that. I'll be back with updated info as things progress. I'm just assisting and testing at this point. I'm about to root a new one later tonight and provide them with some (nearly) virgin images to work with.
Just got a PM that the modded boot.img for the VS450PP may be ready for me to test as early as tonight. If the Exceed 2 is your daily driver, you may want to wait just a bit longer...

Thank you for the follow up!
I also found that this phone is also just like the LG - L70? here
So it looks like a good chance we will see some ROM soon then?!
I picked up this phone from BB for $15 on sale over the holiday weekend and I had $10 in BB rewards I had to use up before they expired so for $5 plus tax I thought it would be a fun toy to play with and see how it works with my moto 360. And so far I am happy with it. I mounted a 32GB card in it and moved the apps it would let me move to it.
So far the only issue I have with the phone is Bluetooth music payback to my BT speaker. Seems to break up from time to time. Not sure what that is about...
Anyway sounds like you are close to something so I can wait a bit longer before digging into to guts of this device and will just keep testing it out.
I will keep an eye out for updates and let me know if there is anything I can help with... I do have a some virgin phone with only root access now on it and have dropbox access.
Any updates on this? I just got the LG Optimus Exceed 2 phone (lg-vs450pp) for a good price on amazon ($15)! And if I can get something close to stock android on this it would make a wonderful DEV device.
I was able to root it and put twrp on it as per this thread's instructions.
Looking forward to updates!

I just received 2 more from Amazon today (how can you NOT grab these @ $15?), for a grand total of 8 now (actually 7, as my grandson just flipped an untouched one for $40 last night <g>). Working long hours every day thru the end of the year, and spent a bunch of my time recovering, then assisting on the Realm.
No promises, but I intend to do an extreme debloat the Exceed 2, and at least (help) make a nicer stock ROM, with init.d support. Just too little time at this point
As an aside, there is a better recovery available (2.8.6) you may want to look at. Should I succeed in any ROM tweaks, I'll be using this. Unsure if it will actually matter, as I'm not really a "developer" per se'. The latest TWRP I mention gets the file dates right, and that alone (to me) makes it worth installing. I believe he fixed the screen timeout issue on this release too, but haven't verified it yet myself.
I'm playing with 3 different devices at once, and my "old-timers" is adding to my lack of time. Had to unbrick a Moto G last night, and it consumed some 'precious' time. Arrggghh, too many irons in the fire. And I gotta go bowling in a few minutes. FML...

LG G3 great phone poor updates

The LG G3 is a wonderful phone but when it comes to updates I give it a grade of D-. It took months for the sync problem with WiFi to be fixed. Updates to 5 is behind schedule. Verizon blames LG for the problem.
As a consumer, I do not care who is to blame, I need a solution!
My next phone will be a Nexus phone. If Verizon cannot get me a clean version of the Nexus I dump Verizon and try Google Fi.
What's your feeling on the subject?

If you have grandfathered unlimited, I wouldn't dump that for a virgin carrier.
I have VZW unlimited, and just bought a G3 to replace my shattered Galaxy S4.
Was this a mistake to jump into the G3? I had root, open, generic wifi tether, and a pretty good overall situation with the SGS4, but wanted slightly more modern HW, better resolution and 3GB RAM.
If I go to CM 12.1, will that resolve some of OPs complaints?

Well, since you asked:
The updates to the G3 (including to v5.0) are underwhelming.
As a software developer for over 40 years, I'd like to see more testing before release, not less. Or would we like to be in the shoes of Apple users, who can't boot after an update?
Yes, I look forward to updates, but mostly out of curiosity.
Updates almost never include what I'd like to see added (or removed).
I don't worship my computing devices. I'm interested in what they can do, not the latest UI look (not that it's what you are looking for, but many are).

i also have verizon unlimited, I have been on skydragon 5.0/4.2 kernel for a while now. The wifi has been fixed, I love the phone, the camera is not an iphone camera (sadly, I think they win hands down on the camera), but it is still a great camera. I would recommend you install the hotspot mod from xdabbeb and look into the xcam lg 6.24 app (camera app, for stock roms though, personally, I like it over stock on the lg). I've never used cm, I sort of like stock roms (was on jasmine a long time before skydragon), but I think that you'll like the phone, I also have xposed installed. I haven't had ram issues at all, but I am not a gamer so not sure what your needs are. The 24b modem has been great for me once it was updated. On updates, yes, it has been slow coming from verizon (or lg), but mostly that is a stagefright type fix, and since lgg4 has launched, I just don't think that we are high priority on getting out those updates. I have hear "rumors" that our next update will not be until marsmallow, but they are just that...rumors. Hope you like the g3, personally, I love it.
Thanks, tmord1, that's very helpful information.
All I really want is a nice platform with minimal bloat, high performance and reliability, and the ability to wireless tether on LTE. I am an infrastructure systems and network administrator, so my concerns are along those lines: what makes a device fast, robust and capable, and if possible bypassing the cages that the vendors mandate.
I get my device delivered tomorrow, so I will look into the methods for root and TWRP install. I have unlocked and rooted many devices, going back to the Galaxy Nexus 1 and original Galaxy Tab. So, Odin and ADB don't' bother me.
:good:
If the camera is important to you, updating / patching to CM 12.1 will affect the camera. Apparently, LG camera driver is proprietary (for the laser focus, etc) and not available on ASOP roms.
I loved CM 12.1 on the G3, but I was unhappy with third party camera apps. I had to go back to stock for the camera.
It's a good phone, though.

The latest update 35b and especially the roms based on it like Jasmine 9.1 really improved the phone. I don't feel any need to upgrade devices and feel like the software is much improved even over the kitkat stock rom that I thought was a great start. Lollipop before 5.1.1 was problematic itself and you can blame Google for that.
Agreed 100% the 35 b update made a world of difference as far as speed. The phone is much faster than its ever been on any ROM imho. Btw, has any other carrier updated to 5.1.1?
I switched to liquidsmooth for a more up to date system.
Didn't know that about the camera, that explains why it's taking longer to focus now than when I was on JasmineRom.
Still a great phone.

If you haven't tried JasmineROM 9.1 or SkyDragon 6.x, you might want to give them a try. Both based on the new 5.1.1 stock and it runs really well!

We are talking the LG G3, not nexus phones and google fi, at least I am.
LG is still ahead of Motorola and HTC and only slightly below Samsung who is the fastest updating carrier after the nexus devices for having timely updates. I'm grateful I bought this phone after having the S3, as Samsung isn't messing around with allowing any more unlocked devices. Even the new nexus devices have efuses to check for phone modification to affect warranty and pay apps that are not reversible. Also you won't be getting a removable battery and sd card with another manufacturer on a new phone. The LG G3 is a pretty darn good device still to own in my book.

just a heads up, google fi has nothing to do with nexus phones or updates, other than the fi carrier service can only be used on a nexus at this time, and possibly will never be expanded to non google devices.
I think software updates are a problem for any carrier android devices. Most have to wait a month to a couple for a update that an international device gets. This is so annoying. But something that's even more annoying is how most carrier devices come with bootloaders that cannot be unlocked or so locked up it takes month to find a way to bypass them. I had Galax s4 and I bought it once I knew TWRP could be installed. Then when the g3 was released I wanted it but waited until developers got TWRP working then bought my g3. I'm probably gonna keep my G3 until Cyanogenmod stops supporting it or it dies. What ever comes 1st.
